Progress
2008-01-11 04:33:00
The draft version of my dissertation analyzes the responses to my blogger survey. In many ways, the results are quite similar to those of the Pew Internet & American Life Project’s study of bloggers in 2006. My dissertation’s case studies of state-focused political blogs around the country indicate that many of the same ...

Work on my dissertation continues. Using the survey data I collected online, I have identified multiple examples of state-focused blogs exerting influence on politics in individual states. I have also found that individuals who maintain these blogs are more engaged politically and are more likely believe that every vote makes a difference. ...

Going broke?
2007-05-02 06:57:00
A new variable has been introduced into the Louisiana political environment just as the legislative session gets underway: After looking at publicly-available Road Home numbers, Cogressman Bobby Jindal sent a letter to Governor Blanco raising questions about whether the Road Home Program will actually have the revenues necessary to provide grants to all qualified recipients. The math ...

This explains everything
2007-04-24 16:16:00
There’s a report this morning that Governor Blanco is requesting the addition of more than 1000 new state jobs to be spread out among state offices. The administration suggests recovery efforts are driving the need for more jobs, despite no presentation of evidence to support that assertion. All but forgotten are the governor’s post-hurricane promises ...

Stuck on backward

Poor John Breaux. Chased out of the Louisiana governor’s race by a florist. Well, that’s the spin readers are asked to digest in John Hill’s opinion piece today. The column notes the state Republican party responded aggressively to talk that Breaux might enter the race in the first place. The result, Hill writes, ...

Really saving Louisiana
2007-04-20 02:35:00
Louisiana?s political environment has yet to recover from the oxygen deprivation it suffered while Breaux sucked all the air out of the room. Weeks of breathless anticipation preceding Breaux?s announcement that he will not run for governor successfully masked the importance of what?s really at stake for Louisiana this election year. And what?s at stake ...

Actions have consequences
2007-04-15 16:51:00
John Hill’s Sunday column begins with 3 sentences: Sentence 1: “Former Gov. Edwin Edwards has done enough time in prison.” Sentence 2: “At 80, EWE is no threat to society.” Sentence 3: “He’s done 52 months in prison, is a model prisoner and has health problems.” Actually, I think it’s a great idea to let EWE out of prison. ...

Political theater of the absurd
2007-04-13 19:10:00
After much ado and multiple delays, LA’s attorney general, Charles Foti, has punted. It’s an unsurprising end to what’s been a non-issue from the start. Can’t blame AG Foti for trying to straddle the issue. He was in a no-win situation no matter what opinion he issued. But the only way to preserve any possibility ...
