Rhrodri Morgan to step down as First Minister
2007-08-03 14:40:00 I read in the Tribune (3rd Aug 2007) that Rhrodri is planning to step down as soon as early next year. Tony Heath writes "with the historic Labour/Plaid Cymru coalition in place and in power in the Welsh Assembly, Rhrodri Morgan has told friends he is to step down as First Minister and Labour Leader - possibly as early as next year. Mr Morgan who is 68 next month, said before the elections in May that he would probably stand down in 2009. But his recent health scare - he had keyhole surgery ...... - has made him think of bringing that date forward."He speculates about the successor citing Carwyn Jones as the favourite. I think Jane Davidson is likely to be a favourite. I can't find any odds on line yet!His wife Julie Morgan MP has, I believe, been reselected as the candidate for Cardiff North for New Labour at the next election which could as soon as early next year. Either she doesn't plan to spend much time with Rhrodri or she doesn't expect to win!OK gwe More About: Step , Organ

Fuel poverty Government fails targets
2007-07-22 11:44:00 Fuel Poverty A coalition of energy companies, including EDF Energy, E.ON UK and Scottish Power, have threatened to take the Government to court if, as appears likely, it misses its fuel poverty targets. In 2000, the Government made the legally binding commitment to completely eradicate fuel poverty among the vulnerable – the elderly, disabled and families on low incomes – by 2010. Households are defined as fuel poor if they spend more than 10 per cent of their disposable income, excluding housing benefits, on utility bills. But the number of fuel-poor households in the UK actually doubled between 2004 and 2006 from 1.2 million to 2.5 million as bills soared. The Government has been criticised for not providing enough funds to its Warm Front subsidy scheme tasked with tackling fuel poverty. The Treasury has earmarked £800m over the last three years to provide free insulation and heaters. But officials are working on the next Com! prehensive Spending Review (CSR), which will fix g... Where are the women Harriet Harmen??
2007-06-29 10:16:00 What influence has Harriet got with Gordon? Did Gordon consult with Harriet before deciding on his cabinet? Has he listened to the party? Obviously not, listening is not a verb in the new labour dictionary. Lets have more women in the cabinet but 'real' women please. Balls for children - won't work...empathy required .. preferably experience of children ....obviously an equal opportunity appointment. Just get to know the right people and you will be OK. Men can be so god with childrens issues and womens issues as long as that involves a top job and pay and prestige. Bye bye Blair, oh no, here comes Brown
2007-06-27 11:19:00 Bye bye Blair - I recall working my socks off with other labour party members to get rid of the Tories. We looked forward to building council houses - the money to repair them - fighting poverty, raising pensions. All these people I campaigned with have left the Labour party in despair. When I look back I feel betrayed, rejected, heartbroken as if by a dearly loved partner. Then that changed to anger.I always found Tony repulsive, smarmy - in spite of jokes about him being the first Labour leader you could go to bed with the lights on! Perhaps the guys liked him? I remember him speaking at conference before it turned into a show but I left the room. How could those old labour or original labour people left in the party tolerate this smarmy, arrogant bloke? Why have MPs continued to support him when he has lied and lied and betrayed them - effectively kicking them in the teeth? Perhaps they should take advice from domestic abuse campaigns, fight denial, have zero tolerance for being ... More About: Brown , Oh No , Lair

Lord Blair of Kut al-Amara was going to create "Palestine
2007-06-25 18:37:00 Robert Fisk: How can Lord Blair possibly be given this peace[Published: Monday 25, June 2007 - 10:27]I suppose that astonishment is not the word for it. Stupefaction comes to mind. I simply could not believe my ears in Beirut when a phone call told me Lord Blair of Kut al-Amara was going to create "Palestine ". I checked the date - no, it was not April 1 - but I remain overwhelmed that this vain, deceitful man, this proven liar, a trumped-up lawyer who has the blood of thousands of Arab men, women and children on his hands is contemplating being "our" Middle East envoy. Can this be true?I had always assumed Balfour, Sykes and Picot were the epitome of Middle Eastern hubris. But Blair? That this (soon-to-be) ex-prime minister, this man who took his country into the sands of Iraq, should actually believe he has a role in the region - he whose own preposterous envoy, Lord Levy, made so many secret trips there, to no avail - is going to sully his hands (and, I fear, our lives) in the worl...
