Jonathan Morgan AM says we are seeing more of Cardiff North turn into concr
2007-03-11 17:20:00
Johnathan says "You are probably aware that it was a Conservative MP who introduced the Bill tackling the garden grabbing problem. I find it astonishing that the council find it so easy to allow people to build in their gardens, in many roads it sets a dangerous precedent. Sadly we are seeing much of Card iff North turned into concrete. The rules should be tighter, simple as that. "Regards, Jonathan

What do our local politicans think - Cllr Jane Cowan expresses concern...
2007-02-16 12:15:00
“I feel that there is an increasing trend for properties to split into 2 or more on the same site. I have seen sites in Rhiwbina which were a single bungalow, and can then get planning permission for two, 2-storey houses. I think that this fundamentally alters the character of an area, as well as the increased pressure on services – particularly roads " .

Cardiff council's planning committee granted permission for work to start on The Pines mansion, Heol Y Forlan, Whitchurch, Cardiff, at a meeting last night. In the face of fierce opposition to the plans to build four one-bedroom flats at the site, the committee voted by five votes to four to approve the development………….. Daphne Shepherd, of the Whitchurch Heritage Action Group, was also at the meeting hoping the plans for four flats in the mansion and seven separate houses on its grounds would be thrown out.

Preserve our city heritage

Preserve our city heritage a look back to see what others have said...I HAVE just read about Cardiff planning committee wanting to knock down Mill Cottage in Llanishen, Cardiff. What is wrong with these people? Pretty soon we will have no history left in Cardiff. They seem hell bent on knocking all the old buildings down and rebuilding with glass and chrome monstrosities. If you go into the city centre you could be in any city in Britain as they all look the same. Please leave the old buildings alone and let's have our own individual look and be proud of our city, not knock it down and rebuild with ugly buildings.Wednesday, 18 August South Wales Echo

Civic society in Yorkshire and humberside on garden grabbing
2007-02-11 15:33:00
YHACS believes that there are several negative effects of the practice of garden-grabbing that have been highlighted by its critics:(1) There is a very real strain on local infrastructure from the dramatic increase in housing density by large-scale high-density developments encroaching on otherwise lowdensity areas.Draft Version 0.2 9(2) Ecologically, garden-grabbing has a direct impact of reducing garden and green spaces in city and town centres (especially when accompanied by the concreting over of front gardens for parking spaces). As a result of such development, the delicate balance between the built and natural environments in our local areas is compromised. The end result may be a safeguarded green countryside, but it will also meanincreasingly brick and concrete cities and towns.(3) The impact of an inappropriately proportioned development scheme on the character of a neighbourhood can be detrimental to the sense of place associated with a particular locality. For example, in...

Civic Trust England campaign agaisnt the Barker Review
2007-02-11 15:25:00
The Civic Trust has joined a coalition of the UK’s leading environmental and social organisations to campaign against recommendations in the recent Barker Review of Land Planning. The group believes that recommendations will have an adverse impact of the natural and built environment and will not allow local communities to have any involvement in planning decisions. The coalition is holding a Parliamentary reception to explain their views to MPs on 7th February, and have launched a website, where the public can email Gordon Brown to express their concerns. For further information about the Barker Review and the Civic Trust's views, please see our Campa ign s page.planningdisaster.co.ukhttp://www.civ ictrustwales.org/

Six reasons against Garden Grabbing
2007-02-11 13:33:00
1. Garden s offer unique and diverse habitats As the BUGS Project (Biodiversity in Urban Gardens in Sheffield), conducted by Dr Ken Thompson and colleagues at Sheffield University, has shown, gardens provide not only very varied habitats but also may be the best breeding grounds for some species, given the minimal support for wildlife in conventional farmland. The more gardens are destroyed, the more we threaten our environmental heritage and its future. 2. Gardens offer rest and recuperation, an antidote to stress. Research has been undertaken which shows gardening is a better answer to stress than medical remedies for people suffering severe stress. But gardeners know just stepping out into a garden causes people to breathe differently and move at a different pace. Interestingly, there are more members of the All Party Parliamentary Horticulture & Gardening Group than any other Parliamentary Group and many MPs cite "enjoying getting out into my garden" as their personal antidote to ...
