DC Madam- Beyond the Headlines
2008-05-04 06:51:00
Cross posted on Newsblaze!____It all started with my original post on the exciting topic of a madam who had apparently been trotting escorts around the halls of power in Washington DC for the better part of a decade (with my corollary that the customers of this service had to be primarily Republicans, as any self-respecting Democrat would just run out and get an affair going.) My interaction with Deborah Jeane Palfrey, dubbed by the media as the DC Madam , has been a long, weird tale that had to be told eventually. If you're looking for a bio look elsewhere - like all American pseudo-celebrities, Ms. Palfrey has long since earned her Wikipedia entry. When Alan Gray over at NewsBlaze asked me for a story, the only one that came to mind was my own, so here it is. I remember the first time I saw Ms. Palfrey was on CNN; she was reading a statement quite dramatically set on the steps of a federal courthouse. Her speech moved me, as at the time, my only purpose in life as a liberal prog...

DC Madam Commits Suicide
2008-05-01 19:18:00
Shocking news on MSNBC- initial reports are saying the so called DC Madam , Deborah Jeane Palfrey, may have committed suicide after being convicted of money laundering and other charges in connection with her Washington DC based escort service. This is sad news indeed- I worked with Jeane for a while when I was still convinced of her innocence. I changed my opinion and eventually left her to her own devices, and to hear this news today truly breaks my heart. Despite her faults she was a smart and classy woman, funny and very much a distinct and vital personality. My condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed.UPDATE: More info.... Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the woman dubbed the D.C. Madam, has commited suicide. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, or D.C. Madam, has reportedly killed herself in Florida, according to police.According to Fox News, authorities are saying that Deborah Jeane Palfrey has committed suicide. Police received a call from the home Palfrey's mother Thursday to inv...

Standard Anti-Bush Fare, Kansas Edition
2008-04-30 01:04:00
Since I've been in the blogging mood lately I thought I'd toss out some of these talking points coming out of the Kansas Democratic Party in response to the local GOP's typically misleading campaigning in defense of incumbent Bush ite Pat Roberts (who seems as though he may very well have a fight on his hands this fall against Jim Slattery.)Here are some more relevant facts about this election. Before Pat Roberts and the Bush administration began ignoring issues important to Kansans eight years ago?We had a balanced budget and $250 billion in surplus available to start paying down the national debt. Today, we have a $260 billion deficit and have added $3.6 trillion to our national debt. The inflation rate was 1.6 percent. Today it?s 4.1 percent ? the highest we?ve seen in 17 years! (Bureau of Labor Statistics The Employment Situation, March 2008.)Kansans paid $1.37/gallon at the pump. That?s 250 percent cheaper than the price of gasoline today - $3.53/gallon.The median househol...

The Spurious Obama "Superdelegate" Argument
2008-04-29 02:46:00
Howard Dean articulated a point that directly refutes one the Obama campaign's core nomination arguments- namely that superdelegates are a bunch of elites plotting to overturn the will of the people, which currently is awarding the junior Senator from Illinois with a slim lead (currently 137, with 716 left to go per CNN) in pledged delegates. Via Meet the Press yesterday;MR. RUSSERT: The candidate with the most elected delegates is not guaranteed the nomination?DR. DEAN: The rules say that the candidate with the most delegates gets the nomination, and I support the rules.MR. RUSSERT: So that the superdelegates could, in effect, overrule the elected delegates?DR. DEAN: That, you know, you shouldn't think of it that way. So-called "superdelegates" are, in fact, elected by exactly the same people who vote for the elected delegates. This is just--this is like an--a representative democracy. You elect a--80 percent of the delegates, and they have to do what you ask them to do. ...
I'm Surrounded by Obama-philes!
2008-04-24 11:45:00
I am really starting to get sick of the inherent anti-Hillary bias I have seen spring up in the media and online, even from sources I had previously thought to be moderately fair and objective (if advocacy blogs can even qualify for either term, including this one!) If you don't believe me, read the afore-linked (is that even a word? If not it should be!) "articles" and tell me if they pass the journalistic Pepsi-challenge. To me they read like some weird nightmare version of Fox for liberals. It's as if the entire country, infected with the ideological politics practiced by the Bush regime for the better part of a decade, has shifted to a "new kind of politics" but kept the process intact, complete with the circular reasoning and closed minded, stubborn defense of decisions made with the emotions, as opposed to cold, hard, political reality and reason. The Left and those partial to it, or at least those driven from the Right by the fiascoes of the last two presidential terms, are...

Barack Obama is Disingenuous
2008-03-03 17:33:00
Something has been bothering me about the spectacular rise of freshmen Illinois Senator Barack Obama for a while, and I just couldn't put my finger on it. It might have something to do with the sycophantic fawning of the media, perhaps; it may also have had something to do with how so many of my friends and fellow Democrats were jumping on the bandwagon, seemingly without any critical thought.I finally figured it out when this story about Obama's position on NAFTA broke;Barack Obama's senior economic policy adviser privately told Canadian officials to view the debate in Ohio over trade as "political positioning," according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was rejected by the adviser and held up Monday as evidence of doublespeak by rival Hillary Rodham Clinton. The memo is the first documentation to emerge publicly out of the meeting between the adviser, Austan Goolsbee, and officials with the Canadian consulate in Chicago, but Goolsbee said it misinterprets what he...
Republicans Would Kill Americans for Profit
2008-02-20 07:12:00
It's an extraordinary headline, but what other conclusion can be drawn considering the GOP's current FISA talking points?Let me explain...Republicans say that if the massive data mining operatio- ahem, I mean Protect America Act expires, then Americans could be killed. The President himself started the ball rolling during his recent hissy fits over the expiration of the Protect America Act; The House's failure to pass the bipartisan Senate bill would jeopardize the security of our citizens. As Director McConnell has told me, without this law, our ability to prevent new attacks will be weakened. And it will become harder for us to uncover terrorist plots. We must not allow this to happen. It is time for Congress to ensure the flow of vital intelligence is not disrupted. It is time for Congress to pass a law that provides a long-term foundation to protect our country. And they must do so immediately.Indeed, Glenn Beck said it plainly on his show a couple of nights ago, as T...

My Rundown of the Presidential Races
2008-01-18 01:57:00
I must admit I have been flummoxed on this blog lately. I previously endorsed John Edwards as the best candidate for the Democratic nomination and ultimately the presidency, and because of that I found myself with a form of writer's block. On one hand I wanted to forcefully advocate for Edwards, and on the other I not only wanted to maintain a bit of objectivity on the blog, but also did not feel it was right for me, as a Democrat, to try and sandbag the other candidates.I decided instead to discuss how I feel about the race and avoid the news chasing and commentary that clogs the mind and, in my view, destroys any possibility of making one's mind up without floods of remembered media slogans and the prevailing meme of the moment of the vapid cable news talk shows.Indeed, although the mainstream media seems to have learned some lessons from its gullibility with the Bush administration, it still maintains the destructive habit of trying to "profitize" the news. Since profits and...

Shame On Us
2008-01-17 22:42:00
I have been on a hiatus of a kind, but this story about the United States trying to assist Cambodia in the trials of Khmer Rouge murderers perked up my ears; The United States wants an advisory role in Cambodia's Khmer Rouge tribunal and would consider helping fund the cash-strapped court if given the post, a Cambodian official said Thursday. The offer was made during talks with the US State Department's Assistant Secretary of State Scot Marciel, said Kao Kim Huorn, a secretary of state with the foreign ministry."The US requested that Cambodia create another post -- a special advisor to help the Khmer Rouge tribunal," Kao Kim Huorn said after meeting with top US officials."This is a condition if Cambodia wants the US to provide funds for the tribunal. Cambodia is considering the request," he added, saying the advisor's role was under discussion. The United States is a key Cambodian donor but has not pledged funding for the 56.3 million-dollar tribunal established to try senior Khmer...

Edwards Takes Early Iowa Lead

Tighten your sphincters, folks, the race is on, and with 118 out of 1781 counties reporting, John Edwards leads with 36.15%, Clinton is in second with 30.85%, and Obama is third with 30.01% (numbers via Iowa CaucusResults.com.)Keep your eyes open, and cross your fingers for your favorite- once again I'd like to point out that though I fervently hope for a clear Edwards win here, I'd be happy with any of the current slate of candidates, even the little guys with fractions of a percent.Stay tuned for updates...UPDATE: The lead has tightened as the bargaining begins- with 433 reporting, the top 3 are below;SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS : 33.06%SENATOR BARACK OBAMA : 32.20%SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON : 32.14%UPDATED AGAIN: Obama takes slim lead as the race is now officially a dead heat, 607 of 1781 reporting;SENATOR BARACK OBAMA : 32.98%SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS : 32.29%SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON : 31.88%UPDATED AT 2010:It just occurred to me that Blogger doesn't provide times, so I'll start that now for...

John Edwards for President
2008-01-02 22:24:00
I'm sure most of my regular readers have known I have had a bias for John Edwards in the Democratic presidential primaries for quite a while. While privately I decided who I will vote for, I have yet to formally endorse a candidate, primarily because I like to keep a modicum of objectivity on my blog. So much for that- the time has come to make my case and explain exactly why I think Edwards is the best choice for America. I'd like to take a minute and try to convince those progressives out there who are still wobbly and looking for the right candidate to attempt to clean up the mess George Bush will be leaving behind. Of all the Democratic candidates, John Edwards is the best choice to reform our broken system and bring ordinary folks back into the political process. To illustrate my point we'll take a look at the government reform pages on the websites of the top three candidates. In my opinion, the biggest problem since Bush took office (and the biggest change needed to ri...

Hello faithful readers!  My apologies for being down so long.  The numerous family dinners, icy driving, competing family functions- you've just got to love the holidays! I have been out for a "winter break" but now I'm back, rip-roaring and ready to go.  It's one more day until the Iowa caucuses, and as soon as the Democrats have chosen a leader the real race will begin in earnest.  Soon the epic battle of our lifetime, the true struggle between a progressive, people-oriented democracy and the corporate oligarchy we have endured these last 7 years will be upon us.Make no mistake- the 2008 elections will decide the future of our country for decades to come.  The next president will likely resolve the Iraq War, be heavily involved in any possible Israeli-Palestinian solution that may come along, and very possibly install at least 2 or more Supreme Court justices, to name just a few of the momentous decisions coming up.  With anti-Bush sentiment still red-hot, and GOP recruiting an...
Ron Paul Won't Return White Supremacist's Money
2007-12-20 22:42:00
The fringe groups supporting longshot GOP candidate Ron Paul don't seem to be helping his campaign much- first it was folks trying to make their own Ron Paul money, and now the campaign won't return a donation admitted white supremacist Don Black. From USA Today;Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has received a $500 campaign donation from a white supremacist, and the Texas congressman doesn't plan to return it, an aide said Wednesday.Don Black, of West Palm Beach, recently made the donation, according to campaign filings. He runs a website called Stormfront with the motto, "White Pride World Wide." The site welcomes postings to the "Stormfront White Nationalist Community."Here's the campaign's weak excuse for taking money from someone espousing racial hatred;"Dr. Paul stands for freedom, peace, prosperity and inalienable rights. If someone with small ideologies happens to contribute money to Ron, thinking he can influence Ron in any way, he's wasted his money," Paul spo...

Iraq Casualty Update
2007-12-17 16:14:00
With Iraq essentially dropping off the radar due to drastically lower coalition casualty rates, I thought it would be a good time to reiterate the continuing true human cost of what America has unleashed with Bush's illegal, immoral, supposedly-preemptive war.Iraqis are still dying in droves as the ethnic cleansing continues, albeit at a reduced rate, across the country. Here's a list compiled by iCasualties showing just the atrocities reported over just the last seven days;12/14/07BAGHDAD - Two dead bodies were found in western Baghdad, police said.202 12/14/07KIRKUK - Gunmen posing as Iraqi army soldiers killed one civilian in a drive-by shooting near the city of Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, an Iraqi military source said.101 12/13/07BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed one civilian and wounded five others including two policemen in the Waziriya district of northern Baghdad, police said.101 12/13/07BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed a contractor working with U.S. forces ...

I thought I'd take a second to use my blog to bitch about my job. Hey! It's my blog!Well, actually, non-job. Now that my corporate overlords are no longer part of the picture, I can freely say the hated company I slaved for was Sprint. Some of you old-timers may remember me complaining in the past about these assholes. Well, the other shoe finally dropped and yours truly is now officially on the dole.Sprint in Kansas City has a horrible reputation. This isn't the first time they have reorganized and laid people off. In fact, they have quite a history of such shady, heartless moves. As such, folks who work there are called the Borg, ala Star Trek, due to the listless, head-down demeanor of the average Sprint employee. Not to mention the corporate philosophy seems to mirror the Borg credo; We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance i...

Why I'm Not Voting for Hillary
2007-12-13 14:45:00
I do my best on my blog to maintain a modicum of objectivity- anyone who reads for a few minutes quickly discovers my progressive bias, but otherwise I try to be as fair as I can.I have avoided naming a horse in this race for that reason, amongst others. The ridiculous media obsession with polling and image in the Democratic primaries drives me nuts. I mean, who really cares about Senatorial cleavage and haircut prices after all? This election is so critical we cannot afford to lose it, so I'm still trying to evaluate the best candidate for the general election, regardless of their religion, grooming fees, or any other trivial detail. To be honest, I favor John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich, but as of yet I have not decided on who I'll vote for in the primaries. Mainly because my state (I live in Kansas City, but vote Missouri) has little or no effect on the overall contest. The nomination will be decided in Iowa and New Hampshire this year, so by Super Tuesday it will already b...

I just thought of a great way to remember which John McCain one is referring to in any given conversation;Pre-eyebrow (or Proto-brow)This was the reasonable, "Maverick" McCain of the 2000 election.Or Post-eyebrow (aka "Old Man McGee"-brow)This is the hard-right McCain as he chases the blessing of the establishmentThis is the quickest way to refer to the correct version of John McCain. The difference is easy to pick out, even at a distance.

Russia Withdraws from Cold War NATO Treaty
2007-12-12 20:28:00
Vladimir Putin's cowboy foreign policy has recently had Russia flying Cold War -era bomber sorties and making bold moves in the Arctic. Now Russia's low-level saber rattling is starting to get less subtle- they pulled out of the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty Wednesday;Russia has formally suspended its participation in a key arms control agreement dating from the Cold War.The Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty sets limits on troops and weaponry across Europe. The suspension means Russia can move troops without notifying Nato . The bloc voiced "deep regret" over the move.Russia is unhappy with Nato expansion and US plans for missile defences in central Europe and says the treaty no longer serves its interests. The CFE treaty was signed by Western and former Warsaw Pact states in 1990, but was revised in 1999 to take account of former Soviet satellites joining Nato. However the alliance - unlike Russia - has refused to approve the updates until Moscow pulls its remaining t...
Racist Nobel Laureate Sports African Genes
2007-12-12 15:33:00
Here's the definition of irony- James Watson, co-discoverer of DNA and Nobel laureate, whose recent comments that black African s aren't as smart as white people proved his racist nature, very likely had an African great-grandparent. From the NY Times; A new analysis of Dr. Watson?s genome shows that he has 16 times the number of genes considered to be of African origin than the average white European does ? about the same amount of African DNA that would show up if one great-grandparent were African, said Kari Stefansson, the chief executive of deCODE Genetics of Iceland, which did the analysis.?This came up as a bit of a surprise,? Dr. Stefansson said in an interview, ?especially as a sequel to his utterly inappropriate comments about Africans.?After the news of Dr. Watson?s genetic ancestry was published in The Times of London on Sunday, much of the British media played the news for a lark, with headlines like ?Revealed: Scientist Who Sparked Racism Row Has Black Genes? and ?DN...

Patriot Act Loses Appeal
2007-12-11 20:25:00
Vague language helped strike down a small part of the Constitutionally-unsound Patriot Act Monday; The ruling released Monday by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal s in San Francisco affirms a 2005 decision by a lower court judge. That judge, Audrey Collins, ruled on a petition seeking to clear the way for U.S. groups and individuals to assist organizations in Turkey and Sri Lanka with training on applying for disaster relief or conducting peace negotiations.Collins said language in the Patriot Act was vague on matters involving training, expert advice or assistance, personnel and service to foreign terrorist organizations. Here's the part that throughly enrages me;Collins' ruling prevented the federal government from enforcing the vague Patriot Act provisions as they apply to the terrorist groups named in the lawsuit. In its 27-page decision, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held that to survive a vagueness challenge, a statute "must be sufficiently clear to put a person of ord...
Obama's Attacks on Edwards Backfire
2007-12-11 14:15:00
Presidential contender Senator Barack Obama released an opposition research paper on John Edwards in response to requests from a local union (United Auto Workers Region 4.) It was full of cheap shots; one of which may come back to haunt the "positive" candidate. From an ABC News blog; The cheapest shot ... that Edwards somehow has something to do with Whirlpool when the company was closing down Maytag plants in Iowa, Illinois, and Arkansas. Why is that a cheap shot? Because the link is that Edwards worked for the controversial Fortress Hedge Fund while it owned stock in Whirlpool as it was shutting down those plants. But some argue a far more direct link exists between Obama and those plants shutting down. It's not one I agree with -- I think both are silly attempts to link candidates to lost jobs -- but I think the one linking Obama to the Crown family to those lost jobs is slightly less ridiculous. The Crown family -- Lester, Renee, James, Paula -- have been supporters, fundraise...

Huckabee Advocated Quarantine for AIDS Patients
2007-12-08 16:58:00
Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee advocated isolating AIDS patients, amongst other fascist and clearly homophobic responses, in a 1992 Associated Press questionnaire. From the AP;Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could "pose a dangerous public health risk."As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies...."In light of the extraordinary funds already being given for AIDS research, it does not seem that additional federal spending can be justified," Huckabee wrote. "An alternative would be to request that multimillionaire celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor (,) Madonna and others who are pushing f...

Drudge Denies Polar Bears Threatened by Global Warming
2007-12-08 15:46:00
The factually-challenged Drudge Report, the fountainhead of news for most of the conservative blogosphere, has a an absurd headline this morning; "Polar Bears Not at Threat From Global Warming ." From the Daily Mail article;Although the town is still accessible only by train or light aircraft, its guesthouses are packed during late summer and autumn, when the vast ice-sheet over the bay melts, forcing around 1,000 bears to lollop around for months on the shore. Lately, however, it is not only polar bear watchers who come flocking. With the clamour over global warming, it has become a magnet for an army of environmentalists and climatologists who have given Churchill an air of impending doom. The Arctic ice-cap is shrinking fast, is their message, and as it disappears, so too will the polar bears. Today, the polar bear population may hover healthily around 25,000 (they live in Russia, Alaska, Greenland, Norway and Canada). Yet, we are repeatedly warned, if the planet continues ...

CA Ballot Initiative Fails to Make June Ballot
2007-12-07 15:38:00
As I have previously posted about here and here, the backers of the controversial GOP plan to steal California electoral votes has failed, yet again, to find enough fundraising to qualify for the June ballot. It looks like this sneaky move may not affect the 2008 race at all. From the LA Times, emphasis mine;A proposed initiative that drew national attention for its potential to affect next year's presidential election will not appear on the June ballot, organizers said Thursday.Republican backers of the measure, which could have tilted the presidential contest toward the GOP nominee by changing how California awards electoral votes, conceded that they were unable to raise sufficient funds.Sacramento consultant Dave Gilliard, the campaign manager, said that even if a financial angel were to shower the campaign with $1 million, there was not enough time to qualify the measure for June."I was surprised that more people that finance these types of efforts didn't step forward," Gillia...

President Bush Lied About Iran's Nuke Program
2007-12-06 14:52:00
Most progressives who watched Bush 's press conference surely thought the same thing I did when the President said this (emphasis throughout this post mine);Q Mr. President, thank you. I'd like to follow on that. When you talked about Iraq, you and others in the administration talked about a mushroom cloud; then there were no WMD in Iraq. When it came to Iran, you said in October, on October 17th, you warned about the prospect of World War III, when months before you made that statement, this intelligence about them suspending their weapons program back in '03 had already come to light to this administration. So can't you be accused of hyping this threat? And don't you worry that that undermines U.S. credibility?THE PRESIDENT: David, I don't want to contradict an august reporter such as yourself, but I was made aware of the NIE last week. NIE Report Clearly Proves Iran Warmongering
2007-12-04 15:11:00
The big news splashed everywhere is the new national intelligence estimate that states Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003;A new U.S. intelligence report concludes that Iran's nuclear weapons development program has been halted since the fall of 2003 because of international pressure ? a stark contrast to the conclusions U.S. spy agencies drew just two years ago.The finding is part of a National Intelligence Estimate on Iran that also cautions that Tehran continues to enrich uranium and still could develop a bomb between 2010 and 2015 if it decided to do so.The conclusion that Iran's weapons program was still frozen, through at least mid-2007, represents a sharp turnaround from the previous intelligence assessment in 2005.This despite the dire assessments of the 2005 NIE;A major U.S. intelligence review has projected that Iran is about a decade away from manufacturing the key ingredient for a nuclear weapon, roughly doubling the previous estimate of five years, accordi...
