The Sneaky Way to the White House
2008-01-30 15:30:00
By Chris Dalby Can one have too much of a good thing? Amidst renewed public and media frenzy over the ongoing American primary season, could it be possible for one to burn-out as the DNC and GOP races realistically narrow to two-man fields? Not if an unexpected turn of events takes place. With Hillary Clinton and Barack ...

Phoenix from the Ashes: The I-Pod Revolution?s Resurrection of Democracy
2008-01-29 15:00:00
By Crispin Williams Apathy towards politics is growing. Low voter turnouts are becoming a trend in the democracies of Europe and America with voting figures slowly dwindling away. Only when voters are presented with extremes of one kind or another is this trend bucked, such as polarised choices for the future, as happened between Royal ...

The Globalised are fighting back against the Globalisers
2008-01-24 16:00:00
By Christopher McGuiness It's been less than two decades since Samuel Huntington proudly proclaimed that a "third wave" of democracy was sweeping through much of the old Second and Third Worlds, bringing about major economic and political reforms. Many observers saw this as unbelievable progress for developing countries, lavishing praise upon the economists and government officials ...

The Reform Treaty: Its Impact on the EU Institutions
2008-01-19 01:05:00
By Brendan Donnelly Introductory Comment Many institutional provisions of the Reform Treaty are framed, perhaps deliberately, in general, permissive or tentative terms. The real impact of these provisions will therefore only emerge in the course of their implementation. This implementation will be influenced by the personalities involved in the workings of the new structures and ...

The EU Reform Treaty: Small Step or Giant Leap?
2008-01-14 14:30:00
By Brendan Donnelly A striking feature of discussion about the European Reform Treaty agreed by the European Council in Lisbon has been the ability of commentators, confronted with exactly the same text, to disagree radically over the document’s significance. For some, it is a mildly disappointing document, lacking in focus and ambition; for others it is a springboard for exciting and far-reaching future developments; for yet others, particularly in the United Kingdom, it is a gigantic step towards the European superstate. To some extent, these different assessments are matters of conscious political positioning. Those eager for further institutional reform in the Union do not wish to accept Mr. Brown’s conclusion that no further institutional changes can be entertained for at least ten years. The Treaty’s godfathers, such as Mrs. Merkel and Mr. Sarkozy, are naturally bent on stressing its wide-ranging significance. Those eager in the United Kingdom to provoke a ...

The Polish Voter on the BBC Politics Show
2008-01-13 19:13:00
I am a regular viewer of the BBC's political shows and normally find them interesting and well informed. The report on the "Polish Voter" on today's Politics Show however was the worst piece of political journalism I have seen in a long time. Apart from the fact that there are many non-Polish EU voters in ...

Why Engaging EU Voters is Important
2008-01-13 13:00:00
By David Schoibl Photo by vx_lentz Engaging EU voters, especially in London , is important because: It engages a large, so far passive section of London’s population in choosing how London is run. People who work in London, pay taxes in London, commute in London, raise families in London, should be made aware of their right to have a say ...

A Left-Wing Godesberg ? the German SPD?s new Hamburg Programme
2008-01-11 01:02:00
By Detlev Albers The event deserves Europe’s attention: the German Social Democrats adopted a new party programme at their party conference at the end of October 2007. After Berlin (1989) and Godesberg (1959), this is the third post-war party programme. If one wants to cover the whole party history, the Weimar Republic party programmes Heidelberg (1925) ...

2008-01-08 23:47:00

2008-01-08 00:41:00
By Crispin Williams It is sad that with a new year blossoming and all the hope and promise of progress it brings, one of humanity’s most awful flaws continues to dog Europe into 2008 ? the sexual abuse of children. Although this remains a global problem, Europe has recently seen a spate of these harrowing incidents ...

The Challenge of Supercapitalism
2008-01-07 01:10:00
By Robert B. Reich Capitalism and democracy were supposed to be the twin ideological pillars capable of bringing unprecedented prosperity and freedom to the world. Conventional wisdom holds that where either capitalism or democracy flourishes, the other must soon follow. Yet today, the two are diverging. By almost any measure, global capitalism is triumphant. Most nations ...

The Iowa Caucuses ? What are the Results and what do they mean?
2008-01-04 03:34:00
Update 4.30 GMT How can these results be interpreted? Apart from the big disappointments for Romney and Clinton, the way Obama has won was the revelation of the Iowa caucus. By Dexter Thillien In a recent special edition of Newsweek dealing with America’s future role in the world, a few contributors argued for the need of the USA to renew its soft power and the power of its ideas, especially in the Middle East; and to prove their point, they took the examples of the role ...

Death of a Heroine, not a Martyr
2007-12-28 14:54:00
By Chris Dalby The world is a poorer place this day with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto . Although controversy surrounded her and with the veil of corruption never quite dispelled, Ms. Bhutto was still a highly positive face to place on such a troubled country as Pakistan . Kamila Shamsie writes eloquently in the Guardian that “despite the ...
