Interview with Blogger Zahid H. Lilani
2007-12-18 14:47:00
Zahid H. Lilani blogs at My Life Dump.Could you tell us what made you decide to blog?I like to write and I like to talk. I believe I am interesting when it comes to certain topics. I tend to have a twisted view on things but happen to be an optimist. Reading other interesting blogs doing commentary on things I really like made me feel that maybe I can do the same thing and share my views with people. I also have little interest in web programming languages and design standards and having my own blog allows me play around with few elements and maybe learn something new and worthwhile. What do you think sets Your blog apart from other blogs?I don?t talk about just one topic but I try to talk about things that might be interesting and at the same time give out some information that is useful. Basically, I am trying to be Jack of all trades, master of none. I am not predictable, I tend to take sides every now and then and surprise myself and my blog readers. If you could choose one chara...

2007-12-18 14:34:00
Zack Ajmal is originally from Pakistan but now lives in Atlanta, Georgia in the US. He is an Electrical Engineer with interests in the areas of computer vision and image and video processing. He likes to travel, hike, backpack, take photographs and read about science fiction, history and religion. He has also been blogging for more than five years at Procrastination.Could you tell us what made you decide to blog?Around 2001, I started reading some political blogs. I realized at the time that I had my views on all sorts of matters and wanted to discuss them with others. My main topics of discussion at the time were US politics and Islam. So in mid-2002, I started blogging on blogspot. A year later, I wanted more freedom and tweaking so I got my own domain and installed Movable Type. What do you think sets Your blog apart from other blogs? At the time I started blogging, Muslim and/or Pakistani blogs were very thin on the ground. So it can be argued that I brought a different point of v...

Engineering for Politics and Life, Part 1 of 2
2007-12-17 08:15:00
by Dan TowEvery individual has his or her own perspective on the world, and we can often find major insights when we catch a glimpse of the world from another person?s perspective, and we consider what that adds to our own view. I have written my previous articles partly to share an American perspective on the world (not the American perspective, since there are as many American perspectives as Pakistani perspectives!). Today?s musings will focus more on another source of my perspective, engineering, which may shape my point of view even more than my American citizenship. I have long observed that many of the worst sorts of mistakes in politics and life can be seen as failures to follow good engineering principles in problem-solving. (I do not mean to claim that these principles are unique to engineering or unknown to those untrained in engineering, however ? some of the best of what I?m calling engineering instincts are held and followed by persons with no engineering training!) He...

Mobile Numbers of Girls For Sale
2007-12-16 06:32:00
For the last two weeks, I was harassed, annoyed, cajoled and threatened by some anonymous and obnoxious calls by some five or six persons on my cell number. Initially when one or two guys called me, I took it as routine missed calls in which people tried to exploit the fluke. But then it became a norm, and I was really listened to some horrible music. It?s hard to believe but every day in the last two week, I received some 30 or 40 wrong calls on average from different unique numbers on my mobile phone. The experience was horrible. Every one was polite initially. Their objective was same and that was to strike a lasting friendship with the girl on the other side of the mobile. The frightening thing was that though they didn?t know my name and whereabouts (though some pretended that they knew), but they were roughly aware of my visage. The method of every person was more or less same, though some tried to innovate it. Average callers called me, apologized to me for disturbing me, then ...

The emergency is not yet over
2007-12-15 12:12:00
The emergency was imposed without any reason on 3rd November 2007 put the Judiciary behind the un-seen bars, which was for the first time in history working for the well-being of a common man. And off-course masses were being actively supported. The allegations for which the Chief Justice of Pakistan was forced to plea for a justice were proved wrong with the passage of time till 15th of December. Suicide bombing could not be stopped, law and order situation merely improved, price hike is on its peak etc. What was the motive to undermine that judiciary which once took oath under first Provision Constitution Order (PCO). Why there was a need that the same has to take the oath under second PCO. Time is the best judge of every action of ours, and time has proved that it was just to retain in the president?s chair and nothing else. Does this not mean that we all are above the law and rules are for fools? Does this not mean that re-instatement of Rule of Law automatically sends the judge...

What Elections 2008 mean for Pakistanis
2007-12-14 18:13:00
For the majority of people in Pakistan 'free elections' mean free meals, free fun, and free holidays. Whatever the lawyers, disposed judges, media, APDM and civil society says of boycotting the elections, the thing is that majority of our population, who lives in the villages and is illiterate and ill-informed is not boycotting.Elections are the times of fanfare and festivals. It is one of those rare times for these people to extract anything from their candidates. These candidates are normally the Chaudhary, Khan, Sardar or Wadera of that area, who do nothing but open a 'Lunger' on their 'deras' for the masses. People come there; eat lavish meals, and take tea, smoke for free, praise the candidate, and leave to comeback the next day to reiterate the short-lived saga.Besides of free food, people eagerly await the public meetings and processions and the ultimate day of election. As all these become a source of income for them. Candidates typically pay from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 t...

Flour Prices
2007-12-12 08:59:00
President Mr Musharaf has announced that flour and oil prices has to be raised as international prices are on the up. We know we import oil from different countries so we are bound to purchase at their desired prices (as set by OPEC), but Sir, with due respect when reaping season of wheat comes government announces that we will produce wheat more than the targeted. But when it goes to mills for grinding the prices is on the up. I have learnt some economics and believe in supply and demand rules. The prices of a commodity should go down if it is produced above demand. But the streams are flowing upwards in this country:1. We do not depend on others are we are self-sufficient in Wheat so why to relate its price to international market.2. If the price is on the higher side after wheat is being produced more than required then why the shortage is created, government is helpless in curbing such people. It is economic terrorism and Shooting them all in road-cross publicly who are involved...

Imperial Decree
2007-12-12 08:03:00
Pragma is basically an imperial decree that becomes part of the fundamental law of the land. The imperial decrees are what seem to drive the politics and affairs of this country, we so lovingly call Pakistan. For Pakistan, the funny thing is that it has multiple imperial sources apparently, but all those imperial sources converge at the single Oracle at the far end.Imperial decree from Washington was issued that Benazir returns, and so that happened. Imperial decree from Riyadh was issued that Nawaz Sharif returns, and so that happened. Imperial decree was issued that elections are to be held, and we are into the elections. Imperial decree was issued that Wardi is no longer necessary, and so we are without it now. Imperial decree was issued that both PML-N and PPP are to take part, and there we are.But why Imperial decree about the shortage of food, about dismal infrastructure and about true democracy are not issued? Why is it that we don?t happen to see any Imperial decrees regardi...
"Emergency" Served the Purpose?
2007-12-12 07:18:00
Emergency plus was imposed on 3rd November 2007. Taking the plea to control the deteriorating law and order situation prevailing in the country. The very first step taken right after imposing Emergency was to suspend the infant judiciary. Now notices are being issued to vacate their official residences and cars. Government has very kindly announced through Attorney General of Pakistan (the funniest personality I have ever seen) that the Emergency shall be lifted on 15th December and the Rule of Law will be reinstated to its original shape. Provisional Constitution Order and Rule of Law are two contradictory things. I real re-instatement of Rule of Law means the Judges who have taken oath under PCO shall go to their previous state and the undermined Judiciary shall be freed. Rule of Law means that, no persons just retired from government service shall be allowed to take part in politics unless a gap of two years is in-between retirement/resignation and Political involvement. Rule of ...

A Joke Gone Too Far
2007-12-11 04:09:00
By Fahd MirzaTo me, for some weird reasons, the name of APDM never stuck. It isn?t a name to get popularized in the slogan-happy nation of Pakistan. After the just concluded meeting of APDM, it was clear that this boat is not going to float around for much longer, and everyone is going in its own way now, as far as the election in coming January are concerned.Half of the opposition is now hell bent on boycotting the elections no matter what, while the other half is in the favour of contesting them. The half which doesn?t want to have anything to do with the votes hasn?t got much clout as far as public standing and vote bank is concerned, and is consist of Qazi Hussain, Imran Khan, and Achakzai, while the other half which is the most important, and the only meaningful party in APDM is Nawaz Sharif?s Muslim League.Due to Saudi, American, and European pressure Nawaz Sharif is not opting for the boycott and he is also understands that by boycotting the elections he would handover the fr...

How Suicide Bomber is Born
2007-12-09 15:37:00
In these current times there are geopolitical areas of strife where there is basic conflict in religious practice, and more importantly in economic systems. Not the systems themselves necessarily, but the lack of efficacy in their market places. We are not seeing the traditional excuses for strife brought into play here; the usual oppression by the ?haves? of the ?have nots,? but the very real manifestation of the utter failure of whole societies (or a communities without traditional political boundaries) that are impotent to provide for their own future without diminishing someone else?s. When that is the case, there are a lot of young, idle men and no industry with which to focus their dreams. The suicide bomber is born.

Vote 08 in Pakistan
2007-12-08 20:40:00
Like the world is not much concerned about the 2008 elections in Pakistan , Pakistanis are also not losing much sleep over them either. After seeing the un-hindered installation of an Army chief as President, and then the way judiciary was neutralized, and media was taught a memorable lesson, it?s hard to expect any thing fair and free in the short run. There isn?t much tempo about the elections, even when the so-called political leadership is back in the country. If you pickup the newspaper it seems that the whole of Pakistan is against Musharraf, and perhaps it is infact. Lawyers, journalists, judges, civil societies, NGOs, human rights activist, students, and the silent majority of the country all have shown their resentment in different ways at different levels, but there is no coherent and guided approach henceforth. All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDM) is trying hard to bring all the opposition at a unified place, but how it could achieve that in the presence of Mohtarma Kursi ...

Defection!!!
2007-12-08 11:44:00
After dealing with and using computers for over 12 years with a geeky degree in Management Information Systems i have come to realize that there are only two forces in the computer galaxy. The good side that is the various versions of window driven machines & the dark side with its sleek lines and alternative looks by Apple computers. Specifications wise these two types of computers are the same at different levels, that is in terms of Gigahertz(speed) Ram(Flow) and storage space these days. they all have a modem, they all have DVD drives etc etc The main difference to me has always been the operating system. Right from the start the makers at Apple computers have been at an immense disadvantage, as the pc industry is totally dominated by ?Windows? touting machines. Lets face it, Windows is the be all and most popular of all operating systems ever designed. It has the most software titles, the most users and the most gargantuan organization backing it up. However as the case goe...

Mobilink Lucky Draws

A few days back I happened to go back to my village. During the second day of my visit; when I got pass the road I saw a gathering of seven or eight people. When I got there I saw a driver of local van weeping. On my asking somebody (was a shop keeper) told me that this person (driver) got a phone call from someone; who promised him for a reward of 1 million if he can send him credit cards of 2000 rupees. According to that person he belonged to Mobilink. Without any hesitation the driver gave him all he asked and then the person disappeared. His phone number is in no body?s use now. When Mobilink announced that it is offering its Jazz customers the facility to share their balances then two or three days after that I received a message that if you dial this code then your balance will get double in the celebration of Jazz birthday. My maternal uncle asked me that his office fellow has received a call from a self proclaimed Mobilink employee and is offering him 0.5 million rupees for...

Shoaib Akhtar's dance with Indian Girls in Kolkata

Shoaib Akhtar likes to get himself humiliated in public every now and then. Now as he has lost his steam, and knows that his future is bleak and on the verge of termination, he tries to get the spotlight by acting weird and strange.Even as Pakistan faced defeat after defeat at the hands of India, their ace pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar was busy bending it, not on the cricket field but on the dance floor of a luxury hotel in India with three girls. Akhtar, known as the Rawalpindi Express for his tearaway bowling, was reportedly unfit for the third Test against India and supposedly back in Pakistan receiving medical treatment.According to the report, Pakistan team manager Talat fumed: ?I want nothing to do with Shoaib Akhtar. American Control
2007-12-03 00:38:00
by Dan TowI have noted a recurring theme to comments to my articles and others on this site. Comments often say something like ?Oh, yes, that?s a fine idea, but in the end, we are powerless, because America is controlling the government of Pakistan, anyway ? they are merely puppets.? In this article, I will discuss my view, from an American perspective, of the degree to which America controls other nations, and I will discuss larger issues of how, and how much, any entity controls any other entity.First, I want to clarify some definitions. When I hear of ?American control,? I sometimes sense a belief in an almost supernatural entity ?America? that has thoughts of its own, makes decisions of its own, whispers in the ears of leaders of other countries, and that wields mighty, magical power. This is nonsense, of course. On this planet, the only decision makers and thinkers that matter, politically, are individual human beings, and only individual human beings wield political power, as ...

For PCB Its Time For Reflection
2007-12-02 08:07:00
Pakistan?s ignominious defeats on Indian soil amidst a hostile crowd and a highly talented adversary has also got some silver linings. Like they say that every defeat and every stumble is an opportunity, so it?s high time that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shouldn?t get panicked and starts taking desperate actions. Those desperate actions are normally to throw some players out of the team, and then call back those players who were thrown out disdainfully just couple of months back. So the vicious cycle remains continue. PCB must overhaul the existing team, but there is no point in brining back the previously thrown out blow jobs.PCB should, for a time, forget the current idiots in the team. It should just shut down his eyes from that facet. What it should do is to concentrate and focus all of its clout, money, resources, manpower, and everything else on finding the talent within the country.Passion for cricket is flowing across the country. Pakistan is brimming with top-notch batsmen,...

The Lure Of Power
2007-12-01 20:22:00
Power.... something which the elite crave for and the masses know nothing about. They say nothing corrupts like power and our politicians are perhaps the best example of this sort of corruption. They say it was power that was Alexanders undoing in the end. As mere military conquest was not enough for this great general, he wanted to rule the world. The same with Hitler, Mussolini, Nixon, Lenin, Zia Ul Haq, etc etc etcThese days though the lust for power evident in our current crop of election hopefuls is nothing less than pure comical. As the daughter of the vest shifts her strategy from boycotting to non boycotting the upcoming elections on an hourly basis. With the various marriage (sorry) deal hopefuls like Phajlu of the (Orange turban fame) and the various long bearded ones in M.M.A following suit. Most parties are also using the ever popular "we will boycott, but with the option of fighting" clause of their manifestos. The nomination papers having being filed are also produci...

Putin vs Musharraf
2007-11-30 19:10:00
United States pulled the rug from under the feet of General ® Pervez Musharraf , the former commando who broke all the records by getting himself elected as a President of a free country while remaining in his army uniform. By not paying heed to the much lamented beseeching by him, King of Saudia compelled Nawaz Sharif to go back to his country. Now Musharraf has become President, and courtesy to Negroponte Bahadur, he is once again on the route of deal with Benazir. Fazl-ur-Rehman, the creepiest of the creeps, is already in his pocket. Musharraf had tears in his eyes when he got out of the uniform, and he was glum when he sworn in as the President of Pakistan in the ?Sherwani?. Musharraf pledged to ?serve? the country for a long time, and people were once again appalled. Peoples? joys at the shedding of Wardi proved short-lived.What a country we have, where we don?t have any say. Where we don?t elect our leaders, and where we don?t have anywhere to complain and anywhere to protest. A...
