Tucson Night Blooming Cereus
2008-06-08 03:58:00
One night this past week I had the opportunity to photograph a Night Blooming Cereus cactus. Each bud only blooms for one night. They start to open just before sunset. The cactus I was photographing had 3 opening the same night and a single bloom the following night. It is only the third or forth time this cactus has bloomed in 17 years.

Skype for the budget minded and hearing impaired
2008-06-02 06:54:00
Last week I was part of a conference call. Many of you probably don't know this but I'm hearing impaired. I got a bad cold when I was 27 and the virus destroyed some of the nerve endings in my left ear which left me with a major hearing loss and a very loud ringing sound that never goes away.

Termites in Tucson Not Terminal
2008-05-27 17:48:00
Everyone says about Tucson and termites: "If you don't have them you will get them." They are that prevalent in our environment. They are subterranean and as the saying about vampires goes "They can't stand the light of day" neither can these termites so they build themselves little tunnels to stay out of the sunlight.

Winter Weather Returns to Tucson this weekend
2008-05-23 23:13:00
Winter weather? Well winter weather here means anything between 50 and 80 degrees. But, it is unseasonably cold this weekend. We woke up in the low 50’s and it is only 66 degrees outside as I write this. If I wanted to sensationalize the weather the way the media does the ...

A Coat for a Cup and Moccasins or a Home
2008-05-20 16:57:00
What we need and what we want are different, but you often can’t tell that from today’s society. Have you heard the saying “The more you have the more you want.”? It is true. I hear and read about the credit crunch, the housing crunch, and the lack of affordable housing. There is a huge disconnect in this nation between what we want and what we need. I read awhile back about the woes of a family loosing there home because they could no longer “Afford” to make their payments on the home and had gone into foreclosure. Yes, they were about to be without a home. But the big concern to the family besides being homeless was where to store their 4 cars, 4 ATV’s their boat and motor home. They were making payments on all of these. Apparently, these things they could “afford”. It was the home that was un-affordable. I read everyday in the paper about how bad the economy is. Folks the economy is far from bad. How do I know this?...

If You Build it They will Come
2008-05-19 16:07:00
If you build it will they come is more like it This saying is from a movie. Hello, I’m saying this again. THIS IS FROM A MOVIE. I know some think movies are reality and can’t make the distinction between the two. Ever been to a Star Trek convention or a service at a Jedi church? In reality, If you build it and they don’t come you file for bankruptcy. This is happening now in reality all across the country. Of course new housing starts are down. It appears they will be that way for some time to come. Just because the “Arizona Daily Star” reports there are 2 bright spots soften otherwise grim economic picture doesn’t mean it is all over and construction is going back to what it was in the past few years. Far from it, it looks like we could never see it again like it was and that is a very good thing. New home permits in Tucson edged up in April, (this is a bright spot?) This is no big deal, so a few more permits were pulled in April over ...

Oleanders are a popular choice for landscaping in Tucson . It can be a bush, a hedge even a tree of sorts. It blooms long through the summer and is hearty against the heat. It tends to be a bit dirty and trashy but even the leaves it drops with flower petals have a beauty of their own.

Tucson Ironwood Trees in Bloom
2008-05-06 21:01:00
This week I'm seeing the ironwood trees full of blossoms. They are an amazing tree and not far from where I live there is a 20 acre preserve for them. The high school just down the road is "Ironwood High School". This is the time of year they are easiest to identify because of the purple and white blossoms.
