Buy plants at Cactus & Tropicals in Salt Lake City and Draper, Utah
2007-10-25 22:30:00
This post might be a little late considering that most plants are now shedding their leaves, but I'll go ahead and write it anyway. If you are looking for plants of any kind, you must go to Cactus & Tropicals. I was there a few weeks ago buying a gift card and I stopped to look around. There is an impressive variety of indoor and outdoor plants as well as statues, fountains and such to beautify your home or yard. I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place. You can follow the outer path so that you conveniently don't miss anything. I'm curious to see what they'll put in there during the winter - if they'll sell more indoor plants or what. Don't let the winter scare you way though. Go and check it out. Vote if you like this blog

Utah's real estate market is not a "bust"
2007-10-23 22:03:00
I received this email yesterday from the Utah Association of REALTORS regarding a story in Thursday's Salt Lake Tribune. You'll be able to read it for yourself below, but it's essentially UAR's rebuttal that the Utah market is not a "bust". I received an updated email indicating that the Trib got the point and isn't taking anymore emails, but the information here is important for those of us in the Salt Lake market. Salt Lake Tribune gets it wrongUAR encourages members to contact Trib regarding Thursday?s story At a time when Money Magazine and The Associated Press are reporting that Utah is bucking the national housing slump, the Salt Lake Tribune is saying ? Utah ?s housing boom now a bust.? Thursday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported on its front page that new home demand was at a 17-year low, a story that included broad generalizations about the Wasatch Front housing market. The Utah Association of REALTORS® is encouraging REALTORS® to contact the Tribune directly to tell t...

Buy a home if you can, but rent one if you must
2007-10-22 19:47:00
Today I would like to say a little something to anyone who might be considering renting instead of purchasing a home. Have you ever had someone tell you that renting is a necessary evil at best and that you should avoid it at all costs? I've heard that more than a few times. The rent vs. buy debate is possibly as old as real estate itself and there will always be those who take one extreme position over the other. I am directing my comments to those people who have always been told that there are no benefits to renting yet necessarily find themselves faced with that option. Let's face it. You may not be able to purchase a home right now. You may have less than perfect credit, lack of credit, no possibility of saving enough for a down payment right now, or a number of other obstacles in your way. So you may just have to rent for now. Just for now. But let's take this opportunity to look at the upsides of renting before you hyperventilate. How wonderful that you have no ...

Blogging, blogging everywhere
2007-10-16 19:32:00
I'm thrilled to see that blogging is becoming the norm rather than the exception. I'm even more thrilled that I'm not one of the latecomers, although late is better than never. Invitation to be a member of different blogging communities have been pouring into my inbox as of late. It seems that now everybody wants to create an online blogging community full of local experts. I see this as only positive, since it affords bloggers more forums to share their creativity. On top of that, my own family members are jumping on the blogging bandwagon. Before long, blogging just might be our preferred method of communication! I can only say thank you to Activerain for being a place where I have been able to catch on to this blogging thing - and just in time too.Vote if you like this blog

Utah Symphony & Opera 2007 - 2008 is about to begin
2007-10-11 21:51:00
In last Sunday's newspaper there was a pullout section about the Utah Symphony and Opera 's 2007 - 2008 season that is just beginning. I read it over and it looks like this season will be a really good one. I know there are many people that would not think of sitting through one of these performances, but I would encourage you to give it a try this season. We are fortunate here in Utah to be able to host such an organization as the USO. Their facility, Abravanel Hall, is acoustically superior to most and has a beautiful interior. The very talented conductor Keith Lockhart is is in 10th season. If you've ever been to one, you know that USO puts on a wonderful opera. This season will showcase Cinderella, Don Giovanni, and The Flying Dutchman, and Tosca. You can visit their website at utahsymphonyopera.org to find out when each one plays. There of course will be many other non-opera performances throughout the season as well.Again, if Abravanel Hall at this time of year has neve...

Beware of real estate wolves in big yellow Hummers
2007-10-11 18:12:00
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against yellow hummers. But my seller had an experience yesterday that warranted this post title. My seller lives in a difficult area where homes are not selling like we would like them to. Just about every seller in this neighborhood that I know of has had to drop their price at least once. Unfortunately, there are wolves out there who drive through the neighborhood looking for sellers who may be out of doors, like mine was yesterday, to play on their emotions by telling them that they noticed the home has dropped in price recently but they can offer more than the home's asking price. They then say that they couldn't pay it all right now, so the seller will just have to accept some earnest money in the mean time. Whatever their intentions were, they still haven't contacted me to make this so called full price offer. Luckily my seller is educated, and she quickly got rid of the wolf. She says if they come back again, she will tell them ...

Zig Ziglar quote on education and learning
2007-10-10 01:31:00
It's been a little while since I posted a Zig Ziglar quote, but I've been reading them again lately and I found a great one to post today. As they usually do, this quote applies to my life as if Zig knew me personally. "You can finish school, and even make it easy - but you never finish your education, and it is seldom easy".Here's what I conclude from this: If life or business is easy, we're probably not learning anything. If life or business is tough, we're probably progressing in some way or learning some thing. It's my hope for myself and anyone reading this that we will start to recognize in the midst of our tough times that we are learning and growing, and then things might take on a different feeling. Why should we wait until something hard is over before we realize that we actually did learn something? So maybe a lifelong commitment to learning is also an open invitation for tough times to come along. I say that in a positive way though. How does the saying go,...

Halloween in Utah - some things to do
2007-10-08 19:42:00
I started this post to write about one of the immensely popular Halloween activities in Utah - Witches Night Out at Gardner Village - and along the way found another neat Halloween resource. More on that later. My mother used to work at Gardner Village at the candy store and I remember always seeing her wear a witch costume around Halloween. Since then I have come to know that October at Gardner Village is a huge deal. It's usually packed with people and excitement as they go to see the witch displays and shop the many stores at the village. There are also carriage rides, dinner shows, and drawings for prizes. You just have to go and experience it. I'm not saying it's loads of fun for both sexes, as men might prefer to stay home and watch the game, but hey you never know. The other Halloween resource I came across is a neat site at www.utahholidayguide.com. Go there and click on Halloween and you'll find a good list of ideas of places to go and things to do during the Ha...

Snow in the mountains already!
2007-10-08 19:41:00
After an early winter scare, it seems that we are returning to autumn again. Look up at the mountains though, and you will see that winter has come a bit early. I do love winter, but I maintain that we still need a little fall since Halloween hasn't even come yet. That said, I'm really going to enjoy every moment of these nice sunny fall days since we never know when they'll suddenly be taken and replaced by cold.

What do you think of Salt Lake Magazine and Utah Style and Design?
2007-10-04 23:00:00
I don't yet know quite what to think of Salt Lake Magazine and Utah Style and Design . My first impression of each was that they exuded superficiality. The multi-million dollar homes and model searches seemed a little - I don't know - cheesy. On second look, I've found that despite their flaws they actually do have some good content that a Utah resident can really use. I suppose one's opinion of the magazines depends on what they are reading them for. Some might pick them up to view the very best and finest of what Utah has to offer. Some may be interested in learning about something new to do. I don't really know what my purpose is in reading them, except that I work in the real estate industry and I like to keep informed of what happens here. My opinion is still being shaped then, so I'll keep reading. Have you read them? If so, what do you think about how they portray Utah? What do you like or dislike about them?
