Parents? Guide to Text Messaging
2007-11-13 12:06:00
Even people over 30 know what it means when we see RSVP or BYOB.  The language of text messaging is really not much different.  Entire phrases are reduced to a few letters so people can type quickly with their thumbs on cell phones and other electronic devices, using minimal text to communicate.  I highly recommend A Guide to Understanding Online ...

Rent or Sell? Not an Easy Decision
2007-11-08 13:24:00
Crofton homeowners may consider renting instead of selling, if they have to relocate during a buyer’s market like we’re in now.  Since many Crofton residents have substantial home equity and low monthly payments, they would likely have a positive cash flow.  Additionally, they may be in a financial position to wait out the market and sell the next time a ...

Crofton Schools Shuffle Boundaries
2007-11-02 20:50:00
If you use the School Locator on my website, you’ll only get part of the story.  Today’s school assignments may or may not be an accurate reflection of which Crofton-area school your child will attend in 2008–2009.  With construction of a new elementary school on Nantucket Road (now referred to as Gambrills Elementary, although the school is actually located in Crofton), you can expect to see shuffling in some school boundaries next year.    Redistricting is a lengthy process that takes into account many factors including overcrowding in existing schools, neighborhood boundaries, and assignments for middle and high schools.  While a final decision will not be made until Spring, a Redistricting Committee of parents with children in the affected schools voted earlier this week to approve this plan for recommendation to the School Superintendent:   Children who live on the east side of Route 3 that no...

Five Fall Gardening Must-Do’s
2007-11-02 03:36:00
Thinking of selling your Crofton home in Spring?  If so, it’s more important than ever for you to pull your green thumb out of your pocket and take care of these Fall Garde n Must-Do’s.  They will reward you with a beautiful lawn and garden when the growing season begins in Spring - just in time to put your home on the market! In fact, you could say that spring curb-appeal begins today! 1. Bulbs – Now is the season for planting your spring-flowering bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils.  It’s also time to lift or “harvest” tender bulbs from your garden for next season, including gladiola, dahlia and tuberous begonia bulbs.  Place them in a sheltered place, leaving the foliage intact, for two or three weeks – except begonia stems, which should dry until they are brittle enough to break off. Store these bulbs over the winter in vermiculite or peat moss in a dark cool pla...

Halloween Safety Tips for Crofton Kids
2007-10-30 13:58:00
Keep the REAL spooks out of your children’s Halloween night by taking these precautions. 1.  Accompany children when they go trick-or-treating – If they’re a little older, stand back so you’re not “lurking”, but don’t let a pedophile take advantage of this great opportunity to troll for vulnerable kids.  Adolescents are not too old to be at risk on Halloween or at any other time. (You might want to check the Maryland Sex Offender Registry, and avoid those residences when you take your children trick-or-treating.)   2.  Encourage children to go trick-or-treating in small groups.  If the group is too large, you might lose count if one is missing.  My grandkids love it that their parents dress up in costume, too, but other kids may wish the adults to be less visible.  Make this decision in advance, to avoid last minute hassle and controversy as you leave to go Trick-or-treat...

5 Ways to Finance a $500,000 Crofton Home
2007-10-26 23:46:00
With prices of detached homes hovering around a half million dollars in the Crofton area, it’s not surprising to see young adults who grew up in Crofton moving to other areas and even other parts of the country.  My own daughter, Susan, relocated to the Dallas-Ft.Worth area in Texas last spring, where nice single family homes are available under $200,000. Yet there are financing options available for buying a $500,000 Crofton home, making this community accessible for many people in this high-income area to take advantage of today’s extraordinary “buyer’s market”: 1)  Jumbo VA loan up to $650,000.  VA loans are still “no money down” up to $417,000, but buyers must put down 25% of the difference between $417,000 and $650,000.  The resulting $20,750 (on a $650,000 property) is only about 4% down, and the current rate (10/26/07) is 6.375. (Remember, active duty military personnel will have ...
