Spring 'Greening' Around the House
2008-03-17 17:49:00
Practically everywhere you look around the house, there's a way to be greener. From improving indoor air quality to waste reduction to energy savings, there are many easy steps you can take to ease the impact on the environment.Paint it greenEven if it's not your color of choice, green can be incorporated into your home quickly and cost-effectively with paint. The buzzwords (or initials) in paints these days are VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. Simply put, VOCs are chemicals that can sometimes be detected by odors in the air -- and that can affect a home's indoor air quality. Besides having low- to zero-VOCs, the paint you select should also be high performing. The more durable the product is, the better it covers and the less frequently you need to repaint -- which is another benefit to the environment. For example, Duration Home Interior Latex from Sherwin-Williams has a low-VOC formula that allows most smudges, spills and splatters to be easily wiped away with water or mil...

Remodel Your Outdoor Spaces
2008-03-17 17:47:00

An outdoor remodel is one improvement that nearly always offers a great return on investment. Despite news of a potential economic downturn, many builders are reporting an uptick in building comfortable outdoor living areas such as decks, porches, patios and pool areas, with amenities including gas-powered heat lamps, outdoor showers, and even full-service kitchens.Deckorators, a company that designs and manufactures decorative balusters, post caps, post covers and railing accessories, has seen its sales increase every month for the past several years."Consumers are investing in their homes by adding decorative elements to their existing outdoor areas and creating expansions to decks and patios," says Rick Preble, general manager of Deckorators. Also aiding growth is an emphasis on creative design by deck...

Colors for 2008 Culled from the Circle of Life
2008-03-14 16:08:00
When selecting colors for inside the home and for your favorite outdoor spaces, where do you find inspiration? Color experts suggest looking to all walks of life across the globe, starting with nature, art, travel, culinary and fashion influences. "The 2008 nature colors are inspired by the botanical beauty of some of the world's most interesting plants," says Donna Schroeder of Krylon's color and design services team, the Color Marketing Group, Color Association of the United States, and the American Society of Interior Designers. "We are seeing designers and savvy consumers seeking more deep blue-thgreens, dark pine and the surprise of chartreuse balanced by earthier tones such as bamboo and cork to create a soothing, Zen-like garden retreat." Blues are a predominant force in 2008, stepping out from the influences of both nature and Scandinavian art. Look for all hues of blue -- cool, bright, deep and rich -- perhaps infused with shimmering peacock colors or shades of the deep ...

Spring is a favorite home improvement season, and a top project on many homeowners' lists is building a new deck or improving an existing one. As awareness grows of how home improvement projects affect the environment, more homeowners are discovering the advantages of incorporating green building materials into their deck plans. Consumers expect to double their spending on green products and services in the next year, according to the 2007 ImagePower Green Brands Survey. Choices for homeowners to bring more green goods to their homes now go beyond compact florescent light bulbs and insulated windows - they can extend to deck projects as well. Today, decking materials are available that are not only long lasting and aesthetically appealing, but also make efficient use of recycled materials. This Spring's Hot Home Decorating Trend
2008-03-14 16:03:00
Want to get a feel for what's hot in the world of home decor these days? All you have to do is visit a couple of model homes in your community and take a good look around. You're sure to recognize a recurring theme. The cabinets you saw in the high-end kitchen closely resemble the furniture in the adjoining breakfast nook, and the ceiling molding in the dining room matches perfectly as well. These days, designers are going out of their way to carry a single theme throughout the entire house. It's a design trend called unification.A good example of this practice can be found at fashion and lifestyle expert Robert Verdi's Luxe Laboratory, an innovative venue for displaying the best of today's luxury brands for the home. The lab, situated inside a stunning 3,400 square foot loft on the 13th floor of an art deco building on West 30th Street in Manhattan, features a collection of luxury brands -- displayed in context -- to create a seamless total experience that stimulates the style ...

Home Decor in Neutral Colors
2008-03-14 15:45:00
Neutral colors (such as white, taupe and beige) give you a beautiful canvas to work upon when it comes to home decor. Limited use of colors and patterns help you to create a sophisticated environment along with interesting focal points in rooms, garden and living area. Natural fibers are available in these colors too and have quite different textures for experimenting. The variety of texture in neutral natural colors infuses peace and calm in the home environment. Here are some tips for home decor in neutral colors: Simple peaceful homes mostly use off-white or beige colored furniture. To create a warm comforting rustic look, use dark neutral colors such as shades of brown, rust and black. Natural tones are the strong points of a neutral color scheme. Artificial tints can be disturbing to the overall effect. Simple yet sleek homes prefer to use single, multi-purpose and versatile item rather than many small furniture objects. Natural fibers in neutral colors can add texture a...

How To Select A Burglar Alarm
2008-03-14 15:40:00
Burglars dislike noise - it attracts attention. A barking dog is the best deterrent in preventing burglaries. However, a watch dog cannot always be depended upon. Some professional burglars have been known to carry delectable "dog snacks" in their pockets - and with a full stomach, some watch dogs make friends easily and forget their purpose of guarding the premises. The most reliable safe-guard to protect your home and possessions is a reliable alarm. Many types of burglar alarms can be obtained for residential use. It is advisable, however, that basic hardware security measures be followed first. If additional security is desired, the following recommendations could be helpful. Obtain estimates from three alarm companies, notifying each of this procedure. An audible alarm is recommended over silent alarms for residential use in order to first protect persons and secondly, property. Don't depend entirely upon an alarm system to protect you - be sure to use proper locking device...

2008-03-13 17:30:00
One of the easiest ways to save money re-decorating is to paint a room yourself. It can cost anywhere from $200-$500 to have one room painted. Painting it yourself, you can do it for under $30. Here are some tips that we have used to save money painting:1. Check your local hazardous waste recycling center for free or low cost paint. I've painted many rooms and pieces of furniture just by checking their free paint section. I painted the entire exterior of our house for $45 using three of their low cost five gallon buckets of brand new but leftover construction paint.2. Use an old sheet or spend $1.00 for one at a thrift store to use as a drop cloth. Sheets are heavier than the plastic drop cloths at the store and will last for many rooms of painting. Hang over a clothesline or fence to dry before folding and storing.3. When removing the outlet and switch covers, put the screws back into the holes so they don't get lost. You can also put the covers and screws in a zip top sandwich b...

2008-03-12 16:40:00
As a notorious family gathering place, kitchens often become cluttered with everything from bills and report cards to shopping lists and fridge magnets. With spring just around the corner, its time to say good-bye to all that clutter and Tupperware has some simple solutions to help you do it! Compress the Mess : If there is just not enough space in your kitchen, then its time to toss all unnecessary items. Remove objects from kitchen counters that are not essential for everyday cooking (blenders, mixers, juicers, etc.). This will make the room look more spacious and clean and will give you extra room to prepare daily meals. Pantry Antics: Before you take a trip to the grocery store, take a good look inside your food pantry-if in doubt, throw it out! Its safe to assume that the expensive jar of Spanish olives sitting on the shelf for the last five years will never be used and the cans in the back are only useful for gathering dust. If food is stored for too long and in the wrong condi...

The unique look of rawhide country lamp shades for home decor has been popular since the end of the great depression when women first began to look at their homes in ways other than utilitarian. This was the case with not only kitchens, but living rooms and later family rooms and dens also. What is now called southwest decor and western style, as well as ranch style, came about over time as the styles sprung from essential everyday items. The same occurred with country style homes. As the wealthier class began to have second homes called country homes, the working class began to use the same concepts in their interior design also.As primitive style lighting such as oil lamps and lanterns were exchanged for the first rustic lamps, it was rawhide that was chosen to be used the material for lamp shades. Since then, it has been used for years to enhance western and southwestern style in home lighting and for lighting fixtures. If you enjoy the handcrafted work and style of times past, t...

A Simple Guide To Picking Baby Furniture
2008-03-10 16:23:00
The first thing to fit to a new nursery is a smoke detector, for a few pounds (or free from your community fire prevention officer) these essential alarms must be your initial purchase. When your child begins to wander it's important that any unused electrical outlet is sealed with a dummy plastic socket protector to prevent your curious baby from sticking his fingers. Whenever possible, attempt to disguise electrical leads and outlets with nursery furniture your toddler doesn't use, like changing tables. The next most important item is your child's cot since this is the place they will initially spend most of their time in those early months. Cots are also one of the primary causes of infant harm and fatalities so it is essential to ensure your cot abides by the appropriate safety regulations. The cot must be deep enough so your baby is unable to climb out. Check that the spacing between the rails is not capable of permitting the baby to trap their head. Check that if the cot ha...

Rope Lighting:Not Just for the Holidays Anymore!
2008-03-10 16:09:00
My husband recently stumbled upon the mother of all clearance sales - half price on rope lighting at the local Walmart! I can't help but wonder how many little old ladies he took out with the shopping cart... I've had him in "Clearance Therapy" but to tell you the truth I haven't seen much improvement. He hit the front door with a plan for his 100 feet of rope light and by the end of the day I must say I was impressed. I found that 18 feet of rope light screwed up under the bottom edge of my platform bed made a nice nightlight and gave a certain ambiance to the room...after my husband finally got all the tiny screws in place and the cursing stopped because of the awkward position he had to be in while installing the lights...This would probably be better accomplished with an angle drill and possibly a trained monkey or a smaller member of the household doing the work due to it being hard for a big guy to get under the edge of the bed. By the way, you cannot see the rope itself, o...

Green Living Through LED Home Lighting
2008-03-10 16:07:00
More and more home, apartment and office owners are looking for ways to go green. The benefits not only improve the quality of our environment, but they also make for significant tax deductions at the end of the year. As energy efficiency is becoming more prevalent in household lighting and home lighting design is becoming more popular, it is no surprise that LED lights are coming to the forefront as a leading choice for illumination. We are all familiar with the traditional incandescent light bulb. These bulbs are filled with a gas and then a filament is stretched across the inside. When electricity is run across the filament, it heats up to often very high temperatures. The bulb's glow is a result of the filament heating up. The heat is a result of wasted energy. Incandescent bulbs also suffer from inherent fragility. These lights weaken over time as the heat separates atoms from the whole and causes thin spots in the filament. Eventually these thin spots will break and you will ...

Choosing a Cable Lighting System
2008-03-10 16:06:00
There are several different choices available when it comes to a cable lighting system, which is why they are a much more popular form of lighting now than they were previously. One reason for their popularity is the fact that the parallel cables are practically invisible which therefore gives the impression that the lights are actually floating in space. A cable lighting system is excellent in a room with a high ceiling or a large loft. These particular cables are installed at any height in the room and the supports are then turned to light the areas that are difficult to light. Before you purchase this style of lighting, it is important to know what area in your home you plan to light and what the alternatives to a cable lighting system are. In addition, will you be doing the installation or will you be hiring an electrician or a contractor to do the work. If you are doing the work yourself then you should know what some of the key components of the lights are. The main wire used ...
