Jesus Christ Superstar Reprised in Playa del Carmen!
2011-04-11 16:25:00 A funny thing happened to Rob and me seven years ago during one of our scouting trips to Mexico in the year before we made the move to Playa del Carmen . In April of 2004, we came to Playa, just the two of us, to shop for and hopefully purchase the land on which we would build our condos. One evening, after a long day with our agent, we wandered down 5th Ave. to the zocalo and found a nice quiet restaurant overlooking the square and down to the beach. There seemed to be quite a bit of activity in the park, lots of people setting up for an event of some sort. We saw curtains and scaffolding and lights and thought that perhaps a band would be playing that evening. We took a table on the street, a location that turned out to be house left seating for a community production of Jesucristo Superestrella. I couldn't believe it. Here we were, on the shores of the Mexican Caribbean watching what turned out to be a very good production of Jesus Christ Superstar ! It was a magical evening an... More About: Jesus Christ

Top 10 Things I Worry About in Playa del Carmen
2011-03-07 17:28:00 My friend Susie Albin-Najera recently wrote a very nice article for her website The Mexico Report that got me thinking. In her piece, "What You Should Really Worry About When Visiting Mexico", Susie recounts a few of the "hidden dangers" that one might encounter while visiting Mexico. As an expat living and working in Playa del Carmen , I too have my own concerns which I feel compelled to share with "Life's a Beach" readers. These are the Top 10 Things I Worry About in Playa del Carmen. 1. I worry that the guys at DAC will forget and put sugar in my morning smoothie instead of honey.2. I worry that one day Senor Luis, will change the location of his empanada cart and I won't be able to find him.3. I worry that at times, I can no longer find the English word for "aguacate". 4. I worry that if I sleep in on a Sunday, Carnitas Teresita will be out of "castacan". 5. I worry that I'm spending ...
Too Many Goodbyes
2011-03-02 18:03:00 "So, what is the downside of living in Playa?" This is a question I seem to be answering a lot lately as more and more people are contacting me, considering moving their families to Playa del Carmen. Sure, we all post pretty pictures of sunny beaches and smiling children but is the reality really just that sweet and simple. The truth is, life in Playa del Carmen can be pretty darn frustrating. Some of the challenges are obvious: Adjusting to a different culture, learning a different language, making new friends, finding suitable schooling for your children...not to mention trying to make a living! All of these daily obstacles must be embraced and overcome is one is to lead a successful and happy life here. All of these things can be anticipated in advance and approached in a very logical manner.Other challenges are not so obvious. They creep up on you and wear away at your resolve, making tiny chinks in your emotional armor. One that I struggle with the most and have writt...

Have you discovered The Little Mexican Cooking School?
2011-02-28 23:30:00 Headed to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico? Then Puerto Morelos, midway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, is worth a stop. One of this region’s best kept secrets with its world class snorkeling and a LIVE music nightlife to envy, has a new claim to fame that is putting Puerto Morelos on the map. A map that some visitors to Cancun may not discover. The Little Mexican Cooking School has been awarded the designation of #1 Attraction on the entire Yucatan Peninsula by popular travel website TripAdvisor.com, topping the charts of over 600 attractions offered in this area. But, some visitors to the Cancun area won’t find out. That’s because, oddly, the destination is unable to be listed on Trip Advisor's Cancun listings page. There’s something about the geographical delineation between Cancun and it’s ‘next door’ neighbor, Puerto Morelos. For those in the know, The Little Mexican Cooking School offers a one day, in-depth introduction ...
Guadalajara Day 2 - Enarte and Tlaquepaque
2011-02-12 15:47:00 Today we got up bright and early, enjoyed the fabulous breakfast buffet at the hotel and caught a cab for Tlaquepaque. Everyone, and I mean everyone, told us that we absolutely must see this charming town. Everyone was right! It was quaint and picturesque and a shopper's heaven! Although the village has been absorbed geographically by the city of Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque has managed to maintain its own character amidst the urban sprawl. The delightful zocalo and cobblestone streets attract millions of visitors a year who come to shop and Guadalajara locals who come to stroll, relax and dine with their families. Our plan for the day was to attend the Enarte Decorative Arts Expo, cleverly scheduled to coincide with the International Furniture Expo and ensuring the best possible attendance for the artists and craftsmen participating. We were pleased to see that there were plenty of buyers taking cards and placing orders for their shops and online stores. We were there for purely sel...
Guadalajara Day 1 - International Furniture Expo
2011-02-11 15:46:00 Today was the first day of the big furniture show at the Guadalajara Expo , a twice annual event bringing furniture manufacturers and distributors from all over Mexico and the world. This is an enormous and very well organized show that apparently draws thousands of buyers every year. I can't be sure whether it is a reflection of the economy of the backlash from the unusual violent attacks that occurred in and around the city just last week, but the show was practically empty. The exhibitors were out in full force but the buyers were scarce. There were a few independents like us and a few groups of 'suits' obviously there representing large hotel chains but really, it was pretty quiet. Considering the cost to rent the space, the expense to set up these mobile showrooms and the shipping, I felt very badly for all the exhibitors this year. Great for us as we had the place practically to ourselves and the rapt attention of every rep, but terrible for their companies. I ... More About: International , Furniture

Guadalajara Trip 2011
2011-02-09 06:56:00 "What are those Kookie Kinnons up to this time?" you might ask! This week, we are in the beautiful city of Guadalajara, capital of the state of Jalisco for a big furniture expo. Our flight was packed but otherwise fine. We flew with Volaris. Two words: FREE BOOZE. That's right, while all of the majors are cutting back and adding fees, Volaris is handing out Cuba Libres like they're tic tacs. We did not partake on this flight but it was certainly there for the partaking...free of charge! We arrived late in the evening which was fortuitous as the traffic from the airport to centro is reported to be maddening during the daytime work hours. I was seated next to a lovely young lady who was on he way home after a brief vacation with her father in Cancun. She gave me some great tips on things to do and see and warned me to build in plenty of travel time when getting to and fro to our meetings.I will heed her advice and plan ahead. After checking in to Hotel Morales, we po... More About: Trip

Travels in the Yucatan - More Merida Real Estate Adventures
2011-01-16 05:48:00 After resting up from our long but fun day in Tizimin, we jumped right back into real estate recon mode on Monday morning. Having considerably narrowed down not only our selected neighborhoods but also the physical characteristics of the properties we wanted to view, the showings were far more productive. Rob went to meet with the owner of a lovely boutique hotel for sale, completely renovated, fully occupied, very well reviewed on TripAdvisor and priced well below comparable properties that we had seen listed. This was more for our investors than ourselves but certainly gave one a good vision of just how much is possible in some of these raw spaces. In the right property, a good sense of style and a little elbow grease can be rewarded with amazing results. (Sorry no pics of this one. It's a secret) After an early lunch at the Gran Hotel we continued on and visited several single family homes and a recently retired hostel and finished up our day wit... Travels in the Yucatan - Tizimin and the Feria de Caballos
2011-01-13 14:59:00 In addition to visiting the Merida Zoo, we had a special day trip planned for the kids, a road trip to the village of Tizimin to see the Feria de Caballos (horse fair) during the Festival de los Reyes, one of the 5 largest annual festivals in Mexico. Birdie's trainer, Paco, had mentioned the fair to me a few weeks back, thinking it might be fun for all of us to see now that we were reentering the horse world. Tizimin is located north of Valladolid but even though we were traveling back west from Merida, the trip turns out to be about equidistant (time-wise) from Playa del Carmen. Taking the road that runs parallel and to the north of the Cancun-Merida cuota was fast and easy and only took us about 1.5 hours. Once in the town of Tizimin, finding the fairgrounds was not difficult. There was a LONG line of cars all headed (at a snail's pace) in the same direction and hundreds of buses bringing visitors from across the country. It is fair to say the town was filled to capacity!O... More About: Travels , Yucatan
Travels in the Yucatan - Parque Centenario and the Zoo
2011-01-11 22:01:00 Six years ago, the first time we visited the Merida Zoo, the kids were not much more than babies. We were in the city doing some exploring and celebrating Cole's 2nd birthday so a trip to the zoo seemed like the perfect way to spend the afternoon. It turned out to be the perfect time for both little one's to spike a fever and come down with some sort of horrible virus that landed us in our hotel room for a few days. Two words: diarrhea and tights. Not a good combination especially in a public restroom at a playground. This visit was entirely more pleasant with two happy healthy children set loose in acres of fun! The Parque Centenario is free and open to the public 7 days a week. Within the perimeter of the park you will find a small but well kept zoo, a sizable playground, gardens and walking paths and a variety of vendors peddling everything from palomitas to pony rides. First on the list were the bumper boats, always big fun. Who doesn't like a stinky hot boat motor pe... More About: Travels , Yucatan

A New Season and a New Chef for The Little Mexican Cooking School
2010-09-20 15:00:00 In Puerto Morelos, the little colonial gem midway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, activities are afoot to prepare for the beginning of tourist season. Like many other businesses, The Little Mexican Cooking School , a fairly new feature on the Riviera Maya landscape, is no exception. Re-opening it’s doors in October after summer hiatus, the school launches their second season of “Food Adventures for Curious Travelers” on October 5th. After putting over 500 tourist-students through their school last season, and being rated by TripAdvisor as #1 Excursion in the region, The Little Mexican Cooking School is committed to stand by it’s mission: to offer Authentic Mexican Cooking classes to curious travelers, in an intimate setting and to exceed expectations. There are new things brewing for the new season, of course, a new Chef , some new recipes and new products in their store. But first… HOW IT STARTED: Oddly, the partners of such a successful ve... Special Tasting Menu Features the New Flavors of Chef John Gray!
2010-09-13 22:10:00 Last weekend, Rob and I were invited to a special evening hosted by Chef and friend, John Gray, at his flagship restaurant in Puerto Morelos. A "degustacion" menu had been planned and we were to be amongst the first to try some of his newest culinary creations. We arrived in time for the 7pm seating and quickly realized we would essentially have the restaurant to ourselves. September is notoriously slow on the Riviera Maya and we would be joined throughout the course of the evening by only a dozen or so fellow diners. We decided to sit front and center at the bar where we could easily see into the kitchen which was abuzz with activity. We were presented with the plan for the evening, a series of courses scrawled in black marker on a sheet of plain white printer paper. We were immediately intrigued. The culinary journey that followed would amuse and sometimes confuse our senses and, in the end, leave us well satisfied but wanting more! Dirty Martinis to start the evening of... Lunch on the Beach at Lol Ha in Akumal
2010-09-13 03:48:00 This weekend, we decided a quiet beach day was in order so, on Saturday, we piled everyone in the truck and headed 30 minutes south to our favorite spot in Akumal. Depending on our destination of choice, I sometimes pack a cooler for these impromptu beach days. This day, we were craving some really good food and we knew just where to find it. In the past decade, options for good beach eats have really taken off. But, when we first arrived in Playa del Carmen, finding a really good meal with a really good view often meant a day trip to Akumal. Years ago, Lol Ha Restaurant was one of the few places you could go and enjoy consistently great food on the beach. Despite the addition of new (and admittedly more convenient) Playa beach eateries such as Wicky's, Indigo Beach , Canibal Royale and Kool Beach Club, Lol Ha has still remained one of our very favorites. The menu features a nice selection of homemade soups, fresh salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and a variety of grill items. With ... More About: Lunch
Papalote Students Visit Crococun
2010-09-11 18:47:00 Unbelievably, somehow, I have managed to spend six years in Playa del Carmen with small children and NEVER managed to visit Crococun. So, when the 1st grade class at El Papalote School solicited chaperones for a field trip to the small eco-zoo and reptile farm, I jumped at the chance. Frankly, I think I was more excited than Cole. So, last week, we piled the students into cars and made the trip 30 minutes north to Puerto Morelos. Unlike my husband, who has an aversion to all things that crawl on their bellies, I happen to really dig snakes and the like and want my kids to develop a healthy appreciation for them as well. As we are planning to build in the jungle, they are going to need to be able to identify both friend and foe and this gave us all a good chance to take a look at some of the indigenous species that will likely cross our paths. The residents of the zoo are almost entirely creatures that are found in this area of Mexico. Some were quite familiar to us, like the coatimu... More About: Students
