After hearing from friends and fellow foodies that a new cooking school was opening up in Playa, I knew I would have to try it out.Co.Cos' owner/founder Coty Villarreal is an accomplished Chef and student of the world. After traveling extensively though Europe and Asia, including an extended stay in Thailand, she brought her collected knowledge back to her home country, Mexico, armed with a passion to share her experiences with like-minded home cooks. It is this passion and Coty's effervescent personality that is the heart and soul of Co.Co's Cocina Cosmopolita and what makes the learning experience unique. This is actually my third visit to Coty's cooking school. Top 10 Take-Aways from the Social Media Boot Camp
2011-10-10 13:00:00 "Accomplished: A room full of people who are passionate about tourism and social media." So tweeted Arianna Bañuelos from her @AryCancun twitter account at the close of the first ever Social Media Boot Camp for Riviera Maya Tourism. Looking around the room, I see people putting the finishing touches on their notes, asking questions, exchanging email address and twitter handles. Each one of them looks tired but happy. I have come away with a notebook full of information, cemented some friendships and made new relationships with smart motivated people working in this region. We all represent different industries and interests but each of shares the desire to promote Riviera Maya as a destination and increase commerce within the region. We also seem to share a passion for learning and a willingness to share our collective knowledge and experiences. Without giving away the farm, here are my personal Top 10 Takeaways from Kay Walten's Social Media Boot ...
Kay Walten's Social Media Boot Camp for Riviera Maya Tourism!
2011-10-09 00:35:00 Wow. Just wow! I knew I was going to come away with some good info when I registered for Kay Walten's Social Media Boot Camp for Tourism but after reviewing more than 10 pages of notes I am seriously appreciating the value of the information she is sharing with us. For those of you who don't know her, Kay Walten and her husband Gary came to the Riviera Maya way back in the late 1980's, when the area of pristine beaches and jungle south of Cancun was referred to, unceremoniously, as the Cancun-Tulum corridor. It's a good thing some bright DMO (Destination Marketing Organization) came up with a more elegant name, dubbing it the Riviera Maya and hereafter making our marketing efforts infinitely easier. Gary and Kay began their life in this new, virtually undiscovered area leading tours of cave divers through the mystical cenotes that are now so famous in this region. To supplement their income and to provide added value to their guests, they began offering vacation rent...
Keeping Fruits and Veggies Fresh Without Plastics!
2011-10-07 18:50:00 One of the great things about living in Playa del Carmen is that we have access to great fresh fruits and veggies year round. Some, the staples like onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and limes, to name just a few, are remarkably inexpensive. Others, the more exotic treats that are shipped in from the US and Canada, can get pretty pricey and may only appear for a few days at a time in DAC, Chedraui or Soriana. If you are going to spend good money on fresh produce you want to eliminate as much waste as possible, right? What is the best way to keep our fruits and veggies crisp and delicious in a climate that turns bananas brown before I can get them home from the store? We are fortunate enough to live in a region of Mexico where electricity and refrigeration is plentiful (albeit expensive) and for many produce items that is the best option. Others require a cool (but not refrigerated) dark space to rest until they are consumed. That I find to be challenging here in the tropics of the R... More About: Fruits , Fresh

Agua de Pepino con Ginebre
2011-07-25 18:08:00 Surprise, surprise. It is summer in Playa del Carmen and it's hot. According to the status updates in my Facebook news feed, it is not as hot as the summer our friends and family are experiencing in the northeastern United States, so I will try not to minge and complain too much. After 7 years living on the Riviera Maya, we have actually become quite acclimated to hot and sticky weather and have a wide variety of coping techniques to get through the occasional scorcher. Because we are all out working, playing and exercising in the heat, staying hydrated is always a top priority. We have made huge strides over the past year to focus on our health and and quality of life and so, I do my best to avoid "sports drinks" and powdered drink mixes whenever possible. At home, I have been experimenting with different "agua de frutas" (literally translated as fruit waters) to keep our thirsts quenched. "Agua de frutas" or "agua de sabores" can b...
Pony Camp in Playa del Carmen!
2011-07-05 14:00:00 Monday morning, my kids jumped feet first into their summer vacation, arriving bright and early at the barn for the first day of Pony Camp . Trainer and club owner Paco Magellon has been running this camp during the school vacations and it is something all the young riders in Playa del Carmen look forward to. Paco is so terrific with the kids and he has passed this special gift along to his son Diego who will be assisting him during this summer session. Monday is a day off for the horses so this morning the group learned how to groom a horse from nose to tail. "Brisa" was a patient subject, standing quietly while each of the children took a turn currying, brushing and picking hooves. The kids started to learn a bit about the anatomy of the horse and how to care for these majestic beasts. Later on in the day, as the temperature soared, they all cooled off in the cenote! So far, it's a nice mix of Hipico Playa del Carmen students and a few new children j...

Summer Camp Programs Playa del Carmen 2011
2011-06-22 14:11:00 On the Riviera Maya, summer is now upon us and summer vacation is just around the corner. For many families, the school break means travel! Many will take this time to travel to see their families scattered across Mexico. Others will depart for cooler climates in the US, Europe and Canada. For those staying put, the challenge is always "What to do with the children?". When school is out and most of the extracurricular activities have been suspended for the summer months there is a huge gap to be filled in the daily lives of our young ones. Many families, especially those with two working parents, will be looking for fun summer programs to fill the time for their restless nin@s. Fortunately, there are some nice options for children of all ages to keep them active and occupied until classes start up again at the end of August. These are a few of the programs and summer camps that we have found for kids living in Playa del Carmen and all across the Mayan Riviera. Whet... More About: Summer , Programs , Camp
Help Your Dog Beat the Heat!
2011-06-18 13:00:00 Special thanks to my good friend Tacogirl and the SAGA Humane Society of San Pedro Belize for allowing me to reprint this article which addresses an important seasonal issue for pet owners both in San Pedro and Playa del Carmen alike. The original article can found here on the Tacogirl Belize Blog. There aren’t many things that everyone in San Pedro agrees about, but no one would argue with you when you say ‘It’s hot!’. It has been very warm the past couple of months and it looks like we may be in for a long and very hot summer. While we seek out the shade and drink ice cold drinks to cool us down, we need to remember that our furry friends feel the heat just like we do. The only difference is that they depend on us to provide them with shade and fresh, cool water. Recently, a family in San Pedro suffered the tragic loss of their much loved dog. Why? Because they didn’t realize that dogs can suffer terribly in the heat. Their loyal pet foll... More About: Heat

Filharmonia at Xcaret - Amazing!
2011-06-10 19:16:00 Sometime in the Fall, Papalote parents were asked if their children would like to participate in a performance that was to take place sometime near the end of the 2010-2011 school year. There were to be required in-school rehearsals and books to buy and uniforms to order and little or no information about exactly what kind of event we could expect. The children would be learning some songs on the Flauta Escolar (that's a recorder to you and me) which, like all good Waldorf children, they become quite proficient with at a young age. Frankly, the prospect of MORE recorder practice in my house filled me with dread, but as Cole and his pals seemed keen to do it, I signed him up and paid for the music book. Having lived here for almost 7 years now, I secretly wondered if this "performance", would ever actually take place. I've seen lots of these bright shiny ideas take off like a rocket only to fizzle and die out. Events are rarely, if ever, planned a whole year in adva... More About: Amazing

Top 10 Ways to Save the Reef of the Riviera Maya
2011-06-08 22:00:00 The Mesoamerican Reef (MAR) is the largest barrier reef in the Atlantic and stretches over 1000 km from the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula down to the Bay Islands of Honduras. This reef is the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest barrier reef in the world. The Mesoamerican reef serves two important functions. It provides a habitat for a vast array of marine life that rely on the coral for food and shelter. It also functions as a natural barrier to protect the coastline from the damaging effects of storms and coastal erosion. The Mesoamerican reef system supports nearly 60 varieties of coral, 350 mollusks, and 500 species of fish. There are numerous endangered or protected species that live in or around the reef system. These include the magnificent sea turtles that call the shores and bays of the Riviera Maya home and the Whale Sharks that migrate yearly to the waters surrounding Holbox and Isla Contoy. Today, the Mesoamerican Reef faces a wide ... More About: Save
A Visit to the School Garden at Ak Lu'um Waldorf School
2011-06-02 15:29:00 The teachers and students at Ak Lu'um Waldorf School in Playa del Carmen have been working hard on their bio-dynamic garden beds and are starting to see the fruits of their labors. The heirloom tomatoes are ripening on the vines and the peppers and squash plants are covered with blossoms that will soon transform into bright colorful vegetables. We have been bone dry for two months and the recent rains have been a godsend to all things green. The sudden rise in moisture in the soil has caused some splitting in the thinner skinned tomatoes but other than that, the plants are thriving. You can almost hear them saying "thank you!". (That's a little anthroposophic humor for you Waldorf folks). The papaya and banana trees that surround the school are all reaching for the sun and laden with fruit. The garden beds are all raised, a necessary design choice when trying to cultivate anything in this region as chiseling holes into th... More About: Garden

May Day Celebration at Ak Lu'um School
2011-05-09 02:37:00 May Day is celebrated in countries all over the world in festivals that draw their origins in the ancient pre-Christian fertility rites practiced by the Romans honoring the Spring Goddess, Flora. The elements of the modern May Day festival take their root in Medieval times and include music, games, parades, dancing and of course, the ubiquitous maypole. Traditionally festooned with bright Spring flowers and strung with colorful ribbons, participants each take a ribbon and in a choreographed pattern weave them around and down as they dance or skip around the pole. This year, the students at Ak Lu'um Waldorf School erected their own maypole to celebrate May Day in Mexico. The children were all dressed in white, the girls wearing crowns of flowers, the boys colorful sashes. As their teachers sang and played simple traditional tunes, the children skipped in and out creating a hypnotic pattern as the ribbons wove their way down the pole. The Maypole Dance was a yearly tradition at m... More About: Celebration
Wastewater Garden Specialist Needed in Belize!
2011-05-06 05:17:00 As many "Life's a Beach" readers well know, Rob and I have spent a fair amount of time in Belize. We have explored a vast majority of the mainland and have great pals on Ambergris Caye who we keep in touch with and visit faithfully once or twice a year. On one of my first visits to the island, I reached out and made plans to meet Laurie Norton, better known in the blog-o-sphere as "Tacogirl". We have similar interests and hit it off immediately. During that visit, Laurie brought me to visit Holy Cross Anglican School located north of San Pedro in an area known as San Mateo. Words are really not sufficient to describe the level of poverty in San Mateo. You really need to see it, smell it, walk across the makeshift bridges elevated just inches over a swamp of sewage and waste to take it all in properly. A few years back, I wrote an article for Blog Action Day highlighting the plight of the residents of this "neighborhood". It will give you a good over... More About: Garden
