No Slowdown in December > Toronto Market Stil l Hot The Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) announced yesterday the Resale Housing Sales figures for December 2006 grew by 4% over same month sales in December 2005. This helped bring the 2006 year end results to within 1.2% of the record setting 2005 Sales Year. According to TREB president Dorothy Mason, December’s results shows consumer confidence in the Toronto Housing market is still very strong. ?All year long the market has remained very stable,? Mrs. Mason said. ?December?s strong showing gives consumers even more confidence that there is a solid foundation in place as we begin the new year.? Bank rates unchanged - Jan 16 2007 The Bank of Canada announced today it will keep its overnight lending rate unchanged at 4.25%. The overnight rate is the key lending rate for the central bank and affects a broad range of sectors in the national economy. In Real Estate terms, the key rate announcement is generally proceeded by either a decrease or increase (if not a continuation) of mortgage rates offered by the leading financial institutions and banks. This latest announcement ensures that, at least for the short term, mortgage rates will stay relative and no increase is foreseen. According to the Bank of Canada, 2006 has seen inflation fall within expected parameters and forecasts for 2007 show an economic increase of about 2.5% for the first half of the year. ?There are signs that a significant amount of the adjustment in the U.S. housing and automotive sectors has already taken place and that the inventory correction in Canada is well advanced.? Major market home prices will continue to rise in 2007 Canada ’s housing market continues to soar, as sales near record-breaking levels and home prices soar in markets throughout the country. In 2006, sales of existing homes in major markets reached the second highest annual level on record, according to statistics released by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). Annual MLS® sales in Canada ’s major markets totaled 336,271 units in 2006, just 242 fewer than the record set in 2005. On the local level, a number of Canada ’s major markets set new annual sales records in 2006, including Calgary , Edmonton , Saskatoon , Winnipeg , Sudbury , and Ottawa .
