HGTV Design Star Kitchen Revisited
2009-09-13 17:39:00 The kitchen episode of the 2009 HGTV Design Star was so revealing and the design work so yeesh(!) (I take NO pleasure in this criticism) that I could not let it go after my previous post on this episode. A busy summer allowed my angst to go on hold for awhile, but tonight's Design Star finale put the pressure on me to share more insight on kitchen design issues from that episode! My good friend and colleague, Kelly Morisseau of Kitchen _Sync and I have teamed up to deliver the insight. Kelly took the warm modern kitchen, and I took the Moroccan/Italian-fusion-ridiculousness kitchen. I've been to Morocco, I love Morocco, but Moroccan/Italian fusion? Kelly and I are each equally comfortable with modern and traditional design. Together, we have decided to show our readers that great things can be done with stock cabinets. You just need creativity. Kelly understands this and has worked HER magic to design a better version, in many ways, of the warm modern theme, the second kitchen...
Kitchen Design - Advice From Allied Professionals
2009-08-09 23:45:00 Cathy sent me an email and asked if I thought there was a design flaw in a section of her cabinet design. I had to write back that, yes, I agreed with her that part of the design was flawed. Unfortunately, it was a finished picture of the kitchen that Cathy had sent me, which made it even more uncomfortable for me to give my opinion. The kitchen was installed, and it looked like it cost a pretty penny. Here are words from Cathy: "Lesson Learned I learned a big lesson the hard way and wish I had gone with my instinct to hire a kitchen designer during my kitchen design process. My contractor convinced me that it would make more sense for him to design the kitchen layout because he was also working on the electrical, plumbing etc. so there would be a cost savings to me if he designed it and worked with his preferred cabinet company. We decided to go ahead and in the end I thought the kitchen looked great until I noticed some design elements that look flawed to me. I believ... Julie and Julia - Kitchen Thoughts
2009-08-07 14:55:00 Marcy Goldman is a new friend. I met Marcy some time ago, and we just seem to hit it off really well. I respect Marcy's hard work and experience as a talented baker and chef. I wanted to celebrate the movie Julie and Julia , and while I'm sure I will have more to say about Julia Child's kitchen, I want to start off with this very wonderful and interesting piece, written by my new friend Marcy. Marcy Goldman is a cookbook author and master baker, and the creator of BetterBaking.com. She is an occasional baking guest on Martha Stewart Sirius and this fall has two new cookbooks coming out, as well as the current A Passion for Baking, Oxmoor House 2007. Follow Marcy on Twitter. Marcy's newest cookbooks, A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking, and The New Best of Betterbaking.com, both Whitecap Books, will be available September 2009. Blue Star is sort of a lone wolf (no pun intended) in the pro range category. A somewhat silent player, it's a product that deserves more attention. Blue Star says that they are the only genuine restaurant range for the home due to their open burner system, producing 22,000 btus of power, resulting in shorter cooking times and an even simmer. The Next Food Network Star
2009-08-03 14:45:00 I love how these things happen. Yesterday, the tv was on in the background in the kitchen, and, while I'm not a frequent Food Network viewer by any means, my son and his girlfriend are big fans. They had been here for the weekend and we were just hanging out in the kitchen. I switched the channel to the Food Network and my son's favorite chef, Bobby Flay, was on. Yesterday was the recap of the previous episodes of The Next Food Network Star , with the winner to be announced last night. Eventually, my son and his girlfriend left to return to their home (ok, mine, where they're living in NYC, lucky kids) and I found myself, now in my office, keeping the Food Network channel on for the rest of the day, up to the final show, and getting more and more into the series in the process! Throughout the day, the series took me from kitchen to office to bedroom (I know, it's a sad state of affairs when I have to admit the Food Network channel was yesterday's entertainment ALL DA... Pottery Barn Lighting
2009-07-31 19:46:00 I just saw this new fixture from Pottery Barn . It is showcased in their newsletter that I received. At first glance I really didn't care for it. Too...something. Contrived? Uninspired? Too much like other lighting fixtures that incorporate common objects like silverware or glasses, etc. etc? Twenty seconds later, I think I like it. While I don't think I'd buy it, it's the sculptural quality of it that's speaking to me now. I think I'm over my initial cynical thoughts. I do like the use of two fixtures over a table, although these should be set further apart. Could be great for a kitchen dining area/breakfast room too. What do you think? 1) Like it or 2) hate it or 3) a New Yorker's "eh" (with a smirk and a right tilt of the head-stop, let's not forget the half closed eyes)? More About: Lighting

HGTV Design Star Kitchen Episode
2009-07-27 13:22:00 I will admit to only having seen HGTV's Design Star maybe once or twice before, a year or two ago. Somehow, my consciousness was raised about it this past week (good work HGTV) and I thought it would be interesting to view the kitchen episode, which aired last night. Of course, I'm going to look at this with a critical eye, how could I not? Because I have not seen this season before last night, I do not know everyone's names, all their dynamics, abilities, and so on. In any case, it's the end result that matters. So, here are my impressions. Whether or not you watch the show, you can learn from this episode, so keep reading. When people go on game shows, I've heard that they brush up on facts, details, and so on. Is designing a kitchen something that these designers could have predicted they might have to tackle during the course of this season? If so, I'd assume that the designers would have spent an hour or two studying kitchen images to pick up creative ideas, t... More About: Kitchen , Episode , Kitchen Design
House Beautiful Kitchen Of The Year 2009
2009-07-21 17:16:00 Now I know why someone associated with House Beautiful yesterday said to me "We love bloggers!" This post will have taken me about 6 hours to produce by the time I'm finished. Why? It's the images! I'm not even going to tell you how how many I took...but maybe I'm the worst editor, or maybe there are just WAY too many inspiring vignettes in this beauitful kitchen/living space. In either case, maybe I was a little obsessive. That's ok, I surrender to it and you benefit. Ok, let's talk about the kitchen. There's A LOT going on in this kitchen, a lot to talk about. I think I'll be organized about it. Yes, Susan, that's a good concept. OVERALL DESIGN The kitchen design, by Robert Stilin in close collaboration with Ina Garten, was meant to replicate Ina's East Hampton kitchen for House Beautiful's Kitchen Of The Year 2009. The kitchen of the year can be viewed at Rockefeller Center (you can't miss it) until July 24. You're hearing it more and more...the kitchen is the new li...
Viking Range Color - What To Do?
2008-06-06 22:18:00 Here's a question from Maryann:"We are remodeling our kitchen. The look we're going for is whitewashed custom cabinets with chocolate glaze and a large black island. We planned on stainless steel appliances - 42" fridge and 48" viking range. We were considering the 48" white viking range - would that color work in this kitchen or would a white range be better suited in another style kitchen?"Maryann Ma ryann, right off the bat, it sounds to me like you will be dealing with two different whites...a bright white (if that is what you are referring to) for the Viking , and a glazed white cabinet color, which will be somewhere in the ivory/cream family. I'd be very careful when mixing whites. Some whites have a pink cast, some a green, some, a yellow, for example. It is critical that you see the actual Viking color samples alongside of your cabinet color, preferrably in your own home during different times of the day and ... The Post
2008-06-06 21:26:00 The post is gone. It's best to move on. While the world of kitchen remodeling is fraught with anxiety, project difficulties, and communication differences, many of which are helpful to dissect and talk about, sometimes a post needs to have a lifespan. That's the case here. Thanks very much for all of your positive feedback. It was very helpful to have received it, and it's also best to, once again, move into positive territory, so let's do that. Trust me, all is not wonderful and carefree in the remodeling world, so I expect something, somewhere will come up again that I will want to discuss. I'll look forward to your input again at that time. Warm regards, Susan More About: Project Management , Post
I'm (Kitchen) Floored!! (Again!)
2008-06-05 19:47:00 Had you there for a minute! I've talked lots about the lightness in Scandinavian kitchens. Light tones are seen in many kitchen materials such as walls, cabinets, countertops, backsplashes and so on. But, I think what is, really, a very cool look, and one that is very UNcommon here in the U.S. are super light floors as are often seen in Scandinavian kitchens. There is SOMETHING about a light floor, and I'm not even sure I can express what it is, but I'll try. I think light toned floors contribute a number of interesting attributes to a kitchen design:The space appears larger than it really is. If the walls are light as well as the floors, the space seems to float, almost suspended, and there is a flow to the space that, in all light tones, almost defies description. If the large elements such as cabinetry, are dark, the expected contrast is reversed and is a very cool look. The space looks clean! One may want to choose an imperfect light floor, so the inevitable nicks and spo... More About: Kitchen , Kitchen Design
Beware of laptops in the night
2008-06-01 18:02:00 I'm really connected. Probably a bit too much at times. You'll see why soon. I have my iphone which handles my email when I'm away from the office, and my laptop in the bedroom on the night table. It's my routine to ease into the night with my laptop. Call it recreational time on the computer (mostly) and then, much later, an aid to avoid "trying" to get back to sleep. Then, there is my work schedule. It is full time during the day and as desired in the off hours, which ends up being when quite a bit of work gets done, truth be told, and communication with clients is also done during off hours, holidays and weekends (as I choose,)Last night I woke up around 2 am, which happens quite frequently, I reached over to the laptop to check my email (as I'm far from the only one writing messages in the night) and I see an email from my client Marty (Denise and Marty) telling me that I did great design work for them over the last 1 1/2 years on various parts of their new home, b... I'm back
2008-05-31 01:44:00 The days just go! I'm not quite sure where they go, but I know they pass by so fast. I've been wall-to-wall busy, first and foremost with my clients. I may have said it before...it's the perfect storm, something I could not have predicted. Projects, highly detailed, large, all needing to be ordered at once, all having come on board at different times, nearly all which should have been finished a long time ago, at different times from one another, except for architectural or construction delays. Or both. I swear, every project gets a life of its own! Will my clients be patient with me as I have been with them? I think they will. I'm in the middle of all the detail right now. But, here's my philosophy. The day before Thanksgiving, I sometimes don't go food shopping till 3 pm or so (now THAT'S professional procrastination, although procrastination is not the issue), AND, I make everything from scratch, and I'm not kidding. When I come home and start preparing the food, I th... More About: Back
Beautiful Kitchen - Remodel Magazine
2008-05-14 00:21:00 I received a copy of Remodel magazine in the mail today, a Better Homes & Gardens Special Interest Publication. I'm definitely psychic, that's a fact, but I never know why I'm getting these thoughts! It's been forever since this project of mine was shot by BH&G. A long time has passed. The funny thing is, they were in such a rush to shoot it. Maybe they shot it a year and a half ago? Anyway, what do you know, just yesterday I wondered, where is this feature?? It was already in the mail to me, and it had been months and months since I last thought of it. This was a crazy project. The problems just kept coming, one after another. It's a very old house and the house just did what it wanted to do, end of story. So, I was left to figure out the ceiling due to various beams not willing to move, but they had to relate to the different kitchen sections. It worked out very well, I think, although you can't appreciate it very much in the shots. I think it's simple, yet elegant. Gena... More About: Magazine , Kitchen , Beautiful
KBIS Kitchen Trends 2008
2008-05-11 16:23:00 Oh, it occurred to me that I took images of all these kitchens at KBIS to show you! I think you will see a good deal of modern design as well as dark, rich, browns. You'll also see a common thread of lights, such as creams, and browns, combined. I thought that was interesting. I did not see the same amount of black cabinetry that I did last year, although it is still seen. I was able to get some very good shots without people in them, and, short of a few shots that are, well, cockeyed, my new camera did an excellent job! The Idea Center kitchens by Meredith, will be up soon. Enjoy it! And, Happy Mother's Day!KBIS Kitchen Slideshow More About: Trends , 2008
Kitchen Miscellanea
2008-05-09 02:29:00 You know, it's funny. All of a sudden, I discovered a pattern in my thinking. Day after day, in the midst of a very busy period for me, I'm thinking, hmmmmm, maybe I should just show you some gorgeous Scandinavian kitchens from my recent magazines. No, not that, I'll blog about this problem I'm having on a job. No, I'll blog about new products, or this or that, or whatever, and each time, it causes me to delay a little longer. I seem to be experiencing a "no, not that" sort of feeling. I think I have so much I want to say and not enough time to say it all!So, let me refocus! One thing I know I've really wanted to do is to take you to some favorite blogs. Electrolux is Cooking Up Some Philanthropy
2008-05-04 19:05:00 Have you seen those new commercials with the young and beautiful Kelly Ripa buzzing around her kitchen, appeasing wee ones and preparing for adult guests while cooking on a new state-of-the-art-stove? Ripa is the mother of three small children, the Star of Regis and Kelly and a Soap Opera diva. The commercials showcase a glam kitchen with a glam star. However, despite the fact that most women don’t whiz around the kitchen in pumps and full make-up, the commercials resonate with most multi-tasking moms (OK that’s a major oxymoron). The kitchen is central to all homes and good appliances make the job easier and more enjoyable. Electrolux is showcasing the popular star for the launch of their new North American premium kitchen appliance line showcasing appliances with European flair. Ripa is shown cooking on a chic cook top that boils water in 90 seconds! Electrolux offers an energy efficient Induction Hybrid cook top in both 30 and 36 inch models. Induction heating is new a... Another Kitchen Weekend For Me
2008-05-03 00:12:00 And, so this is another weekend of total kitchen immersion for me...lots of work to do!!! And, here I sit, with the music cranked WAY up. For a moment, there, we almost got crazy and booked a flight to the jazzfest, but can you imagine, coming back on Monday, leaving at 11 am (the only flight) and arriving at jfk (an hour from home) after 6 pm for a typical 3 hour flight, if that? Not even I am that crazy! But, turn it on and crank it up, that's what I recommend...JAZZFEST LIVE THIS WEEKEND ON WWOZOh, and if the music cuts in and out...that's sort of how it goes down there, stuff happens, you get what you get (hmmm, sort of like kitchens!) No, I'm kidding, really, no one get nervous now! I'm loving this music, enjoy your weekend! The song now is something about needing eyes behind your head. :) More About: Kitchen , Kitchens , Weekend

2008-05-01 19:32:00 Quartz Produced in the USA Gets A+ Cambria produces the only quartz countertop made in the USA and lives up to their mantra: Live Green, Live Life, Live Cambria. American made quartz equals less of a carbon footprint with regard to transporting the product. “At Cambria, we are committed to environmental responsibility in both our product offerings and businesses practices,” says a Cambria spokesman. They’re not kidding. Their quartz is nonporous which means harsh chemicals are not necessary to seal or polish the surface. Cambria is certified GREENGUARD for children and Schools certified. GREENGUARD is a nonprofit organication that oversees acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products. In addition to their product being green, they run a very green office and plant. Water Filtration - Move Away From the Bottle
2008-04-30 17:46:00 Here is a post from my assistant, Maureen, who is a strong advocate for green living. We'll be hearing from Maureen from time to time. Give her a little welcome too! Good work Maureen!Thirty-Eight years after the inception of Earth Day, it has gone mainstream with events in countries all over the globe. Flooding the Blogosphere, networks and print media, Green has gone global, political and earned a former Vice President a Nobel Peace Price. It also made a strong presence at this year’s KBIS where Green was a hot theme as social consciousness entered the Kitchen Design world in a multitude of ways. Intrinsically, we all want to lessen our environmental footprint – how does a mere mortal go about doing such (especially a SUV driving suburban mom)? Although not a terribly glam topic –we can begin our personal green campaigns in a very tangible and quantitative way. Dance In Your Kitchen!
2008-04-25 22:52:00 Ok, I'm feeling the weekend coming on! We were "this close" to going to New Orleans this weekend for the JazzFest. We've gone 6 times since 1995. We MAY even go for a quick one nighter next weekend. Instead, this weekend, our daughter her husband, and their dog (who's afraid of our cat who gets into the tiger stalking stance at the sight of his rustling tail) are coming out for the weekend. I have declared this weekend, JazzFest weekend on the blog, and we will definitely have the music cranked up ALL WEEKEND, while we are all cooking together, with wine flowing, and as I have it on right now on my computer, as there will be LIVE programming from the Fest! Here's where you go to take part in your own version of dancing in the kitchen while you're cooking this weekend! Go to WWOZ! To me, that's when a kitchen really lives up to its full potential...loved ones, music, wine, good food, pets, what else is there?? Enjoy! More About: Kitchen , Dance
KBIS 2008 - More Pantry Love!
2008-04-24 12:57:00 From KBIS, I have too many fun images of organizational finds for the pantry not to share them with you, so there is more for today. And, if you're like me, I think it's so much fun to discover new ways of organizing (yes, FUN.) Keeps the insides of our cabinets interesting, so that they, oh let's take a stretch here, do their JOB to amuse their pantry masters, right? Not to mention adding efficiency to the mix. KBIS 2008 - In The Pantry!
2008-04-23 22:57:00 I had this post all put together day before yesterday. A couple of days prior I downloaded a beta firefox3 that I read was stable, almost ready to be released (well, June) yadayada. Then, I noticed a very slow internet connection. Did I make the connection between the browser and the slow internet? Not until today when I decided to try explorer to see how that ran. Made an appointment with the ISP and everything for this Saturday! Sheesh! So, we're up and running again, nice and fast. Here we go...Let me tell you, I WORKED that show, KBIS! Ok, so I couldn't stop snapping pictures with my new camera, truth be told, BUT, my intentions were noble...and so many things were so inspiring. So, let's look at what's new for inside our kitchen cabinets and pantries. Here's a cool new mechanism thing to allow your doors to sit at any position and stay there. No worries about snapping up or down or whatever. It's by Hafele, who makes so many useful and modern products for the kitchen.Also... More About: Pantry , 2008
Kitchens - Go Ahead and Vent!
2008-04-21 12:07:00 At KBIS, I took a 1/2 day sort of refresher course on venting. There is not a whole lot new in venting concepts, but, it did reinforce and remind me of the "ick" factor, which I'll explain. Here's what's happening. First, our kitchen floor plans are more OPEN to other rooms. This means that pollutants from cooking have more opportunity to freely move about your home, hanging out in your furnishings, your artwork, your pillows, walls, flooring, you get the idea. Just as an fyi, grease from cooking turns into vapor and floats in the air as particles for as long as 72 hours!ADD TO THAT, the tighter construction of newer homes, which can encourage mold growth and trap pollutants, and your health becomes at risk for allergies, asthma, lung disease, and who knows what else. A very impressive ick factor, yes? AND, if that is not enough, indoor pollution is considered to rank within the top 5 environmental risks to the public, accor... More About: Kitchens , Vent , Ahead

KBIS 2008 - Green Kitchen Products
2008-04-19 15:33:00 This just in...New York Times' Sunday magazine, "The Green Issue" is here: Please take a look and register if you need to, it's worth it.I was all set to blog about green kitchen design theory today, but Maureen, my assistant, took home a bunch of green kitchen information this weekend (on her own, just wanted to read up on it, isn't that great?) and I can't find what I'm looking for. You'll meet Maureen soon, I'm sure. Maureen brings her own container of water to work every day (yes, don't worry, I give her more water if she wants it during the day. No, I DO.) We talk about environmental issues here and there, and Maureen brings a lot of good green living insight into our company. SO, till then, I'll show you some green, or healthy living, products I saw at KBIS. Rohl has a new triflow faucet, which offers hot, cold, and filtered water from a single faucet, offering consumers a healthy alternative and a more green alternative than dr... Draper DBS Sub Zero Booth Kbis 2008
2008-04-18 16:15:00 Quick note...as the weather warms...it's 73 and not even 11 am(!) I like to lighten up the blog...so here is a fresh, crisp, change, along with some small new images just below the main image. It feels like summer already to me!Here is the other Sub Zero booth from the 2008 KBIS show last week, by Bill Draper, of Draper DBS. Bill Draper shares his, always unique, always interesting, vision, creating a mix of materials, a fusion of smoothness, texture, shine, shimmer, waves, and grids in a simple, yet strong, kitchen design. There is movement in this kitchen...it's in the "wave" drawer fronts, the rounded, amazing, Sub Zero pieces, made as one, the "moving" glass features, even the carved artwork of 3 people in slight movement. The colors are clear and warm, and the lines are strong. Bill Draper's designs for Sub Zero always delight the senses. We, in the biz, KNOW it will be something special if Bill Draper is attached to a project. His cabinetry is ...
My Midlife Crisis ... In The Kitchen
More articles from this author:2008-04-17 22:05:00 Not a crisis, it sounds so dramatic, but a period of transition, yes...honestly...as a kitchen designer, that is. I'm no longer so concerned with the kitchen triangle. For the most part, the kitchen triangle is fading away. Why? Because of several things:one's personal work habits taking precedence (a good thing)the introduction of so many different shapes, sizes, and types of appliancesdesigning multiple work stations into a kitchenmulti generations cooking together as fun rather than a taskthe kitchen being even more the hub of the house attracting people like ants to a picnicBut, it's funny, the thing that is really making me totally rethink the kitchen is its role as a social place. We've all read the magazines talking about the kitchen as the "gathering place." We've heard that for years, and there is the island with a few stools, etc. etc. But, my eyes have been opened even further, since last August after having visited the Hansen showroom in Copenhagen an...
