Read also: Google Confirms Dewey Algo Update - Lots of Google Dancing in SERPS What is PageRank? Everyone gets excited about PageRank updates and sometimes I wonder why. Real Estate Blogger of the Month | Lake Norman Realtor | Diane Aurit
2008-04-05 17:18:00
REBlogGirl: So, let's start this out with a little background on you and your blog. How long have you been in the real estate industry? I got my license in 1991 in Pasadena CA and have been a full-time REALTOR every since. I moved to the Lake Norman area of NC in 2005 so basically had to start from scratch in a new community, state and region of the country! REBlogGirl: And when did you start blogging? Where are your various blogs? I am an avid reader of daily real estate news.  When Inman News had a conference call about blogging in March of 2007 I sat in and listened to you and three other panelists and was hooked.  I didn't truly start blogging on a regular basis until last June.  By that time I had set up my own blog: Lake Norman Real Estate (www.BestRealEstateLakeNorman.com) with RSSPieces and started writing and participating daily on ActiveRain.  I am a member of numerous social networking and blogging sites like Digg, MyBlogLog, Technorati, Inman, Fac...

10 Worst Fortune 500 Blogs
2008-04-04 17:13:00
OK, you know I wouldn't have put up the 10 best Fortune 500 blogs if I wasn't willing to put up the 10 worst.  And let me tell you, the following blogs need to turn off the lights and say "Goodnight, John Boy."  When it comes to blogging mistakes, these blogs know how to bang them out- from truly boring content, to lack of expertise of the blogger, to missing blog features, to bad design, to... well, you name it, at least one of these blogs has got it!  So, if you think I've been harsh on real estate blogs, just wait till you see what I have to say about the Big Boy blogs... Check out more Fortune 500 blogs at Search Marketing's Review of Fortune 500 Blogs . Again, a special thanks to Easton Ellsworth for keeping such a great list of corporate bloggers (The Fortune 500 Blog Project.) 1.       Kodak's a Thousand Words Multiple author blog about photography and company products (tutorials) OK, I'll give the authors mildly educational...

2008-04-02 18:47:00
Rudy, the Trulia Guru (yeah, it actually says Guru on his business card - that is too cool) was such a doll at RETech South that he shot some great candid video of speakers and hosts behind the scenes. Check out the blog post and video over at the Trulia Blog. It's a great little behind the scenes look at the conference and what the speakers are really like. Enjoy. However, I need to tell you this post is a total bribe. Rudy did send me this video of Jimmy Kimmel !$*@-ing Ben Affleck to complment my Matt Damon Sarah Silverman video.

From the horse's mouth: what Google says about content relevancy to search
2008-04-01 17:48:00
I know my post, Real Estate blogs are stores, not newspapers - so blog like you are selling houses, not writing for your local paper shocked and awed many of you.  I sat there, waited and read all the attacks of that post (even the competitor comment who told me to pack up my bags and leave real estate because I know nothing about SEO or real estate), however, there is one little thing I may have forgotten to mention.  My advice is based entirely on a Google document that was recently leaked.  On March 17, 2008, an internal training manual for a specific type of Google employee was leaked on the Internet.  This specific type of employee is responsible for manually reviewing sites and rating them on relevancy to search criteria.  Interestingly, on page 31 of this document, they actually use the example of "Sedona Real Estate."  Read also: Bad marketing candy from RSS Pieces Read also: Odysseus Medal Hmmm... is your interest peeked?  What Google says...

10 Best Fortune 500 Blogs
2008-03-30 19:10:00
With more and more Fortune 500 companies tossing their hat into the blogging and social media ring, I thought I would do a quick tour of the Big Boy Blogosphere and see who's getting it right and who needs to turn off the lights. Let's start with the ones that have figured out an angle and are actually using social media to communicate effectively with thier market or a segment of it.  The following Fortune 500 blogs are best of breed: Want to see a list of Fortune 500's that are blogging?  Check out the Fortune 500 Blogging Wiki.  *This list only includes corporate sponsored blogs and doesn't include personal blogs of executives or employees. Also, I intentionally left out Google, Yahoo and Microsoft's blogs because it is completely unfair to compare many of the other Fortune 500 blogs to these.  1. Real Estate blogs are stores, not newspapers - so blog like you are selling
2008-03-28 21:52:00
Would you replace the listings in your real estate office's front window with the town's event calendar, restaurant reviews and local business profile? No. So why would you do that on your blog? I'm going to say this up front, so there is no misunderstanding. The entire point of this post is to get you to understand that if your business is about real estate and you want to attract customers that have a real estate need you MUST write about real estate not skateboards and restaurants. Why? Because a home is not a whim purchase, it is typically a well planned decision. There are very few of us that pass by the local real estate office and say, "hey honey, I know we set out to buy a skateboard for Timmy, but let's buy a house instead, this store has pretty ones." Therefore, it is inconceivable to me that by driving people into your blog with an article about local skate parks, you will snag a home buyer. Seriously, find me one person that ever set out in the morning to ...

RETech South Was a Huge Success
2008-03-28 18:46:00
For those of you that were not at RETech South in Atlanta, GA, you missed out. Almost unbelievably Brad Nix and Matt Fagioli put together a full technology conference covering blogging, SEO, social networking, widgets, video and IDX services in less than a month. The event was hosted by blogger and Domus Consulting Co-Founder, Kevin Boer who did a stellar job of keeping the conference entertaining with his unparalelled wit. RSS Pieces was lucky enough to have sponsored a portion of this kick-off event. I had a total blast sitting on the SEO panel discussing the downsides of recprocal links, 3 way links and blogroll. We also touched on how Realtors need to attract consumer traffic instead of Realtor traffic and how to safely build authority with Google through backlinks. What's the difference between a sitemap and a Google sitemap and how can I
2008-03-26 21:42:00
Google is lazy.  OK, maybe not lazy, but at least efficient, meaning, because it must crawl 8 billion  web pages daily, it wants to do it as effectively as possible.  That means, its preferred method of crawling is to be able to find every page on a site within 2 leaps.  A site that is set up to allow Google to crawl efficiently is considered to have flat architecture and gets deeper full site crawls more often than one that is not structured this way.  I mean think about it, Google uses common sense.  If a reader would have a hard time finding a post that is 5 or 6 pages deep, Google thinks, "well, since a user would have a problem finding this link, it must not be important and I shouldn't bother crawling it."  Starting to see the importance of creating flat architecture for your real estate blog? If you think that a real estate blog will be your platform to rant and rave about local politics, favorite recipes and community event calendars?  Think again. Your local newspaper website probably already does that much better than you could dream of. Your real estate blog is about, get this, REAL ESTATE. You are not a journalist! You are a Realtor. So, you need to write highly focused real estate content if you want to be found through the search engines for terms related to real estate. You are not a journalist.  You are a Realtor.  You are not an event planner.  You are a Realtor.  You are not your town's newspaper.  You are a Realtor.  Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Here is a simple example of why you want to be found for real estate terms: According to KeywordDiscovery 4,669 people searched for Orlando Real Estate By contrast only 277 people searched for Orlando Museum(s) So, not only would being searchable by real estate terms net you more QUALIFIED traffic but it would als...

Things Losers Say: SEO doesn't matter: Fact: Ranking #1 in Google can impro
2008-03-12 12:19:00
I read it every day, "SEO doesn't matter... don't worry about SEO." Fact is, I couldn't disagree more. SEO is important. Why? Because when you rank for your prime short tail keywords, you 1. Garner more qualified traffic looking to buy or sell a home 2. Generate more real estate leads Let's clear the air- I don't sell SEO and nor have I ever sold SEO services to Realtors. I do, however, help Realtors SEO their sites for FREE and have helped to pull a number of Realtor sites back from Google penalties very quickly. Why? Because SEO isn't rocket science and enough people have their hands in a Realtor's pocket for me to need to sell a service you could easily and more effectively do yourself. Now, because I think SEO is important, doesn't mean I think it is the THE most important thing or that you shouldn't focus on writing on good, quality, engaging content. You need to do both. But knowing what terms to target and how to optimize your site so you can...

This is the deal.  I am calling out my friend, Vickie Townes.  I gotta love her because RSS Pieces was born out of our desire to put together a real estate website her.  That being said, Vickie IS the WORST blogger on earth (and she actually prides herself on that title!).   I tell people all the time that if Vickie blogs once every 4 months, we have to show up on her doorstep with clowns and a bounce house to throw her a party.  So, why am I calling out dear, sweet Vickie?  It's simple, I want to show you how a few RSS feeds from her MLS keep her blog alive, thriving and generating leads against all conceivable odds. Over the past two years, I have tried everything to shame Vickie into blogging, but, truth be told, she was already a successful Real tor when we launched her blog, so she simply does not have the time to blog.  Therefore, when we developed the RSS integration code for 1ParkPlace, Vickie's site was the perfect crash test dummy.&...

RSS Hugger, A Blog Directory that Actually Understands SEO
2008-03-09 02:41:00
So, I am in the process of writing an ultimate guide to real estate blog promotion and backlinking.  In that process, I am reviewing hundreds of blog directories to see which ones require reciprocal links and if you have to leave those reciprocal links on your site in infinitum or if you can remove them in a couple of weeks.  (Notice the dreaded chiclets in one of my side bar widgets).  Anyhow, when it came to RSS Hugger , a blog directory that combines Technorati, rss directories, and search engine optimization into one, I LOVED the way they required the reciprocal link.  Instead of some rediculously useless chiclet, they want me to write a review of their site.  This a makes perfect sense, they get a high quality backlink and some press.  Now, what do I particularly like about RSS Hugger?  I have the ability to post my RSS feed, get listed in their directory and I am dealing with a service that actually understands SEO.  So, take your blog an...

What a day to start real estate. REBlogGirl: And when did you start blogging? Where are your various blogs? I started blogging after reading "Small is the New Big" by Seth Godin, and then being prompted to join Active Rain from an email from Advanced Access. I joined AR, not knowing what blogging really was, Sure, I had a MySpace account, but that doesn't mean anything. I posted a blog/book review on Seth's book, it got featured (??) and, well, the rest is history. From there, I started a WP blog, which in conjunction with my AR blog, sent a lot of "link love" to my AA site. I started noticing my AR blog and WP blog and even my AA site start to rank for all kinds of interesting keywords, so I decided to take blogging more seriously. I started a hyper-local niche blog www.LivingInGreen...

How to get .edu backlinks, the holy grail of backlinks
2008-03-06 16:36:00
SIMPLE EXPLAINATION OF WHY YOU NEED TO BUILD BACKLINKS: other sites that link to your site are considered"friends" of your website. A website with "friends" that have influence like a Donald Trump or an Oprah Winfrey are given greater trust by Google than sites that have Jenna Jameson or Tara Reid as friends. So, in a backlink campaign, you want to attract quality, authority sites and forget about anyone who has a lesser PageRank than your site or sits in a bad neighborhood. Basically you want your site to hang out with cool, popular and trust worthy sites rather than loser sites, i.e. sites below a PR3. Read also: Ultimate guide to building backlinks WHY YOU WANT TO BUILD .EDU BACKLINKS EDU backlinks are the holy grail of all backlinks. Google gives extra emphasis to these backlinks so building just a few can dramatically improve your site's performance. For example, if youa re able to build just 5 .edu backlinks, you can see a small leap in SERP within 72 hours and larger ...

Confessions of a Real Estate Blog Link Whore: Trackback Spam Hurts
2008-03-02 20:35:00
I have often heard it said, RSS Pieces can be sooo restrictive. And it is true. We don't let our clients do anything they want with their blogs. When you stray too far from the sidewalk on an RSS Pieces blog, you will get a call from Mother Superior (Ines and Laurie started calling me this recently when I told them "no" to trackbacks.) The reason is simple, I've been in the SEO world for some time now and know what is good for a blog and what is bad. I try to avoid having our bloggers learn hard lessons, but every once in a while we have that one or in this case, two rebellious bloggers that insist, no, relentlessly nag us to turn on functionality we simply do not agree with. This is the true story of my terribly rebellious blogger, Ines Hegedus-Garcia. Read also: Are you a real estate blog link whore? Are you whoring out your real estate blog wth links?
2008-03-01 21:23:00
Eric Ward wrote one of my favorite SEO posts of all time entitled "Are You a Link Whore?" Often in the real estate blogosphere, the answer is "yes." So, I thought I would lay down the law when it comes to sluttin' around with your links and how you can avoid contracting a Google STD. Blog Glossary Definition of a Link Whore: A link whore is one who solicits links to her blog regularly or seems/is desperate to receive links to her blog. By now we all know backlinks (links form other website to your site) are important. In fact, high quality backlinks (meaning backlinks from pages with a higher pagerank or more authority in Google than your own page) are one of the most important factors Google considers when ranking your real estate blog or website. However, Google recognizes deliberate attempts to manipulate its linking algorithm. So, if you think that exchanging links with every Tom, Dick and hairy Real tor you meet will boost your site in the rankings, you are WRONG. While...

Mary McKnight Calls Greg Swann "Nicole Richie", seriously, I did that!
2008-02-28 19:49:00
Whether you love Greg Swann or you love to hate Greg Swann, one thing is clear... he engages people.  He knows something most people don't.  Humans are emotional junkies and the more outrageous you are the more people will flock to you.  Why? Because engaging is sometimes enraging!  People love to be happy, mad, sad.  It is one of the first things you learn when studying sociology.  Don't believe me?  Just look at how many people subscribe and read his blog daily.  Look at how many people kill themselves to write on Greg's blog so they can experience just a sliver of his popularity fallout.  So, what did I do to stir up some Greg Swann fallout?  With my coveted invite to Unchained (I'm not stupid, I never would have done this if I didn't have that yet and yes, this blog is a shameless plug for the event), I thought I would do what I do my best, stir up a little controversy.  And where better to do that but on Real Estate ...

SEO Tip of the Week: Target a Typo of a Common Keyword and Increase Search
2008-02-26 16:09:00
Just in case you didn't make it into my devilishly devious white hat SEO trickery session, here is one of the hidden gems you can start taking advantage of today.  Not ranking for your prime key terms?  Target the typo.  You can easily use the typos of common words to increase your search traffic by 30%. For example, on Monday of last week, we had a training session with U-Haul corporate in Phoenix.  They have been targeting their prime key term, U-Haul for some years.  U-Haul gets approximately 4,000 searches per day according to Keyword Discovery.  By simply removing the hyphen in the name, they could increase their daily searches to over 60,000.  While this is an instance where targeting the typo would be more valuable than targeting the keyword, look at these numbers: Phoenix, 117,365 searches Pheonix 12,878 searches Clearly, in this case, targeting the typo has a great deal of value.  Let's say tat you target the typo from time to time...
