Nutshell SEO: DynaCats Uncovered: why using it will cause you to get tossed
2008-02-24 23:53:00
In working on our new WordPress emulation system, I noticed a particularly sleazy method of adding extra pages to search engines and sites like Technorati "invented" by competitor.  It seems that they have stumbled upon a way of tweaking a URI to make it look like one page is actually many pages.  We all want more pages indexed but there are better ways to do that than spamming search engines with unnecessary links.  This time around I am taking the gloves off to directly point out how this competitor is causing his own clients to get systematically dropped from Google's index.  And yes, that has happened.  This goes way beyond this guy stealing our copyrighted code and even cutting and pasting parts of our own blog posts into theirs.  This is causing good people who paid a lot of money to lose traction with search engines.  As usual, I will not name names but let's just say it rhymes with steal plate clamato. What is the purpose of DynaCats? To...

What can Britney Spears teach you about writing a great real estate blog po
2008-02-20 22:37:00
Nothing, she is bat crap crazy and totally Toxic. And I don't recommend taking advice from the certifiably insane. But that's one heck of a headline, isn't it? Don't you have a need to know what Britney Spears could teach you about blogging if she could? That's the point. Writing headlines is what blogging is all about. The number one rule of copywriting is: every single sentence is designed to make you read the next one. So, if you can engage the reader in your headline, they will be more likely to read that first sentence of your blog post. "On average, 8 out of 10 people will read headline copy, but only 2 out of 10 will read the rest. This is the secret to the power of the headline, and why it so highly determines the effectiveness of the entire piece. The better the headline, the better your odds of beating the averages and getting what you've written read by a larger percentage of people. The Magnetic Headlines series will provide you with concrete guidance that wi...

2008-02-16 04:35:00
According to Technorati there are now 70 million blogs out there. The most concerning thing about all that competition is that Technorati also reports that only 55% of people who start a blog today will still be blogging 3 months from now.  That being said, consistancy is the name of the game when it comes to real estate blogging, you need to be consistent in your topic, keywords, posting frequency and article formats. Top 5 reasons why I hate chiclets on your real estate blog
2008-02-10 02:15:00
It's true, I hate your chiclets almost as much as I hate your blogroll... and not surprisingly, for almost the exact same reasons... the reciprocal linking, the ego stroking (AKA industry circle jerk), lack of usefulness to visitors and large on-page link count. Now, don't get all sensitive, you can be reformed. Even the best of bloggers succumb to the occasional chicklet or two, but 10, 20 little icons in your sidebar or footer, it's a little excessive, don't you think? What is a chicklet? A small icon adjacent to a blog post, article or web page to indicate the availability of an RSS feed, however sometimes they can be directory badges (reciprocal links) and other website awards and affiliations. Why do I hate your chiclets? 1. Reciprocal linking: most chiclets are nothing more than a cute little reciprocal link. Outside of the chiclets for feeds, your general directory and award chiclets typically require links back to the directory or award site. Not exactly so...

URGENT NOTIFICATION: IE7 Forced Upgrade on February 12
2008-02-08 17:05:00
For those of you that do not yet know, on February 12th 2008, Microsoft is forcing the vaccine for IE6 upon all users, the other other flawed browser, IE7 (the real cure, of course, being Firefox). What this means is when you turn on your computer on February 12th, your computer will forcibly update your IE6 to IE7. Now, I know some MLS' do not play nice with IE7, so here's the skinny on how to avoid this forcible upgrade: Read also: Just say NO to the forced upgrade to IE7 Read also: Microsoft's Documentation for avoiding the IE7 Upgrade How to avoid the IE7 forced upgrade: Microsoft says: Postponing the Windows Internet Explorer 7 Deployment If you have configured WSUS to automatically approve Update Rollups for installation, but you do not want to automatically install Windows Internet Explorer 7 via WSUS when it is released on February 12, 2008, you will need to disable this auto-approval rule before February 12, 2008. NUTSHELL SEO: Three Way Links: reciprocal links repackaged for the real est
2008-02-07 05:19:00
BY: JOHN MCKNIGHT Introduction: the template letter 3 way link request I just received an email forwarded from one of our large resellers where a client was asking their Internet marketing consultant (our reseller) if he should engage in 3 way links.  This client had received a template email requesting that they engage in a 3 way reciprocal link program to "boost" search engine credibility.  Funny thing is... the person who sent the email didn't BCC the list so we went through every single email address, looking at every single domain asked to participate... not a one of them was over a PageRank 3 with most of them in the PageRank 0-1 range.  Hmmm... a whole bunch of loser sites linking to each other in a ring of deception. Yeah, that is something we really want to recommend...  This linkster was so desperate to make his request seem legit that he even tried to add credibility to the letter by mentioning a respected real estate coach. The plot went something li...

Is Your Real Estate Blog Keyword Spamming Behind Your Back?
2008-02-05 13:52:00
Enough already... I have read this post or that post that claims this real estate blogger or that one is keyword spamming.  Let me set the record straight, to keyword spam in content is pretty hard- it would make your text almost unreadable.  What is more likely to be caught by engines is keyword spamming in the HTML. This happens when you or your web developer load your link, image, heading or other HTML tags with spammy "alt" "title" or other attributes.  While that was a great way to manipulate search positioning in 1999, it is a sorely outdated, dare I say, embarrassing way to do it today.  This is the most common type of keyword spamming caught by engines today. So, before we get into the what, when, where, how of it all, let's find out who is keyword spamming: Use This Tool to Check for Keyword Spamming :  spam detector tool ***FYI: CSS attributes with visibility set to none are very common today as more and more sites are CSS driven, this is not alway...

PageRank 5 Club Weekly Tip: Only Use 1 H1 Tag on Each Page
2008-02-01 04:55:00
While debated, it is generally accepted in SEO community that most search engines analyze text inside heading tags and use it to rank Web pages. They assume that anything important enough to put in larger text is also relevant to the page's content.  The <H1> tag is by far the most important: it describes the purpose of the whole site. Search engine spiders will use it to score your page's relevancy. Make it a more succinct version of your page's TITLE tag and include important keywords. The sub headers decline in importance relative to their size, but they're still useful: be sure you include keywords there too. Read also: Heading tags and search engine optimization Do not use heading tags as only a way to format text Heading tags are not just about font size, Google uses them to determine what text is most important in a document.  If H1s are most important followed by H2s, H3s, H4s, all the way down to H6s, then it would only make sense that you ought to only ...

NUTSHELL SEO: why redirecting keyword rich domains to your vanity domain do
2008-01-28 08:37:00
Introducing John McKnight: for those of you that don't know or can't tell by the last name, John is my husband and his claim to fame beyond that is writing the automatically SEOing blogging platform RSS Pieces' blogs run on. I have convinced him to write some posts here that may be a bit geekier and filled with more technical explanations than my average post. So, without further ado... First things first. One of the things that I find annoying is when people couch marketing advice as SEO advice - make no mistake, these are not the same things and they shouldn't be assumed to be. The first SEO myth I want to dispel is the theory that redirecting a bunch of keyword rich domains to your primary site that is possibly a vanity site (i.e. yourname.com) will improve the overall SEO value of your primary site. If you want the SEO value of a keyword rich domain, then use the keyword rich one as your primary domain and redirect your vanity domain to it, so you can use the vanity dom...

The 7 Worst Pieces of SEO Advice
2008-01-27 02:15:00
I have recently encountered a glut of bloggers that have taken some very bad advice in the form of reciprocal linking (this one seems to be repackaged monthly as a comment scheme, blogroll or some other hair-brained idea), too many links on a homepage, more than one H1 tag on a single page, etc.  There are a lot of sources for SEO advice in the real estate blogosphere, however, you need look at each person doling out that advice.  In the same way you wouldn't get parenting advice from Britney Spears, you don't want SEO advice from a self proclaimed guru that can't rank for their own keywords or can't pass simple SEO analysis.  Look past the fact that a person says they are an SEO expert and look at their ability to successful put multiple websites or blogs on the first page of Google for short tail keywords in difficult markets.  Who should you trust? 2008-01-19 16:08:00
The value proposition for BayWatch was simple: hot babes in skimpy bathing suits running on a beach + David Hasslehoff = men tune in every Wednesday at 8PM.  Talk about being called to action!  Now that is exactly the response you want to generate on your real estate blog.  You want all the eyeballs visiting your site to immediately be attracted by the shiny object at the top or side of each page that dumps them directly into your lead generator. Your property search and CMA are the Pamela Anderson and David Hasslehoff of your blog Yes, I know you probably don't hot chicks in bathingsuits and I sure hope you don't have David Hasslehoff, but what you likely do have is a property search and a CMA.  And believe it or not, those two things are very sexy to someone coming to your site to buy or sell property, so use them!  When I say use them, I don't mean burry them in some text link on the side, I mean, hire a graphics designer (or do it yourself if you can)...

Goal setting for bloggers: how to build a popular real estate blog
2008-01-15 03:17:00
A study conducted over the course of 20 years followed Harvard grad incomes and found that while 90% of grads made $X annually ($X was not defined) after 20 years, the other 10% made 10 times $X. What separated the 90% from the selected 10% was that the 10% wrote down their goals, made specific plans to reach them and checked in with those goals each year. So, what separated the millionaires from the average Joes was their ability to set and track their goals. The same thing holds true for your real estate blog. You must set goals and track your progress in order to reach your blogging potential. Baseline: When you start your blog, you are starting form a baseline of 0. You probably don't have any backlinks, PageRank or vistors.  Basically, you can't find yourself on a search engine with two hands, a flashlight, a compass and a map. And, honestly, that's good.
