Google is NOT the Evil Empire stealing content from real estate blogs
2007-12-17 04:01:00
I recently read a bunch of SEO conspiracy articles floating around the real estate blogosphere about how Google is "stealing" content, traffic, listings, clicks, leads, your first born child, etc. I even read one conspiracy theorist that actually suggested you forget about Google altogether because the Top Realtors in the country can't be found on the first page therefore, neither should YOU. I suppose it never occurred to this Realtor that the Top Realtors in the country have far more robust networks and far more dollars to throw at marketing than the average Realtor and therefore may not need the boost Google would give them. Now, for those of you that have thought about drinking this crazy Cool-Aid, let's consider what Google's role is and what it does for you, your website and your business and why you need to cater to Google to benefit from its services. Top 5 On-page Search Engine Optimization Tips for Real Estate Blogs
2007-12-13 20:57:00
While I usually focus on bite sized SEO tips for your real estate blog, I thought that I’d compile a list of the 5 most important and effective ways to boost your search engine positioning in 30 days or less. Think you that dramatically changing your search engine positioning is impossible in 30 days? Take the case of Ann Cummings, www.newhampshiremainerealestate.com – I sat down with Ann and Bear (the man behind the Realtor) and went over following SEO strategies with them back in late October. As of December 1, Ann’s blog went from Nowhere’s-ville to #5 in Google for her keyword, “Portsmouth Condos.” In this post, I am going to focus entirely on things you can directly do to your blog rather than on outside factors like backlinking which can take more time to affect your search positioning. 2007-12-10 18:59:00

Happy Thanksgiving
2007-11-21 22:49:00
On Thanksgiving Day, families gather together, prayers are said, and thanks are given.  Everyone prepares their big dinners, with roasted turkey, and dressing.    The first Thanksgiving took place in New England and was celebrated by the Pilgrim settlers who established Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1620.  The Pilgrims had struggled for so long on this voyage with little food and much sickness taking over.  In the spring, the Indians had helped the Pilgrims plant corn, and in the autumn, the first crop was harvested.  Governor William Bradford demanded that three days were dedicated solely to prayer and thanks.  The Pilgrims planned a huge feast and invited many of the Indians to join them.  This was the beginning of Thanksgiving that spread like a wildfire throughout other colonies over the years.  In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day to be held on the last Thursday in November each yea...

Blogging to your own drummer will hurt you: the curse of improvisational re
2007-11-08 16:54:00
There is a formula to successful business blogging, but so often I see Realtors straying from it and basically, blogging to their own drummer with highly personal rants and cutesy posts. My first questions to these Realtors is “do you sit on top of the search engines for your prime keywords?” and “do you have quality consumer traffic and leads.” Typically, the answers to those simple questions are a big fat “NO.” So, if blogging is all about building business, if your real estate blog isn’t generating it, then you need to re-evaluate your blogging approach. Improv isational blogging simply doesn’t work.  I recently read an article by Brian Clark over at CopyBlogger comparing improvisational jazz to the improvisational blogger. I don’t know about you, but I am a huge fan of Jazz and LOVE Miles Davis. I consider Kind of Blue one of the greatest albums of all time. However, my man Miles went through...

How to Build Quality Backlinks for your Real Estate Blog, Part 2
2007-11-05 20:48:00
Why Build Links? Build Authority with Search Engines: As previously stated in the first installment in this series, Search Engines value links back to your site and use them to rate the value of your site based on those “votes.” Gain Direct Traffic: Users often come across links to your real estate blog on other sites which results in direct referred traffic back to your real estate blog. Increase Visibility, Branding and Influence: With more places for web visitors to see links to your real estate blog, you become an authority in your field and expand your sphere of influence to gain more viral links back to your site. How to Build Quality Backlinks for your Real Estate Blog, Part 1
2007-10-31 21:57:00
What are Backlinks ? Backlinks, links from other sites to your real estate blog, help to improve your credibility with search engines, online visibility, content reach and traffic. Therefore, building quality backlinks is just as important to the health and well being of your real estate blog as the content that you write. So, let’s take a good hard look at not only why and how search engines value backlinks but now you go about building quality backlinks through an easy to follow link campaign. Why do search engines measure backlinks? In simple terms, search engines consider each backlink a “vote’ for your site. It is a way for Google to determine the overall authority and popularity of your site. Happy Halloween from the RSS Pieces Team
2007-10-31 19:07:00
Halloween also known as All Hollow’s Eve is a time for costumes, candy, Jack-O-Lanterns, bon fires, parties, and much more. Every year on October 31, children and adults all around the world dress up in their cute and ugly costumes. It is a great time to have safe fun and pretend to be someone or something you’re not for one night. The origin of Halloween began with the Celtic festival of Samhain, long before Christianity. November 1 was considered by them to be the ‘day of death’, because the leaves began to wilt and fall, temperatures began to drop, and it started to get darker outside sooner than normal. Also believed was that on October 31, Samhain, the lord of death, gathered the spirits of all who died that year. These spirits were confined to an animal’s body for the year as punishment for their evil deeds, and on the eve of October 31 they were released and given permission to return to their previous home to visit ...

Google Slaps Real Estate Blogs in Latest PageRank Update
2007-10-29 19:07:00
About two weeks ago, you may have noticed your site or ones you visit regularly declining in the search results for prime terms. It was the result of what has now come to be known as the Google Slap. That was a precursor to what many real estate blogs saw happen when PageRank updated the other day and their blogs fell a point or two. Now, fear not, this was not a slap just to real estate, many a Technorati 100 blog felt the same slap. Just look at Search Engine Guide which fell from a 7 to a 5, SERoundtable which fell from a 7 to a 6, Forbes which fell from a 7 to a 5, and the 9rules which 8 to a 6.  Read on to see a sample list of real estate blogs that fell in PageRank. I’m penning this post with the understanding that you probably haven’t recently sustained a closed head injury and do, indeed, understand that tens of thousands of other Real tors, mortgage brokers and stagers are out there writing furiously on their real estate blogs about the very same subject and trying to reach the very same people you are. Real Estate Blog SEO Tip of the Week: Sitemaps
2007-10-04 20:25:00
Google LOVES sitemaps! Every site should have a sitemap, especially the big ones with lots of pages. A sitemap is a complete resource guide for readers and search engines including a list and description of each page on a site. If your homepage lands a search result and you have a sitemap on your site and it was indexed then each individual page within your site will automatically be indexed for you. How wonderful is that? The use of a sitemap doesn’t guarantee that a page will be indexed immediately after you hit that save button, but the use of a sitemap provides hints for web crawlers to find new and changed content on your site. Think about this, a reader comes to your page looking for information and begins to get very frustrated not being able to find anything, what do they do? They leave! Three, that’s the average number of clicks a reader will follow until they leave your page when looking for information. Having a sitemap ...

Why Should the Realtors BLOG?

On Friday I attended BLOGORLANDO and inspired I learned so much. One important thing I learned was that my instincts about Blog ging and Real Estate are right on track.   This is a powerful tool for Realtors .  As I listened to Shel Israel (Naked Conversations), Tom Biro, Jake McKee, Chris Heuer and the many others; my head was spinning how to implement Social Media in our Real Estate business.   Toby Bloomberg wrote in response to my post on ActiveRain The un-conference – An Improvisation In Learning which pulled all my thoughts from BLOGORLANDO into how Real Estate Professionals can take advantage of the dramatic changes happening in business today.  Read more »

BLOG ORLANDO - The unconference   Yesterday I attended BLOG ORLANDO at Rollins College.  I found out about this wonderful event from Toby Bloomberg of Atlanta, GA and the Diva Market BLOG.  I meet Toby because of the Laurie Manny Challenge.... Toby -- Thank you!  Wow!!!! What a day!   And to think had Laurie Manny not challenged me to reach outside of my comfort zone I would have never known about this wonderful event in my own backyard! There are several communities throughout the country starting to run these gatherings!   The day started at 8am with registration and we finished around 5:30 with a full schedule of events!  So if your community has one, get involved!   Not only did I learn during the sessions but from the interactions between sessions. They proudly called this an unconference.  What is an unconference?  Well it was about the structure of the day.  The presenters did not present as much...

How To Avoid Going To The Google Sandbox for Keyword Stuffing
2007-09-26 22:48:00
KEYWORD STUFFING? Go Directly to Jail Googl e Jail that is...     Do you know the difference between writing keyword rich text and what the search engines perceive to be keyword stuffing or keyword density?  According to Wikipedia: Keyword stuffing is considered to be an unethical search engine optimization (SEO) technique. Keyword stuffing occurs when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content.  Including your main keywords in your title, text and tags is acceptable and advised. One 3 word keyword rich phrase for about every 50 words of text is about the limit. Keywords used at the top of the post are given a higher value by the search engines. It is advisable to target several keywords in any given post, mix it up, but keep it interesting.  Writing keyword rich text is not that difficult, if you are writing about your local area, go ahead and mention it several times, put it in your title and in your tags; 3 to 7% is re...
