Up To The End Of The Road
2008-03-05 04:30:00 We have been itching to get out and enjoy these beautiful, snow=covered mountains we live in but with the big storms we've had it hasn't been easy to do. However, after several days of nice sunshine the roads were finally free of snow and ice so we set out this morning for a drive up to the higher elevations. As we turned onto Hwy 89 and began climbing in altitude the depth of the snow started increasing rapidly. Soon we were winding our way alongside the east fork of the Carson River. As we drove through the canyon we could look down at the dark, clear water as it flowed between its snowy banks and swirled past the various snow-covered boulders that in places sit out in the middle of the river. Occasionally we passed a small rivulet tumbling down the canyon walls and crossing under the road in a culvert on its way to join the river. When we arrived at the junction of Hwys 89 and 4 we were surprised to discover that although the gate to Hwy 89 over Monitor Pass was closed, the gate ... Lightworkers
2008-02-21 04:42:00 I know that numbered amongst the readers of my blogs are Lightworkers, Shamans, Mystics, and folks of various other spiritual paths. Although we may have different ways of connecting with our Creator I believe we all share the desire of helping our brother and sister humans to access the higher worlds of Spirit and enjoy a closer connection with God.I have recently become a member of Lightworkers. This is an online community comprised of the kind of loving, helpful people I described above. The site is quite extensive and includes a blog for each member and, if you happen to be a channel, there is a special section for your wonderful messages.I invite you to take a look at the site and give serious consideration to joining with us. Balanced Rock
2008-02-01 18:40:00 Let us move away from the cold snow for a bit and to the season of Spring. In fact, it's late spring and all the snow has melted away from the lower flanks of the mountains. The air is still quite crisp though and the warmth of a light jacket feels good. Just a short hike from the pull out on the highway brings into view my destination. A minute or so later, after winding my way through some Manzanita and several large boulders, I arrive at the base of it...Balanced Rock . This spot is just brimming with energy. I can feel it radiating from the rock, the surrounding forest, even from the brown pine needles and cones that lay on the ground. I receive from each a unique impression or viewpoint as I gently touch and connect with them. The Balanced Rock invites me to lean back against its base and rest. As I do so the connection deepens and I am suddenly provided with a panoramic viewpoint of the surrounding forest and the lake from the very top of the rock. What a breathtaking thing. I ...
And Then It Snowed Some More
2008-01-06 18:50:00 The lull in the weather didn't last long yesterday. The third storm came in early in the afternoon and snow fell throughout the rest of the day and all night. Total snowfall for the the three storms is probably in the 8-10 foot range, especially in the upper mountain areas.Once again the sun is out and the view from my third floor apartment is breathtaking. It's quiet since there is very little traffic and no wind. I look across the road and enjoy the sight of the pine trees all loaded with snow. From another window I can see a big white mound that represents the location of my car. After the snow removal people get the walks cleared maybe I will venture forth and dig it out.I keep returning to the view of the snow-covered trees. As I sit there looking upon that pristine scene I feel a joy of just being here to witness such remarkable beauty.
A Blizzard Report
2008-01-05 20:00:00 Well folks, the weather people got this one right. It was a wild day and night. Not really so bad where I live but in the communities a little higher up and on the mountain passes the wind and heavy snow was treacherous. Total whiteout conditions at times.Surprisingly, all the passes into the Lake Tahoe area were kept open but officials constantly warned people not to drive unless it was absolutely necessary. The blizzard is over for the moment and the sun has peeked through a few times but after a short break it appears another wave of snow will come in.Over the next few weeks I plan to do a some posts about the experiences and challenges of living in the mountains. Until next time...Be warm and filled with joy.Louis More About: Report , Blizzard
Big Storm Coming...Maybe
2008-01-03 00:40:00 The weather folks have been especially strong in their language concerning a series of storms heading our way. These usually over-conservative forecasters are saying things such as "confidence is high for snow amounts in the 5-10 foot range." Also, since there are supposed to unusually strong winds, they are saying, "travel over the mountain passes could be next to impossible and even become LIFE THREATENING."So, it appears we may get dumped on big time. A real "rip-snorter." Of course, we may get nothing. That happens more often than not. I'll post an update when it hits. More About: Storm
A "Can't Miss" New Year Resolution
2008-01-01 02:55:00 It's amazing how many people make New Year resolutions that they should know won't be kept. Of course a lot of the folks are so zonked when they make them they won't even remember where they were or anything else.Make it easy on yourselves. Use Lou's "Can't Miss " New Year Resolution . Repeat after me..."For my 2008 resolution I resolve to make NO New Year Resolution."See...you can't miss. Happy New Year, folks.
Snowflake And Friend
2007-12-15 01:32:00 We greet you. I am part of what the humanfolks call a snowflake. Although the bit of moisture that I am has been to every part of the planet at one time or another I have actually remained in this general area for about three of your years now. On one occasion I have fallen as a raindrop and during the past two winters I've enjoyed floating down in what you refer to as a flurry. Plenty of room to move about on the little eddies of the breeze...doing swirls and twirls. I even did a complete loop. But enough from me...I'll let my close friend give a few words now.Uh...yes...ok...I don't have much of worth. I've never connected with a human this way. I am what is referred to as the "impurity" that must be present for a snowflake to form. I am a very minute speck of dust. Nothing special about where I've been. I was never trod on by Jesus nor swept out of a movie star's house. I was caught up in a great storm that devastated one of your coastal cities and after being blown about i... Approaching Storm
2007-12-06 07:16:00 With a winter storm still a day away we were able to enjoy some quality time on the shore of the lake at a park called Sand Harbor. We started out walking along the beach but the sand was deep so we took a foot path that hugs the edge of a rocky bit of shoreline. The air was quite cool and there were high clouds as we began our walk. We wound our way past some Pine Trees and a few Manzanita bushes. Note: Manzanita is sometimes referred to as "Whoa Bushes" because if you try and walk through a clump of them and encounter their sharp branches you'll usually stop short and say "WHOA." Soon we came to some massive boulders and nestled amongst them a wooden bench where we sat for awhile and enjoyed the view. A squirrel appeared a short distance away and fussed at us for being in his territory. Several Stellar's Jays (mountain blue jays" came around but only for a moment or two. Most of the time the only sound we heard was the gentle lapping of the water against the sand below. Some dense... More About: Storm
Talk To The Trees
2007-12-05 01:00:00 We can go out into the forest and enjoy being in the company of the trees. We can even learn to communicate with them. Yes, I mean talk to trees and hear telepathically what they may have to say. If this sounds neat...well, it is. Educational too. Trees , for the most part, have been around for many years...some of them for as much as 5,000 years. That's a long time to stand in one spot but it is also denotes a lengthy connection to the universal stream of knowledge. If we are open and trusting we can occasionally tap into some of that knowledge. We may, however, get more than we expected. I recall one day during which I received a rather in-depth dissertation on the human misuse of God-given free will. It was very much on target and embarrassingly, a lot of it could be applied to my life.I have favorite trees I like to visit. Especially high on my list are the Redwoods. Some of them are 2,000 years in age and they are among the tallest living things on Earth. They have a wonderful a... More About: Talk
A Word From The Turkey Farm
2007-11-21 21:20:00 Hey there, human folks. Turk ey Tom here. I know, I know...not a very inventive name but somehow Turkey Ted, or Bob, or even Marvin just doesn't seem to swing. Anyway, me and the family want wish you a happy (and hopefully turkey-less) holiday season. There are lots of alternative things you can eat instead of one of us. A super giant pizza with triple extra cheese should be enough to make you feel just as sick and miserable as you normally would after over-stuffing yourself with the traditional dinner. If you just got to have the turkey feeling to your meal then get one of those tofu fake things. It may make you gag from your toenails up but at least me and the missus will still be alive and doing the turkey trot around the yard.Best wishes,Tom and Hen-rietta More About: Word , Farm
An End To Indian Summer
2007-11-09 04:43:00 After some early Winter type weather Indian Summer came in and there has been several weeks of absolutely wonderful days and nights. It has to end sometime and that time seems to be fast approaching. It looks like we have some snow coming in this weekend. And it seems as if the Plant Kingdom knows it's that time. The leaves have all fallen off the trees now except for a very few determined stragglers. The clouds that show up daily have a snow laden look to them. The wind blowing off the mountains has that icy chill that cuts through the heaviest of coats. The lake, always cold anyway, is even colder. It's deep blue color is even deeper now.My creaky joints are stiffer each morning until I get the house warmed up. Yes, Winter definitely approaches.
Human Icicles
2007-10-17 04:50:00 We went over to a place on the west shore of the lake with the idea of taking a walk along a small creek. We needed the exercise and walking around enjoying nature's beauty is our favorite way of working out. When we parked and got out of the car we noticed the sky had gotten overcast. Not a big surprise since another weather system was due in a little later. We just figured it was arriving earlier than forecast. As we headed down the path to the creek we suddenly heard a sound. We wondered if it could be the creek but as near as we could tell the creek had no water in it. The sound was getting louder. Well, if it wasn't the creek then it must be...wind. And at the moment of that brilliant deduction...the coldest blast of air I've felt in awhile hit us head-on. It wasn't just wind...it was FRIGID WIND. Not only had the storm arrived early, it had arrived with gusto. We walked a little further, leaning into that coldness. We had on jackets but the wind seemed to cut right through t... Autumn Revisited
2007-10-14 05:21:00 Earlier this week I visited one of my favorite places to see fall folage. Because of the early storms it took a bit more hunting to find good stands of colorful trees but, as you can see, the effort definitely paid off. This spot is in a canyon and near a small creek that I wrote about on another blog. It is quiet here and fairly secluded.Over the years I have spent many minutes in deep communion with God here. More About: Autumn
A Whopper Bear
2007-10-08 05:29:00 Ah...life in the mountains. Nothing like it and always an adventure. Sometimes more so than I would like. This evening, when we came out of the laundry room, my wife said, "Oh, look!" I looked and coming down the walkway on the other side of the driveway was a black bear the size of a battleship. And it was coming in our direction. I didn't freak, but I came close. My wife said it was not an adult so I have to wonder what size it will be when it grows up. She thought it was really pretty and I thought it was really pretty BIG. We managed to get upstairs and after I fumbled around trying to get the blasted key in the lock we finally got inside and I felt better. The bear ignored us but I kept thinking that if the bear was hungry we might suddenly begin looking like supper.I love the natural world and have had numerous and beautiful encounters with members of the animal kingdom but I must admit that a bear with the potential of growing up to become the size of Godzilla is a bit wilder... Chasing Autumn
2007-10-05 04:56:00 I dearly love the Autumn time of the year. I won't say it's my favorite season because all the seasons are my favorites. It's been a tough time for the beautiful Fall leaves this time. With the sudden onslaught of cold temperatures, coupled with early snow I haven't been able to find much in the usual vast stands of Aspen trees with their Fall coats of yellow and gold leaves.Yesterday I was finally able to find some pretty good color in an area called Hope Valley. I trust you will enjoy this image. I certainly enjoyed the short time between storms that allowed me to make the drive over there. There has been a lot of high wind today announcing the arrival tonight of even another cold front and yes...probably more snow.
Potpourri Of Weather
2007-09-24 04:58:00 Mother Nature continued her show of weather variety. This weekend we had at various times snow, rain, sleet, and hail. There were some thunderstorms and in the highest mountain areas some thunder-snow. A road over one of the high mountain passes was closed by snow for two days.We went from no wind to high wind and back to no wind. Occasionally there were even moments of sunshine. And it's been cold. Unseasonably cold. Temperatures are due to drop into the 20s tonight. I've actually had to turn the furnace on.There was a motorcycle rally in Reno and the weather got so bad there that a lot of the motorcyclists took shelter under the freeway bridges and watched the cars slip and slide on the wet and icy pavement and crash into one another. Early Snow
2007-09-20 23:07:00 Well folks...we got some snow last night in the higher elevations of the surrounding mountains. Looks like more of the same for Saturday. A little early but it's nice to see some of the white stuff after the long and very warm summer we had here. The aspen trees were just beginning to show signs of announcing the autumn season with their beautiful golden leaves but now all of a sudden it feels and looks more like winter. Could it be that we are going to go directly from summer to winter? I've seen it happen before but it is unusual. More About: Seasons , Snow , Early , Earl
Shaking Ground And Swirling Clouds
2007-08-16 04:12:00 I think probably the folks in Hawaii wondered, with a hurricane heading their way, what more could happen. Then the answer came...the ground started shaking. Apparently neither of these two widely differing natural occurrences caused any major disruption of life there and we certainly thank God for that. The above is typical of some of the strangeness that is showing up more and more all around the globe. Both in weather and other natural phenomena there is an increasing intensity and bizarreness. As I am writing this I was just informed that two whopper earthquakes have occurred near Lima, Peru. Both of them well into the magnitude 7 strength and very close together.Since yesterday a tropical storm has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is now threatening the Texas coast. There is probably not enough time for it to strengthen into a hurricane but it still poses a possible major problem since Texas is already waterlogged from rain. This is one of the states that just a year ago was suf... More About: Ground , Clouds
Grandpa Pine
2007-07-26 03:04:00 Greetings. I am that aging pine tree you very lovingly call "Grandpa." I bring a few words to you from those of the plant world who were burned in the recent fire event. It is desired that you know that although many trees and other plant beings were affected as a result of this fire none truly ceased to exist. Please understand this. All that were involved were transformed...not killed. It is that way with all of creation, There is truly no death. Only transformation and change. As for the future health of that land area, within days new plant life was already preparing to nudge aside the ashes in search of light for growth. New plants will continue to spring forth and renew the land.We acknowledge your concern and appreciate your love. Fear not...all is well and as it should be. ...Grandpa Pine through Louis
Mostly Ashes
2007-07-12 03:22:00 Today I took a trip through the burned-out forested area near the lake. Only a week before the fire broke out I had also driven through there. The route is one I have used numerous times on my way out of the Lake Tahoe area because it was so much more scenic than driving past the industrial section on my way west. It's not so scenic any more. Where nice homes once nestled back in the pine forest there are now in many cases only a scorched chimney amid heaps of ashes to mark where they once stood. As far as you can see the once beautiful trees look more like giant, burnt matchsticks. It wasn't a pretty sight, folks. My insides twisted in agony for the people who lived there one day and were rendered homeless the next. Many had only fifteen minutes or less to flee before the wind-driven firestorm swept over their homes.Oh, but how much worse it could have been. Yes, hundreds of homes were burned. Possessions were lost...many of them irreplaceable family mementos of days long past. But... More About: Ashes
Prescription For The Punies
2007-06-26 20:36:00 You say your head aches? You've got the runny nose and your ears are stopped so bad up you can't hear yourself burp? Add to all that you got the bloat and your back hurts something terrible? You've taken aspirins, used up a whole box of tissues, and tried burping louder but overall you still feel like crap? And this describes one of your good days?Well, why not shun the pills, the gas relief glop, and all the other do-nothing remedies for awhile. Instead, limp on out to the car and head for an appointment with Dr. Mother Nature. I have found that sometimes even a very short commune with nature can accomplish more for a person than all the "wonder drugs" in the world. If at all possible try to find a grove of trees where you can be alone. Just you and the natural world. Find a tree that seems inviting to you. Sit down and lean back against it. Maybe take off your shoes and socks and wiggle your toes in the dirt.Try and relax your body totally. Talk to God. Talk to the tree. Talk to... More About: Prescription
A Bumblebee Nudge
2007-06-12 02:50:00 A couple of years ago my wife and I were in the Yosemite high country during the early spring. There was still considerable snow in some places but when we turned into one of our favorite spots we were pleased to discover it had all melted there. This particular little place has a few picnic tables nestled in the trees and an energetic creek flows close by. We particularly enjoy climbing out on a large boulder in the middle of the water and losing ourselves in the surrounding beauty and soothing sound of the stream. This is relaxation at its best.Because of the snowmelt we knew the creek would be running high so I quickly headed down the path to see if we would be able to get to our mid-stream sitting place. I had gotten about half way to the creek when I heard my wife yell for me to watch out.Immediately I heard a loud buzzing sound. I quickly turned around and found myself eye to eye with a big bumblebee. Figuring it would go away I turned and started on down the path. Again my wif... More About: Bumble , Bumblebee
Let's Hear It For The Weeds
2007-05-26 05:07:00 I like weeds. They're hardy and will grow just about anywhere. They don't require tilling and feeding with some special fertilizer. Lots of them are good eats and some have beautiful flowers.I don't know why weeds got such a bad rap. It it weren't for them some places would be really barren, funky looking affairs. Consider how dreary those wonderful, lush, high mountain meadows would be without all those wild plants ablaze with their blooms. There may be those dry summers where the lawn of St. Augustine grass looks bedraggled but by golly the crabgrass can be counted on to remain nice and green. And, of course, we can always depend on dandelions to proliferate and supply a good show of yellow flowers.I like weeds and I ain't the only one. God created them so He certainly must think they are special. Who am I to doubt God's wisdom?So...all together now...let's hear it for the weeds. *Yeaaaaaaa! Live long and prosper." Me And The Cats
2007-05-17 00:38:00 Over the years I've had a fair number of pets. Mostly they have been cats. I dearly love cats and enjoy being around them. They are clean, loving beings and I have actually felt at times that a certain cat had come into my life to teach me special things I needed to learn.Although I don't have any of those little furry people living with me at this time there still seems to be a connection between me and the cat world. No matter where I go, if there is a cat anywhere around it will quickly show up. Sometimes I'll hear a "meowing" from what sounds like a fair distance away. But it will get closer rather quickly and suddenly the cat will appear...coming my way fast. Other times a cat will show up quietly and the first I know it's around is when it starts rubbing against my ankles. In both cases, I'll squat down and slowly hold out a hand. The cat will usually take a few sniffs of my hand and then give it a little rub, sometimes with a tooth. Then I usually rub it behind its ears ... More About: Cats
An Unhappy Forest
2007-05-09 03:31:00 I took a walk to another wild area not far from my house. Unfortunately, it's not as wild and natural as it was in days gone by.A couple of years ago the forest service went into the area and cleared out a lot of the old plant growth and cut down quite a few trees. Since they had no knowledge or interest concerning the subtle realms of nature they disrupted the spirit realm that supported that section of forest. As I entered the area I could feel the discord that still lingers. There is a lot of distrust among the Nature Spirits. I was welcomed, but with reservations. Other than an acknowledgement of my greeting I was unable to establish communication with any of the resident beings. So completely different from my trip to another forest a week earlier. Sore Leg Update
2007-04-30 22:30:00 In the post "Through The Woods To The Lake" I mentioned that I knew I would have sore leg muscles as a result of walking across the wide expanse of deep sand between the woods and the edge of the lake. It may have sounded as if I dreaded that reality but such was not the case. I was just acknowledging what I knew was to be. I made this same trek last year and I remembered the sore, stiff muscles well. So, was it as bad as last year? No...it was worse. My legs are one year older and even crankier than ever. And this time it hung on for an extra day or two for good measure. GROAN!!!Ah, but that's ok. I remember the beauty of the view and the thrill in my soul as it drank in the splendor of our Creator's fine work. That memory is like a soothing balm. Aspirin also helps. More About: Update
Through The Woods To The Lake
2007-04-28 23:58:00 A couple of days ago I parked next to the church and walked across the road to the path that meanders through the woods. It's the time of year when I revisit my favorite local spots in nature and reconnect with the beings who reside there. The sentinels of the forest, made up of the tall pine and fir trees. The smaller, shrub and bush type entities who are scattered here and there. The little flowering plants that make up the class of growing things called "weeds" by most people. And of course the birds...the jays, robins, chickadees, and woodpeckers. They're all there along with the ever energetic Douglas Squirrels and the chipmunks. Shortly after entering the woods I stopped and offered a greeting to all the elementals and nature spirits who reside there. Immediately, although all had been perfectly quiet and still, a gust of wind suddenly ruffled my hair. I smiled at the acknowledgment and quietly said, "And a hello to you too, Brother Wind." On through the woods I moved...stop... More About: Woods , Lake
A Wild and Future Blog
More articles from this author:2007-04-27 22:53:00 Well...I've been thinking. Now that, in itself, can bring up some wild, spooky results. Anyway, I've been thinking that the addition of yet a third blog would solve a problem I keep banging my head into. I thought I had enough diversity in the two blogs I'm doing to handle the full range of subjects I had planned to offer. Ho-ho, Ha-ha! Not so! I'm actually finding that a lot of the things I want to write about are so diverse and far-out (or far-in) that they need a special place of their own.Remember, I've been doing spiritual seeking for a lot of years. Some of it has been pretty straightforward. Most of it, however, has been and continues to be the stuff of dreams...except that I experience it in full consciousness. So, one more blog will be forthcoming. I'm already going preliminary work on it and as soon as I put it online I'll post an announcement.I think you'll like it. More About: Future , Blog , Wild 1, 2 |
