The American Government Funds The Polygamist FLDS Sect!
2008-04-15 19:44:00
It seems you can’t turn on your TV or visit your favorite internet sites without being bombarded with the latest misadventures of those wacky West Texas polygamists. Because of this, I had resolved to abstain from the redundancy and avoided making comments. However, an article on MiamiHerald.com, shines a light on an outrage that is not being covered by the mainstream press. Here are some highlights: “American taxpayers have unwittingly helped finance a polygamist sect that is now the focus of a massive child abuse investigation in West Texas, with a business tied to the group receiving a nearly $1 million loan from the federal government and $1.2 million in military contracts.” “The ability of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or FLDS, to operate and grow is largely dependent on huge contributions from its members and revenue from the businesses they control…” “… NewEra Manufacturing in Las Vegas, has been awarded more than $1.2 mil...

Does Religion Have A Place In American Politics and Government?
2008-04-07 19:06:00
If you’re like me, you get sick of important issues being reduced to two minute shouting matches on the evening talk shows. For this reason, I am pleased to bring to your attention, a recent debate which took place at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs. It was part of the National Discussion and Debate Series. The debated resolution was: "Religion should have no place in politics or government." The moderator of the debate was Evan Thomas, Editor at Large of Newsweek. In Favor of the Resolution: Rev. Barry Lynn, Executive Director of American s United for Separation of Church and State Jacques Berlinerblau, Associate Professor and Director of the Program for Jewish Civilization at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service Apposed to the Resolution: Chuck Colson, Founder and Chairman of Prison Fellowship Ministries Bishop Harry Jackson, Senior Pastor of Hope Christian Church The debate has aired on a few PBS stations around...

Toast Appears on Jesus and Pat Robertson Declares War!
2008-04-02 00:48:00
Two important items are in the news today. First, the image of a piece of toast was found on an ancient picture of Jesus Christ: Second, today Pat Robertson declared another war against nonbelievers. Here's a quote from Robertson's sermon: "The secularists and atheists are trying to take another religious holiday from God fearing Christians. It was on, or around, April 1st that our Lord rode a holy ass into Jerusalem declaring His Lordship. But, be not fooled, for Jesus had NO intention to establish his Kingdom. He was simply playing the original April Fool's joke. Join me brothers and sisters, and help me defeat these Hell bound heathens. We must again claim this day for the Kingship of Jesus. It is time to establish the Kingdom of God on Earth as it is in Heaven. This passage of Scripture is simply a metaphor for Believers today. Let God use you. Let Christ ride you. Be Christ's holy ass."

Exposing The Tactics: Ben Stein & The Producers of Expelled!
2008-03-29 21:32:00
For some reason, this site seems to be read by a lot Christians. Perhaps it is because I used to be a minister; or possibly it is my many references to the Bible. Who knows why? My last post, which was simply my notes from the Expelled press conference (Here), generated quite a bit of email from believers. Many of which believe there are two equally scientific sides in the Evolution/Creation debate. I would like to bring attention to all (believers and nonbelievers alike), four deceptive tactics being used to promote the movie, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. Inoculated from these, you will be equipped to examine the evidence and make an informed decision. 1. Note the “talking head” double standard. The hypocrisy of the righteous right’s pundits (Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and O’Reilly) is blatant. They have all spoke about the glories of this movie. However, they dismissed and discredited Fahrenheit 9/11 and SICKo in their entirety because of Michael Moore’s inequi...

My Notes From Expelled Movie Press Conference! PZ Myers Crashed It!
2008-03-28 23:43:00
Below are my notes taken from the “invitation only” press teleconference for the movie: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. For the sake of time, I am not taking the time to edit the notes. So forgive me if something does not make sense or I use bad grammar. I may even attribute a quote to the wrong person. Also, to avoid confusion, I will try to put my comments in parenthesis. I have a lot more I would like to say, but I will save it for another post. The purpose of this post is simply to get the facts out. Begin Teleconference: Introduction was given by Paul Lower. He was also the marketer for: The Chronicle of Narnia and Mel Gibson’s, Passion of The Christ. Comment is made that according to Blog Pulse, the movie is the number one topic in the blogosphere. The producers state that the purpose of this movie is to reveal what has become a modern day witch hunt. That many scientists are being fired because they simply question Darwin’s theories. They also speak of the so...

Richard Dawkins Video from UW Madison
2008-03-12 13:42:00
As a follow up to yesterday's article discussing Richard Dawkins ' lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , Pratha Muthiah wrote a review of the speech in the Badger Herald. Here are a few excerpts: According to Dawkins, belief in the supernatural is a delusion and only the workings of nature can be considered divine. Dawkins described the idea of the “Supreme Watchmaker” — the argument that the intricacy of the universe necessitates a maker just as a watch does — as “one of the most superficial, plausible, bad arguments against Darwin.” Dawkins said religion can be replaced with science, since scientific study can effectively satisfy the same psychological need religion is said to fill. When asked what one message he wanted students to walk away with after Tuesday’s lecture, Dawkins said it was the importance of evidence and thinking for oneself. “Think critically for yourself,” Dawkins said. “Don’t believe what people tell you unless they give you ...

The Inspirational Richard Dawkins Speaks Tonight!
2008-03-11 21:49:00
Corey Sheahan, history and economics senior at University of Wisconsin-Madison wrote a great op-ed piece today in his school’s newspaper, The Badger Herald. In it he extends an invitation for all students to attend this evening’s (March 11, 2008) lecture by Richard Dawkins . Here are the first two paragraphs of the article: Tonight , University of Wisconsin welcomes professor Richard Dawkins to our campus as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series. Mr. Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, is best known in this country for his best-selling work, “The God Delusion.” I will be attending the lecture tonight, and I whole-heartedly encourage everyone — religious and non-religious people alike — to attend as well. While Mr. Dawkins is best known as an atheist, I suspect that if you asked him, the word “atheist’” would not be the first term he would use to describe himself. If you get anything from his lecture tonight, I hope you recognize that Mr. Dawkins is not a nihili...

Understanding Primate Evolution Could Aid HIV Research
2008-03-03 22:16:00
Yesterday my brother asked me a question I get asked all the time. He asked me, "What does it matter if people don’t believe in evolution?" Like most people his age, my brother is pretty neutral when it comes to things of religion. He has the philosophy "live and let live," and for the most part--I agree with him. However, to continue beating the same dead horse, I think it really does matter whether people accept the FACT of evolution (the THEORY is Natural Selection) or not. I won't ramble to much because I know I’m mostly preaching to the “atheist choir” here. I just want to bring your attention to a study submitted for peer review to the National Academy of Sciences. I know you intelligent design theists haven’t heard of “peer review.” Click HERE to read about it. The study basically reveals that our understanding of primate evolution could aid in our research of HIV. Here are the first and last paragraphs of an article about it from Sciencedaily.com: Evolution ...

Does Order In The Universe Provide Evidence of God?
2008-03-02 19:27:00
ABC News columnist, John Allen Paulos, writer of “Irreligion,” has written a wonderful article about the supposed order of the universe. He writes that many believers of creation science use this perceived order as evidence of a creator god. They ask, “How can this order and complexity arise out of nothing?” He points out that they use this argument while ignoring the question of how this ultra-complex being came into existence. Here is an excerpt: Because the seemingly inexplicable arising of order seems to be so critical to so many, however, I've decided to list here a few other sources for naturally occurring order in physics, math, and biology. Of course, order, complexity, entropy, randomness and related notions are clearly and utterly impossible to describe and disentangle in a column like this, but the examples below from "Irreligion" hint at some of the abstract ideas relevant to the arising of what has been called "order for free." Paulos goes on to list three ex...

American's are Losing Their Religion...Thank God!
2008-02-27 01:51:00
According to a new Pew Forum study, nearly half of American adults forsake the religion of their upbringing. While many of the 35,000 surveyed simply switch religious affiliation, several abandoned organized religion altogether. The study concluded that all religious demographics were gaining and losing membership. However, those who claim no religious affiliation had the most growth with three-to-one margins. While those labeling themselves as atheist or agnostic was only 4.0 percent, those who described themselves as having no religious association was 12.1 percent. Check out the survey results: (Here). Watch Pew Forum Director Luis Lugo discuss the survey below: Just think if we could organize simply half of that 16.1 percent. We are a larger group of voters than the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and Historically Black Churches combined! Any thoughts on how we can get over that “cat herding” thing? Brother Richard

Pat Robertson's Producer and Cocaine?
2008-02-19 15:29:00
In May of 2006, Theist broadcaster Pat Robertson claimed that he could leg-press 2,000 pounds (Article). Most experts said it was impossible. However, Robertson claimed that part of his strength came from his special vitamins and nutritional shakes (which he sold through his tax-exempt ministry). (Article) Well, it seems that we may now know what those “special vitamins” were. On Monday’s 700 Club, Robertson revealed that his producer's strength came from the ingestion of “paste of cocoa.” In case we might be confused, he said, “Not cocoa like hot chocolate, but cocoa like cocaine.” He went on to say, "As I understand, the distribution of cocaine and its derivatives are against the law." Intellegent Design Should Be Ridiculed!
2008-02-16 20:49:00
If you haven't done so already check out this great post from "The Green Atheist:" Why Do People Laugh at Creationists? These 11 videos do a great job crucifying the glib arguments ID Theists use against evolution. I've preached before (Here), that we can now only win this fight by ridiculing the opposition. There is NO debate. FACTS: 1. Evolution is a fact, the explanatory theory is called "Natural Selection." This is why the IDers now use the word "Darwinism" not evolution. 2. Intelligent Design is NOT a Scientific Theory. It is so bad that it's not even wrong! 3. The Theory of Evolution is not about how life began, but how it progressed once it began. The science of HOW life began, is called Abiogenesis. 4. There is no difference between Macro-Evolution and Micro-Evolution. You can not have one without the other. Sorry Kirk Cameron, there are NO scientists looking for a croc-o-duck! You idiot. 5. We have found literally millions of missing links and transitional f...
Who Would Darwin Vote For? Clinton, Obama, McCain, Huckabee?
2008-02-13 13:24:00
I consider myself an independent. I am somewhat libertarian, but usually end up voting Republican. Mainly because they are the guys pushing for a smaller government. So, like most conservative non-believers, I hold my nose and pull the lever (yes kiddies, there use to be levers) for an irrational theist. For the first time in my adult life, I voted in the Georgia primary for a democrat. I voted for Barack Obama . Yes, I know he lacks experience. Yes, I know he is the most liberal of the candidates. I debated all this myself. When I was looking at the candidates, and thinking about my past votes, it became clear that it didn't really matter who was in the White House. They all ended up pretty much the same. Except in one area, their appointments to the Supreme Court. If Bush Sr. (who I voted for) would have been reelected in 1992 we would no longer have a Supreme Court that valued the separation of church and state. America would be quite a bit different than it is today. Bill Cli...

There's Hope for America, If We Follow Britain's Example
2007-09-03 18:09:00
The web site, timesonline.co.uk, is reporting the results of a recent poll, concerning God and religion. The poll was commissioned by broadcaster and writer, John Humphrys, reported that nearly half (42%) of the 2,200 British polled, feel that religion is harmful. Almost in contrast, the poll also stated that half of the population believes in God “or something.” The numbers broke down as follows: “Only 16% of those polled called themselves atheists; 28% believed in God; 26% believed in “something” but were not sure what; and 9% regarded themselves as agnostics.” Excerpts: He (writes: “Even though the dominant faith - by a massive margin – is Christianity, only 17% thought the influence of religion was beneficial. That is even fewer than those who claim that they believe in a personal God. And yet when we asked which of the main religions was ‘most effective’ in getting its message across, most thought it was Christianity. Only 10% cited Islam compared with 32% ...

Follow Mother Teresa’s Example, Embrace Doubt
2007-08-30 16:20:00
Since the story broke last week, I have been writing an essay on the revelations of Mother Teresa’s lack of faith. Many other “non-believing” sites have posted the story, but I was trying to give it my own unique perspective. As I have shown (hopefully), I try not to wallow in other’s shortcomings. I try to focus on their beliefs and their ramifications on our world. I have decided to forgo my comments and point you to an essay written by Sam Harris. It is titled, “The Sacrifice of Reason,” and was posted yesterday on Newsweek’s and Washington Post’s, On Belief web site. I definitely recommend that you read the entire article (Click Here). A few excerpts: Humanity has had a long fascination with blood sacrifice. In fact, it has been by no means uncommon for a child to be born into this world only to be patiently and lovingly reared by religious maniacs who believe that the best way to keep the sun on its course or to ensure a rich harvest is to lead him by tender ...

I've Got To Be, An Atheist Man!
2007-08-30 02:37:00
Oh man, I just had to show you this picture made by the Atheist Hussy. If you haven't checked out her blog, you really should. (Click Here) How great is that? How many times have I gone on a tirade about "coming out" of the closet? The word atheist is so misunderstood by people, and like the word racist (which has become synonymous with the word bigot), has been redefined by modern culture. This is why I wish we could come up with a better word to describe ourselves. This originally was the purpose of the word Bright. However, it doesn't seem to be catching on and is often looked at as derogatory. I do wholeheartedly; support its definition according to http://the-brights.net: What is a bright? • A bright is a person who has a naturalistic worldview • A bright's worldview is free of supernatural and mystical elements • The ethics and actions of a bright are based on a naturalistic worldview After a new name, all we need is group like the Village People! I can see it now...

Scientists Create "Out-Of-Body" Experiences!
2007-08-27 20:02:00
A Times Online article is reporting on a British and Swedish study that has produced “out-of-body” experiences in research participants, by using virtual-reality goggles and tactile stimulations. This is another example of how we are learning the nature of consciousness and the tricks our brain plays on us. Some article highlights: “Out-of-body experiences have fascinated mankind for millennia,” he (Dr. Ehrsson) said. They raised fundamental questions about the relationship between human consciousness and the body, and had been much discussed in theology, philosophy and psychology. “Although out-of-body experiences have been reported in clinical conditions, the neuro-scientific basis of this phenomenon remains unclear. “The invention of this illusion is important because it reveals the basic mechanism that produces the feeling of being inside the physical body. This represents a significant advance . . . the experience of one’s own body as the centre of awareness is ...

Warn Your Family and Friends, Peter Popoff Is Back!
2007-08-22 17:10:00
Most skeptics have already heard of Peter Popoff. He was exposed as a fraud by James Randi on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Not long after his uncovering (1987), Popoff, declared bankruptcy. (Click Here for Randi Video). Well He’s back. If you don’t recognize him, Popoff is the televangelist who offers to send you a packet of Miracle Spring Water. By drinking this water—he claims—you will be physically healed or financially blessed. Thanks to our Meetup friend, Josh, for sending us this recent expose conducted by Inside Edition: If there is anyone in your family who is susceptible to crooks like Popoff, send them these videos. They need to be inoculated against this disease. On a lighter side (and speaking of skeptics), Dr. Michael Shermer appeared on the Colbert Report last night. It's pretty funny. CNN Reports on Religious Zealots, AKA: God's Warriors
2007-08-21 21:14:00
If you haven’t done so already, set your DVR to record tonight’s first episode of CNN’s series, “God’s Warrior s .” It airs from 9 to 11 pm (EST). The series will investigate the religious zealots from all three monotheistic faiths, and how they have impacted their religions. Each part of the three part series will focus on a different religion: Judaism (tonight), Islam (Wednesday), and Christianity (Thursday). Christiane Amanpour, CNN Chief International Correspondent, appeared on last night’s Larry King Live to discuss the series. Below is small portion from the transcripts: KING: Is each of the two hour specials, each of them devoted to one religion? AMANPOUR: Correct. Yes. And it's really surprising because -- for me it was surprising because on a daily basis, I report a lot about these issues, mostly in reaction to some of the terrible events that happen around the world. But then when you look deeper into it and you say, OK, violence is a symptom of a certain ...

Brother Richard, Are You Ready To Testify?
2007-08-20 16:04:00
I have been overwhelmed with emails concerning this site and my personal history. So I thought I would take a moment and give my “testimony.” I pretty much grew up a "heathen." My Mother was raised Catholic so occasionally we would attend Midnight Mass at Christmastime, and my Father was raised Methodist, so we went to a few Easter Sunrise Services. Other than that, I only walked into churches for weddings, funerals, and every once in a while, one of my cousin’s First Communion. I had an extreme "born again" religious conversion as a teenager. I had run away from home and was somewhat manically depressed. (although never diagnosed). On my return home, I found God—like many people do—watching religious television. Make no mistake; it was very much a “real” experience. I physically felt a change, and it saturated my entire life. I became one of those annoying Christians who passed out salvation tracks on the streets. I started going to a Charismatic (tongue speaking) c...

Demand The Southern Baptist Convention Condemn Rev. Wiley S. Drake!
2007-08-18 22:41:00
As a follow-up of yesterday’s post, I thought I should let you know the latest revelation about Rev. Drake , and give you some contact information for his associates at the Southern Baptist Convention . Below are a few quotes from the AU website: “Thanks to our friends in the blogosphere, we are learning more and more about the Rev. Wiley S. Drake, and it’s far from pretty. The Buena Park, Calif., pastor, who is urging supporters to pray for the demise of Americans United and its staff, is a radical character with alleged ties to some of our nation’s most extreme Religious Right operatives.” Drake called for “imprecatory prayers” (curses) against Americans United after we asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate his misuse of church resources to endorse Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. All nonprofits, including houses of worship, are barred from endorsing candidates for public office. Churches that do wade into electioneering place their tax ex...

Pastor Prays For God's Wrath to Fall on Critics
2007-08-17 17:10:00
Wiley S. Drake is calling upon God to smite two leaders of Americans United and has called for Christians to do the same. On Tuesday, Americans United called upon the IRS to investigate Drake for his endorsement of Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign. Drake as an individual can support any candidate he so chooses, but his endorsements were given on his church’s Internet radio show and in a letter written on church stationary. According to the IRS, this is a direct violation of the rules all tax-exempt organizations must follow. In the 90s Drake was given much media attention for protesting Disneyland’s “Gay Day,” and for speaking out against 2 Live Crew concerts. In 2006 he was elected as second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, which has 42,000 churches as members. Here are a few quotes from a LA Times article: "I have never have been worried about the IRS," he (Drake) said. "They don't scare me. I don't give a rip about the IRS. I don't beli...

Freethought Findings: A Bible Review and Richard Dawkins!
2007-08-15 05:33:00
I’ve got two great Freethought Findings for you this week. First, I came across Sam Jordison’s blog on Guardian Unlimited. Sam does a great job dealing with the Bible as literature—which we discussed last week (Here). He critics it solely on the premise of it being a good read—or not. I definitely recommend reading it (Here). Here are some snippets: “Contrary to popular belief, the Bible is not a good book…I'm talking about the book purely as one that an intelligent person may enjoy reading…” “The literary quality of the Bible is an issue that I think is worth addressing…The Good Book is not, as is so often suggested, a damn good read. It's crap. If the two Testaments tell the greatest story ever told, I am a monkey (and not just the distant descendant of one).” “…Can anyone honestly tell me that they enjoy reading all those lists of endless genealogies that take up such huge portions of the Old and such hefty chunks of the New Testaments? Has anyone...

Three More Christian Alternatives For Teens!

If home schooling, Christian rock, and Christian skateboarding aren’t enough to keep your child sheltered from this ungodly world, you now have three additional alternatives to aid you in your mission to “raise them in the way that they should go.” (Proverbs 22:6) If you are worried that Tommy will be exposed to some leftist commie propaganda every time he does research on Wikipedia, you now have a Christian alternative: Conservapedia. Homosexual Teens Warned to Delay Their Coming Out Decision.
2007-08-11 15:00:00
While the Democratic presidential candidates attempted to straddle the fence on gay and lesbian issues (Article), and Aussie, Anne Davies, of The Sydney Morning Herald wrote, “You can be gay, black or even a woman, but America will not tolerate a president who has no religion” (Article), The Online NewsHour reported on an interesting study about teen-age homosexuality. (Article) Apparently, many homosexual teens are coming out to their friends and family at a much younger age—and to a much more accepting environment. Two decades ago, many waited until their mid-20s to come out, but now teens are coming out as early as 14 and 15. The article says that the growing acceptance of homosexuality is due to the “…greater accessibility of information from the Internet, TV and people's peers.” Nearly six in ten people aged 16-25 said it should be accepted by society. As opposed to only 50% of those 25 and older. Conservative groups are very concerned and feel that the media is...

PBS To Air Dover Intelligent Design Trial! Mark Your Calendar NOW!
2007-08-10 03:59:00
On November 13, 2007 at 8 pm ET, PBS will air a two hour special called “Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial .” It will be the subject of the usually one hour Nova broadcast. In 2004 the small town of Dover Pennsylvania was the center of the war between Evolution and Intelligent Design (ID). Both sides put their scientists on the stand and were given ample opportunity to present their side of the debate. The verdict of Judge John E. Jones III was that ID was unconstitutional. The Nova episode will feature interviews by trial participants and observers, and feature a re-enactment of key moments of the trial based on transcripts of the hearings. I could not be more pleased with this announcement. Just a few days ago I stated that the Dover trial did for Intelligent Design what the Scopes Trial did for Creationism. I even complained that it didn’t get equal media attention. Finally, my prayers have been answered! Help me make sure this show gets the attention it deserve...
