Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Daily Manna from the Net for Thursday , September 27, 2007Posted: Fri Sep 28, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you--even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.' Acts 3:19-23 NIV Listen (MP3) Read more... Inspiration & Devotionals :: Beauty in Brokenness
2007-09-26 10:00:00
Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Beauty in BrokennessPosted: Wed Sep 26, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Beauty in Brokenness Margaret Manning Recently, I attended a retreat where there was a great deal of personal sharing. I sat amazed as I listened to women from every walk of life, most of whom were established Christians, share of heartache, pain, and various aspects of struggle they had either just come through, or were currently experiencing. I was overwhelmed by their honesty and by the poignancy of their stories. But even more than this, I was overwhelmed by the beauty radiating from within as they shared their stories. Beauty in brokenness? Without glorifying suffering, there is an unexpected beauty that can shine through stories of struggle. One friend is a paraplegic broken in the use of her body, and yet she has a beautiful spirit. Not limited by her brokenness, she uses her own difficulties to help others, and teach others about true ability and disability. Tony Snow, th...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Who Shall Consider It?Posted: Wed Sep 26, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Who Shall Consider It? Jill Carattini For his fluency with words and unrivaled poetic voice, Isaiah has been called the "Shakespeare of the prophets." His words are assuredly lyrical; they were also political and prophetic, enduring well beyond his life. Unquestionably, the prophet fulfilled the call of God with conviction. But as it is with all that God calls us to do and do whole-heartedly, it is God's voice that reverberates in creative ways unknown even to the one called, at times beyond our own understanding, beyond our own lives. The 53rd chapter of the book of Isaiah offers the image of a servant who embodies a severe faithfulness despite unjust opposition. "He was oppressed and he was afflicted," writes Isaiah, "but he did not open his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7). The prophet describes a sufferer of flint-like submission in the face of extreme viole...

And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Author: Eric Subject: Creationists Meet , Settle DifferencesPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2007 7:02 am (GMT -4) Creationists Meet, Settle Differences Kevin Eigelbach Two leading creationism advocates, including Boone County's Answers in Genesis, have decided to settle their differences like Christians. Rather than fight in court, last month the board of Answers in Genesis and Creation Ministries International met in Hawaii and reached a tentative agreement to settle the lawsuit they're parties to. "We feel very, very satisfied about it," CMI Managing Director Carl Wieland said. "We were pleased to end it this way, and glad to have had the chance to have face-to-face communication." The two organizations hope to have a final, written agreement by mid-October, Wieland said. Answers spokeswoman Melany Ethridge was not able to get a statement from the Answers in Genesis leadership about the proposed settlement in time for inclusion in this story. The two o...

The convoy with eight staff members was attacked Thursday some 25 miles south of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, the United Nations reported, according to The Associated Press. Among the three wounded aid workers – all of whom were Sudanese – two were shot in the head and one in the arm. World Vision informed AP that two are in stable condition, while one is in serious condition. “This is a horrifying and brutal attack on aid staff who are working to save the lives of Sudanese people,” U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes said. The attackers have not been identified but the United Nations did note that Arab tribes have had frequent clashes...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Dreaming of Water Posted: Sun Sep 23, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Dreaming of Water Jill Carattini Every so often I am too tired to yield to pangs of thirst, and get myself a glass of water before going to sleep for the night. And it is often on these nights that I have the most frustrating dreams (and unsettled sleep). Whether I'm driving through the countryside or solving crimes in Washington, D.C., the events in my dreams carry on as usual. But amidst moving scenes and thickening plots, I am continually stopping to gulp down glass after glass of water. I have even stopped dream conversations in mid-sentence to tell the person I am talking to that I just can't seem to get enough water. Upon waking the frustrated lesson is palpable. I couldn't dream my thirst away because my body knew it was real. Apparently such dreams and the dreamers they frustrate are not uncommon. Centuries before me, the prophet Isaiah described them perfectly. "...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Artful WaysPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Artful Ways Ravi Zacharias Those of you who have seen Barcelona's Temple Sagrada Familia know how very difficult it is to describe to those who have not. The architect at whose feet the acclaim is laid for this gargantuan eighteenth-century cathedral was the renowned Antoni Gaudi. There are twelve bell towers, averaging three hundred feet in height, and six domes, the highest of them eventually culminated in a 550 foot cross. As for the massive facades, the artwork gets so cluttered and detailed that it is impossible to study it without a book and even a magnifying glass. One stands rather dumbfounded by the sheer imposition upon the eye in the midst of such garish grandeur. If size is beauty, everything in the vicinity of it is ugly. If architecture is supreme, everything around it pales. If the test behind it were biblical, the amalgam of the sacred and the profane is dreadful. If beauty...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: The Dead Don't Bleed Posted: Sun Sep 23, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) The D ead Don't Bleed Jill Carattini For one family in Venezuela, the space between death and life is filled with more shock than usual. After a serious car accident, Carlos Camejo was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials released the body to the morgue and a routine autopsy was ordered. But as soon as examiners began the autopsy, they realized something was gravely amiss: the body was bleeding. Without anesthesia, they quickly stitched up the wounds to stop the bleeding, a procedure, in turn, that jarred the man awake. "I woke up because the pain was unbearable," said Camejo. Equally jarred awake was Camejo's wife, who came to the morgue to identify her husband's body and instead found him in the hallway--alive. Saturated with images from countless forensic television shows, the scene comes vividly to life. But equally vivid is the scientific principle utilized...

Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Author: Eric Subject: Confessing to 'Sins' is Booming in America Posted: Sat Sep 22, 2007 9:42 pm (GMT -4) Confessing to 'Sins' is Booming in America Tom Leonard Americans are flocking to confess their sins as Protestant churches have joined their Catholic counterparts in modernising the sacrament of penance. Thousands of people are attending confession at weekends and just as many are posting their repentance on videos that are played back to congregations or shared on websites such as YouTube. New technology is fuelling the boom, but so is clever marketing by Churches that are portraying confession as a form of self-improvement — always popular with Americans — rather than some sort of punishment. Church leaders also attribute the boom to the fashion for self-analysis peddled by daytime television programmes such as The Jerry Springer Show and to a wider theological trend in which Christians are looking for firmer moral guidance. Some Protestant churches are tr...

Author: Eric Subject: Authorities Threaten to Deport Homeschooling MissionariesPosted: Sat Sep 22, 2007 9:39 pm (GMT -4) Authorities Threaten to Deport Homeschooling Missionaries German officials appear to be more determined than ever to rid their country of influences that may contribute to the rise of what they call Parallelgesellschaften, parallel societies. Never mind that Germany has hundreds of thousands of genuinely truant youth hanging around street corners; school officials have determined that parents diligently educating their children at home are a greater danger to German society. Now it would seem that German officials are not content to go after their own citizens, but are also targeting American missionaries who homeschool. Mr. Clint Robinson, his wife Susan and their three children came to Germany March 2, 2007. They had sold their possessions and left the United States to serve the Lord as missionaries. Initially, they were to work with the Bachmans, fellow ...

Churches within the PC(USA), the nation's largest Presbyterian body, have "hit the wall" and "come to the end of the string," seeking new directions amid a growing exodus from the denomination. "It is as if a tsunami of change has hit us," said Joan Gray, moderator of the General Assembly during a Sept. 17-21 GAC (General Assembly Council) meeting in Louisville, Ky., according to the Presbyterian News Service. "I recently spent time in the Midwest, and these areas are drying up. The people are not there any more. In Detroit, 3,000 people a day are leaving to emigrate elsewhere. Author: Eric Subject: UK Christians Worry About Implications of New Equality LawsPosted: Sat Sep 22, 2007 6:28 am (GMT -4) UK Christians Worry About Implications of New Equality Laws Kevin McCandless London (CNSNews .com) - Christian groups here are warning that proposed new equality laws could wreak havoc on British churches and lead to the further secularization of society. As part of its efforts to streamline decades' worth of anti-discrimination law, the British government is currently drawing up a new Single Equality Bill, which is expected to come before parliament soon. Having studied draft proposals released earlier this year, the (Anglican/Episcopalian) Church of England said in a formal response that the new laws could be twisted and turned against religious charities that operate in the public sector. For example, it charged that charities might be accused of harassment if they displayed crucifixes on their walls or said grace before meals. In other areas...

Floods that swept across low-lying Bangladesh for nearly a month are receding, but thousands of people are still living in makeshift homes. Two and a half million others have also been displaced or marooned by rising river waters. The additional loss of over two million acres of crop land means that those affected by the monsoon rains will reach upwards of 20 million people. I.N. Buckner International responded quickly to the quake and delivered 800 blankets, shoes, socks, underwear and diapers to the displaced in the provinces of Chinca and Canete, located south of Lima. Leslie Chace, director of Latin American Ministries, accompanied Buckner staff in Peru and government representatives from the Ministry of Women and Social Work to distribute the aid among hundreds of children and families living in displacement camps. Almost all the homes in this region were destroyed. "It was so shocking and sad to see the children and the elderly, all starving for love," Chace said. Without them, illiteracy and poverty reign in many places. CURE International's Lisa Wolf says they're fighting that with the concept of "teaching hospitals." "So many of the countries suffer from 'brain drain,' particularly with their medical professionals. They don't have the equipment that they need, and they don't have the resources. We're providing those resources and providing the training. And because they have a terrific hospital to work at--one that is taking care of both physical and spiritual needs--they want to stay." Living Water International recently repaired five hand pumps and established three new pumps in IDP camps in the Gulu region. In one area they had only three pumps for the 7,000 remaining people. Two of the pumps were broken, and the other was contaminated. "What is truth?" and "How can we know Christianity is the true religion?" are two questions that Dale Fincher, author of the newly released Living with Questions, frequently comes across in his ministry career. Fincher is offering students a softer approach to apologetics, a reading that doesn't sound academic and that's more accessible to younger Christians and those seeking answers about Christianity. "I really sensed there was this world out there that needed to wrestle with these questions and get honest with themselves [about] them," he said, according to Youth Specialties, which supports Christian youth workers across various denominations. ...

Author: Eric Subject: Study : Men Lack Church SupportPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:00 pm (GMT -4) Study: Men Lack Church Support Audrey Barrick The majority of men in the United Methodist Church attend worship service almost every week but most feel they lack support from friends and from the pulpit, a new report revealed. With churches struggling to keep men in the pews and women more likely than men to attend church, the Commission on United Methodist Men conducted the Study of Men report, surveying 1,350 people –a sample reflecting the demographics of the total number of men in the United Methodist Church. The top reason why the church doesn't reach many men is a lack of interest in religion, survey respondents said they believe. They also listed "societal emphasis on individualism/materialism" and "distrust of organized religion" as common reasons churches struggle to reach men. Despite wider church trends of fewer men in attendance than women, the...

Author: Eric Subject: Baylor University Administration Silencing Science by DesignPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2007 7:52 pm (GMT -4) BU Administration Silencing Science by Design Walt Ruloff It may sound like a crazy question, but it needs to be asked: Does the administration at Baylor believe in God? This is a legitimate question in light of the university's heavy-handed actions in shutting down the research Web site of Dr. Robert Marks. As many of you have heard, Marks, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been conducting research that ultimately may challenge the foundation of Darwinian theory. In layman's terms, Marks is using highly sophisticated mathematical and computational techniques to determine if there are limits to what natural selection can do. At Baylor, a Christian institution, this should be pretty unremarkable stuff. I'm assuming most of the faculty, students and alumni believe in God, so wouldn't it also be safe to assu...

More than half the Americans who might have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversaries since 2000 were either divorced, separated or widowed, according to a census survey released today. For the first time at least since World War II, married people had a less than even chance of still being married 25 years later. The latest survey by the Census Bureau confirmed that most Americans eventually marry, but they are marrying later and are less likely to be wed only once. Those trends continued, although the proportion who have ever been divorced, about one in five, remained constant. “Basically, it looks like we’re pretty much holding steady,” said Rose Kreieder, a Census Bureau demographer. “There are not radical differences.” Among people ...

India Partners is fighting one of those preventable causes--starvation. Reuters reported this year that the hunger rate in India has now exceeded that of sub-Saharan Africa. That's why India Partners kicked off the Hungry Child Project this year by providing 50 children with lunch five days a week for a year, even during school holidays. The children receiving the meals attend a Christian school run by Orphan's Faith Home, a ministry associated with India Partners. Though many of the children are not Christians, Brent Hample of India Partners says the food is a stepping stone to faith.
