2007-09-19 22:57:00
Author: Eric Subject: Bible s Still Coming in from National Bible Drive Posted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:57 pm (GMT -4) Bibles Still Coming in from National Bible Drive USA (MNN) ― Love Packages' first-ever national Bible drive is still getting response. Last month, Love Packages' Steve Schmidt said they were trying to get churches across the United States to do a Bible drive. Christians were encouraged to donate unused, extra Bibles to Love Packages for use in the under-resourced Third World Church. "I would expect that, before the end of the year, from the August Bible drive we're going to get close to our goal of 200,000. We have Bibles coming in everyday. We have people bringing them in by the carloads (and) truckloads." Each container they send overseas contains 1 million pieces of literature. It gets into the hands of Christians because of partnerships, Schmidt explains. "We've set up distribution points, different places in the world with Every ...

Author: Eric Subject: Pakistani Christian Unexpectedly Acquitted of BlasphemyPosted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:51 pm (GMT -4) Pakistani Christian Unexpectedly Acquitted of Blasphemy Charges Pakistan (MNN) ― Two days ago, a lower court in Faisalabad, Pakistan unexpectedly acquitted Shahid Masih of blasphemy. What's unusual is that the lower courts of Pakistan rarely acquit "blasphemy" suspects. The case stems from an accusation made by a Muslim teenager, Muhammad Ghaffar, on September 10, 2006. Ghaffar claimed he saw Masih rip up pages containing verses from the Quran during a theft of books from a medical clinic in Madina Town district of Faisalabad. The court cleared the case after prosecution witnesses changed their original testimonies. Voice of the Martyrs' Todd Nettleton says it's an answer to prayer. "It gives hope to the Christians in Pakistan that they have the opportunity for some kind of a just verdict even early on in the case without going t...

Author: Eric Subject: Home Schooling a Viable Option; May Be Easier than You ThinkPosted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:43 pm (GMT -4) Home Schooling a Viable Option; It May Be Easier than You Think, Says Attorney Rusty Pugh An advocate for the removal of children from secular, public schools says parents who truly desire to get their children away from homosexual indoctrination, drugs, violence and other anti-biblical influences should seriously consider home schooling -- because it's much easier to home school than most people think, he counsels. Bruce Shortt, an attorney who has written volumes on the ills of the public school system, advocates pulling all children out of the secular, government-run schools, and placing them in Christian schools or home-schooling them. According to Shortt, the common objection to home schooling is a fear of not knowing how to teach. He acknowledges home schooling may have been a challenge 20 or 30 years ago -- but argues that is not the case today....

2007-09-19 10:00:00
Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Days of Devotion Posted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Days of Devotion Margaret Manning September is a very important month for Jews and Muslims. For Jews, September contains two of their most high, holy days: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In the original language, Rosh Hashanah means "new year" and Yom Kippur means "day of atonement." What do these days entail for Jews? This is a time for serious introspection, a time to consider the sins of the previous year and repent before Yom Kippur. The ten days starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur are commonly known as the Days of Awe (Yamim Noraim) or the Days of Repentance.(1) These "Days of Awe" are filled with wonder and worship, days of reflection, fasting and prayer, days of solemnity and solace. These are days meant to set the tone for the rest of the year even as they remind Jews to reflect on what has gone before. Among the customs of this...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Where the Light is Strong Posted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Where the Light is Strong Jill Carattini A classic variety show routine begins with a pitch-black theater except for a large circle of light coming from a street lamp. In the spotlight, a man is on his knees, crawling with his hands in front of him, carefully probing the lighted circle. After a few moments a policeman walks on stage. Seeing the man on all fours, he poses the obvious question: "Did you lose some¬thing?" "Yes," the man replies. "I have lost my keys." Kindly, the police officer joins the man's search, and two figures now circle the lighted area on hands and knees. But after some time, the officer stops. "Are you absolutely certain this is where you lost your keys? We've covered every inch." "Why no," the man replies matter-of-factly, pointing to a darkened corner. "I lost them over there." The p...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: The Power of Pray er Posted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) The Power of Prayer Jill Carattini Researchers have stumbled onto a subject that has long been tested, though perhaps never before quite so clinically. Over the last decade, millions of dollars have been spent on testing the effects of prayer in the field of medicine. The studies, which have targeted an assortment of medical conditions and religious traditions, have attracted criticism from all over the place. Some argue that science has no place exploring matters of religion. Others note the impossibility of creating a controlled environment or securing viable results. Still others argue these experiments at the outset have a faulty understanding of both God and prayer. The opinions of those conducting the studies are equally varied. One scientist insists the tests are meant to answer practical questions and not religious ones; another thanks God in the official report of his findin...

Author: Eric Subject: Debate Pits 'New Atheist' Against Christian ApologistPosted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 12:05 am (GMT -4) God Delusion Debate Pits 'New Atheist' Against Christian Apologist Nathan Black Staunch atheist Richard Dawkins of The New York Times bestseller The God Delusion will square off in a debate with popular Christian apologist John Lennox next month. The Oct. 3 debate, which takes place at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, Ala., will tackle one of the world’s most critical and age-old questions – Does God exist? – and views expressed in Dawkins' latest book. Dawkins, labeled by BBC as "Darwin's Rottweiler," is a prominent spokesman for the "New Atheism." The once silent and ignored atheist minority has emerged as a vocal, insistent bunch that doesn’t just want to deny the existence of God, but wipe religion off the map, as prominent evangelical Chuck Colson put it. In the past two years, five books touting atheism have hit be...

U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle, Sr., on Monday gave Aurora officials 24 hours to file a response to a request from Planned Parenthood/Chicago Area (PPCA) for an injunction that would have forced the city to allow the new building to open on Tuesday as planned. In addition, Norgle gave PPCA another 24 hours to file its response to the information provided by city officials, and he set a hearing for Thursday morning, when he is expected to rule on the issue. Measures are being taken to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Already, more than 150 people have died in the central province of Kasai Occidental. Ebola is one of the deadliest pathogens, killing 50 to 80 percent of the people it infects. Because it is highly contagious, health officials in Congo are trying to quarantine anyone with symptoms, and there's an ongoing media campaign to educate villagers about the crisis. 1995 marked Congo's last major Ebola outbreak in Kikwit. Then it killed 250 people in an area about 250 miles west of the current outbreak. The movement of the people in the bush is complicating efforts to quarantine the infected, and that...

Author: Eric Subject: The Gospel is Moving Toward a People Group in GhanaPosted: Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:45 pm (GMT -4) The Gospel is Moving Toward a People Group in Ghana Ghana (MNN) ― The Wycliffe Bible Translation team working with the Ahanta in Ghana has finished the New Testament consultant checks and the JESUS film dubbing. The Ahanta are found east of the Nzema in the southwest, occupying the area between Cape Three Points and the Pra River. According to SIL, their literacy rate is below 1% in a first language, slightly jumping in a second language to anywhere between 5% to 15%. That makes getting the Gospel to this people group a challenge. The team is hoping the manuscript will be ready for typesetting within the next couple of months. There are roughly 140,000 Ahanta speakers. Pray that those who see the JESUS film will respond in faith and obedience. Pray, too, for a God-honoring dedication celebration in 2008. "I'm here to support Jesus Christ and being able to pray in his name," said Aaron Schotsch, 39. "So many of our rights are being taken away all the time. Everybody's trying to make everything politically correct." The procession was solemn and quiet. Demonstrators were told not to bring banners nor signs, but they spanned several blocks. In particular, the West African nation of Nigeria is experiencing the fastest growth in Christianity in Africa with Pentecostal churches playing a large role in this development. Nigeria is said to have the world’s third largest population of Pentecostals with 3.9 million members, following Brazil with 24 million and the United States with about 6 million adherents, according to the World Christian database. Already, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has directed officials to initiate strict action against all those who disrupt law and order and destroy public properties. According to GFA, over the next five years, the Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) leader, Mayawati Naina Kumari, is promising to increase education for Dalits, maintain religious freedom, and uphold their justice. In his new book, Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn't, Robert Spencer, who is director of Jihad Watch, says that the war on terror is in fact a struggle against an Islamic jihad that would conquer and subjugate Western non-Muslims. He also asserts that Islam is well on its way to taking over Europe because the population has been silent for too long. "It looks as if the problem as advanced far beyond the point of any kind of peaceful or easy resolution," he explains. "Europe is either going to acquiesce in its Islamization and in the imposition of Islamic Sharia law...

Back in 1989, 12 Christian students met in a small apartment at College Station, home to Texas A&M University. Those weekly Bible studies were the beginning of a ministry known as "Breakaway." Now, each Tuesday thousands of students fill the university's basketball arena for Bible study, worship, and prayer. Ben Stuart, director of the ministry, says for many students it is a safe introduction to the claims of Christ. "So a lot of students will bring their friends to Breakaway, and we kind of think of it as the big end of the funnel. We kind of receive a lot of students, they will come and investigate the faith," he says. "And then...

Behe A Series of Eyes How do we see? In the 19th century the anatomy of the eye was known in great detail and the sophisticated mechanisms it employs to deliver an accurate picture of the outside world astounded everyone who was familiar with them. Scientists of the 19th century correctly observed that if a person were so unfortunate as to be missing one of the eye's many integrated features, such as the lens, or iris, or ocular muscles, the inevitable result would be a severe loss of vision or outright blindness. Thus it was concluded that the eye could only function if it were nearly intact. As Charles Darwin was considering possible objections to his theory of evolution by natural selection in The Origin of Species he discussed the problem of the eye in a section of the book app...

Last week's unanimous ruling by the Texas Supreme Court overturned two lower-court opinions and a Texas law that gave the state power over seminaries and their training of pastors and ministry leaders. Liberty Legal Institute (LLI) filed a lawsuit on behalf of Tyndale Theological Seminary in 1999, after the state's higher education coordinating board threatened to fine the seminary thousands of dollars as punishment for issuing theological degrees without seeking government approval of its curriculum, professors, and board. Kelly Shackelford, president of LLI, says the justices' ruling on Friday was clear. "What the court said, 8-to-0, is I think true -- which is that really ...

The agreement caps more than four years of negotiations in state and federal courts. Earlier this year, the diocese abruptly filed for bankruptcy protection just hours before trial was scheduled to begin on 42 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse. Bankruptcy could shield the diocese's assets, but a judge recently threatened to throw out the bankruptcy case if church officials didn't reach an agreement with the plaintiffs. The San Diego diocese initially offered about $95 million to settle the claims. The victims were seeking about $200 million. The Single Equality Bill could force vicars to conduct weddings for sex-change brides, deprive Christians of the right to oppose homosexuality and make church schools promote gay lifestyles in lessons, said the Archbishops' Council. Church charities may also be barred from saying grace before meals or displaying crucifixes, it claimed. The CofE document - endorsed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams - warned that the Bill attempts to suppress freedom of speech and "amounts to an enforced secularism that fails to respect religious belief at all". Until then, the group had lived in fear of evil spirits, and most of them had killed at least one other person. The new believers became very motivated to help others.
