Conversion, sometimes dubbed "sheep-stealing" as it targets another's flock, is a cause of friction and conflict between religions and among different branches of individual faiths. Militant groups are often accused of underhand tactics in winning over new adherents. The Geneva-based WCC, working with the Vatican on the issue, said a meeting in Toulouse later this week should bring the year-long process of agreeing a conversion rule-book nearer to completion by its target date of 2009. The decision by Bill Mills was backed by the town council of Truro, Nova Scotia, with a 6-1 vote Friday, reported the Canadian television network CTV. "There are writings in the book of Romans chapter one, to name a few – basically I have to go with that conviction, and I know it's not a popular one," said Mills, who leads a town of about 12,000 people. Mills contended he had a right to his opinion, but a local homosexual activist group called the decision a sign of homophobia in a government that should be secular. The enemy? Pornography. It is a cancer eating away at the souls of millions of men, women, and children at this very hour. Unless this virulent disease can be stopped and defeated once and for all, it will lead this nation into a moral disaster from which we may never recover. The words on the cover of the February 10, 1997, edition of U.S. News & World Report provide a glimpse of the problem: "America is by far the world’s leading producer of porn, churning out hard-core videos at the astonishing rate of about 150 new titles per week." Hamtramck, Michigan, made news in 2004 when the city council passed an ordinance allowing Muslims to broadcast calls for prayer over loudspeakers in the community. Now Hamtramck has four Muslims seeking city council posts. If all are victorious, they would join one incumbent Muslim council member to control five of the six council seats. Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, a project of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, is concerned over this upcoming election. He believes the Muslims are emboldened in the city and would impose their laws on everyone else in the community. "The fact that th... More About: News , Events , Current Events , Current

The weeklong biennial gathering in Chicago convenes more than 1,000 members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the nation's largest Lutheran denomination, who will confront the issue of human sexuality years earlier than originally planned for. The ELCA will continue its conversation on human sexuality and "the place of gay and lesbian people in ministry" although "we are still in the process of developing our social statement on human sexuality," ELCA presiding bishop the Rev. The Cuban people live in abject poverty, and the larger faith communities have faced intense opposition amidst claims of theoretical religious rights. At the same time, World Serve's Cuba Director Darryl Wright says their team is reaping a harvest of revival amongst the evangelical church. "It began to accelerate into a house church movement. There were about 1100 churches and house churches in 1990, and today, they're drawing close to 17,000 churches and house churches. That's revival." Joseph Parker is pastor of Campbell Chapel AME Church in Pulaski, Tennessee, birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan. Parker says most blacks would agree that the Klan is viewed as the number-one enemy of blacks. The containers were filled with brightly colored bathtub toys bound for the United States. Janice Shaw Crouse Newly-released data indicates great news about the nation's children –– girls aged 10-14 –– are not getting pregnant nearly as often as they did just a few years ago. This is further evidence that abstinence programs are having an impact, that they are making a difference for teens –– including children as young as 10 years of age. How can anyone hesitate to recommend abstinence for children? How, in good conscience, can a supposedly-responsible adult support public policies that would communicate to such girls and boys that "safe-sex" is an appropriate option? Even if pregnancy were not a consideration, youngsters are not physically or psychologically ready for sexual activity. Even if morality were not an issue, the earlier a child begins sexual activity, the more partners he or she will have... More About: News , Events , Current Events , Current

We are amazed at the splendid lifelike sculptures of the Greeks and Romans; we delight in the magnificent music, paintings, and sculptures of the Renaissance; we are stirred by the probing insight and splendid detail of the Dutch Masters; and inspired by the imagination and joie de vivre of the Impressionists. We can appreciate the playful insolence of Pablo Picasso, Salvadore Dali, and Piet Mondrian, and also the edgy taunts of Claes Oldenburg, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein. But there is a point at which taste, like common sense, has its limits. Art that inspires, challenges, and uplifts the soul has a rich history and deep significance in the American experience; but inspiring and uplifting art has been in very short supply the last fif... The Bush administration is pushing what should be an obvious policy change to help those most acutely in need — victims of catastrophe or some other emergency. Instead of shipping American-grown food abroad, Washington would send American dollars to buy food from local farmers. The present food aid system is a favorite of American farmers. But it is also cumbersome, slow, expensive and leaves people hungry who could easily be fed. President Bush has rightly proposed shifting $300 million from farm subsidies to enable governments and relief groups to buy food locally. This plan struck a responsive chord almost everywhere except the Congress. The House omitted the idea from the farm bill it passed last week. And prospects for the Senate approving anything more t...
