Once upon a Friday the 13th....
2007-11-13 19:26:00 ...my mother in law was born! Well, today isn't Friday the 13th (which we do on occasion get a chance to tease her about) but it is still her birthday so I thought I would share thirteen reasons I love our Oma!1) of course #1 has to be that she shared her son with me whom I love VERY, VERY, VERY much!2) she introduced my children to authors I had never even heard of and they all love to read3) she loves me enough to tell me the truth, even if it hurts, and still tells me she loves me4) she takes time for all of the grandchildren and makes them feel special5) she gives great gifts6) on occasion she lets me pay for the Starbucks :-)7) she still has tea parties with her grandchildren, even the teen ones8) she looks great for her age!!9) she buys really cool glasses for people to wear on their birthdays (I got to see the world through rose colored glasses this past summer!!!!) 10) she spent at least 4 hours in an antique store with my daughter this summer and promised to take me next t... Monday Meanderings -- A Day Late...
2007-11-13 14:59:00 OOPS... I'm a day late... I just forgot with my honey being home yesterday for Veterans Day.. God bless, all! 1) HOMESCHOOL I am always working on keeping this organized better. I like what we are using and am happy with our routine for the most part. It's just a constant work in progress :-) Practice piano, guitar, and we really need to find a good video program for drum. We haven't had luck finding a teacher for this and the video we have isn't very good. Take Victoria to Constitution class and hopefully get our question this week for the end of class scholarship program! We need to get started on our papers but the teacher is dragging his feet a bit. 2) FELLOWSHIP/BIBLE Bake/buy and bag cookies for church visitation (weekly item). Prepare lesson and felt board for AWANA. 3) HOME CLEANING -- Monday : laundry -- found a system that works: hampers for dirty clothes and baskets for each person for putting their own clothes away. WOO HOO! I really hate folded laundry piles just... More About: Late , Erin
in a funk...
2007-11-12 23:58:00 Today has just been one of those days. You know the kind I bet. I just can't seem to pull myself up out of the doldrums to want to do anything at all to make it a worthwhile day. It started yesterday afternoon and though I've tried reading and doing other things, the "funk" seems to have set in and won for today. Yesterday we had a youth meeting after church. We talked about fundraising for camp, and all the "fun" events we are gonna be doing. I asked what service oriented things were planned. People did not even get it. They thought I meant leading the service at church. I had to explain I meant "what are we going to take our teens to do to help in our community?" The answer? You put something together and we'll see what we can do. I'm not the paid youth minister. If he can take the time to put together fun things, why can't he put together service things? It just depressed me that even the parents only seemed to care about the fun stuff and gett... More About: Funk
Letters From War
2007-11-12 23:15:00 The first time I ever heard this song was at our Uncle Mike's church in Houston several years ago. It was a 4th of July service and all of the Veterans were recognized. It touched me... I have a stack of letters from war. My husband thinks I could save us weight upon moving if I just get rid of all the paper "stuff". Sorry, hon.. can't do it... at least not that particular stack. Thank you to everyone who has served or serves! God bless!Tags: Veterans Day, Letters From War
In Flanders Fields
2007-11-12 17:50:00 In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.Dr. John McCrae wrote the poem during World War 1. He was a Canadian military surgeon and he died from pneumonia and meningitis while still working in a field hospital during the war at the age of 45.

Happy Birthday, Marines!!
2007-11-10 18:26:00 From the halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea, First to fight for right and freedom , And to keep our honor clean, We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marines . Our flags unfurl'd to every breeze From dawn to setting sun. We have fought in every clime and place Where we could take a gun. In the snow of far-off northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes, You will find us always on the job - The United States Marines. Here's health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve; In many a strife we've fought for life And never lost our nerve. If the Army and the Navy Ever gaze on Heaven's scenes, They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines. image courtesy of Leatherneck.com More About: Happy , Birthday , Happy Birthday

Woo Hoo!! Family Time!!
2007-11-09 18:10:00 The Ball was last night and it was ok... Truthfully, I wasn't impressed. Our command is the largest on base and last year they decided to split it between two nights so they could have it at The Club. There were complaints about that I guess and so they decided to rent out the community Civic Center for the ball. OK! Terrible, terrible, terrible idea!! I think my high school prom was better than the ball last night. I've seen the center done up nice so I guess I was expecting that last night too. There are so many things that could have been done to make the decor right for the night but instead we had multi-colored balloons as centerpieces for our white plastic tables with metal folding chairs. I did have fun with my husband though and it is always nice to get dressed up and go out on a special date! Also, I had a few girls come up and tell me I looked so elegant and asked if they could take a picture with me. That was a nice kind surprise, but it does seem the dresses are gettin... a sneak peak at my dress for the Ball
2007-11-08 00:16:00 Like I said on Monday, I had to have it tailored because the top was so big on me I had cleavage to the bellybutton going on and that WOULD NOT work for me! LOL... It is the silver one, though it's a bit darker than it looks. I loved the train on it and I loved the sash thing in the front that hangs all the way to the floor. It hides a multitude of sins ;-) We'll take pics tomorrow night and have pics made at the ball and put them on later.. I never get tired of this! It is so much fun to get dressed up so formally and go out!Tags: Ball Gown, Marine Corps Ball More About: Dress , Peak
ok... last ditch effort
2007-11-07 23:19:00 Alrighty then.. I'll give this one last valiant effort to grab a vote for the 2007 web blog awards (NOT to be confused with the homeschool blog awards for which I will happily -- and beggingly -- still take nominations for)! I am in the running for best of the 2500 to 3500 level of the eco system. OK, let me say LOSER again.. Oh, ok, I'm kidding but really, top 10 out of 2500 to 3500 still puts ya in the 2500 to 3500 range. Am I right? Well, I'd still like to not be in last place... which I am... so please go vote for me. Do the " tell 10 friends to tell 10 of their friends and so on thing" too. Ok, NOW, I know I'm pathetic. And someone at another blog said I was competition. HA! Double HAHA!! http://2007.weblogawards.org/polls/best-o f-the-top-2501-3500-blogs-1.php ..click on the link and then click on the radio button next to Everyday Me!!Thanks Ya'll!!

military life
2007-11-07 16:17:00 One of the most difficult portions of military life is the lack of closeness to extended family. We have never been fortunate in our military career to live closer that at least a good days drive (and most are about three days away) to any family. We visit as often as we can but sometimes deployments, finances, and schedules just don't permit for face to face visits. We try to communicate through emails, occasional letters/cards, or phone calls. Still, though, there are times when you feel like family is nothing more than an acquaintance. This is so hard for me to come to grips with. We have always taught our children that no matter what, you can count on family because they will always be there. You share prayer requests with each other, you share memories and a history together that no one can fathom. Yet, sometimes there is a deafening silence from every direction. That is something that you just don't expect. I miss having family close by. I miss staying up late and chatting ... More About: Life , Military

I was so mad to see some people leaving mean comments for the ladies who work so hard to put the awards together. Not only do they do the awards, but they also write articles every day to help and encourage you with homeschooling. Please go over and leave a kind word for them in their comments! OOPS..
2007-11-06 20:02:00 I've been sorting through some of my favorite old black and while photos I copied at home a while back. I wrote notes with each picture and placed the note with the photo in the store album. Now, I want to finally put to use a great scrapbook kit my friend Betty gave me last year. It is a set of three albums that are my favorite pistachio green color with black pages. PERFECT for old family photos! This picture is of my great aunt Martha Sermon. She was one of my favorites! Aunt Martha was one of our few babysitters I had growing up and she always had the coolest toys to play with. She also taught me how to drink tea properly and made sure she had tea every afternoon! Well, when Daddy was telling me about this picture I had to stiffle a laugh. It seems my great aunt and this gentleman, Earl Snider, were only married for a night and then they divorced. I guess the rogue got what he wanted and ran out on her! She did go on to marry a sweet man and have several kids but she never menti...
Some more really pretty homemaking sites...
2007-11-06 14:56:00 Last week I linked to My Romantic Home's blog. I just love all the great deals Cindy can find. I think I need to live closer to a bigger city on Craig's list! Some times I just like looking through blogs that make me smile when I see such pretty things. It takes my mind off the everyday stuff and worries and I can just smile for a moment without thinking about anything else. Anyway, I thought I'd link to a few more pretty house blogs today so here goes:The Sparrow's Nest -- she just opened a store tooRaised In Cotton -- her brother just lost his battle for cancer so please be in prayer for them as wellLittle Red House -- she has posts about lots of silver from thrift stores and that is something I always look at, although I mostly gravitate towards pewter insteadSweet Cottage Dreams -- just looks too sweet and love her motto "dreaming of making a house a home"...The Old Painted Cottage -- home of Cottage of the month -- you can really get your romantic decor fix here :-... Carnival of Homeschooling is Up
2007-11-06 13:31:00 The carnival is up at Principled Discovery. I have an article about homeschooling a child with Aspergers listed and you can find that here but please go visit the carnival as well. Speaking of Aspergers, do you know what makes it all worth while to homeschool? I do, and I get to see it when we have a triumph over math like we have this week. There are days when your autistic son would rather listen to the flushing, swirling sound of water for 30 minutes in a bathroom hidden away from the psychologist testing him than do a simple math problem like 2 x 10 = 20. And, then, there are those days when your autistic son can answer, in less than 2 seconds flat, that 720 divided by 12 = 60 because it finally just clicked in his brain how to do math the smart way. That makes it all worthwhile!!Tags: Carnival of Homeschooling , Asperger Syndrome, Things to know, Principled Discovery, Teaching Math
Ok... not sure if this is cool or not but thought I'd share anyway...
2007-11-05 17:03:00 I was nominating this morning at the 2007 Homeschool Blog Awards and I started thinking how you have to be nominated at least 3 times. I have been touched by these blogs and think the folks are great! I hope you will go look at their blogs, think the same thing, and then go nominate them again so they get the three nominations, if you don't have anyone picked already. Monday Meanderings -- week of November 5th
2007-11-05 14:00:00 Lat week I missed out on MM because I still wasn't feeling great on Monday and didn't even remember until Tuesday. At that point I just said "ah, the heck with it" but I'm on it for today!! I've enjoyed reading Tiany's blog for several weeks now and I'm getting to know her even better now that she is my swap sister -- who sent me the yummiest coffee from her home state, by the way!! I can't wait until she gets her present.... it should be there any day now...woo hoo!!! This Thursday is our Marine Corps Ball and we will be having a few friends my husband went to high school with visiting and attending the ball with us. I'm excited about hearing first hand the stunts he pulled in school in Germany and he is probably a bit terrified...LOL. After some issues we had with Victoria's dress not matching up with pattern (material shrinking, difficult to read, etcc...) very well I figured I better not go there for my dress. We will finish those dresses... just not this week... More About: Week , November , November 5th , Erin
