The Honest Hard Work of Americans
2007-11-05 03:30:00
The stock market crashed in 1929 and soon after came the Great Depression. Our country was striving to succeed yet people by the millions were having to eat at soup kitchens and our country was in dire straights. Our farmers were facing drought and dead crops as well. Things just looked pretty bad in general. We elected Franklin D. Roosevelt in hopes that he would turn our country around and he did. Less than 40 days after his inauguration, he had already implemented the Civilian Conservation Corps. The 3 C's put healthy strong men to work and paid them $30 a month, with a stipulation that $25 of that be sent by allotment back to their family.  They also gave men (the age  allowed to be in 3 C's was between the ages of 18 and 26) the opportunity to better themselves by teaching them how to read and write and other education classes in their spare time around camp. The job of the3 C's  was to reforest our country, to build the national parks, to work on the railroad, etc.. The men...

a pretty good day :-)

Today was spent very simply. My husband and I went on our coffee date this morning about 6:00 a.m.. We came home and we both did a little blogging and Mike did some chatting while I did some laundry and sat down with my cookbooks. I came up with a menu that would last us until nearly the end of the month (minus the holiday trimmings). I then sorted through our pantry and fridge to see what was there and started writing out our grocery list. For the first time ever, I took the grocery list and sorted it by aisle at the commissary. This worked GREAT! We were there for about an hour just because of how much we bought. I knew it would be a lot but was still a little shocked when it rang up at $374 and some change. That included pet food and cleaning supplies as well as a lot of spices I knew we were out of and would need after next payday with the holidays coming up. Our pantry is full though and I know we will be eating really good, healthy food. That is something to be proud of! We th...

Coming soon to a blog near you....
2007-11-03 01:47:00
I'm so excited! I recently got some help and advice on putting together an e-book so I'm working on one now with ALL my homeschool printouts to share in one cool and convenient download! It just seemed like I wasn't finding enough time to keep loading individual files to my blog so this will make it all nice and easy for me and anyone who might want them :-)I'm also working on a few kitchen sets one that use graphics I drew with my mouse, special effects, and fonts. They have sheets for memo pads, a shopping list, and recipe cards. You'll be able to download the e-book. Print off as many copies as you want and create your own little matching sets. All you crafty people can make them and give them away for presents, too!Initially everything will be free and then I'll probably put a "recommended donation" price on them or something but I haven't quite decided all that. Anyway, I hope you all are as excited about it as me as I try out this new "thing"!Tags: e...

A Sweet Baby Dream
2007-11-02 16:45:00
I have been sick with this croupy, yucky cold since last Monday. It really wiped me out the first three days to where I was just laying around on the couch and we really did not do much of anything around here... including school which we are now making up for. I still wasn't well enough to go to church on Sunday but by Wednesday night I felt much better and was breathing good. Time to get out and go help with the Harvest Festival. We only have a clinic at our base and sometimes appointments are hard to come by. I wasn't able to get one so I've just been self-medicating with over the counter stuff. Good thing I was a pharmacy tech and know what would and wouldn't work for me! ANYWAY, Wednesday I was feeling better but I ended up still being really tired so I laid on the sofa in the afternoon after our work was done and took a small cat nap while the children all finished getting their things ready for the night. My daughter told me when I woke up it must have been really good dr...

Feminist Movements...UGH!
2007-11-02 00:00:00
I was at the local Hastings book store today buying a preparatory finger exercise piano book for Victoria (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics vol. 434 Schmitt Op.16, just in case you were wondering..LOL). She has finished with the books she started in August (mostly review) and needed something for practice while we wait for her new books to arrive.  As I stood in the checkout aisle, I spied a book whose title caught my eye. It was Vindication of the Rights of Woman written in 1792 by Mary Wollstonecraft. It was one of those books. You know, one that touts all the rights women should have because we are so down-trodden and need that we need to stop being so sensitive and take charge. I really didn't know the feminist movement went back so far.... I wish it would have been derailed somewhere back, oh, I don't know, around 1793 and it would have probably saved a lot of people a lot of grief, mothers especially.  I almost bought the book but I didn't. I knew I would probably be...

I am a veteran. My husband is still active duty. His whole family are pretty much veterans or still active. I would have hated to had to have stood up and read the recitation myself just to make sure they got the honors they have worked so hard for.. The VA clarified yesterday on their website in regards to the 13-Fold Flag Folding Ceremony:"Honoring the burial wishes of veterans is one of the highest commitments for the men and women of VA," said William F. Tuerk, VA's Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs.  "A family may request the recitation of words to accompany the meaningful presentation of the American flag as we honor the dedication and sacrifice of their loved ones."Read the rest of the story and clarification here. Also, please remember Veteran's Day is November 11th! Please thank a Veteran!! Many from Vietnam especially were not thanked upon their return home and so just a nice "Thank you for your service. Welcome home." mean...

Train Up A Child Thursdy -- Prayer
2007-11-01 16:30:00
***Train Up A Child Thursday is a meme dedicated to sharing biblical traits/characteristics you are teaching your children. There is no blogroll you have to sign up for or anything like that. There is a blogroll now in the left sidebar but you don't have to sign up if you don't want to. If you wish to participate just sign the Mister Linky and/or leave a comment so others can see what you are teaching your kids, too! I would love it if you would share by putting the button on your page as a link back but again you don't have to.***One of our middle sons best memories about prayer involves his baseball glove that his Opa gave him for his birthday a few years back. He had been playing outside with some friends and left the glove on the bench by our front door while he came in to eat dinner. He forgot it was there and went to bed that night. The next morning he remembered and went outside to grab it but it was gone. He was devastated and cried very hard. We told him that we knew how...

His blessings are many!! I do love our church so very much. It has been a great blessing to us at this season in our life. Our Pastor was a 4-Duece Mortar Man in Vietnam and so he has been there and done that and knows how to talk to our many returning veterans. He's been a real blessing to my husband since his return from Iraq. Tonight was our Harvest Festival at church. I've worked the registration table a few years in a row now. We just have a simple sheet to fill out so we can count and plan for the following years based on numbers from previous years. It also asks if you attend church and may we contact you, etc. We always tell everyone they can fill out however much they want and are welcome to come in no matter what. Most people don't mind the few questions and gladly fill it out. We have games, a cake walk,  food, etc.. and tonight our youth band performed several songs as well. In past years one of our winter visitors from Montana has brought his hot air balloon and we'...
Constitution Class
2007-10-31 17:46:00
So, I went there last night. A place no one else was willing to go. A place everyone was hedging about and not saying. ABORTION! Allow me to quote from the Declaration please:"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their CREATOR with certain UNALIENABLE Rights, that among these are LIFE, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."per the dictionary:ALL: Every one; the whole number or quantity of; the whole; the total; everythingCREATOR: One who creates; GodUNALIENABLE (dictionary ---> see inalienable): Incapable of being alienated, or transferred to anotherLIFE: existence; vitality; time during which one lives; conduct; spirit; vivacity; energy; biographical narrationI asked "So, if inalienable means incapable of being transferred,  and we are all (everyone of us) entitled to life (existence) by the One who creates us, then why is there a fight about whether abortion is illegal?"I had the feminist mot...

some readings from today...
2007-10-30 23:09:00
Psalms 103: 8-14 "The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. He will not always chide, neither keep his anger forever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heaven is above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the East is from the West: so far hath he removed our sins from us. As a father hath compassion on his children, so hath the Lord compassion on them that fear him. For he knoweth whereof we be made: he remembereth that we are but dust."Romans 12: 9-21 "Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil, and cleave unto that which is good. Be affectioned to love one another with brotherly love. In giving honor, do one before another. Not slothful to do service, servant in spirit serving the Lord, Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing in prayer. Distributing unto the necessities of the Saints: giving your...

a BEAUTIFUL house blog
2007-10-30 15:58:00
I like to look at frilly, pretty pictures in magazines and dream about what my house might one day be. Sometimes, however, I think all those magazines must be frauds because NO WAY could something look that sweet. Well, I found a blog this weekend that showcases beauty in home decorating. I just loved it. I loved even more the fact that she has done at least some of it with freebies and/or low cost items she has found out and about. You have to take a look at My Romantic Home. She has featured Debbie's, a friend of hers, kitchen and I realized that island is EXACTLY like a buffet I could have bought for $25 and passed up a few months ago. Couldn't you just kick yourself sometimes?! Anyway, I did figure I had to leave you with at least one picture of one of my rooms. This is what we call the music room/office. The curtains are no longer white as I tea-stained them in August. I like them better now as they aren't so start white. We actually were going to paint -- even though its ba...

great books we've been reading lately...
2007-10-29 19:31:00
Of course, not all books we read are Bible-based, as my husband and children all have a GREAT LOVE for fiction and fantasy, but these are a few that my husband and I have had on our nightstands in recent weeks:A Little Primer on Humble Apologetics by James W. SireThere Really Is A Difference: A Comparison of Covenant and Dispensational Theology by Renald E. ShowersGrace Abounding To The Chief of Sinners by John Bunyan (yes, the Puritan)Systematic TheologyVolume One by Dr. Norman Geisler (I almost hate to return this one to our Pastor because it is so good... I guess I have to buy my own..LOL)And as we've had many catalogue's arrive lately, I thought I would leave you with a quote by George Gissing (1857-1903) "It is a joy to go through booksellers' catalogues, ticking here and there a possible purchase." A Church You Call Home
2007-10-29 15:56:00
Philemon 1: 2-3 "And to our dear sister Apphia, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the Church that is in thine house: Grace be with you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ."In Okinawa, Japan , an island of about 1.3 million, the Christian population is about 3% (that's a high estimate and includes all denominations across the board that consider themselves Christian). The whole of Japan is usually considered to be about 1% Christian. There are churches in Japan but many still operate out of houses. It is not uncommon for a house church to hold 150 people in it for a service. Everyone just squeezes in and enjoys the sermon and singing, but most importantly the fellowship with God! Of course, most house churches in Japan are that size because of the lack of church buildings and a necessity to meet wherever you can.  We attended Central Baptist Church (but found the pastor was more interested at times in keeping people happy rather than sp...

I was reading through the archives since I was home yesterday still too sick to be around too many people, especially babies, at church. It always amazes me the things I remember about Caleb and Asperger Syndrome when I look through this blog. We first received the diagnosis of Aspergers back in December of 2004. It's hard to believe we've known about it for that long. The article below is from February 2005 and talks about what I considered stages a parent goes through after diagnosis. DO NOT take your children to see this movie!!!!
2007-10-29 05:12:00
You may already know about this, but I just learned about a kids movie coming out in December starring Nicole Kidman.  It's called The Golden Compass, and while it will be a watered down version, it is based on a series of children's books about killing God (It is the anti-Narnia) .  Please follow this link, and then pass it on.  From what I understand, the hope is to get alot of kids to see the movie - which won't seem too bad - and then get the parents to buy the books for their kids for Christmas.  The quotes from the author sum it all up.  Please click on the link below or copy - paste it to your browser to learn what is really going on here!  I'm going to tell everyone about this movie.  http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/c ompass.asp

Ron Paul thoughts
2007-10-28 04:52:00
OK, the other day I wrote about the Value Voters Summit and wondered if they really represent my values. I promised Baus in my comments that I would write about Ron Paul in a few days when I could really give it some attention -- we've been sick.. and still are but thought I'd give it a whirl anyway. It's hard to give a definite answer for why I don't like Ron Paul so much as just saying its a gut feeling. It's not just that but that is a big part of it. First off, part of it is he reminds me of Ross Perot. A big mouth but not a lot of substance. I look at Ron Paul and I see a lot of great votes but I look and see a lot of bad votes too. Inconsistent, not a lot of sense to be made out of them kind of votes. I know he says he would do all he can to overturn Roe V. Wade but then I see votes where he just doesn't seem to be cohesive in that thought. I mean, he voted against a law prosecuting people who took minors across state lines for abortions. He voted against a bill that wo...

another unique quote on Baptist history
2007-10-28 01:12:00
"...They [the Baptist s] have always maintained that their churches are as ancient as Christianity itself. That their foundations were laid by no less honorable hands than those of Christ and his apostles. In all ages since the first, the Baptists have believed their denomination more ancient than themselves. The American Baptists deny that they owe their origin to Roger Williams. The English Baptists will not grant that John Smyth or Thomas Helwysse was their founder. The Welsh Baptists strenuously contend that they received their creed in the first century, from those who had obtained it, direct, from the apostles themselves. The Dutch Baptists trace their spiritual pedigree up to the same source. The German Baptists maintained that they were older than the Reformation, older than the corrupt hierarchy which it sought to reform. The Waldensian Baptists boasted an ancestry far older than Waldo, older than the most ancient of their predecessors in the vales of Piedmont. So, too,...

I was blessed with being able to participate in a chat this week with the authors of this book. You don't want to miss out on this one!!Here is an excerpt from the webpage:Pull up a chair, dust off the cookie crumbs, and join Jennie Chancey and Stacy McDonald as they lay aside stereotypes like the “Stepford wife” and dispel such myths as the 1950s “perfect homemaker.” Laughter and tears will flow, and hopefully you will be infused with a renewed vision for victory as a wife and mother. politics and lies...here we go again
2007-10-26 20:03:00
Yesterday we got the whole politician boo hoo story about the California wild fires being the fault of global warming and not having enough National Guard troops to help fight the fire because they were all in Iraq. Obviously, the Lt. Governor is happy for settling on believing all Californian's are stupid people. I believe otherwise but let me share the facts with you just in case you are apt to believe such nonsense.Nationally, there are 390,000 troops that serve in some capacity in the National Guard, whether it be Air Guard, or Army Guard. 17,000 of those troops are in California. Less than 1/4 of those are currently serving in a deployed status overseas. Let's do the math: 17000 minus one-fourth equals 4,250.  The Governor has only called up for helping with the wildfire 1500 and 200 of those are helping on the border and 200 have been sent to San Diego specifically. That  leaves another 11,250 at the Governor's disposal. On the flip side of this, the base my husband is stat...

sig thingy..
2007-10-25 20:51:00
I found out when I posted the free sig thingy that it didn't transpose well to darker backgrounds.. a common thing with stuff made on transparent backgrounds if they are not done well.. it took me two seconds to do one in my graphics program so I'll add it here. I chose to not do it on a transparent background because of the small size of the type face. Instead, I first made a small plain graphic with a background the color of my background here. Then I just added text. When I made webpages for people I used Micrographx and loved the program for its ease and affordability. In our several moves, I have lost my main CD for that and have switched computers so all I have left are the graphic files. I recently downloaded Serif Photo Plus 6.0 and have had fun with it. It takes a bit of getting used to but that can be said of any graphic program you use. The best part? It's free!! You can download a copy here if you want..And here's the sig tag that I made with it..Tags: Serif Photo Plu...
