Partnership and Advance of the Gospel: The Resolved Church Mid-Fall 2007

Last Sunday I preached one of the most difficult sermons I have ever preached. It was not a sermon I was looking forward to or excited to preach, but it was as though if I did not preach it I would not have been doing my job as a pastor. Sex, Drugs, Rock-n-Roll and the Gospel

My brother-in-law’s new band, “We Barbarians” played at the Casbah last night. I’m kind of a rock-n-roll kid and enjoy going to shows. But I’m also a preacher and I don’t know too many preachers who enjoy going to dirty bars full of smoke, drunkeness, scandalous women, and music so loud that you feel the wind of the bass on your face and it leaves your ears ringing until the next morning. That is good times. I hadn’t been to a show in a while since my wife is 9 months pregnant with our daughter and people give pregnant ladies wierd looks when you’re hanging out in a bar. The whole experience reminded of the importance of understanding culture and being able to work within it for the sake of the gospel. (more…)

Sheep, Goats, and Other Farm Animals

So, two Sunday’s ago a reporter from the San Diego Reader showed up at church to review it for a column he writes called, “Shee p & Goats .” The article comes out tomorrow, so we’ll see what ends up coming out. I figure it can’t be that bad, but we’ll see. The phrase “sheep and goats” actually comes from the Bible and it is a pretty interesting title for a column considering it’s intended meaning Jesus. Repentance and Resident Evil

It may not have seemed to many to be a very Christian thing to do, but on Sunday afternoon after church and after the frustrating loss of our San Diego football team (The Chargers), I went to see Resident Evil 3: Extinction with a couple of the men in the church. Before the onslaught of moral accusations about why a pastor would be interested in seeing such “R”-rated evil gore, just give me a chance to share with you about resident evil and gospel repentance. First off it is hard not to like these kinds of movies if you are a guy. They are simple. There are bad guys, and there are good guys, and the good guys kill the bad guys. It doesn’t matter to me if it is a zombie movie, a cop movie, or whatever…if you’ve got that storyline, I’m in. That story is something that resonates with the moral fiber of our being. In this final week on Spiritual Disciplines, we look at WORSHIP. Discipline means creating regular thought patterns and life practices you regularly live out on a daily basis. To be disciplined is to be Christian. Without discipline a person’s life will lapse into a vague spirituality which merely follows the whim of emotion and ends up creating a very piecemeal character, run rampad with sin, and going nowhere. There is a lifestyle unique to being a Christian which takes time, education, and development to grow in…especially when you live in a land where concrete, cars, computers, and cell phones rule the land. Last week we looked at the discipline of rest, it is funny how much of the inventions of our age are actually tools to help us work harder. The Great Swan

In the early 5th century, Eraclius became the next pastor of the church in Hippo after Saint Augustine. When Eraclius stood in Augustine’s pulpit he said he felt like a cricket compared to a swan.
