K.O.G. Activism
2008-05-28 22:10:00
Activism. Wikipedia defines it as “intentional action to bring about social or political change.” In San Diego, maybe because i’s a big city, maybe because it’s a city that lives much of its life outdoors, or maybe it’s because we are one of the biggest melting pot places for eveything…but there’s a ton of passionate activism grassroots action in this city. But have you ever thought about the activism of Jesus? (more…)

Where Do Sermons Come From?
2008-05-21 00:32:00
A sermon is an interesting thing. It’s a speech of course, but it’s always a persuasive speech. In Ephesians 4:16 the Bible calls the church a body of people who each have different gifts that work together. My gift is my mouth. As the pastor of a young, small church plant I do a lot of things, from counseling, to pre-marital sessions, to administration, to leadership development and oversight, but most importantly I preach. This entry is devoted to sharing with you all how I prepare for a sermon. (more…)

Fear and the Gospel
2008-05-15 00:32:00
So last Sunday’s sermon was probably the gnarliest sermon, subject matter wise, I have ever preached. No matter how you put it, “vessels of wrath, prepared for destruction (Romans 9:22),” just doesn’t sit well in your stomach. When it comes to this subject, hell, either preachers tend to seize it like its candy and they yell and scream and treat it like it gives them some sort of right to be jerks to people…or preachers tend to totally avoid it and reason it away with things like universalism, annhilationism, or arminianism. What is the proper biblical view of the use of fear and hell in preaching the gospel? To that question I offer the following answers. (more…)

Film Deo Gloria
2008-04-22 22:33:00
One of the best ways to understand the culture we live in is to watch it’s movies. You can watch movies and find pleasure through the entertainment they provide, but there is also a step beyond that in watching a movie critically. Saint Augustine believed all things (including literature, film, music, art, etc.) should be enjoyed, as well as “used” to bring us closer to God, the true object of “enjoyment.” (more…)

A Hodgepodge
2008-04-16 17:49:00
Yes “hodgepodge” is a real word. Pronounced ˈhäj-päj deriving its etymological roots from a 15th century alteration of “hotchpotch” meaning a heterogeneous (different things) mixture. My entry from last week (HERE) was a pretty heavy hitting entry, so I thought I’d lighten up and just give you this short mixture of unrelated things. (more…)

Where, When and How you Work
2008-04-09 00:22:00
In last Sunday’s sermon I made a point that part of our vision of The Resolved Church is to be a city within a city, meaning the mission to create a spiritual city where who Jesus is and our pursuit of him together as a church is what determines how we live in the physical city of San Diego. I said one example of how that plays itself out is in our jobs. One of the most frequent things I am asked as a Pastor is how you know where to live and what job to work at. This journal entry is devoted to that subject. (more…)

Sempra Penitens
2008-03-19 15:28:00
Sempra Penitens means always repenting. What does it mean to repent? Martin Luther who ignited the Reformation by nailing his 95 theses on the door of Wittenburg in 1517 wrote this as his first thesis: “1. Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, when He said Poenitentiam agite (repent ye), willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance.” Some good discussion arose this week at Theology on Tap and at Biblical Manhood. This week’s journal entry is devoted to mission through Christian repentance. (more…)

What is a Church Plant?
2008-03-11 21:54:00
The Resolved Church is a church plant, but what does that really mean? We’re not talking about a type of plant, like bonsai, geranium, or a fern. The church isn’t really anything that can wholly be compared to anything else, the closest thing is probably the human body (Eph 4). So what is the metaphor of a plant getting at and what does it mean? (more…)

Anger, Stress, and Freedom
2008-03-04 23:28:00
I don’t know about you but I get angry, stressed out and frustrated at times. Often people asked me about how to deal with anger. The fruit of my wrestlings with anger has been extended periods of freedom and release from it’s anxiety and the intensity of it’s fits. I think everyone gets angry. There is good anger, there is bad anger, and there is the dealing with anger. For some anger expresses itself outwardly in some sort of aggression. For others anger expresses itself inwardly in some sort of withdrawal. Both are effects of anger. Here are my private journal entries that resulted from bouts with this particular affection. May it be a help and an example to you. (more…)

What’s Your Story?
2008-02-26 20:00:00
Last Sunday at church we had a special service called “A Day of Worship in Song and in Story .” We sang more than usual and had four different people share their stories. Stories of spiritual journey and becoming a Christian, stories of the gospel becoming real and taking root in their lives, stories of coming to love Jesus’ church…it was a special time. Everyone has got a story and those stories are important. Here’s why… (more…)
Pressing into Predestination
2008-02-19 19:56:00
Last Sunday I preached the first sermon where I have ever publicly addressed the topic of predestination. In my sermon I promised to provide some additional material in this week’s journal entry for those who want to study it more. So this entry includes resources, both books, essays and online material for those who want to press into predestination. These resources are not meant to be exhaustive but extensive. The bulk of the material supports and further explains the conclusions I presented and is categorized as “reformed literature”. For the purpose of fairness, I have provided some materials from those who do not deal with the biblical material in the same way and end up with far different conclusions. (more…)
