The Future Of Our Daughters by Shalene

I have a problem. I have three daughters. No, that in itself is not a problem. What is the problem, is that I'm having difficulty reconciling my beliefs about the woman's place in the home, and college educations for my daughters. Now, that's not to say that I don't think an education is important. I know that it is, and the fact of the matter is that, though I pray it is never known by my children, that divorce and death of a spouse could be realities for each of them. For this reason, alone, they should have something to fall back on. However, my problem is that I have a hard time encouraging my eldest daughter to pursue a career as a doctor. That's alot of education and expense that I wonder is really necessary.It's not that I'm not proud of her ambition. I am. I just wonder is there really a purpose in spending that much money, if she should be in the home as the caregiver in the family? It Sounded Like a Good Idea by Shalene

Taking the last long weekend of the summer to go camping with my two youngest children and my husband sounded like a good idea. It sounded like a really good idea when my husband suggested it. Getting out of the 110 degree heat, having some quality family time, and communing with nature sounded like so much fun! We used to do it all the time, but have since quit doing it so much, and I missed it.So, I scrambled around for 3 hours getting all our camping gear together, clothes and food for the weekend, and even packed a little extra in case we wanted to stay more than one night. I had such high hopes. I didn't bother with the play yard, for the baby to sleep in, because I figured she would just sleep with us anyway, and I'd do just like I did at SWC when it came time for bed. In my efforts to be ready for the marriage of my friend and her fiance, I must admit that I'm thinking about marriage quite a bit. I'm thinking about the fact that Christian divorce rates are actually, in come cases, higher than that of non-Christians! I'm thinking that there must be something that we're not remembering. I'm thinking about my own marriage and how blessed we are to have such a strong marriage, seven years after we met, especially with the way it started out.My husband and I were not believers when we met. My divorce from my first spouse was not even final yet (we had only been separated for a year.) My husband's (to- be) divorce was not final yet either. While what my brother in Christ stated made perfect sense, and he did attempt to back up what he said with scripture, I must beg to differ.My brother explained that while he is not a Seventh Day Adventist, he is of the opinion that the bible indicates that Christians should indeed practice the observance of the Sabbath on Saturday, as opposed to Sunday as many, if not most do. The only problem is it's apparently not burned in deep enough. Too often I engage my mouth before I engage my brain. When I do this, I almost always end up saying something hurtful, or at the very least, something I have do to double time to explain. You see I have 4 wonderful children that shape my life everyday. Perhaps, even more than I shape theirs, sometimes. Recently, my eldest daughter, who is 14, asked my husband about something we both do that is a sin. About why we do it, if we know it is a sin. (By the way, that sin is continuing to smoke, though we both know it is something we should not do. We both know that we are dirtying up our "temple," and we have both been led by the Spirit that quitting is something we most certainly should do. And yet we haven't.
