The Future Of Our Daughters by Shalene
2007-09-05 16:06:00
I have a problem. I have three daughters. No, that in itself is not a problem. What is the problem, is that I'm having difficulty reconciling my beliefs about the woman's place in the home, and college educations for my daughters. Now, that's not to say that I don't think an education is important. I know that it is, and the fact of the matter is that, though I pray it is never known by my children, that divorce and death of a spouse could be realities for each of them. For this reason, alone, they should have something to fall back on. However, my problem is that I have a hard time encouraging my eldest daughter to pursue a career as a doctor. That's alot of education and expense that I wonder is really necessary. It's not that I'm not proud of her ambition. I am. I just wonder is there really a purpose in spending that much money, if she should be in the home as the caregiver in the family? I know what some of you may be thinking, and that is how can I sit there and say that...

Explaining the Nephilim by Shalene
2007-09-04 18:06:00
NOW it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Genesis 6:2-4 NKJV (emphasis mine)I've always wondered who the Nephilim were and how they came to be. For awhile, I was confused and thought they were perhaps some other creation that God made outside the Garden of Eden, but that just didn't seem biblical, so I've attempted to find the answers, that I'd like to share with you here. What the verses above suggest is that the Nephilim were actually the ...

The Secret Behind "The Secret" by Shalene
2007-09-03 17:09:00
For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ [as] coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 2 John 1:7 NKJVLet me say first of all, that I have not read this book, nor do I plan to. I make a point of guarding my heart against such things, and just want to share the knowledge I have about this serious danger to Christ-like living. That's right "The Secret " is nothing but another of the deceiver's lies meant to tempt you by his half-truths. The "law of attraction" is not how God works. Read this excerpt from ChristianityToday.com:The Secret, you see, is all about the self?it's for the self, obsessed with the self. Newsweek offers this critique: "On an ethical level, The Secret appears deplorable. It concerns itself almost entirely with a narrow range of middle-class concerns?houses, cars, and vacations, followed by health and relationships, with the rest of humanity a very distant sixth."Since when does humanity come in sixth in t...

It Sounded Like a Good Idea by Shalene
2007-09-01 22:46:00
Taking the last long weekend of the summer to go camping with my two youngest children and my husband sounded like a good idea. It sounded like a really good idea when my husband suggested it. Getting out of the 110 degree heat, having some quality family time, and communing with nature sounded like so much fun! We used to do it all the time, but have since quit doing it so much, and I missed it.So, I scrambled around for 3 hours getting all our camping gear together, clothes and food for the weekend, and even packed a little extra in case we wanted to stay more than one night. I had such high hopes. I didn't bother with the play yard, for the baby to sleep in, because I figured she would just sleep with us anyway, and I'd do just like I did at SWC when it came time for bed. It sounded like such a good idea.I did take all four children to SWC with me at the beginning of August and it all worked out ok. Even my youngest's unnatural affinity for her crib worked out. (She will be tw...

For Our Fallen Heroes by Shalene
2007-08-31 04:45:00
Tim McGraw- "If You're Reading This"My husband shared this video with me last night, and it made me cry. It made me cry for all those families that won't see their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers and mothers come home, because they've gone Home. I wanted to take a moment and honor those souls that fight for our freedoms. Now, I have a lot of feelings about war. I would prefer to pretend it didn't exist, honestly. I would prefer to forget that we're in the midst of one. I don't watch the news, and generally steer clear of anything that might be remotely negative. I'm a bit of an ostrich that way. (You know, sticking my head in the sand.) My eldest daughter told me a couple years ago that she wanted to be in the armed forces and I became sick with dread! How much more so must those other mothers and wives feel when their family members join. And yet they are proud of what they are doing. I may not like to think about it, but I am proud of them too. We have ...

Joyful Authenticity by Shalene
2007-08-30 17:33:00
When I began writing and attempting to minister to others through my website and blogs, it was because of the leading of the Holy Spirit. I was led to share my life and my life experiences in a way that would glorify the Lord, and Him alone. I do this by being authentic and transparent in my writings. I share anything about myself, without fear of condemnation. It does not take courage on my part, because I have faith that the Lord has forgiven all my sins, and is shaping me into the person I am to become. He has also used my past to shape me into who I am today. I belong to the most wonderful church- Clovis Hills. Part of their philosophy is to live in Joyful Authenticity ."Healthy things grow. They are fed, pruned, bear fruit and experience a harvest. If they don?t, they wither, shrink and eventually die. Our spiritual lives are no different. They don?t just grow on their own, they have to be nurtured, cared for and invested in.God desires to transform our lives into reflections of...

I've Got Marriage on My Mind by Shalene
2007-08-29 16:20:00
In my efforts to be ready for the marriage of my friend and her fiance, I must admit that I'm thinking about marriage quite a bit. I'm thinking about the fact that Christian divorce rates are actually, in come cases, higher than that of non-Christians! I'm thinking that there must be something that we're not remembering. I'm thinking about my own marriage and how blessed we are to have such a strong marriage, seven years after we met, especially with the way it started out.My husband and I were not believers when we met. My divorce from my first spouse was not even final yet (we had only been separated for a year.) My husband's (to- be) divorce was not final yet either. And yet, we began a relationship that included premarital sex. We had a child together out of wedlock, and we lived together before marriage. Now add all those together with the simple fact that it was to be a second marriage for both of us, and it would seem that it was doomed from the start. And it could have...

A Blessed Marriage by Shalene
2007-08-28 16:17:00
"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." Ephesians 5:31NKJV Some of you know from reading my post "The Blind Leading the Blind" that I am now an ordained minister. You would also know then, that I had no intention of using the titles that go along with that. However, aside from curiosity about how easy it would be to do, I was intrigued by the thought of being able to minister to people that I wouldn't ordinarily be able to reach because of restrictions to their access. Such as prisoners, and hospital patients that I am not related to. I also kind of liked the idea of maybe being allowed to marry people. But I hadn't pursued that at all- until yesterday. You see, I have a very good friend that I was blessed to bring to the Lord a couple years ago. She has since moved to Oregon, but has become stronger in her faith. I like to think that part of that is my influence. (So I've got a little bit of ...

Becoming a Titus 2 Woman by Shalene
2007-08-27 17:05:00
the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things-- that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Titus 2:3-5 NKJV On Friday, I left you with requests for your prayers and for the hope that I would continue to write my inspirational thoughts for all to read. Well, today, I'm back to say that after much thought, prayer, and discussion, I here and I'm staying, until I'm led by God to quit. That moment has not come. Yeah!!!!What I have learned this weekend is that it is not an all or nothing endeavor that I employ. I have learned that I must adjust to my roles in both my home life and my writing, and the ministry that my writing is to be. I also must adjust the amount of time I spend "visiting" others. My entire life, I will be striving towards Proverb...

Becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman by Shalene
2007-08-25 16:34:00
Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:10-12 NKJVI am praying each day that I become more and more like the woman described in Proverbs 31. A virtuous wife, caring for her husband and children and fearing the Lord. I fear perhaps I am failing. I spend 3-4 hours each day reading the words of my friends and fellow bloggers, and writing my own posts; and I find that I am not spending an equal amount of time with my family. Therefore, I am praying that the Lord give me guidance as to how I can continue to witness and minister to those that read this blog, and yet still place my God and my family first. Though the words of this blog, in one way serve the Lord, by not placing my family in it's correct priority, I am not serving Him as I should. Therefore, I ask for your prayers, my friends, that I can find the p...

What If You're Wrong Part 2 by Shalene
2007-08-23 18:24:00
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him" (Psalm 103:11). I posted a video from YouTube yesterday, by one of my favorite artists, Nichole Nordeman. The video was for the song What If, and in the dedication on her CD jacket, she states the song is "for a friend who thinks this Jesus stuff is nuts". For all you friends, neighbors, loved ones and every one else, What if you're wrong? I have a relative by marriage that asked us this question before we were believers, and I never really thought about it. (Once again, I chose not to hear the Truth in her words.)Do you think that the He's "just another nice guy", that He was a dreamer, that He was certainly a special person, but not the Son of God? Do you think the crown of thorns is "no more than folklore"? And what about the Bible, do you choose not to believe that it is the Word of God? What if you're wrong???If you're right, then NOTHING. Nothing as in, this life means noth...

Simply Talking to God by Shalene
2007-08-21 17:52:00
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NKJVIn my experience as a Christ follower, I have had to learn what it means to pray continuously. This seems like such an impossible feat, when you first contemplate the thought. I mean, how can you really pray continuously? Well, I've learned that praying continuously is exactly what it seems. To pray continuously is to have an ongoing conversation with God. For me this ended up being a lot easier than I thought it would be. You see, I'm a talk to myself type of person. Only now, instead of talking to myself, I talk to God. When something is making me happy, I automatically thank God for it. When something is making me sad or upset, I tell God about it. I thank Him for everything, good or bad, because I know He has a divine p...

Observing the Sabbath by Shalene Kearney
2007-08-20 21:44:00
For the law was given through Moses, [but] grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17 NKJVYesterday, while reading another blog (that I thoroughly respect, for the record) I came across a post about observing the Sabbath and what that means for today's Christian. While what my brother in Christ stated made perfect sense, and he did attempt to back up what he said with scripture, I must beg to differ. My brother explained that while he is not a Seventh Day Adventist, he is of the opinion that the bible indicates that Christians should indeed practice the observance of the Sabbath on Saturday, as opposed to Sunday as many, if not most do. (Of those that observe a Sabbath at all.) Now before I go any further, let me say this: I do try to observe a day of rest. Can I call it a Sabbath in the traditional sense? No. I cannot. Why is that, you ask? These are the requirements for Sabbath-keeping: A person placed under that Sabbath law could not leave his home on the Sabbath...

My Tongue Tastes Like a Foot by Shalene
2007-08-18 21:18:00
My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19 NLTThis verse is burned into my psyche, I think. The only problem is it's apparently not burned in deep enough. Too often I engage my mouth before I engage my brain. When I do this, I almost always end up saying something hurtful, or at the very least, something I have do to double time to explain. I don't do this on purpose, but it makes no difference to the person on the receiving end.I have gotten much better at being tactful, from years of growing up in a family that didn't know the meaning of the word, but there are still moments when I let down my guard and say the first thing that comes to my mind. It takes a lot of effort to remember that:He who answers a matter before he hears it,It is folly and shame to him. Proverbs 18:13 NKJVLast night, even, I was honored with an award through the Worship and Arts team in my church, but when introducing the award and the reason for...

The Answer to My Prayers by Shalene
2007-08-17 17:49:00
'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,Your young men shall see visions,Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservantsI will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven aboveAnd signs in the earth beneath:Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness,And the moon into blood,Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to passThat whoever calls on the name of the LORDShall be saved.' Acts 2:17-21 NKJV Yesterday, I spent much of my waking moments in prayer. Pray er for all those that I want to reach for the Lord. I know that I cannot do it alone, but some days I wonder whether I am doing enough. I don't know if all the praying and emotions that went along with them, caused me to get one of my migraines or not, but I went to sleep in the aftern...

Prayers of a Burdened Heart by Shalene
2007-08-16 22:20:00
My heart is burdened today, by the thought of those not being reached. On Freedom in the Spirit, today, I posted a video of the song by Leeland- "Tears of the Saints". Perhaps I'm just emotional today, but I am so saddened by the thought of any being left behind. No, I am beyond saddened. I'm crying out to the Lord, let me lead them home! Use me to reach them, I pray with everything within me. For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:8-11 NKJVI guess perhaps today I just feel a sense of urgency. I have so many family members that are not believers, and I ache for them. How much more so, must ou...

Sin and Conviction by Shalene
2007-08-15 19:20:00
Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 NKJVI have been convicted of my sin. One of them anyway. You see I have 4 wonderful children that shape my life everyday. Perhaps, even more than I shape theirs, sometimes. Recently, my eldest daughter, who is 14, asked my husband about something we both do that is a sin. About why we do it, if we know it is a sin. (By the way, that sin is continuing to smoke, though we both know it is something we should not do. We both know that we are dirtying up our "temple," and we have both been led by the Spirit that quitting is something we most certainly should do. And yet we haven't. The other reason that this is a sin is that any addiction will become your Master. The bible teaches us that we are to have one Master in our lives and that is God. This is the other reason it is sinful.)We both know it is bad for us, and we both know to continue is a sin. So why do we do it??? We are b...
