2008-03-04 03:56:00
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently declared Israel ’s military incursion into Gaza to be “worse than the Holocaust.” Ironically, Abbas’ “doctoral thesis” was a work of Holocaust denial, so it’s not clear what insult was being insinuated by comparing Israel’s actions to something that he claims never happened (perhaps it was actually meant as a compliment?). But ...

Is Barack Obama a Gay Muslim Jewish Irishman?
2008-02-29 03:43:00
This is my first post (finally, after much arm cajoling) so I decided to make it an attention grabbing one. I’ve noticed people seem to be confused over Barack Obama ’s ethnicity. In his first run for Senate in Illinois, he apparently received a large share of the Irish vote because people saw his name and ...

It’s campaign season in the US, and one of the issues that comes up during every campaign is “school choice.” “School choice” is a code word for school voucher programs, through which money would be taken away from public schools and given to private schools instead. In other words, under a school voucher ...

February 2008 has been a month that has seen a lot of ups and downs in Israel and the broader pro-Israel community. We’ve marked the 5th anniversary of the death of Israel’s first astronaut; we’ve seen - possibly - the seeds sown for a very hush-hush 2nd “Disengagement” beginning with the small town of ...

The Sound of Silence, Jewish-Style
2008-02-27 16:20:00
There is nothing more filled with sound than quiet. It is both fascinating and frightening to listen to the cacophony of my internal sounds. After all, who knows what I might hear. My personal, layman?s, approach to quiet has always been to make so much external noise that I can?t hear the sounds from within. This ...

Illegal Questions to Ask: America vs. Israel
2008-02-27 14:44:00
I live between two distinct cultures. One part of me lives in America . I consume American culture by the boatload, I try to keep abreast of the politics, economics, news, and mass media. In ideology I empathize most closely with an open democracy, in which religion does not have a part (while it has a ...

Skittles No Longer Kosher in Europe
2008-02-26 17:50:00
After nearly a decade, Skittles are no longer under hashgacha (kosher supervision) in Europe . For years, you could travel, or at least stop over, at a European destination and buy Skittles (as long as they were made in Ireland or England). No more. Growing up traditional, I ate the non-kosher Skittles, among other candies ...

The 71 Sided Die
2008-02-18 06:05:00
One idea that is thrown around in Jewish thought is that there are seventy different approaches to learning. “Shivim Panim Latorah” (Bemidbar Rabba 13:15). The phrase in its entirety is, “There are 70 faces to Torah ; turn it over and turn it over for everything is found in it.” This claim ...

About the Impending Israeli Sushi Strike and the Implications and Ramificat
2008-02-14 21:23:00
Strikes are inevitable. Certain things can be done without. (I am not, God forbid, referring to House, Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, Prison Break, Heroes, 30 Rock, or any other TV shows affected by the recently-ended WGA Writer’s Strike in the US. That was hell, and should not be experienced by anyone.) In the long time that ...

Hezbollah Official Dies in Car Bombing
2008-02-14 00:23:00
Hezbollah official Imad Mughniyeh, the man suspected of planning attacks on the U.S. Embassy and Marine Barracks in Lebanon in the early 1980’s, was killed by a car bombing late Tuesday in Syria. Hezbollah has blamed Israel for the attack but Israel has stated that they had no involvement. Hezbollah announced the death several hours after the explosion but did not release details of Mughniyeh’s death. Later, the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria made a statement about Mughniyeh’s death being the result of a car bombing that took place in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Eye witnesses in Damascus claim that a civilian was killed as security forces secured the area and removed the body but Syrian authorities refused to give further details. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini was quoted as saying, “This action is yet another brazen example of organized state terrorism by the Zionist regime.” He would go on to call on the world to ...

Would you let someone shoot you with a puke ray?
2008-02-13 18:38:00
Sharon Weinberger has written an article for Wired’s Danger Room about her experience as the subject of a test involving a Sonic Blaster at a Jeruslaem hotel. Sharon’s reaction when she first heard about the less-lethal weapon’s existence was “A puke ray? An honest-to-God puke ray? Right here in Jerusalem?” I have to say that my reaction would have been the same, but Sharon went a few steps further than I would dare. She contacted Dr. Maurice Goldman, a retired dentist who is the designer of Inferno, and arranged a demonstration of the device’s effect which is supposed to induce wonderful sensations such as “vertigo, nausea, and pain in the chest.” Here is how Sharon described the experience: “I’m not sure words can do justice to what can only be described as the most unbearable, gut-wrenching noise I’ve ever heard in my life.” (more…)
