Quotes From Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire, Pt 3
2008-04-16 12:30:00
Here's a 3rd dose of quotes from Jim Cymbala's book: Fresh Wind , Fresh Fire . For the other parts, click here for part 1 and here for part 2."The Bible speaks more about resisting the devil than it does binding him.""We should not expect to discover new shortcuts in the spiritual realm.""We are too easily distracted from the call to simply wait on the LORD.""As a minister, I firmly believe that I am not allowed to preach what is not in the Bible.""No one has the right to adjust the Gospel or revise God's plan for His church.""No church, including the one I pastor, should be measured by it's attendance.""Every experience must measure up with the Bible. Some say that is going too far (being too strict), but if we have lived too close to the Word, we will settle that with the LORD when we meet Him in the air." - William Seymour"People say the church today is 'growing and expanding.' Yes, it's ten miles wide now--and about a quarter-inch deep." - Leonard RavenhillMore to come!

Quotes From Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire, Pt 2
2008-04-15 12:30:00
Here are more quotes from the book Fresh Wind , Fresh Fire . Part 1 can be found here."If our churches don't pray, and if people don't have an appetite for God, what does it matter how many people are attending the services?""The feature that is supposed to distinguish Christian churches, Christian people, and Christian gatherings is the aroma of prayer.""When we sincerely turn to God, we will find that His church always moves forward, not backward. We can never backup and accommodate ourselves to what the world or expects. Our stance must remain militant, aggressive, bold.""God still uses foolish tools in the hands of weak people to build His Kingdom.""In the church today, we are falling prey to the appeal of 'New!' The old truths of the gospel don't seem spectacular enough... What we have today is the work of 'technicians' or 'revisionists' or 'idea men' who feel the need to innovate, to devise novelties in order to help God's kingdom along."More tomorrow...You should re...

Quotes From Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire
2008-04-14 14:14:00
I've been reading a great book. It is Fresh Wind , Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala. It contains parts of the story of the birth of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. I highly recommend this book! It will stir your heart to pray and press in for the things of God for your life, church and city!I wanted to share a couple of quotes from the book that really stuck out to me... All of these are by Jim Cymbala unless otherwise noted:"God is attracted to weakness. He can't resist those who humbly and honestly admit how desperately they need Him.""We had to have a visitation of the Holy Spirit or bust.""We are not New Testament Christians if we do not have a prayer life.""Prayer is almost a proof of a church's normalcy.""The more we pray, the more we sense our need to pray. And the more we sense our need to pray, the more we want to pray.""The best style of prayer is that which cannot be called anything else but a cry." - Charles Spurgeon"The greatest answer to prayer is more prayer." - Samuel ChadwickMo...

The Scoop on Rend the Heavens
2008-04-10 20:40:00
I've always thought it was a bit random when people laid out vision for their blogs... but now I think I understand why they do. The blogging community is becoming quite vast and diverse. There are many different types of blogs that focus on many different topics. For whatever reason, my experience has been that "spiritually topical blogs" do not mix with "personal blogs". Again, that is my experience of the surfing I have done over the net.Obviously there are many blogs that do mix the two but for some reason they're not as popular...For a while here on Rend the Heavens (the name of my blog) I got in to just spiritually focused posts... but then I realized that either I was on a soap box and being quite negative and/or that I was not really being myself. That has changed. My blog is not about the hits or the stats but is seriously a representation of ME. The whole reason I've entitled my blog "Rend the Heavens" is because that's my heart's cry. I long for God to rend the heaven...

Student Ministry and Prayer
2008-04-10 15:28:00
I'm mentioned this before, but I thought I'd mention it again. I love student ministry. I do. I love my students. This world is going to be turned upside down by my peeps.Unfortunately at times it can be the hardest thing. But then at other times it's the most rewarding experience ever.Obviously I'm not in it for the experience... I'm in it for the students.I love it when I get to talk with them about things going on in their life... and how I get to offer hope... then it's even better when we talk a few weeks later and things have changed in their life! Man oh man... there's nothing like it.We've been having a deeper focus on prayer before our services within the last months (and in my personal life). We had always prayed together as a leadership team but it just didn't seem to be gellin'. Know what I mean?So we switched up the prayer times, etc., and they have been some intense time of prayer.I don't boast in this... but recently in and through those prayer times (pre-s...

Video Blog #10: Day Trip to DC
2008-04-08 18:29:00
This is technically supposed to be a video blog, hence the title... but I thought I add a story to the video as well.Yesterday, our family headed out with our pastors to Washington, D.C. We live on the west side of Pittsburgh... so this trek was a good 4 hours. We left at 6:30am... and boy was it a trip! The kids did GREAT. We haven't done much road trip stuff lately so we were dreading it a bit with the children but they did really well.We hopped on the Metro on the edge of the city and rode it in. We quickly went through one of the Smithsonian museums... walked around the monuments... hopped back on the Metro and headed home.We got in at 11:45pm. Long day.Oh yeah, and I got to feed a squirrel out of my hand. Thought that was pretty cool. You may not... but I did. It's on the video. So watch it...Click here if you can't see the video.

Is Jesus a Homeboy? pt 3
2008-04-04 15:09:00
So I've shared briefly over this last week about Jesus being a homeboy. You can check out part 1 here and part 2 here. Obviously, there's no way I could list all of the positives and negatives that could be attached to an "issue". Today I thought I'd offer my opinion on the matter.I personally do not think that when a believer says "Jesus is my homeboy" that they are being blasphemous or disrespectful. As for a non-believer, that's a different story of which I'll get to towards the end.If any of you out there know me personally, you know that I do not put up with disrespect for Jesus. I simply won't have it. Mockery just drives me up the wall because I believe that Jesus is to be exalted above everyone and everything! However, someone who has relationship with Jesus, I feel, has the right to call Jesus their homeboy simply because He is!Put it in to context... if you go to jesusismyhomeboy.com, you'll be able to do that. It actually tells the story of where that phrase came f...

Is Jesus a Homeboy? pt 2
2008-04-01 14:02:00
Yesterday, I started talking about the phrase "Jesus is my homeboy". You can check it out here if you've not read it yet.I'll continue where I left off...The negative of Jesus being a homeboy: - To some it may downgrade who Jesus really is: Jesus IS the exalted Son of God (Philippians 2:9). He is the First and the Last (Revelation 1:27). By calling Jesus one's homeboy, it's possible that that person is not completely giving Jesus the glory and honor that He so richly deserves. - To some it may offend: Anything out of the ordinary normally offends at least one person. A consistent use of "Jesus is my homeboy". Paul makes it clear (Romans 12:10) that we should be devoted to one another in brotherly love... thus if one knows something offends another, they should do their best to stay clear of it.**On this note, I'm trying to keep an unbiased look at the positive and negative issues concerning using the phrase "Jesus is my homeboy". My opinions on the matter will come later. - To ...

Is Jesus a Homeboy?
2008-03-31 15:35:00
So is Jesus a Homeboy? The shirts and bumper stickers have been around for a bit now. You've probably seen them. One of our students popped a question the other night at our student ministry and it included the idea that calling Jesus our homeboy was blasphemous. Oddly, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it ever since. It's actually been bugging me. Is Jesus a "homeboy"?Some immediately would say "absolutely"... some might say "absolutely not"... and then there's those who would say "what's the big deal?"I thought I'd put a few thoughts together on the subject... I'm going to spread it out over a couple of days... so no one jump to complete conclusions about what I think before I'm finished... ;)So here goes...I always like to check the dictionary to check out the "official" definitions...Dictionary.com states that a homeboy is: "a person from the same locality as oneself; a close friend or a gang member."UrbanDictionary.com states that a homeboy is: "The epitome of a ...
