Systemic change
2007-10-24 22:31:00
Just wanted to point you to this post by Bill Kinnon. Anyone who mentions Vaclav Havel scores brownie points with me. And anyone willing to talk about our lack of free press in North America scores even more (be sure to read the post Bill references: The Ministry of Truth)! Chan g e is in the air, quiet revolutions are underfoot...

Okay! This is what I'll do...
2007-10-24 05:00:00
I'm going to change my blog URL. So anybody that would want to find me once I change it: the new URL will be www.accidentalweblog.blogspot.com. I'll change it in 3 days. Obviously, this only helps my anonymity in the future... I just didn't like it that googling my name brought up my blog... For those of you who already know me through the blog, I trust you not to do anything weird (like start stalking me, or planning my ultimate demise). :) I probably don't have enough readers to warrant this precaution, but I don't want potential employers reading my blog as a form of 'screening' me either. That's just creepy.

Word to the wise

I appreciate the wisdom of others who've had more experience than myself. It's helpful. Dan over at Cerulean Sanctum had some practical wisdom on the cost of blogging. I've taken a lot of what he said into account, and have removed a couple posts from this blog, and edited some others. I suppose these posts are forever filed away in cyberspace regardless, but I felt the need (after reading what he had to say) to at least delete them from here. Sorry to anyone who engaged me in the comments of these posts - I appreciated the interaction. But I realize I need to be more careful as Dan made some excellent points. I highly recommend reading his post if you blog. So, from now on, I'm sticking with the original theme of this blog: general Christian stuff and stuff I think is amusing. :)

One of the benifits of globalization

Only on youtube can you find footage of two Chinese boys lip-syncing to a German song in honor of World Cup 2006. If you haven't seen these guys, they've become internet celebrities since they uploaded their first video a few years ago (lip-syncing to a Backstreet Boys song).

Love God, Love One Another

I am not an expert on socio-political ideology. I need to study this out more. But here are some thoughts swirling around in my head lately about the differences between the big two: capitalism and communism. These are just initial thoughts, and I feel that I will probably want to come back and change it when I've learned more. But I'm okay with making some mistaken assumptions initially. The problem with pure Communism (not the manifestations of it that we saw in history in the Soviet bloc, but as Marx himself prescribed) is a complete dependence on human altruism - putting the needs of the community above the needs of self. There are plenty of communists who still believe in the ideology of Marx (even though the Soviet Union collapsed) because they argue no one has yet attempted true Marxist communism. They argue that the Soviet experience was a perversion, and tyrannically enforced from the top down. Marx believed 'the Revolution' would not just start as a 'bottom-up' movem...

Maybe I'm Not Crazy After All!
2007-10-20 21:19:00
Back when Shane and I lived in Calgary (2001-2005), I started getting these "crazy" ideas in my head about how to "live out" an authentic church community with others. I had never heard the word "emergent", and was totally unaware that people all over the nation were feeling the same things I was, getting the same crazy ideas. We've implemented several of these ideas already, but look forward to doing more... The future is bright!

Japan's love relationship with Jack Bauer
2007-10-20 19:57:00
The ironic thing is that I actually got hooked on 24 in Japan. Japanese TV was brutal and we didn't have satellite, so we couldn't watch the regular programming of 24. But we had a small video store that carried all the previous seasons of 24. So we would rent a couple, and then race back to the video store the same night to rent a couple more because we got so hooked. I just miss hearing "Jack -o Bow-uh" (from the Japanese voice-actor who made the intro on the Japanese 24 DVDs).

Ambassador and Parent
2007-10-17 00:13:00
As a parent, I am the first representative of God and godly authority in my child's life. That is a huge responsibility, and I know that my parenting will have a direct effect on how my child relates to God in the future. Perhaps this is even more true of my husband. But I think he's doing a fantastic job, so this is more about me as a mother.I have been doing a lot of reading about positive discipline, negative discipline and a variety of discipline styles. Let me tell you, it has raised a lot of questions in my heart and mind. So I've been asking God about these things. The first thing I realize is that my parenting style, and how I will choose to discipline, is directly related to how I view the parent-child relationship. If I understand that relationship solely through an authoritarian grid, then I will probably be heavy on submission and obedience. But it's not just authority and submission. The relationship also entails selfless love, and mutual respect. I have a desire to...

I Miss School. I Miss IFGA.
2007-10-16 09:07:00
I loved school. I had so much fun in university studying global politics. I care about that, isn't that weird? It must be weird, because I find it really difficult to find anyone else who shares this passion. But in school, they were everywhere, or at least all in the Int'l Relations department. I've never talked about it on my blog before (probably because I didn't want to make myself sound overly important or something) but I used to work with a Christian NGO called the Institute for Global Affairs. IFGA was organized and maintained by a couple of dear friends from the UK, and it partnered with prophetic leaders from many nations (from Europe, Canada, America, Africa, Japan). Most of what we did revolved around prophetic intercession for global governance bodies and G8 summits and world leaders. Sounds impressive, doesn't it? That's why I've never wanted to talk about it. But, what the heck. I'm feeling very open right now. Personal divulgences, here we come. It all ended ...

For Freedom
2007-10-14 23:06:00
I didn't know much about the Patriot Act. I didn't know much about RFID chips and the Real ID Act. But the more I learn, the more I believe these really are serious times in America. When our constitutional rights start being taken away, we better take notice. This is not an issue of the right or the left - it transcends party politics. I am a staunch believer in the constitution and I think that if we as a nation claim to be fighting for freedom, we better not be throwing our own freedoms right out the window. If you are interested in the constitutional rights that Americans have lost (and are fighting to maintain), I recommend watching this one hour documentary online.

Post-Charismatics and the Prophetic
2007-10-12 21:28:00
I found this article to be very pertinent to me. While I tend to avoid labels, "post-charismatic" is appropriate in my case as I come from that background, and was heavily involved in prophetic ministry. (I do not intend the "post" in "post-charismatic" to imply a renunciation of the gifts of the Spirit. But rather, a moving away from charismatic church culture as it has traditionally been expressed).A preview of the article (actually, it's more of a conversation):"We're really in the very early stages of a conversation about missional prophetic ministry, and there's much to be added to flesh out the picture. As the post-charismatics turn their attention toward missional living and attempt to begin the practice of the charismata in that context, a consideration of prophetic ministry will inevitably be on the table for further discussion and re-envisioning."If you enjoy the article, there are more that you would find interesting on Emerging Grace's post "Char ismissional".

What about Wine?
2007-10-12 02:11:00
Most who read this blog are American as am I, otherwise I would find it a bit pointless to post on this topic. Christians from other nations will read it and go, "Ya. Duh.""What is the Biblical teaching on the use of alcohol? That was the question we sought to answer in this inquiry. Based on the 247 references to wine and strong drink in the Bible, based on the life of Jesus, and in light of the common arguments that arise in a discussion on this topic, we find a simple (and, perhaps to some, surprising) answer."You can read the study here. Please feel free to share your thoughts on the article!

Just a regular Joe... Well, not exactly
2007-10-11 09:10:00
I've been thinking a lot about effective discipleship lately, and those people who have made the most impact on my life. There are a handful of people that I consider myself quite privileged to have worked alongside through the years. One of the most inspiring people I got to meet was a guy named Joe Ozawa. I only got to see Joe a couple of times each year as he partnered with a group that I worked with too (a prayer and intercession thing). But just being around this guy changed me. He was the most real, most caring person I have ever met. He looked like Jesus. And it inspired me to look more like Jesus too. This was not "discipling" in a formal sense at all - he didn't try to teach me to genuinely care about people. He just genuinely cared about people. And it was contagious.Joe was a profoundly powerful person, not because he tried to be. Just being who he was in God was powerful in itself. And I want to be that kind of person. That who I am in God is so powerful, genuine and r...

"Home" Groups
2007-10-10 04:46:00
When my husband and I returned to North America from Japan, we moved to a small rural town situated between the Canadian border and a small metropolitan area to the south. Last week, we heard that some interns from a school of ministry in Canada had moved to the metro area here in the states and were starting home groups and a church plant. There was an email to contact for info on either the home groups or the church plant. So I emailed to find out about the home groups as I would love to meet some other local believers in an casual setting like that. They replied to my request and informed me that their current venue (an office space) for the Thursday night "home" groups was no longer available and they were looking for a new space. I found that highly amusing. How can we possibly have "home groups" if we don't have a public venue for them? Aaahh... too much... anyone have a home?!!!
