Just babysitting a 2 year old!

Well here I am in Cape Town listening to Sue Miller tell the delegates at the conference that at age 2 kids begin to put their values in place. Having showed us a video-clip of a 2 year old retelling the story of Jonah, she reminded us that children's ministry leaders and volunteers are not baby-sitting! They are building into the lives of the smallest among us and being Jesus with skin on to them. This reminded me of how often I have spoken to children's ministry volunteers who have told me that they are "just" Sunday School teachers or that they "just" pack the activities for the children or that they "just" sing with the children on a Sunday. My goodness! When we consider that 83% people who come to Christ do so before age 13 (see George Barna's site), we are not "just" anything! We are engaged in the most strategic play in the church today. We need to understand that our role is one of the most important and impactful in the Christian world. Whether it be an upfront volunteer...

Sue Miller in South Africa

Hello friends! Wow - it has been a long time since my last post! Apologies for that! I hope to be a lot more regular from here on in... Someone who I have come to admire and respect is Sue Miller - author and long-time director of the children's ministry at Willow Creek Community Church. Her and I have developed a wonderful friendship over the past six years and she has taught me much about the fantastic world of children's ministry.Sue arrived in Johannesburg yesterday for a children's ministry conference at which her and I are speaking. We then travel to Durban and Cape Town for similar events. This is a wonderful opportunity to take the message of prevailing children's ministries into the broader church community. South Africa 's socio-economic challenges make this something quite unique and we will have people in the conferences and coaching sessions from very diverse backgrounds. Some will be from large mega-churches in the cities while others will be from much poorer commu...
