How Great Thou Art
2007-11-10 16:31:00
Mr. Carl Gustaf Boberg (1859-1940), a Swedish pastor, editor, and member of the Swedish parliament, was enjoying a nice walk when a thunderstorm suddenly appeared. A severe wind began to blow. When the storm ceased, Mr. Boberg looked out over the clear bay. Hearing a church bell in the distance, the words to How Great Thou Art began to form in his heart.O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,How great Thou art, How great Thou art! When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeurAnd see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Saviour ...

Eight Random Things
2007-11-09 15:31:00
Jenn tagged me for this. Here are the rules: once tagged, you must link to the person who tagged you. Then post the rules before your list, and list eight random things about yourself. At the end of the post, you must tag and link to eight other people. When I was born, I was the only white baby in the nursery. My earliest childhood memory was when I was about 1 1/2 years old. I remember my father leaving for work and following him out the door, falling and scraping up my nose. I remember what the outside of our house looked like and the street corner we lived on.I was born with my hip dislocated.I was a frequent patient at the Shriner's Hospital when I was little. My friends from high school thought I was NEVER having children.I never thought I would live past the age of 18.I have played several musical instruments; French Horn, Oboe, Flute, Piccolo, and helped out in the percussion section.I was a voice major in college and even had a voice scholarship (before I dropped out to get ...

Teach Your Children To Forgive
2007-11-08 14:29:00
This seems a basic lesson for us but maybe for others it is not. How many times have you had your children apologize for a wrong they have committed? Many I am sure. One thing we have taught our children is to also name the sin for which they are apologizing. This is an attempt at removing the non -repentance of a simple I'm sorry type of apology or an apology that only says I'm sorry I was caught. We also go a step further. After an apology has been given we ask the one offended to forgive and the forgiven one to say thank you. This may seem trivial to some or just plain unnecessary but I think it is a very important lesson to teach. Children need to learn to be forgiving, sometimes we do not always feel like forgiving one another but it is something that we need to learn to do. People will always disappoint us, we need to have a forgiving spirit.Colossians 3:13b if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also mu...

13 Things About The Shetland Sheepdog
2007-11-08 13:47:00
Thursday Thirteen13 Things About SheltiesOur family has had several pets over the many years but the ones we have had the longest are the two dogs we currently own. We have two Shelties, Annie & Shiloh. They are of sable coloring, meaning they look like the dog in the middle above. For a bit of fun, since I love my dogs, I thought I would share 13 things about Shelties.Sheltie is short for Shetland Shee pdog, a herding breed that originates from the Shetland Islands near Scotland.Shelties are often called "miniature collies" because they look similar to rough collies only in miniature sizes, but they are actually a totally separate breed .They are excellent with children and are great for a large family (they are herding dogs!)There are three main colors for Shelties; Black, blue merle, and sable (ranging from golden through mahogany)and can be marked with varying amounts of white and/or tan.The Shetland Sheepdog is intensely loyal, affectionate, and responsive to his owner.Wi...
Swimming Against The Current
2007-11-07 19:55:00
Do you ever wonder if all of your hard work will ever make any difference in this world? Do you ever feel as if all you do is for nothing? Do you ever contemplate the idea that you are not helping anyone? Have you ever given in to a dissenting voice that tells you you are wrong? Or do you evaluate your life and if you find no error, continue on against the current of worldly mindsets? The more I learn about the Lord, the more He teaches me and molds me, the closer to Him I become, the more I realize how much more have to learn! This is what creates a great hunger to know Him more! Some will not like this growth, other will feel threatened by it, many will not understand the deeper truths the Lord has shown you, even some Christians. Do you give in to a dissenting voice that tells you you are wrong? Or do you evaluate your life and if you find no error, continue on against the current of worldly mindsets? There have been times in my short blogging career that I have thought of ...

Army Spc. Eric S. McKinley24 years old from Corvallis, OregonCompany B, 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment, Army National GuardJune 13, 2004An avid outdoorsman, Spc. McKinley worked as a baker at Alpine Bakery in Corvallis, Ore. Upon his return from Iraq, he hoped to open a juice bar in the college town to provide a drug and alcohol-free environment for young people. Friends and co-workers remember Spc. McKinley as a quiet, caring young man who dyed his hair, sported several tattoos and loved ska and rock music. His senior yearbook picture showed a grinning young man with spiked hair dyed red and green. In other 1998 yearbook pictures, he has purple and blue hair in a mohawk.Spc. Eric McKinley was killed when a roadside bomb north of Baghdad detonated destroying two vehicles and wounded four other Oregon soldiers. They were identified as Staff Sgt. Phillip Davis, 23, of Albany; Sgt. Matthew Zedwick, 23, of Bend; Cpl. Shane Ward, 23, of Corvallis and Pvt. Richard Olsen, 23, of...

A Psalm of Confession
2007-10-06 14:44:00
This past week my middle children have been studying about the Psalm s. Next week we will focus specifically on Psalm 51. This is a Psalm of confession. David confesses here his sin with Bathsheba and asks for forgiveness. This Psalm gives us a great example of confession as well as reminding us of our loving, gracious, and forgiving Lord. Take a moment and read Psalm 51.Psalm 511 Have mercy on me, O God,according to your steadfast love;according to your abundant mercyblot out my transgressions.2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.4 Against you, you only, have I sinnedand done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your wordsand blameless in your judgment.5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.6Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;wash ...

You Thought Patting Your Head & Rubbing You Tummy Was Hard!!
2007-10-05 15:12:00
I received this from my daughter via email but I laughed so hard. I am embarrassed to say that it was a source of entertainment in our home for far too long. :o)It is from an orthopedic surgeon. This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's preprogrammed in your brain!1. While sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right Hand. Your foot will change direction.

Updated Prayer Request
2007-10-04 18:52:00
A couple of weeks ago I posted a prayer request for one of my daughters...HERE. I am very thankful that we pushed the primary care doctor for the biopsy referral. We went in to general surgery today for an assessment. Apparently, what our daughter has is not typical of the diagnosis given from the PCP. Not only that, but this growth/tumor or whatever it is, is three times larger than we realized. Instead of being about the size of a nickle the doctor could feel a mass about the size of 5 centimeters. We go back next week for an MRI because, "they do not want to start cutting without knowing what they are dealing with and how deep it is". (doctor's words). Please continue to pray for our daughter's healing and wisdom for the doctors.

Humility: T13 & Train Up a Child
2007-10-04 14:18:00
Since it went over so well with my readers last time I combined my Thursday Thirteen post with my Train Up A Child post, I decided to do it again. Enjoy!HUMIL'ITY, n. [L. humilitas.]1. In ethics, freedom from pride and arrogance; humbleness of mind; a modest estimate of one's own worth. In theology, humility consists in lowliness of mind; a deep sense of one's own unworthiness in the sight of God, self-abasement, penitence for sin, and submission to the divine will.2. Act of submission. With these humilities they satisfied the young king.In today's culture humility is often a virtue that is frowned upon. It is also a virtue that is hard to maintain. Humility is a fleeting thing. The moment you think you are humble you have ceased to be so. Ironically, according to scripture those who are humble are the ones that receive honor. There is great reward to the one who has a humble spirit. Humility is a virtue that adults should pursue as well as model for and teach to our ch...

A Solders' Angel
2007-10-03 14:21:00
This Weeks Hero Was Suggested By Greta, Who Is Herself A Solders' Angel May Not Solder Go UnlovedBack in 2003, self-described "ordinary mother", Patti Patton-Bader, started an organization called Solders' Angels because her son, Sgt. Brandon Varn, wrote her a letter from Iraq in which he showed concern that some of the brave men and women there weren't receiving any mail or support from back home. Well, she wasn't going to allow this. She called a few friends and family asking them if they would write to some of the soldiers. They'd never met them. Didn't know who they were, but they wrote. And in a few short months, Solders' Angles went from an idea an "ordinary mother" had to having chapters all over the country and thousands of angels all over the world letting soldiers know that they were loved and respected by writing hundreds of thousands of letters, sending care packages, medical supplies, body armor and lending comfort and support to military families. Solder's ...

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo
2007-10-02 14:28:00
Mission San Jose was founded in 1720. Its founder was the famed Father Antonio Margil de Jesús, a very prominent Franciscan missionary in early Texas. The mission was built on the banks of the San Antonio river. Known as the "Queen of the Missions", this is the largest of the missions and was almost fully restored to its original design in the 1930s. Spanish missions were not churches, but communities, with the church the focus. Mission San Jose is an active parish and visitors are welcome to attend mass on Sundays.

Mission San Juan Capistrano
2007-10-01 14:38:00
This past week-end our family spent part of the day visiting a few missions here in the San Antonio area. This week I will share about our visit to both of them. The first mission we visited was Missi on San Juan Capistrano . It was originally founded in 1716 and was moved to its present location in 1731. The mission sits along the calm San Antonio River. Still being an active Catholic parish, the mission still holds services and the priest resides on the grounds in the parsonage. There is a lot of history here as well as being a beautiful place to visit. Here are a few pictures of our visit to the mission.

2007-09-30 15:02:00
While spending the evening with my brother-in-law and his family we all had a great laugh! We were playing Catch Phrase and one of my daughters was taking her turn. She had to try and get her teammates to guess "Marine Corps". She did really well only she read that last word phonetically instead of the way we actually pronounce it.Her turn went something like this:Daughter: Uncle Mike is in the.....Teammates: Oh the Marine Corps!!!!Daughter: yes, now what do you call a dead body?????Teammates: WHAT? Marine Corps and dead body..ummm..what on earth......ummmmmBUZZER!!!Daughter: It was Corpse! After a round or two of laughter we explained it to her and then laughed some more.Aren't phonics great?!?!?!?!

Types of Psalms
2007-09-29 16:55:00
The Biblical Psalms can be divided into five different categories. The first category is the most frequent type of Psalm and that type is the psalm of lamenting. These are psalms in which the author cries out to God for help or rescue. The second category is the psalm of confession. A wonderful example of this would be Psalm 51 where David confesses his sin with Bathsheba. Two others are the psalms of praise and the psalms of thanksgiving. The last category includes what are called imprecatory psalms. These psalms call for the judgement of God upon His enemies.Often times people tend to focus primarily on the Psalms of praise and thanksgiving, I love these as well. We should also pay close attention to the other types of psalms. Those that give us the example and call of confession and repentance. Those that call for the judgement of God upon His enemies, that God's justice will be evident. The psalms of lamenting are also of great value. We live in a fallen world fil...

What is Family Reformation?
2007-09-29 06:40:00
Family Reformation is something that is near to my heart. With the grace of God and His Word, our family continually strives to be formed anew each and everyday into the type of obedient family God desires. Here is a link to a great article on family reformation. This next paragraph is a snippet from that article.....So, what is a family reformation? To reform something means to “form anew” or to “rescue from error and return to a rightful course.” Many Christian families are in error. We have churches full of “out of order” families where men are not leading, wives are disrespectful, children are rebellious, and everyone acts and reacts selfishly. Families need to be “formed anew” – reformed into the order God prescribes in His Word.READ MORE.........

13 Things That Scream "Go To The Grocery Store!"
2007-09-27 19:05:00
Thirteen Things That Scream "Go To The Grocery Store !"Last payday, 2 weeks ago, you only spent a fourth of your regular grocery budget. You are rationing toilet paper squares.Except for the soy sauce and balsamic vinaigrette, and the little mustard packets you swiped from Subway, ALL of your condiments are gone. You sliced your last 4 cheese sticks to stick in a casserole. You used cans of evaporated milk to make breakfast. You run out of the plastic grocery bags you usually save to line the bathroom trash cans. When asked what's for dinner, you say, I don't know, I just threw stuff in there!Celery is supposed to be rubbery, right?Children open the refrigerator door and stand there longingly with the look of death by starvation on their faces. There is water or water or water to drink. The only thing in your freezer is ice and that old box of baking soda.Sugar, what is sugar? When your children ask, "uh mom, when are you going shopping again? I'M STARVING!!!!"

The Big Giveaway: A Full Ballantyne Christian Adventure Library
2007-09-26 03:46:00
My friend Kim over at Life in a Shoe is hosting a giveaway of Vision Forum's exciting new adventure series, Ballantyne books.Inside sources say these books are everything you would expect from Vision Forum. They are well written, fast paced, with a rich vocabulary and exciting storylines. The characters are strong, courageous, virtuous, principled - except for the bad guys, of course. :)And the Christian worldview is inextricably woven into the book, from cover to cover. I am a firm believer that one's worldview shines through in all that one does, and Mr. Ballantyne was a Scottish covenanter of the 1800's. You will know that when you read his books.
