2007-11-14 06:10:00

2007 Tibetan Buddhist Spring Festival a hit
2007-11-12 03:48:00
The weekend went well and the weather was beautiful. The blessing ceremony was particularly good this year. Personally sometimes I feel the invited politicians who speak during the blessing ceremony tend to be a little political in regards to the content of their speech’s. This year however they kept their speech’s less politically charged. Ironically ...

Dalai Lama to give Stages of Meditation teachings
2007-11-02 06:26:00
HHDL is coming back to Australia in 2008 to give 4 days of teachings on the famous text by the 9th century Indian Buddhist saint Kamalashila called Stages of Meditation . For anyone interested, there is a book available entitled Stages of Meditation published by Snowlion or you can get it from amazon here The tour dates are 6-16 June 2008 although the teaching is only for 4 days. I’m not sure on the happenings of the other days at this stage. HHDL did say that he would prefer to teach for 10 days in one spot. Hopefully the organizing committee were listening! Why cant I meditate properly
2007-10-31 02:16:00
Have you been in the position where although you have tried really hard you just can’t seem to get your dharma practice working? You keep telling yourself that you should learn how to meditate or meditate each day for a week but, then life gets in the road! You are not alone! Most practitioners have faced this problem at some point. Some make it through, while others simply give up. If you want to be one of those who makes it, you need three key elements - patience, perseverance and consistency. Patience is key for any endeavor be spiritual or not. Would you expect someone to become a great musician in months? No of course you wouldn’t. So why get frustrated, have patience and you will become better and always remind yourself that it will take time and in some cases alot of time. How much time I hear you ask! Well that will depend of the individual and your natural abilities. But most importantly it depends of consistency. Your consistency has a direct bearing ...

Western Funerals and Buddhist prayers
2007-10-12 10:57:00
Earlier this week my monastery got a call from someone who’s mother had past away and they wanted a monk to says some prayers at the funeral.  The mother was a Buddhist sympathizer and had recently been to Burma to participate in the protests there. I was asked by to attend and to chant the Je Tsong Khapa Lamrim prayer and two dedication prayer written by Geshe Loden. I often have fun at these events because people are more open at these times and you can get all types of people asking all sorts of questions. So it is a good chance to smooth out some of the misconceptions that the average Joe or Mary has about Dharma and boy there are some strange ideas about what Buddhism is! I was asked back to the wake which was just around the corner and so of course I went. The afternoon was nice and I spent most of the 3 hours fielding questions ranging from what is meditation to how does Buddhism explain evolution!  During the actual funeral ceremony when it came time for...

Why do Buddhists meditate on death
2007-10-06 07:55:00
I have heard people ask this question before. I’ve even seen friends and relatives turn away in fright when the subject of death meditation comes up. But the purpose of meditating on death is not to be morbid, negative or to induce fear. Anytime you think that Buddhism is being negative, I can guarantee you that you have misunderstand something. Buddhism is about replacing dysfunctional states of mind with functional minds. So the question is really what is the purpose of meditating on death. Generally speaking we are so busy with our lives that finding time to sit down and practice is not an easy task. Even when we really want to meditate, life can get in the road! This is where death meditation come into play as it is a powerful motivating force. Why, because death is final! Once you are dead you aint got no more time to practice…the jig is up! So just as sports people us different techniques to motivate themselves and their team mates, Buddhist use the finality of de...

Do you get sore knees from meditating?
2007-09-28 06:56:00
I think almost everyone has felt the pain of mediators knee! It can be a terrible pain and also a big hindrance to your meditation. Mediators knee, like tennis elbow is a recurring injury that for many manifests during retreats. I was remaindered of this trick recently when during a group retreat a friend of mine spoke of having sore knees. He has been meditating for 20+ years and had been silently suffered through the pain, thinking that this was just normal, for all that time. Given that for many people engage in retreat only every 12 months or so, I can understand how it might take 20 years to finally ask for help. When I first tried this trick I was very surprised just how effective it is! I was amazed that my pain was almost gone over night! What it is!   I hear you crying. A hot water bottle placed over the knees during breaks between sessions! It is that simple! You don’t need to do it each break, maybe you can just place the hot water bottle on your kne...

Ryan Oelke a buddhist and a geek
2007-09-25 01:25:00
Just recently I spoek with and Ryan Oelke from the Buddhist Geek podcast about his start in Buddhism, his solitary retreat and his foray into podcasting. 1: How, when and why do you get into Buddhism? I came to Buddhism while I was in undergrad at Missouri Western State College. I don’t quite remember the exact course of events, but I do know that the Dalai Lama’s book, "The Art of Happiness" was pivotal for me. I had never heard the world spoken of in this way, and it all sounded so matter-of-factly. Reading that book really opened the door to contemplative practice, to dive into what lie behind ordinary perceptions. This lead me to visit the Rime Center in Kansas City, Missouri, a non-sectarian Tibetan Buddhist center. I took up meditation practice and have been practicing and studying ever since. My entrance into Buddhism seemed very natural, very familiar in some way.   2: I read on your bio you did a solitary retreat? Can you tell us a little b...
Seeing through anger
2007-09-19 02:32:00
Negative emotion, we all have them. So whether your a passive-aggressive who suppresses your anger or a rageaholic that let’s fly at the slightest provocation, anger can be one of the most devastating forces known to humans. In it’s most course form, it is the source of all violence - violence at the domestic, community and international levels. It is the source of ill feeling between work colleagues, family members and even the pain that can occur subtly in our bodies is a result of anger. Anger has no good qualities, it destroys your relationships, your health and can even be the cause of you losing your life. Is letting anger out the correct method? Thanks to modern psychology, it is a commonly held view that we should not suppress anger. Psychologists say that suppressing anger can result in pent up energy, that may explode sometime in the future expressed as rage. While it’s true that suppressing strong emotions such as anger can over a long period have ill ef...

Happiness and it’s causes
2007-09-18 06:02:00
In 2007 His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was a part of an Australian conference called happiness and it’s causes. It brings together clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and Buddhist practitioners. I think this is a wonderful idea having a conference on the causes of happiness is something that really serves the community as a whole well. Don’t you think? I’ve just applied for a press pass as I hope to go up to Sydney and report on the goings on. There are a couple of well known Buddhists speaking, and in particular I would like to see these two.     Matthieu Ricard Shechen Monastery, Nepal Matthieu Ricard is a Buddhist monk at Shechen Monastery in Kathmandu and French interpreter since 1989 for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He received his PhD in Cellular Genetics at the Institute Pasteur in France, before forsaking his scientific career to concentrate on Tibetan Buddhist studies. He received the French National Order of Merit for hi...

The importance of study in Buddhism
2007-09-18 03:06:00
The latest BuddhistGeeks.com podcast was a great show! I was sooooo happy to hear people talking about the importance of studying Buddhist fundamentals. Although it is very important to practice meditation, as meditation is the tool used to integrate what one has learned into ones continuum and therefore your daily life. In reality, without study, how can you meditate properly! It can end up being just a new-age reification of the ego. Which is better than no meditation at all of course. But, if someone is serious about the Buddhist path, study is an integral part of that process of transformation. Throughout Buddhist history study has been an important part of the path. There have been many monasteries such as Nalanda in India where great beings like Nargajuna, Candrakirti, Shantideva, Aryadeva lived and of course the great monasteries of Tibet. If the Pandits of ancient India and the Tibetan lama’s had to study, why do we think we don’t? We can just go straight to...

Lama Zopa Rinpoche says that just study and reading is not enough. If you want Dharma to change your mind and your heart, then you need a tool that can do the job correctly. He said recently… Students who are not interested in retreat and practice should realize if they want something for their heart, if ...
