The Roman church has for a long time believed that only the “clergy” may interpret the Bible. In fact, until recently, they did not even allow translations of the Bible into the common language of the people because they did not believe that ordinary people were equipped to read the Bible, let alone interpret it.Since the Reformation, the Bible has been made available to ordinary people and now anyone in the free world is able to read, study and own Bibles. But the pendulum has swung to the other extreme so that today every Tom, Dick and Harry feels he has the right to interpret the Bible as he feels fit. This is an equal but opposite error to that of the Roman clerical system.It is therefore important that we understand that while each of us has the privilege of reading the Bible for ourselves, no individual has the right to interpret the Scriptures as he wishes. This is a principle that holds true in most areas in life. Carpenters speak about measuring twice and cutting once. We teach our children that when they cross the street they must look left, look right and look left again. There is something that has been troubling me for quite some time...and just when I think I have the answer, I don't. Here is my question...Where do you draw the line between apostasy and just being in error?We all have faults, we all have some degree of error in our beliefs, but what of a person who claims to be a follower of Jesus yet they are wrong on so many things? Some of the basic fundamentals. It does no good to give examples because that's picking and choosing what doctrines are 'acceptable' to err in. (we cannot make that call) If someone is in error on SO many things, then how can they TRULY be in the Word? How can they say they are following Jesus when they believe things that are taught by man? This phrase is getting a lot more 'ear-play' these days and not just from secularists. Some Christians have adopted this phrase in order to get the hearer to let their walls down so the message will be well received. It also has a negative connotation to it which is that preaching is a bad thing.If you are trying to soften up the hearer by prefacing your comment with the “preachy” statement, you must realize that no matter how you spin, twist, or sugar-coat your message, it is not your words that are effective but the power of the Holy Spirit lest you should boast. It's also a subtle form of deception in that you want to give the illusion that you are not preaching, but rather just talking. If you have to disguise the Gospel (or any other Biblical teaching) to someone who doesn't want to hear it in the first place, then they're not going to want to hear it when you dress it up. I was watching TBN the other day (which I rarely do) and I saw this couple singing praises to the Lord. I don't know who they were but they were on stage singing in front of the audience and their voices were so beautiful. There is a teaching, predominantly by OSAS adherents, that our past, present, and FUTURE sins are forgiven. I'm going to give verses that state the contrary. A person who has been born again has the Holy Spirit within him (I Corinthians 2:12). To a Christian , the Bible says, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? The opposite of faith is doubt, or unbelief. We stand strong in Christ by faith (see II Corinthians 1:24); however, the reverse is also true: we fall away from Christ through unbelief.
