Sports Update

We interrupt the regular posting on this blog to bring you the following sports update.   Usually blockbuster trades in Major League Baseball don?t mean much to me. I have been a Detroit Tigers fan since I could say baseball and have never known them to make such trades. One could imagine my wonder and disbelief when ...

Finally, the end of the semester is here, classes are over for this term and it is time to put away the textbooks and note pads. But you know, seminary is not like other colleges or grad schools. When the semester breaks, the students keep going.   For our junior seminarians, it is going to be a ...

One Hundred-Eighty Four

Gray morningsky, the drizzling rain; A deafening noise, a sting of pain. A blink of an eye, your life has changed; theday just begun, they won?t see you again.   One hundred-eighty four   Your God looks down, busy travelers pass; They notice you, there in the grass. Your gaze affixed, On the sheet blood whet; You?re already gone, But you don?t know it yet.   One hundred-eighty four   You see them still, but you can?t hear; Your ...

The Long and Winding Road
2007-11-26 20:47:00
Reading blogs and websites of other Lutheran seminarians, it has become somewhat evident, at least to me, that we Lutherans have a rather involved process when it comes to rostered leadership. I have friends who are also seeking ordination in other denominations (Episcopal, Methodist, Baptist) but it seems to me that they don?t have near ...

A Traditional Thanksgiving
2007-11-22 16:54:00
Thanksgiving Day is one of those times when people look back on their life and remember. They remember family celebrations, traditions and gatherings that served as formative events; making them into the person they are today. As with so many people today, I am reminiscent of those Thanksgiving Day treasures in the past and relive ...

?Stuff?ed for Thanksgiving
2007-11-21 19:54:00
As the day before Thanksgiving progresses, the sights and sounds of a community preparing to stuff the turkey and then itself echoes the strains of a world stuffed with itself as well. Warning, the following post could be viewed as a rant, and I have no idea where it came from or where it is ...

An Evening with Bach
2007-11-19 17:21:00
Last night our adopted church, that is the church we have attended regularly during my time at seminary, hosted their annual Bach Cantata. It is part of their program that joins worship, music and art as a ministry and gift for the community. Each year they host a series of four events with the Bach ...

Gone Fishing
2007-11-19 12:37:00
This is the sermon I preached yesterday in my home congregation.  It was out annual Commitment Sunday when we pledge our time, talent and possessions for ministry in Christ’s name to the Church, community and to the world.  The lessons for this sermon are not the prescribed lection for this particular Sunday of the liturgical year.   Luke 5:1-11, Job 38:1-18   A few years ago, I took my daughters Katie and Rachel fishing for what would be Rachel’s first fishing trip.  By then Katie was a pro and could even cast her own line, but Rachel had no idea what to expect.  All Rachel knew was that we had fishing poles with clear string and sharp hooks on them, a container of worms (she named the ones she caught), and that somehow these worms were going to help us catch fish.  When we got to the lake and Rachel found out how the worms would “help us” she protested and wanted no part of it.   Finally, I convinced her that fish ate worms and that it would be ok.  ...

The Life of a Commuter
2007-11-17 23:31:00
On Sunday last week a friend asked me what it was like to commute every day to seminary.  It is about 1 hour 45 minutes each way and he wondered if I was growing tired of making the drive.  The truth is, there aren’t many days when I dread the trip.  Most times it just flies by.  I guess when you make such a trip so often and for so long, you become conditioned to it.  Any way, I decided that I would post some picks so that those who wonder can see what its like to make the drive up and back.  The first pic is a map of the trip; Interstate 26 from Charleston to columbia and return.  In the morning I usually make it to Orangeburg before I need coffee.  That’s about an hour into the trip. This is pretty much what it looks like most of the way.  At least this time of year there is a bit more color. Once I get to Columbia I have plenty of options depending on traffic.  It’s race week in Homestead, Florida and all of the NASCAR teams made their way south o...

Welcome to Saturday , November 17, 2007   The Game   Today is the day University of Michigan and Ohio State fans have had circled on the calendar for quite some time.  The big game take place in Ann Arbor as it is the Wolverines turn to host their arch rival Buckeyes from that school in the neighboring state to the south.  As with many people, I grew up with this game and even though I don’t reside in Michigan any longer, the game and the rivalry live on in the heart of this fan of the Maize and Blue.   Two of my professors at seminary are huge Ohio State fans so naturally there was a little bit of friendly ribbing going on yesterday.  Our new seminary president happens to be a Michigan man, so it is finally good to have “friends” in high places.  Needless to say, there is plenty of good natured banter reserved for Monday for fans on both sides of the ball.  GO BLUE!     High School Football Playoffs   All good things must come to an end, an...

One of the benefits of seminary life is the way those things one learns enhance your life, in particular one?s spiritual life.
