Creating A Companion Garden
2008-05-06 11:00:00 This week has been great! We had a four day break since there was a public holiday on Thursday (Labour Day) and the whole family has been home. We got out our rubber gloves, our guide to Great Garden Companions and all the garden tools... it was time to start digging! We have been working for 3 days and I must say it is so exciting and very rewarding! After day 2 it looked like this:And after another day of digging and planting, it now looks like this:I must confess, planting seedlings and young plants is so much more rewarding than planting seeds!Although we have planted seeds among the young plants, we will have to have patience and wait to see what it will look like then ;)The whole idea of Companion Gardens is to garden in a natural, biological and environmentally friendly way. No chemicals to get rid of bugs! And of course choosing companions for each type of plant is a vital part of all this. Each crop is grouped with other crops of the same botanical family or according to nut... More About: Food , Gardening , Creating , In The Garden

Update: it's been a while
2008-02-03 02:01:00 I have been very slack in keeping my readers informed on what's going on and when I'd return to writing. Things are quite hectic now and I do not have the time or energy (mentally) to tackle writing on a regular basis.I am studying and will continue to do so for at least the whole of February. This means that my blogs will not be updated regularly until March when all the studying stops and I have settled into a new job and the daily routine that comes with it.All in all I'm quite happy and really excited about what lies ahead, I just don't think that it's a good time to be updating 4 blogs! That would be a bit much.I thank all my readers for stopping by and I thank my subscribers for your patience with my very irregular postings thus far.I cannot wait till this wave has passed and I can return to a regular schedule and blogging once more! Away Until After Christmas
2007-12-22 01:40:00 Just a quick note to let you all know that I'll most probably not be posting much here until after the Christmas holiday. We have many people coming over to our home for an extended period and mom is sick (after many tests, doctors and hospital still don't know what is causing immobilizing pain in her abdomen and back!) so my sister and I have to take over a lot of the jobs she usually does in preparation for the holidays.I thank you all for your loyalty and patience during this period, I know I have not been writing nearly enough and I truly am sorry about that. I have such big plans for these blogs of mine, just dont have the time right now to put it all in writing.May your Christmas be blessed and may the new year bring you joy and success in whatever dreams you are working towards!God bless you.nemo More About: Blogging
How To Make Christmas Stars
2007-12-11 23:50:00 I know I promised the instructions quite a while back, but have not had the opportunity to make more of these until this past weekend. It's not the prettiest star, but you can use your favorite beads and be really creative with these! Click here to view all the Christmas stars I have made so far. Here is the "How To":Thread 3 x 20cm lengths of wire through a 3 or 4mm bead. Whichever has a big enough hole, they vary according to the beads you have.Place the combination, with the wires horizontally, on the table in front of you as shown. Bend one wire from the right side of the bead down and to the left of the bead Bend another wire from the right side up and to the left of the bead.Do the same with 2 wires on the left side, bending them to the right.Twist the 2 wires on each side of the bead so that they are in a fixed position and don't fall out of the bead anymore.Prepare all the beads and tools you will need.Assorted beadsWire cutting pliersPliers for bending wireStart threading ... Knitting Nemo!
2007-12-08 19:53:00 I have started up a craft that has been in my family for many years, generations really... Knitting !My great grandmother first taught me to knit when I was 5 years old. I used to go to her house after pre-school and wait for my parents to pick me up from there after work. I remember rice puddings and smell of the house... it seems like forever ago.I don't remember knitting much after that, until school when in third grade they started us on needlework class. I went to school in South Africa in case anybody is wondering. The girls would do needlework and the boys would be marched off to the workshop to do woodwork! Those were the days... I loved that. The girls would forge great, almost personal with some, relationships with our teachers because of this time together. We would have the radio on softly and talk while we worked on our handcrafted goods.I knitted a coat-hanger cover, red and white, when I was 8. Don't think I did much else at school, probably tried a few more things at... More About: Hobbies , Granny
Oddly, most of my traffic comes from
2007-12-08 19:49:00 I discovered yesterday that, oddly enough, most of my traffic comes from my flickr account!Flickr is a place where you can upload and host your photos, similar to Photobucket and Slide.Even stranger is that this particular photo is generating a lot of traffic towards my recipe blog!Might it be that many people are in search of low fat, healthy foods that are high on the yummy scale? If so this is definitely something to look into. I too am trying to lose weight, well thinking about trying to lose weight... i'm not trying very hard really. And if i could come up with some great low fat yet tasty meals or snacks then i'd be helping out a bunch of people including myself! So back to the traffic flow... I was checking out the stats of my blogs when I realized that my photos are generating the most traffic! Really cool ^_^ I'm happy about that, not sure why though.I love taking photos and I really have a ton of them, I should just be more disciplined at posting them up here on my photo... Feline Obsessions
2007-12-08 16:06:00 I have noticed a strange habit all cats seem to have in common. Our house cats as well as the strays out in the garden love to sit under the washing lines!Could it be the smell of the fabric softener? The fact that the clothes are cold and wet perhaps creating an "air conditioning" that they enjoy?I do not know what it could be, but they all seem to be obsessed with the washing! Now that it is winter and we are hanging our clothes in the house, the house cats come running down the stairs to the clothes lines as soon as they hear you fidgeting with the washing. They sniff, they rub themselves all over the place... it's quite annoying actually since i'm allergic and don't appreciate them putting their fur all over my clean and still wet clothes! The outside cats loved the washing lines too. They are strays and very much afraid of us, yet they would come real close and sit under the washing while i was hanging it! Weird !I've come to think it's either all cats, or it's our fabric sof... Monte Rosa, Italy
2007-12-08 15:46:00 This blog has been in the plans for a while now, a few weeks actually. We had gone on our first day trip with our new 7 seater car in the beginning of the month, and took some amazing photos. There were 4 cameras in totlal that day. We had company too you see, my aunt, uncle and cousin joined us so we were exactly 7!The car was comfy and everybody enjoyed it, well, except my sister, but that's another story which she is more qualified to tell than I am, so you'll have to wait till her new Mac arrives and she starts blogging again.Dad decided to take us to the mountains. We went out early in the morning and returned home really late that night, lots of traveling, but incredible views! This time of the year all the trees are already various shades of red, orange and yellow which contrasted beautifully with the evergreens scattered among them and the cloudless blue skies. The hills looked like patchwork, it was just such a treat to see.It was icy cold in the shade but the sun was warm ... Technical Problems With My Photos
2007-12-08 02:46:00 I apologize to anybody who stops by here only to find all my photos are "currently unavailable" at Flickr .I had made some modifications to my albums using a new toy I found online. It was actually recommended by Flickr! So i did the modifications (adding a little watermark on the photos) and saved them without renaming the photos but it seems something went wrong none the less. I'll try to remedy this terrible error as soon as possible! In the meantime you can read my posts without the images or visit my Flickr albums to see them all - you can choose a set to browse through according to your interests ;)There are a lot of new things coming up in the near future for which i am really excited! Plans for the blog of course. Also for my other 2 blogs: The Christian blog here and the Recipes blog here.Well, it's way past bedtime so I better go.Thanks for stopping by! No More Kitties
2007-11-15 11:49:00 Unfortunately the last little kitty died too. He died at the vet. (30 Oct 2007) We had taken him there at 3am this morning because he refused his food and was vomiting. He was the last of 3 kittens we had rescued from the freezing cold outside last week. It's been a terribly sad and draining week. You pour your heart and time and love out for these little creatures who depend totally on you for survival and then their little tiny bodies just cannot fight the cold or the illness that attacks them. We tried so hard. The vet kept him all day - in the morning he had shown signs of improvement, he was on a drip (IV?) and had antibiotics and they were keeping him warm, but it seems between the cold he had suffered when his mommy abandoned them, the infection in the eyes they all had, the upset tummy and losing his siblings and mommy maybe it was just too much for a little one like that. He was happy yesterday... he purred almost all day. He spent most of the day cuddled in my hand again... More About: Photos , In The Garden , Strays , Cats and Kittens , Kitties
Good News!
2007-11-15 11:47:00 This little one, now named Sharky, is showing signs of improvement! This weekend after his little sibling died moments before entering the Vet, he became all bloated and wouldn't do his toilet business. I was getting worried because it seemed like he was swelling up and I didn't want to overfeed him, but he wanted food! (he bites when he's hungry!) So we returned to the Vet on Sunday (they are open 24hours a day, fantastic!) and they helped him to let it out. Relief! He stopped crying so much and calmed down, he relesed a lot during the night too and today was very very weak it was worrying. He refused food and was looking like we might lose him too, he was really skinny. I was so sad. I prayed for him. Later, around 4pm he suddenly started squealing again and walking around, almost his usual behavior, a good sign. The whole day he had just slept... and purred, but wouldn't eat and could not hold himself up on his feet he was so weak. After the squealing and walking around the p... Grief, Another Kitten Died
2007-11-15 11:36:00 Unfortunately also this little kitty didn't make it. He died today around lunch time. My mom woke me around 11am telling me to call the vet - i ran upstairs and called him, he was out and gave us the number of a clinic to call. We called and explained that he was not responding and breathing was not regular and that our own cat, Kyoko has a sneeze... they told us to bring all our cats in asap. So we jumped in the car with 3 cats, Kyoko plus the last 2 kittens and rushed to the clinic. Unfortunately this little kitty died just before we could get the Vet to see him. Tragic. You know it is such a feeling of uselessness and hopelessness and grief when you have put in so many hours to do your best and take care of this tiny creature and in the end you find that your efforts were either wrong or in either case useless. One vet had told us to feed them every 4 hours, this one told us every 2 hours! The poor kittens were starving but because we didn't know and they didn't squeal we ... She Didn't Make It
2007-11-15 11:31:00 Unfortunately this little kitten did not make it. She died at 4pm today. I was so sad and cried a lot. Had tried so hard to keep her warm and comfortable. Her little legs were no longer strong enough to hold her and she kept toppling over so needed constant care to keep her upright and reposition her legs since she had very little control over them. This photo was taken shortly after lunch when she drank a little milk, but only a little. She died 3 hours later. We think it was a lung problem since she often gasped and yelled throwing her head back.. that's what caused the toppling over. My sister had wanted to keep this little kitten, she was her favorite. She seemed to be the strongest and biggest just a week ago. The mommy cat had taken her out of the box twice in the last week and now we know why. We learned online that cats often remove a kitty if it is ill for fear that the others might get sick too. And that we should not put it back with the others. We did and that was our ... A Kitty Story
2007-11-15 11:28:00 This is a sad story about how I saved one kitten and in the process doomed his siblings... I might have already blogged about how a stray cat had given birth to 2 litters of kittens in our yard this year. I had recently found one of the little kittens from the last litter in a tunnel under some cement slabs out in the cold, crying. The mommy was right there in the garden but didn't seem to mind the little one's squeals so I thought maybe she doesnt know how to save it, maybe she's a bad mommy, maybe she put him there... all sorts of thoughts were running through my head but the most important thing was that this little one was sad and alone and cold and his little siblings were calling for him too! all 3 in a bundle So I removed a cement slab and reached in the tunnel to get him and return him to the box with the other 2. They were all happier after the reunion. ^_^ phew! Tonight, about a week later, we return home late in the dark and hear the little one squealing again so we go... We Found Kittens!
2007-11-15 10:35:00 We have a stray cat in our yard as some of you already know. She had kittens earlier this year (5, but 2 found another home, 3 remained with mommy in our yard) and recently she had 3 more baby ones and has moved them into our laundry room. She found a soft, warm spot in an old wash basin in which we had left our house cat's old blankie in a box. (Yeah, it is a bit messy in there still, we're working on it, still have to paint and tile and fix the windows and door - it's an outside building for those who don't know) So I went to do my washing and found that mommy was not with her babies so I finally got a chance to go up close and touch them! Aren't they just adorable??? The one looking at the camera is a grey tiger. He was awake and his little siblings were sleeping on top of him! As I approached he hissed at me, probably been taught already by mommy that big 2 legged critters are evil. So i ignored him and stroked his head lightly and he kept quiet. So sweet! His little sibl... More About: Photos , In The Garden , Kittens , Strays , Cats and Kittens

My Venus
2007-11-10 00:39:00 I recently bought a Venus Fly Trap. Decided to call her Venus, very original I know!I've been keeping her in my kitchen at the window where she gets lots of sun and heat from the heater nearby and was thrilled to see she was budding until I read online that VFTs should be kept outside and need to go dormant in winter, the budding should happen in June/July not November! My poor Venus thinks it's springtime, now what do I do?
