The Week In Review
2007-12-21 21:55:00 For the first three days of the work week, I was able to enjoy half days at work. I got out of work on Monday through Wednesday at noon. During those days, I attended several holiday safety briefings, a absentee voting briefing, a change of command ceremony, and several other things. The change of command ceremony was to honor a new Command Sergeant Major who is taking charge of the 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) in Washington, DC.As a result of the early release, I was able to spend some extra time at church on Monday afternoon. We have been working at the church to build a new Sunday School building. We are now at the final stages of the project and we hope to be moved into the building by the first of the year...or thereabouts.On Thursday and Friday, however, I was back in Arlington National Cemetery participating in Funerals for soldiers. During my four year tenure at the camp, my fellow staffers and I were constantly challenged to be men. We were encouraged to work hard and play hard. Often times our evening and weekend recreation was crude basic events such as wrestling, boxing, soccer that turned into wrestling, etc. Now, of course, they monitored us to be sure that we were boxing or wrestling out of enjoyment of the sport and not just because we wanted to pummel the other guy. This is the church that I was going to while I was fresh out of Basic Training at Airborne Hold and Airborne School. I was able to go to the church for about eight weeks and I was able to make some great friends. Kim and W.C. Dyess just called me to see how things were going and to update us on what is going on down at the church. They just finished up with Vacation Bible School about two weeks ago and they said it was just fantastic. Anyway, I wanted to mention them on my blog because they were a tremendous blessing to me when I was in Georgia. Most of that grief has come from people who I go to church with. I understand that people discourage Christians from going into this type of work because of the negative influence that you face being a part of it. Settling In and Meeting The Neighbors
2007-08-20 05:55:00 I apologize for my lack of consistent posts. It has been difficult to allocate time to the pursuit of blogging in the midst of the chaos of moving across country. My wife and I continue to appreciate the prayers that many of you have offered on our behalf. We happy to express that we are in the finishing stages of making this our new home. Praise the Lord! After moving just over 550 miles, we are finally beginning to get all of our stuff settled in. We have painted the apartment, organized our furniture, put away all of our laundry, and cleaned the apartment from top to bottom. We have spent the entire week unpacking and cleaning and have made great progress. Running, Reunion, and Relocation
2007-08-13 16:40:00 So far, Washington D.C. has been great. I have seen sights that I have wished for the opportunity to see since I was still in High School. I have jogged down the Potomac River, I have experienced a D.C. style traffic jam, I have even seen a couple of the monuments. I am so excited to be able to serve in the Army in Washington D.C. On Tuesday of last week, my squad leader decided that he wanted to run to the Jefferson Memorial and back while wearing our IBA's (Individual Body Armor). This memorial is just over two miles from where we began running. We ran down the waterfront of the Potomac River, under a gigantic bridge, and over to the memorial. It was amazing! We ran up and down the steps of the memorial for a while before heading back home. It was an exhilarating workout. Does Your Campground Have A Baptist Church?

She wanted to make sure that the campground was fully equipped and modern, but couldn't bring herself to write the word "toilet" in her letter. So, she decided on the old-fashioned term "Bathroom Commode". Once written down she still was not comfortable. Finally she decided on the abbreviation "B.C." and wrote, "does your campground have its own "B.C.?" When the campground owner received the letter, he couldn't figure out what she meant by "B.C." The Journey Of A Lifetime!
2007-08-01 04:06:00 Dear Friends and Bloggers, I left this morning at 7:00 AM and headed toward Washington D.C. I pulled up my route on Google Maps. It directed me through Chicago and onto Interstate 80. It caused me to go through Chicago right at rush hour and it set me back a couple of hours. I was in six lanes of bumper to bumper traffic for a couple of hours. That's alright, though. I love the city so I rolled down my windows and enjoyed the ride. I had a full tank of gas when I left my home town of Franklin Grove, IL, so I didn't have to fill up for $3.40+ a gallon in Chicago. I was able to fill up later in Indiana for about $2.69 per gallon. Woohoo! Anyway, around 7:30 PM, I decided to pull up for the evening with just over two hundred miles left on my trip. I pulled up in a Red Roof Inn and ordered a pizza from Dominoes. I received a phone call from my liaison approximately two hours ago informing me that he had gotten my orders processed and that I would, for sure, be going to Washing ton D.C. I am to report to the 3rd Infantry Regiment, also known as the Old Guard, on Wednesday, August 1, 2007. I will be leaving from Illinois tomorrow morning at about 6:30 A.M. According to Google maps, the trip should take just over thirteen hours. According to the way that I drive, the trip should take less than twelve... Having received this information is such a relief and it is most definitely an answer to prayer. It felt so good to be at home and to see all of our loved ones at the church. Scattered through this post is a pictorial representation of the people we were able to see. The first picture you see on the left is a picture of my brother, Jarod Delhotal. He is a combat veteran who served for a year in the Iraq war a couple of years ago. He received a purple heart for wounds received in combat and a medal of commendation for actions performed on the day he received his wound. I do not know the particular commendation that he has and I keep forgetting to ask him when he is around. A Wonderful End to a Wonderful Week!

We went to a party for a girl in our church who is graduating high school. There were probably thirty or forty people there. Some were playing horse shoes, baseball, and other games. There was food and everyone was talking and catching up. It was really nice. This is a picture of my wife and her sister. I took this picture on Thursday when we were in Iowa visiting her family. I wish that we could have stayed longer and spent more time with them. I have some of the best in-laws that a man could have. How lucky of a guy am I to be able to say that. 2007-07-28 04:17:00 I called the man responsible for having my orders changed today and he explained to me why my orders have not been changed yet. Each day, he would submit my orders to be changed in order to assign me to the job which I have applied for in Washington D.C. Each day the orders would get kicked back. Finally, he called the people who kept kicking them back and asked what was taking place. They told him that they could not process my orders because I had already left Ft. Benning, GA. He told them that he was aware of that situation, but that he still wanted my orders to be processed. Understanding that the orders were supposed to go through despite my having left Ft. Benning, the people told him that they would put them through this time. So...he resubmitted my orders to be reprocessed today and told me to call back on Monday. Vacation: Ten Days of Leave
2007-07-27 05:00:00 My wife and I have been so blessed to be able to find ourselves on ten days of leave. Beginning on July 20 and ending on August 1, we are able to enjoy sleeping in until all hours of the morning, eating ourselves sick, and enjoying the love of our families. On Friday, July 20, I was dismissed at around 1200 hours. That?s noon for you civilians. It couldn?t have come too soon. We set out for Kentucky, which we have been calling home for the two years prior to my enlistment. God has been so good to us to give us so many friends and loved ones in this state. We were able to stay with some friends on Friday night and Saturday night. I spent time with my college friends, professors, church friends, etc. We were able to see so many people during the two days that we were in Lexington. We had a great time. Airborne School
2007-07-07 23:22:00 Well, folks, I just completed week one of airborne school. This is ground week. I spent the week learning proper exit techniques and proper techniques for slamming my body into the ground. We use what we call PLF's (Parachute Landing Falls). This is the process by which we slam our bodies into the ground. We land on the balls of our feet, roll into our calf muscles, our knees, our thighs, and then into our pull up muscles on our upper back. Yeah.I am covered in bruises and am black and blue. But it is a lot of fun. It is way more fun than I ever thought that it would be. Woohoo. This coming week we will be jumping off of the 250 foot tower. And in another week, five jumps from 1200 feet. I have been trapped in a dungeon this week. A prison with white walls and computers, I am tortured by the hum drum tone of Sergeants and Drill Sergeants who have nothing better to do than torture Privates. Ah?but such is my lot in life. I have chosen it and thus I shall continue.On a more positive note, I have been able to register with the University of Phoenix in an effort to begin pursuing a Associates of Arts in Business. The Army will pay for the tuition for up to $4500 dollars per year. The University has programs set up just for military. I should be able to get my Associates in less than 21 months.I have my Bachelor?s degree in Liberal Arts from Commonwealth Baptist College in Lexington, KY with an emphasis on Pastoral Theology. I have begun to wonder if this has become my permanent duty station. Perhaps I can serve out the duration of my four year contract right here in airborne hold on Sand Hill?I sure hope not!I am guaranteed a slot this Friday to ship. Although I will be shipping from airborne hold on Sand Hill, I am hearing through the grapevine that I may get stuck in airborne hold over at the actual airborne school for another week. Hold?hold?hold! That will be a total of five weeks waiting to attend this school. Talk about backed up!That?s alright with me. This is the easiest duty station I have yet to encounter and the easiest I will probably ever encounter. It is, however, quite boring. Every morning we do a thorough hour or so of physical training.
