The Heretic in Me
2007-12-19 18:17:00
I’m beginning to scare myself. Why? Long held doctrines that I’ve held unswervingly to for years and years are beginning to teeter in my mind. I can’t decide if this is good or bad, but one thing is for sure…it’s making me more humble. (You know you’re humble when you can brag about it.) I’ve been ...

Planting Sterile Churches
2007-12-17 20:57:00
Last week I wrote about sterile preaching. Today, I want to direct you to a site I discovered today about church planting which has an excellent post on “Sterile Church es” that is, churches that don’t reproduce. Here is an excerpt from the article that put into words what I have been thinking: I want to show ...

Preach the Word?
2007-12-14 20:54:00
One of the things I love most about being a pastor is preaching the Word . For years, I have thought that a church can get by without music, without a building, without programs, without youth groups and children’s programs, but a church is not a church if it doesn’t preach the Word. But upon deeper reflection, ...

Fishing for Men?Literally

Some men go fishing, and sometimes, fish go “menning.” Either way, this is how real men fish: If you want to read more about what they are doing, check it out here: Catfish Noodling

Preaching until we?re Sterile
2007-12-13 01:14:00
I preached my LAST seminary sermon today. Yay! Though I have learned a lot about preaching while I am in seminary, I hope I can forget most of it. If I had to preach for the rest of my life within the box that is the seminary sermon, I would quit the ministry. Sadly, I ...

Why ask Why?
2007-12-11 21:50:00
Sometimes our church traditions can get in the way of doing what we?re supposed to be doing. For example, I am not convinced that it is wise for most churches to have buildings, meet on Sunday morning, and be ?non-profit.? Sure, there are times when these things make sense. But in many ways today, such practices are only ...

My Traditional Christmas Movie
2007-12-10 21:57:00
One of my Christmas traditions during the weeks leading up to Christmas is to watch the six hour movie “Lonesome Dove” with Robert Duvall, Danny Glover, and Tommy Lee Jones. Last night, my wife and I sat down and watched Part 1. Afterwards, as we were sitting on the couch, a little depressed from all the people dying, the women being treated like trash, and the overall view in the movie that life is cheap, my wife said, “Of all the traditional Christmas movie s, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, A Christmas Story, why do you watch this movie? It’s so depressing.” I looked at her and said, “I have no idea. It’s just what I’ve always done.” Upon further reflection, this tradition began for me around 15 years ago. I think that the local television station showed this movie on television around the Christmas season for two or three years, and then my mother bought me the tapes for my birthday one summer, and after that, it was just something I did during Christma...

Church Planting with Will Smith - Part 3
2007-12-07 15:55:00
Today is the third and final installment on things I’ve learned about church leadership and church planting from Will Smith .  Yesterday we looked at the first five. Here are the last five: 6. Understand ideas, and which ideas move people.Smith says that when studying movies, and which ones are popular, he tries to back up and get ...

Church Planting with Will Smith - Part 2
2007-12-06 21:05:00
Yesterday I reminisced about Will Smith and his transformation from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Will Smith of Hollywood. In the December 10, 2007 issue of TIME magazine, there was a writeup about Will Smith and how this transformation occurred. What is Will’s secret? Intentionality. Will Smith says that this is all according to plan. TIME ...

Church Planting with Will Smith
2007-12-05 19:57:00
I’ll admit it. When I was in Jr. High, I listened to “DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.” My friend, Jason Schuyler, and I listened to all of his tapes. (CD’s were just coming out, and I didn’t own a “walkman.”) His rap was just what Jr. High white boys in Montana liked: it was smooth, funny, and ...

Who is the Church Service For? (Part 3)
2007-12-04 22:19:00
We previously asked the question, “Who is the church service for - believers or unbelievers?” (See Part 1 and Part 2). We saw that depending on how you answer that question determines whether you are going to focus on teaching believers or reaching out to unbelievers (aka seekers) in your “church service.” However, statistics and ...

What is the Church Service?
2007-12-03 18:35:00
I am not sure how the hour from 11:00-12:00 on Sunday morning (or whenever you “go to church”) became known as “The Church Service .” Probably, the term is too ingrained in our church culture to change it, but it is one of the most tragic misnomers of Christianity. First of all, little actual service takes place. If we ...

Tag, You?re It!
2007-11-30 07:47:00
Daniel over at Messy Pastor tagged me to reveal seven things about myself that not many people know. That’s a creative idea, so here we go: 1. I am a cat lover, and can’t stand dogs unless they act like cats (small, sit on your lap, don’t bark…). Sadly, I don’t have a cat right now…had to ...

My Wife and Jesus
2007-11-28 17:31:00
Every man must brag about his wife from time to time. My wife, Wendy, does not know I am doing this, so keep it “hush-hush.” All Christians from time to time struggle with how to know God more intimately. There is a wide segment of Christianity which says that if you really want to know God ...

Are you one of the brightest and best? Plant a church!
2007-11-28 02:14:00
Church planting is the way to go today. Here is an article about modern church planting from The Leadership Network. Average number of baptisms or conversions in a church plant is 10 the first year, 11 the second year, 13 the third year and 14 the fourth year. Church planting in the United States appears to ...

How can we do church?
2007-11-27 21:57:00
We saw yesterday that we cannot go to church. Others in the world have come to understand this as well, and have started telling Christians to “Stop going to church…instead be the church.” Though shocking to some, it is right on target for how we need to be thinking. We cannot “get credit” for church ...

What is church?
2007-11-26 07:11:00
Most of the problems regarding how to “do church” and what goes on “in church” could nearly be solved by simply answering the question “What is church?” It seems that most of us believe that church is something we do on Sunday morning. It is where we meet God, and therefore, we have to dress up to ...

Who is the Church Service for? (Part 2)
2007-11-21 21:32:00
Yesterday we looked at the two most common formats for church services. Some focus on teaching and training Christians, while others focus on reaching out to unbelieving seekers. Both have weaknesses. Teaching churches focus on training Christians, but do a relatively poor job of reaching the lost. They will often say that outreach and evangelism is the ...

Who is the Church Service for? (Part 1)
2007-11-20 18:03:00
One question I have been mulling over recently is “Who is the church service for - believers or unbelievers?” Those who answer “believers” will often have church services that cater to the needs and desires of Christians. There will be an emphasis on programs and teaching that meet the needs of Christians. The sermons will ...

Wanted: Free Grace Church Planting - Part 2
2007-11-19 16:04:00
The previous post talked about how there are lots of church planting networks, but many of them are opposed to Free Grace Theology. Some have e-mailed in asking why we even need to plant churches. (By the way, if you have something to say/ask, go ahead and use the comment box rather than e-mail me.) ...

Best Innovations 2007
2007-11-08 19:51:00
I always wanted to be an inventor. I even have a notebook at home full of “Million Dollar Ideas” (Which probably means that they would cost a million dollars to invent, and not make any money!). When I graduated from high school, my plan was to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and then invent stuff. ...
