David Fleer recently sent me information about the 10th Annual Rochester College Sermon Seminar, which was hot off the presses. This year?s program, which is planned for May 21-23, 2007, is entitled: ?Preaching and the World Imagined in John?s Gospel.? It looks like one of the best line up?s yet. While I?ve not been able to attend every seminar, I?ve taken in most of them. Lord willing, I?ll be there this year. This seminar provides a time for ministers, professors, and students to interact with accessible, substantive, and faithful presenters. For a complete list of presenters, click here. For others it is simply a desire to spread good cheer during the Christmas season. I was prompted to think about this by a post over at Keith Lancaster’s blog. He asked readers to share stories about “baptizing time”. As a father of four children whom I have had the joyous privilege of baptizing, these memories are certainly the most precious. Each was special for different reasons. My youngest was baptized near the conclusion of a week at Bible camp. My wife and I received word that she wished to be baptized late on a Friday night. Upon our arrival at the camp early on a Saturday morning at about 1:00 a.m., I was thrilled to baptize that last of our four children. Please know that the baptism of each child remains special, as each one continues to live by the Spirit and walk with the Lord. There have also been some humorous baptismal events. One in particular comes to mind. I?m not a big guy?about 5?8?. At the time this occurred I weighed about 170 pounds. (Those were the days.) It was the dead of winter. Sitting at the computer far away from home? At this very moment I?m sitting in a hotel room in Oceanside, California. Although I?ve passed this city on Interstate 5 a few times through the years, the last occasion in which I spent any time here was 30 years ago. This is when, as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, I was stationed at Camp Pendleton. It?s hard to believe that so much water has passed under the bridge. But, it has. Something that a stranger said? Those who know me very well, know that I?ve never met a stranger. Well, most people I meet aren?t strangers for long. That?s what a couple from Oak Grove, Minnesota learned. On Wednesday afternoon, during our ride in the shuttle bus from the airport to Enterprise Auto Rental, I learned that they are in Oceanside to attend the graduation of their youngest son from Marine Corps training. We were the only three people on the bus. So our conversation flowed freely. Hence, I also learned they have two sons and a daughter. They were both r...

A few minutes ago I was returning home from dropping off my daughter and two of her friends at the home of another friend. They were planning a night of fun watching videos and whatever else four teenage girls do to stay up to the wee hours of the morning. Maybe they will go to separate rooms and text one another. Their night of fun is to be followed by a day of fun. They are going shopping at one of the largest malls on the east coast. Personally, I would just as soon take a trip to the dentist as visit a busy mega-mall on a Saturday this close to Christmas. But, my daughter assures me that the madness is part of the fun. Does anyone understand this? Well, back to the point. I was driving along one of the many dark, tree-lined, winding roads near our home. As I motored along, I remembered a tragedy that occurred on this section of road a few years ago. Every time I pass this way I remember this event.
