Darkness, Where Art Thou?
2007-07-03 11:54:00
Enough of the constant daylight! I miss the darkness of night and seeing the glow of lights against the black horizon. Looking out into the woods and listening on a breezy evening—man, nothing compares. I am so looking forward to Fall already.

Summer
2007-06-12 08:28:00
It never gets dark here in Fairbanks in the summer. But you probably already knew that. The other night I was driving Bren’s boyfriend home at 11 p.m. and was searching frantically for my sunglasses because the sun was so intense. At home I have only gotten black-out curtains for the master bedroom so that Rick can sleep, but now I can’t sleep in there because it’s too darn warm, even with the fan on. With the thermostat all the way down the heater is still coming on and we’re baking (must call housing maintenence!). I’ve taken to sleeping in the guest room (Hear that folks? GUEST ROOM. I have room for anyone who would love to visit Alaska). This morning I woke up still feeling tired after having gone to bed at 2 a.m. The sun was very bright shining in the window. I guessed it was about 11 a.m., but I didn’t want to look at the clock. Right then reveille sounded. Ahhhhhh, only 7 a.m. I slept for three more hours. The point of ...

Prom happened while I was gone—away from blogging that is. Bren is just a freshman, but her boyfriend (yes, I said boyfriend) is a junior and invited her to his prom. The whole process of preparing The Girl for the big event was quite fun, and Bren and I managed to get through it with nary a dressing room knock-down-drag-out episode, a welcome departure from our norm. Both The Girl and The Guy looked fabulous and had a memorable evening, but Bren has informed me that this was her first prom, and most likely, it was her last. Whew. Tomorrow is the last day of school here. Bren only has to show up to take her final for drama and do some T.A. work for her drama teacher. Bren is still far from complete with her course work, so she will continue to be busy, although with her bum firmly planted in one spot, held in place by stacks of books. She has also signed up to take another college class. Thankfully the class is being offered here on base, so we don’t have to...

Somber Day
2007-04-17 08:37:00
It was a sad day watching the coverage of the shooting at VT today. When I dropped Bren off at school I hugged her a long time then watched as she entered the school. I then parked in the teacher’s parking lot and let my fear out in tears and prayer for a few minutes. Sometimes I just need to stop and let the Lord remind me I can trust Him completely with my baby. Talking with my mom always makes me feel better too :) Thanks for your email Dylan.

It is half past eight on this Sunday morning. Rick is downstairs on the couch reading his economics text book, making mad dashes to the restroom every so often. Food poisoning? We won’t be going to church today. Bren is still in bed and will most likely remain horizontal until noon if I let her. She had a busy day yesterday working on the drama set from 2 – 10 p.m. after having a job interview for a junior counselor position at a summer science camp. The interview went very well, but she didn’t get the job which bummed her out big-time. Then there’s the guy thing. (more…)

I was sweating it there for a minute, not sure if I could even remember my login and password for my blog. I’m so glad Windows kept my stuff in memory. I can’t believe I have been gone for so long. It was a blogging sabbatical I did not plan…honest. It was torture actually; wanting to write, but being unable to. Writer’s block? No, more like Emotional block. (Have I ever mentioned I have A LOT of baggage? Probably not, but then most of you have known me a long time and are well aware of my character flaws—and that you still love me just baffles me sometimes!) Life has been good. In the grand scheme of things, our problems are very little; our stressors barely a blip on the radar. We are blessed way beyond what we deserve. On the small scale however, our hearts are grieved over a situation that we created (for the most part) ourselves and caused emotional pain to another person. That’s what tends to happen when a Christian rationaliz...

:o) I finally have a computer back and am chock full of stuff to blab about—but right now I must wake a sleep starved teenager and get us off to bible study. Life is busy. Life is good. I pray you are all well.

Now, Where Was I?…
2007-02-16 01:26:00
Seattle. Our five days in Seattle were a whirlwind, made much more enjoyable by a little red Mustang rental car. I grinned like a teenager when the guy handed me the keys. Sports cars never did much for me visually, but those engines….Now I know what the fuss is all about. Cancer. Spending hours every day for three days in a cancer treatment hospital was very sobering. Bald heads. Weak bodies. Hopeless expressions. Fear. Angels in white coats. The level of care and compassion in the hospital staff was a bit of a shock to me after a lifetime of militalry hospitals. It was amazing to see and feel. Friend. Leah and I got to know each other better, as women who share a hotel room for a week are likely to do. She is strong and funny and insanely clean. I love her more now than I did a week ago. Leah and her husband returned to Seattle on Monday and she underwent a double mastectomy yesterday. We, along with others in our church family and her mother, are ...

Shifting Into Fourth
2007-02-01 20:56:00
Never mind the squealing tires on the pavement; that was just me screeching to a halt when I spotted a free hour in which I had nothing to do and no distractions. I dropped the girls off at the university for class then made my way straight over to The Mother Ship for coffee, and blogging on the laptop. Good combo. I now have only 45 minutes so I’d best get to it. Bren has been very busy lately which has been keeping me busy shuttling her to and fro. School work, Sign Language, drama and rehersals, dog-sitting, and other extra-curriculars forced me into buying Bren a planner because I’m about to throw a wrench into the well-oiled machine by leaving town for five days (I leave on Monday). My friend Leah has to fly to Seattle for some tests and asked me if I would go along for company and to do the driving. I doubt I’ll receive a better invitation than that this year! Although I’m not looking forward to leaving my family for five days, I’m sur...

Not much going on today. In the interest of mother-daughter relationship preservation, I’m taking Bren to town for a 45-minute math tutoring session after drama this afternoon. She has no patience with me trying to explain algebra to her and we always end up mad at each other when I try, so I’m taking advantage of the free help. Since we’re going to be in town I told Bren she can take her books and finish her lessons at The Mother Ship. We were going to see a movie with our friend Abbie , but that was contingent on Bren finishing her school work today which she didn’t. I don’t think she minds though, as she loves a change of scenery while doing her studies. That’s one of the great benefits of homeschooling. Rick will be home with the poopers studying for an online class he’s just begun. It is in the 20’s today and it feels wonderful! Bad Dog Neezy is mad at me because I left her outside for two hours this afternoo...
