5 Short Reasons Why The Bible Alone Does Not Work
2007-07-28 22:36:00 Can you think of a single Christian Church that openly denies the importance of the Sacred Scriptures? If not, that's probably because they don't exist. Christians, even pseudo-Christian-wacky-cultish-types,&nbs p;at all times have believed that the Bible is the inspired and inerrant word of God. A pillar of faith, its role has been essential to the life of those who wish to follow the teachings of Christ, and his promise of salvation. However, many Christian denominations hold that the Bible is all we need to know the will of God, and can be interpreted by the individual laymen. There are five problems with this view, each ending in inevitable disunity and ambiguity: 1. It is relativistic My interpretation is the truth. Just like yours. Self-interpretation eventually leads to relativistic hermeneutics. That is, anyone's interpretation is a good interpretation, but the most accurate interpretation is the one that most closely reflect... More About: Work , Reasons , Short , The Bible

The Fray: How to save a life
2007-02-14 03:11:07 I’m sure that most of you that listen to Christian rock have heard this song many times over, but I had to put it on my site. The Fray is one of the few Christian artists to steer away from the Christian record labels in order to be heard by the mainstream music media. Along with other bands like Switchfoot and MuteMath, they were not pigeon holed into one genre of music, and are now able to reach and evangelize a wider audience. Hopefully, more Christian bands do the same! fanatholicarum More About: Life , How To , Save
The Dark Side of Pottery
2007-02-11 03:09:07 Just about everyone, Catholic and Non-Catholic, is somewhat familiar with Jeremiah 18:1-6. It is the famous “Hands of the Potter ” passage in which God explains that he shapes our very lives as a potter shapes a mound of clay. It is a very touching analogy, and is used time and again in many homilies to show how God is lovingly shaping our lives. But I’ve yet to hear anything from the pulpit that refers to the bad news of this great piece of scripture. Do you know the bad news? Let’s contemplate what a potter does. A potter takes a moist, shapeless mound of clay and sets it on his spinning wheel. He then, through much skill, begins to slowly gives it three things. His first goal is to give the clay a pleasant appearance. Beauty is what makes it pleasing and acceptable to others, and makes it worth buying and using. Nobody likes an ugly pot, no matter how useful it is. Secondly, the potter gives his object functionality. He determines what this objec... More About: Dark , The Dark , Side , Otter
Favorite Christian Artists: Cross Movement
2007-02-08 03:07:01 Alright, I’m back for a bit. I’ve got to share this group with everyone. Cross Movement is a Christian Rap group that has been around for a while. They have a lot of great songs, and this one in particular is just fun. The song is called “Know Me” and is reminiscent of secular artists such as DJ Quick. The lyrics are explosively fast, and the beat is non-stop. These guys are great! fanatholicarum More About: Artist , Men , Artists
The One Thing Necessary
2007-02-01 03:02:03 Some of you may be wondering why I haven’t been updating my blog as regularly as normal. Well, the reason is because I am trying to do the one thing necessary. I’m trying to stop being a busy bee that’s always trying to do something, and stop at our Lord’s feet and know Him. Throughout my life I have constantly tried to know about God, rather than trying to get to know Him. A line from Thomas A’Kempis has been ringing in my ear for the past few days, “What does it matter if you can explain everything about the Trinity, and yet displease the Trinity by your actions?” I’ve been feeling the need to get away from books and writing in order to spend more time with the person I am writing about. Will I continue with the blog? Of course, but I feel I will be much more effective in writing if I take a step back. So, for a short while I will be updating the blog less. However, if anyone has any questions about God, morality, or anything... More About: Essa , Thing , The O

The Seven Deadly Virtues: Humility
2007-01-24 14:54:01 Virtues (If you know what that word means. It’s hardly used anymore) are deadly. Not in the same way as vices, but they do kill you. What I want to do is help you understand the virtues that once were, and the only way to do that is for you to die. Are you shocked? You shouldn’t be. Saint Paul said “To die in the Lord is gain,” and that’s exactly what we are going to do. I hope by now the shock has worn off and you realize that I do not mean for you to physically cease to be. Physically dying would be a much easier but much less fruitful task. No, what we want to do is empty ourselves, to the point that we lose ourselves. Why would we want to do that? Well, let’s take a look at who we are. We are all selfish, self-righteous, prideful, arrogant, unloving, lying, envious and jealous people. In other words, “somethin’ done went wrong with us.” Do you not find any of those traits in you? If you don’t, please send m... More About: Dead , Seven , Virt , Virtue , Humility
Pro-Life Vs. Pro-Choice Logic: Skepticism
2007-01-24 14:54:01 One of the popular arguments made by those who are supporters of a woman’s “right to choose” is the fact that we don’t know for sure whether or not the fetus is a living human person. Many Christians find this argument to be simply repulsive. The pro-lifer says “How can anyone say that it is not a life? It’s displaying characteristics of life from the very beginning of conception! And if the embryo was made by two humans, then it logically follows that this is human life.” The pro-choicer responds, “But we cannot know for sure that it is a human life. It is only a blob of cells at conception, and until the fetus grows a brain, it can’t even feel anything. Unless their’s proof that it’s a human being at conception, then there is nothing wrong with abortion.” I hate to admit it, but those that are on the pro-choice side of the battle lines are right. They are not correct that abortion is not morally repre... More About: Life , Skeptic , Skepticism , Pro-Life , Choice

Parents, keep your hands to yourself!
2007-01-24 14:54:01 The latest on a new non-spanking bill in being pushed in California from Mercury News: SACRAMENTO - The state Legislature is about to weigh in on a question that stirs impassioned debate among moms and dads: Should parents spank their children? Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, D-Mountain View, wants to outlaw spanking children up to 3 years old. If she succeeds, California would become the first state in the nation to explicitly ban parents from smacking their kids. Making a swat on the behind a misdemeanor might seem a bit much for some — and the chances of the idea becoming law appear slim, at best — but Lieber begs to differ. “I think it’s pretty hard to argue you need to beat a child 3 years old or younger,'’ Lieber said. “Is it OK to whip a 1-year-old or a 6-month-old or a newborn?'’ The bill, which is still being drafted, will be written broadly, she added, prohibiting “any striking of a child, any corporal punishment, smacking, hi... Sorry. . . No card, no food.
2007-01-24 14:54:01 Thanks to Esther for this one: Catholics in the UK are now starting to carry cards that alert their doctors that they would like to have fluids and food given to them should they be admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately, food is now seen as extraordinary means of keeping someone alive. Many doctors in the UK have ordered that all of the cafeterias be closed within many of the hospitals. Patients are reminded that healthy visits are brief visits. (Ok I’m joking about the closing of cafeterias. Tangible food is not considered an extraordinary means of keeping a conscious patient alive. . . yet.) Response From a Reader Concerning the Capital Punishment
2007-01-02 02:49:02 The following is a response from a reader in the comment section. His words are in blue, while mine shall remain in black. Pope John Paul II made significant errors within his Evagelium Vitae, with regard to the death penalty and, as a result, those teachings should not have been enterred into the Catechism. Please review. I am not a theologian, so I won’t be able to go into Evangelium Vitae extensively. However, I do find it puzzling that those who are for a more liberal use of the death penalty by the state tend to say that Pope John Paul II was absolutely in error in the writing of the encyclical, and thus we do not have to take his words as authoritative. Or better yet, that an encyclical itself is not infallible, therefore we don’t have to follow it’s teaching. I would remind my fellow Catholics that, although an encyclical is not necessarily an infallible declaration, it is still very much authoritative. Pope Pius XII states...
