Pursue pleasure: it’s the natural way to do good in the world
2007-03-18 17:24:00 Pursue pleasure: it’s the natural way to do good in the world-News-UK-TimesOnline The philosopher AC Grayling touches upon a subject which comes up time and time again in discussions between theists and atheists in his article featured in today’s Times. Atheists often have their moral values questioned, asked ‘how can you be moral if you don’t believe in God and the Bible?’ It’s a silly question on so many levels yet for some reason theists don’t seem able to grasp that morality is not exclusive to those that read the Bible or accept ‘Jesus into their hearts’. The only way in which you can make this argument is by accepting that the Bible does actually teach moral values and gives us a moral framework to base our lives on. Many theists have not even read the Bible. How can they then suggest that their morals are based upon biblical teaching? The Bible is also open to interpretation which makes it difficult to claim that it is a def... More About: World , Natural , The N , The World , Good
Ali G and Borat on Religion and Politics
2007-03-18 13:43:00 Following on from an earlier Ali G post, here are a couple of funnies for a Sunday morning. First we have Ali G speaking to religious representatives and getting them to rap This one is from the Borat film where Borat interviews James Broadwater, a Republican candidate. Wait till the end where he talks to the women about voting For some reason, after that interview they still invited him to a Republican event. And the last one, Borat turns to Christianity. Trickle Up Atheism
2007-03-16 22:06:00 David who runs the ‘Atheist Self’ blog touched on article in the LA Times by Sam Harris. David says: “One day in the next hundred years, the average American will look around at the few, small religious groups left, and see nothing but cults. I don’t think there will be a big fight to the finish, I just think that people are getting smarter, and getting smart leads to stronger reasoning skills and fewer irrational beliefs.” I have to strongly disagree and I think it’s dangerous to assume that as people get smarter, they will think more rationally and move away from religion. Some of the smartest people on the planet are theists and have a belief in God. Granted some, as Dawkins often says, when pressed, don’t really hold the beliefs that you or I feel are dangerous, but nonetheless, I don’t think higher intelligence results in an automatic move away from religion, those people are just able to make better excuses than the rest. The Blind Watchmaker
2007-03-16 01:01:00 As anyone who has read it will know, ‘The Blind Watch maker’ by Richard Dawkins is an amazing read. I’ve just found a BBC Horizon video documentary entitled The Blind Watchmaker and somewhat related to the book on YouTube. It’s in two parts and great stuff. Doesn’t Dawkins look young? Sullivan is Back…Responds to Harris
2007-03-15 18:58:00 After a short break, the continuing discussion between Sam Harris and Andrew Sullivan is back. I thought that Andrew Sullivan would find it difficult to continue with the discussion after Sam’s previous post. It seemed like checkmate, with Sullivan trying to grasp at something to help him come back at Sam. I don’t think much has changed. Andrew Sullivan (as I’ve said before) is a fantastic writer, human being and seems like an all round great guy. I’ve always found it extraordinary that he can be as religious as he is yet still hold the views that he does, especially as he’s amazingly intelligent and a big critical thinker in other areas of his life. It seems as if Sullivan is really finding it difficult to justify his faith and his beliefs. He came out very strong and first and he’s retreating to a more moderate position. I’m not sure this has anything at all to do with Harris, I think it’s down to the fact that as a highly intelligen... More About: Back , Pond , Hell , Arri
God’s Dupes
2007-03-15 16:17:00 Moderate believers give cover to religious fanatics - and are every bit as delusional. Sam Harris has just written a short article in the LA Times which focuses on the problems that religious moderates cause. He states: “Christian moderates, by their lingering attachment to the unique divinity of Jesus, protect the faith of fundamentalists from public scorn. Christian liberals — who aren’t sure what they believe but just love the experience of going to church occasionally — deny the moderates a proper collision with scientific rationality. And in this way centuries have come and gone without an honest word being spoken about God in our society.” It’s a nice article which tackles a question that I’m always asked. “What’s wrong with religious moderates? What harm are they causing? Why not let them believe whatever they want, it doesn’t matter if it’’s silly”. Sam finishes with a great line: “Everything of va...
“We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself.”
2007-03-15 01:01:00 Today I took delivery of the Carl Sagan Cosmo s DVD boxset. I’ve not had time to get through very much but it’s astoundingly brilliant. Unfortunately I never saw it when it was first released and I’m so glad I’ve managed to get hold of it now. I was wondering whether it would be worth it and how much of it would still be relevant today. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. It’s fantastic. Everything from the beautiful score, the imagery and of course the wonderful Carl Sagan makes this a must have. Both Sagan and Ann Druyan have this unique way of telling a story, taking a different perspective to the rest of us, they’re more reasonable and thoughtful (less belligerent than some of us) yet manage to make their points with incredible power. One thing that Sagan manages to convey with devastating affect in everything he does is that we should appreciate life as an incredible gift, so brief in the vastness of time that it’s ... NU Professor Wins $1.5M Religion Prize
More articles from this author:2007-03-14 18:05:00 A Northwestern University philosophy professor received the world’s richest religion prize today. Charles Taylor, a Canadian philosopher who for nearly half a century has explored the spiritual origins of violence and bigotry, will receive $1.5 million from the John Templeton Foundation, which awards progress and research in spiritual matters. “The divorce of natural science and religion has been damaging to both,” Taylor said in accepting the award in New York today. “But it is equally true that the culture of the humanities and social sciences has often been surprisingly blind and deaf to the spiritual, and that in my case, the attempt to break down these barriers is being recognized and honored.” “For more than 45 years, he has argued that relying solely on secularized viewpoints only leads to fragmented, faulty results. He has said such an approach only perpetuates clashes of culture, morality, nationalities and religions.” Tags: news, O... More About: Religion , Ligi , Prof , Gion , Esso 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 |
