Today we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady, the Theotokos
2006-08-15 19:48:01 Today we remember a deed of power: Our Lord Jesus Christ called his Mother to himself, in body, soul, and spirit. For Catholic Christians this means something simultaneously simple and grandiose: that the resurrection of the dead has been verified in Mary, the Mother of Jesus and Our Mother. She has received her crown, and she is as close to God as a mere creature can get, closer to Him than the Seraphim and the Cherubim. The Church rightly sings:You are truly deserving of glory, O Theotokos, the ever-blessed and most pure Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who as a Virgin gave birth to God the Word, true Birth-giver of God, we magnify you.The Church also rightly prays:Under your protection, we hasten, O Virgin Birth-giver of God. Do not turn away from us in our time of need, but pure and blessed Lady , save us!Redemption has been completed: A Man redeemed Mankind by dying on a cross and restored our life by rising... Angels - in Heaven, on Earth and in Hell
2006-08-14 19:45:02 by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.Divine Revelation has established the existence of a created world of Spirits. Angel s were created by God and are now living in Heaven , sympathetic and helpful to the needs of men, or in Hell where they exist to seduce the human race from allegiance to the Creator. The existence of Angels; their spiritual nature; the fall of the evil Spirits of their own free will; the role of the devil in the fall of man, are doctrines of faith proclaimed by the Church and by the 4th Lateran Council, 2nd Council of Lyons, the Councils of Florence, and Trent, and the 1st Vatican Council. The Old Testament books early speak of Angels but are always careful in their expressions to steer away from any possible idolatry, so closely related were the Angels to God that they were sometimes erroneously thought of, as attributes of God. Even during Christ?s life the Sadducees denied the existence of Angels. In the Books of Daniel and Tobit we see Angels in their full glory. Gabriel i... More About: Earth

A God of Mercy
2006-08-06 19:33:02 A Homily of Fr. Matthew Kelty, O.C.S.O. for the 2nd Sunday of Easter (B): (Jn 20:19-31)] This is Divine Merc y Sunday, declared such by John Paul II, April 30, 2000. I offer you a few thoughts this morning on three people who were connected with the city of Cracow in Poland. The three are John Paul II, Sister Marie Faustina Kowalska and Rudolph Hess. They were not precisely contemporaries, but people of our time. John Paul, Karol Wojtila, was made bishop of Cracow in 1963, a cardinal in 1967, and Pope in 1978. Sister Faustina died in 1938, a Sister of Our Lady of Mercy. Rudolph Hess was executed in Cracow in 1947. It was the Archbishop of Cracow, Karol Wojtila, who asked one of his local theologians to do a critical analysis of the writings of the Sister. Fr. Ignatius Rozycki was unwilling to do so because for many years he had deep suspicions about the reputed sanctity of Sister Faustina, and above all with regard to the revelations attributed to her. He thought her a simple woma... More About: God |
