My name is Ashraf. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I used to belong to the privileged White minority. I used to have only three brothers, but now I have more than a billion brothers and sisters!When describing my Islam, I always call myself a new Muslim and will till the day I die! I am very uncomfortable and feel insulted when described as a revert or a convert ? I'll admit, the way I decide to learn more about Islam was quite silly. But alas, I am thankful for it, for it brought me to where I am now. I had been watching The Daily Show on Comedy Central one night, and the guest on the show was none other than Reza Aslan. He was talking about his book, No god but God and not only was he incredibly eloquent and intelligent, but I couldn't help but recognize that he is also very very good-looking. He sparked my interest, and the next day I went out and bought his book at the local bookstore.I finished it in just a few days, and quickly became enlightened by the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was so liberal and tolerant, no, not just tolerant, but accepting of everyone. Even those he knew were not on his side, he loved and accepted them, and never turned people away. I was born into a very traditional Catholic family that observes and practices all kinds of innovations that are not even related to the real teachings of the Bible. All of my family, from my great grandparents to the youngest grandchildren, are all Catholic and most of my friends and neighbors were also Catholic.Although some of my family believe in one God, this "One God" is sometimes called Jesus, and at other times, the Father. This was a bit confusing for me.In my opinion, the Catholic way of life is not really strict, although there are many clear laws found in the Bible that we should follow and practice. Despite this, I didn't feel much pressure to follow those rules because we were taught that God can forgive all sins the moment you repent sincerely to Him. This idea is similar to the teachings of Islam, but the difference is that, in Islam, everyone will be accountable and responsible for their own sins; whereas in Christianity, Jesus has already paid for everyone's sins...

I have chosen Islam (which means submission to Allah) as my truth to ?what is the purpose of my existence?? I was introduced to Islam through my intention of marriage to a friend whose religion was Islam. Therefore, it could be said that love introduced me to Islam. Two soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade, Sean Blackwell and Brett Duggan converted to Islam. I?m so proud of them and thanks to Allah SWT. Following them, George Douglas also declared (May 30, 2005) his new faith at Fallujah Mosque and changed his name to Mujahed Mohammad. He has become the fourth U.S. soldier who embraces Islam.
