After following 48,835 postmenopausal women for eight years, scientists concluded that cutting fat from the diet doesn't significantly reduce the incidence of breast or colorectal cancer, heart disease, or stroke. There's another, even more unusual thing about him, though; he's been impotent his entire life. Why have I been reduced to looking on eBay for something that every department store has hundreds of? My mother is to blame for that; thanks to her training, my purse contains every item I could possibly need when away from the house... including folding scissors (for dangling threads), a mini tape measure (so I can determine the sizes of furnishings that might fit in my mostly-unfurnished house), and a little calculator (to figure out tips at restaurants). 2007-01-06 12:07:00 Last Saturday, I heard a BANG on the kitchen window; despite my having hung so many suncatchers on it that it barely lets in any light, the birds still fly into the bare spots pretty frequently, so this didn't alarm me at 1st... until I looked up from the computer to see a little tweetie lying motionless on the air conditioner. I lunged to the sliding glass door to see if he was moving; usually they're just stunned and fly away after a few minutes, but sometimes they don't recover before it gets dark and have to be put up in a tree so they don't spend the night on the ground (at least until the cats show up). This bird did something I'd never seen before; he slowly rolled over onto his back with his feet in the air. I used the same # of syllables per line as the original, and the same rhyme scheme until the last couplet; I didn't stick to the meter too closely, because that would've taken alot more... 2006-12-10 21:15:02 There's a little squirrel who started visiting my house last summer, and who's recently been semi-hibernating in my back yard; he's very likely the most spoiled creature on the planet. Every day, he gets filtered water in his own water dish, walnuts, peanuts, several sorts of veggies, the occasional apple or grapes, birdseed dropped on the ground by our equally spoiled avian visitors... and leaves from all of my surviving plants, lol. He makes off with enough food each day to feed a dozen squirrels, but he's not fat; he's dug up the area around our patio to create storage for all of it. Most people would be displeased with their landscaping becoming tunnels and mounds and general mess due to a rodent, but we're so besotted with this little guy that OUR reaction to seeing him hard at work at his excavating is to exclaim, dewey-eyed with adoration, "Look, he's digging-isn't he DARLING?!!" In awe of a hawk
2006-12-09 21:14:01 The most majestic species of wildlife sharing my suburban neighborhood is the hawk; they can often seen gazing contemptuously down on non-flying species from atop lamp posts and rooftops. Some time ago one of them made an unfortunate discovery... that my patio is bursting with over-fed birds. This shouldn't have actually been a problem, as hawks hunt by flying over their prey, folding their wings and dropping, then snatching the victims up at the end of the drop; birds under a patio cover are thus outside of their biological programming... but that hasn't stopped him from trying.I remember the 1st time I saw the huge male hawk fly through the patio area; his 6-7 foot wingspan caused a WHUMP and rattling of windows like a sonic boom. 2006-12-09 21:14:01 This evening, I noticed a bird sitting out on the patio; not eating, or hopping around, just SITTING, and because that sort of odd behavior can mean that the bird is injured, I kept a concerned eye on it until, just before it got dark, it vanished, and I was relieved...... until an hour later, when my husband went out there to re-stuff the copper wool into the holes the rats were using around the shed. He jumped backwards into a nearby bush with a yelp and a curse, and in response to my alarmed questions told me that when he'd tried to shove the wool into the mouth of a tunnel under the shed, a rat had shoved it right back out, and had looked out brazenly at him. A couple of minutes passed, and then he made an even more amazing announcement; it wasn't a rat, it was a BIRD.We'll gloss over how my husband couldn't tell a bird from a rat, and move onto how I went bolting out, expecting to see the bird I'd been watching earlier; instead, I saw a bird of the same species, but cl... More articles from this author:2006-12-09 21:14:01 Long-term readers might be puzzled as to why it's been so long since I said anything about my mother (who has stage 3 breast cancer); the main reason is that we had no contact for almost 2 months, which is typical for us and hasn't changed since she was diagnosed. I'd last spoken to her the day before she went to the doctor to get her radiation treatments set up and went back to work (after being off for 6 weeks due to the surgery in which they removed the tumor), and she repeatedly said that she'd call me the next day to give me the news; never one to consider keeping her word to family members to be necessary, and not needing rides for the radiation as she had for the chemo, she blew me off instead... and if I hadn't had to talk to her about a family matter, we STILL wouldn't have spoken. (Why didn't I call her during the preceding months? Because I don't reward people for spitting in my face by running after them-I'm funny that way.)Anyways: She's been having rad...
