Splinters of Silver

Splinters of Silver
I pray through this blog, not my words but, through the reading of the scriptures, through the presentation of thoughts and of comments, splinters of silver may prick and stay with us throughout our lives as we grow as Christians.

Do You Love Me? What About Them?
2008-01-29 17:09:00
I am going to just come out and say it: “I Love You!”Am I the only one that finds that which we are commanded to do in Scripture to be sometimes awkward and/or unnatural? I didn’t personally come from a “huggy” family that often told each other “I love you.” Even now, I find it somewhat uncomfortable to tell someone besides my wife or children that I love them. I believe I may show it to others by my actions, but to have the words flow from my mouth seems maybe even harder than saying, “I’m sorry.”Scripture teaches us there should be a love between husband and wife (Ephesians 5:25, Ephesians 5:33, Colossians 3:19, Titus 2:4), a love between parents and children (Proverbs 13:24, Ephesians 6:4, Titus 2:4), a love between friends (Proverbs 17:17, John 15:13), a love between Christians (John 13:34-35, Romans 12:10, 1 Peter 3:8-9), and even a love concerning our enemies (Matthew 5:43-45, Luke 6:35).Paul covers the act of love with his use of the word charity in 1 Cori...
Oh, the Bigotry of Bigotry
2008-01-24 17:25:00
Looking in the blog world of Atheism, again we have the use of the term bigotry. Dictionary.com defines bigotry as ?stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own.?Coming from the title ?Bigot ry Should Disqualify a Presidential Candidate? we have a discussion of:?Try to imagine what would happen if video got out in which one of the Presidential candidates used the dreaded "n-word." That campaign would be over in an instant. Why? Because that type of bigotry would not be tolerated and would be accepted by an overwhelming majority of the American people as grounds for disqualification. Unfortunately, other types of bigotry are not only accepted but are actually an important strategic component of many Republican campaigns. I long for the day when anti-gay and anti-atheist bigotry will disqualify a candidate as quickly as racism.?First off, I would like to note the simple fact of the comparison made by the writer: Race (whether African A...

Make a Joyful Noise unto God
2008-01-17 16:04:00
The Scripture is full of verses asking us to Make a Joyful Noise unto God, with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs of praise, not only to ourselves but also to others. There is probably not a Christian that would object to such teaching from Scripture, even from those which may not sing aloud themselves while sitting in the pews during worship services. The thing I would like to ponder is the idea of children verses adult singing specials in the church. In fact, I?ll just come right out and ask the question:Why do we accept and applaud a child that sings a special, though it may be off key, but seem to dare not let an adult sing that does not have the ?voice of angels??Is it simply because they ?look cute? and the adult may not? I know that sounds silly, but it appears this is indeed the reasoning behind it. I mean, what else could be justifiable reason to allow a child that does not have the prefect voice to sing, but not the adult?Should not the underlying factor be the heart of the...

Mark of the Beast Confusion
2008-01-11 17:59:00
Sent to me, by a friend of mine, was a news article from FOXNews.com about a young man who had apparently ?believed he bore the "mark of the beast" [and] used a circular saw to cut off one hand, [and] then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said.?There has been discussion concerning ?mental health? in these articles, but they all seem to leave a lot to be desired as to fully understand the context of what may have transpired for this man to do such. The article truly falls short when it comes to much of the story, but I noticed they made sure to include the Scripture references of Revelation and Matthew. They are as follows:Revelation 14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and br...

Book Two: Daegsteorra - Introduction
2008-01-10 17:50:00
Continuing in the Land of Erde, where book one, Ekleipsis, left off, will be book two, entitled Daegsteorra. I have actually been writing on this book since November 2007, while book one was going through editorial corrections. Now that Ekleipsis has been completed, I can give Daegsteorra my full attention. As with the title of book one, using the Greek word for ?eclipse?, Ekleipsis, I have decided to use the Old English word for ?the day star?, Daegsteorra, for the title of book two. With Ekleipsis newly out, I would hate to give too much insight into book two, Daegsteorra, at this point, fearing I may spoil the excitement and story of book one.As book one, Ekleipsis, begins with:Ekleipsis (Greek, eclipse): Judarius claimed that darkness would one day overcome and destroy all light. The name of that day, he called thus.Book two, Daegsteorra, begins with:Daegsteorra (Old English, the day star): The Ekleipsis cometh but for a moment, then shall the daystar yet arise above the Darkness....

Trying to Silence a Moment of Silence
2008-01-08 18:10:00
According to the Dallas Morning News, ?An atheist couple whose children attend a Carrollton-Farmers Branch elementary school have filed a complaint in federal district court arguing that the state's mandated moment of silence in public schools is unconstitutional.?The claim is that one of their children was apparently asked to be silent for a ?time for prayer? during the normal morning ?moment of silence?.Apparently the father also claims he doesn?t believe ?there is any secular reason for a moment of silence? and that a moment of silence is just a way to allow prayer in school without calling it prayer. He asks the question, ?Is there any study showing a moment of silence helps education?? But I would also ask if he has done any research to show that a moment of silence hurts education.I fail to understand why this couple would like us all to believe that a moment of silence is synonymous with prayer. That is simply not the case. How often do we take moments of silence throughout ...

?God Doesn?t Want Me To Be Unhappy?
2008-01-02 17:54:00
I have heard this statement more than once, and largely in the context of a wife desiring to leave (divorce) her husband. Where exactly does such a thought arise? I find it not within the writings of Scripture, so who then is the author of such?First, I would like to take a look at the central word, which is interestingly ?Me?. Now, I may be going out on a limb here, but usually when a person centralizes their thoughts upon self they are considered to be self-centered. A synonym for self-centered is selfish, meaning ?devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others.?Now, I am not going to assume that everyone (or anyone) that claims this line of reasoning, when considering the idea of divorce, may not have a legitimate reason for separation from their spouse (though Biblical justification is very limited and seldom adhered to), but I do believe this says more about their spiritual condition than it do...

Resolutions ?08
2008-01-01 14:45:00
Here we go again, a new year and some new resolutions. Each year, come January 1st, quite a lot of people find themselves making promises to themselves which they hope to stay committed to for 365 days. I often wonder how many last past the first 30 days.As I consider resolutions, I can?t help but recall the hymn I Am Resolved, by Palmer Hartsough. The very first verse should be the desire of every professing Christian, and for the repentant heart which comes to Christ for salvation:I am resolved no longer to linger,Charmed by the world?s delight,Things that are higher, things that are nobler,These have allured my sight. And to those which know not the loving Savior, Jesus Christ, and to the backslidden Christian, such is the refrain of hope to which we pray their hearts will be moved: I will hasten to Him, hasten so glad and free;Jesus, greatest, highest, I will come to Thee.I will hasten, hasten to Him, hasten so glad and free;Jesus, Jesus, greatest, highest, I will come to Thee. Tri-fold Effects of Sin
2007-12-13 19:07:00
Whether we wish to call it short-comings, faults, mistakes, or accidents, the most direct name given to our daily ?transgression of the law? (being the law of God) is labeled appropriately by God as sin.Sin is so common is our daily lives, whether inwardly among ourselves or outwardly plastered all over in the actions and advertisements of others, we seem to grow somewhat accustomed to it and fail to understand its total disgust to the eyes of a Holy God. Until we come to the realization of just how bad sin is and how corrupt man is because of it, how can we truly ever understand and acknowledge just how marvelous and wonderful the gift of salvation really is?When we choose to sin as a professing Christian, I believe then cometh the Tri-fold Effects of Sin:[1] Fellowship Broken With SelfThis may appear to sound awkward at first, but consider that Paul tells us that we are to follow the spirit and not the flesh to sin anymore. We are told that in salvation our spirits have been quick...

Teenagers Choose Fornication Over Purity
2007-12-07 16:44:00
At first glance, the notion given by the article title Teenage Birth Rate Rises for First Time Since ?91 may appear to give credible voice to those which oppose abstinence-only classes, claiming this is proof as to their failure to work. It is obvious with the rate of teenagers giving birth being greater than zero that there are indeed those which are not practicing abstinence-only, but that in and of itself does not prove that the rise in teenage birth rates is due to the abstinence-only classes themselves nor that they are failing to work. In seeing the rise of teenagers giving birth, it must also mean (if blame is to be placed upon abstinence-only classes) the non abstinence-only classes are failing to persuade the teenagers also, for aren?t contraceptives 99% guaranteed against pregnancy? This is why I have to agree with researcher Robert Rector. ?Robert Rector, a senior research fellow with the Heritage Foundation, said that blaming abstinence-only programs was ?stupid.? Mr. Rec...

Is Your Highway In Scripture?
2007-12-06 21:40:00
Okay folks, I am a Christian, so when I see claims such as this, I don?t know whether to laugh my head off or be upset at the silliness of the conclusion.Apparently, they have now so-called (that?s what I said, I am going by their profession of such) Christians proclaiming that I-35, the interstate from Laredo, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota, was prophesied by Isaiah as a ?Highway of Holiness.?The claim: ?"Everything we do, we want to make sure scripture is backing us up," said Austin's PromiseLand Church Pastor Charlie Lujan. "I-35 being Isaiah 35, it just matched."?Isaiah 35: 8 does read, ?And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.?Interestingly, can we also find an I-7, I-11, I-19, I-33, I-36, I-40, I-49, and I-62 in Scripture ? Can we then also conclude that God will make all highways a ?Highway of Holiness?? Isaiah 49:11 r...
Is Santa Wearing Hunter?s Red?
2007-12-06 21:13:00
Couldn?t help but laugh at the article I was just sent.Apparently one guy in his spirit of Christmas has decided to put up wooden cutouts of Santa pointing a rifle at Rudolph. Not sure as to what the red-nosed reindeer has done, but apparently, ?The Caillouets have been putting up their tongue-in-cheek display for seven years, and in that time, it's caused quite a stir.?I guess even non-religious stuff like Santa Claus and Rudolph can cause debate at Christmas time! Who?s to say Santa doesn?t shoot reindeer in the off-season? Hahaha!Hmmm, here is a thought: Do atheist parents allow their children to believe in Santa?

F. William Engdahl Sees Seeds of Destruction
2007-12-05 17:16:00
A friend of mine sent me an article entitled "Doomsday Seed Vault" in the Arctic, by F. William Engdahl.?No project is more interesting at the moment than a curious project in one of the world?s most remote spots, Svalbard. Bill Gates is investing millions in a seed bank on the Barents Sea near the Arctic Ocean, some 1,100 kilometers from the North Pole. Svalbard is a barren piece of rock claimed by Norway and ceded in 1925 by international treaty (see map).On this God-forsaken island Bill Gates is investing tens of his millions along with the Rockefeller Foundation, Monsanto Corporation, Syngenta Foundation and the Government of Norway, among others, in what is called the ?doomsday seed bank.? Officially the project is named the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, part of the Svalbard island group.?The article is a little long, but sort of interesting.Enjoy!

If for any reason you do not make it to Heaven then we will refund your money with no questions asked. Whence Cometh Wisdom
2007-12-04 15:59:00
One of my favorite passages of Scripture, and seemingly often quoted by others is Proverbs 3:5, 6.5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. These two verses share with us some great truths, about trusting and acknowledging the things of the LORD over our own thoughts. Have you ever continued to the next two verses?7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Here the Scriptures tell us that we are not to be wise in our own eyes. In fact, it goes on to declare that if we fear the LORD and depart from evil, it will bring us health to our physical bodies. If we are honest, most of us believe we have it all figured out, and seldom wish to adhere to the wisdom of others (of those proven to be wise). This can be seen in our children, as they develop from kids into teenagers and into adulthood, but sel...

Atheism Goes To First Church
2007-11-28 18:01:00
I know most anyone in the South has seen a sign labeled with First Baptist Church , but have you ever noticed a sign for the First Church of Atheism ?Motto: ?With the First Church of Atheism you can become ordained quickly, easily, and at no cost.?Purpose: ?As a legally ordained minister, you will be able to perform weddings, funerals, commitment ceremonies, and other functions that are reserved for members of clergy.?I did find it most interesting the terminology used in their statement of unity, per se: ?The one thing binding every FCA minister is his or her belief in science, reason, and reality.?Christians have been ridiculed plenty of times by Atheist s claiming Atheism has no belief system, but according to the First Church of Atheism, they (at least this church) do have a one thing binding based on ?belief in science, reason, and reality.?Further evidence of a belief system (again, at least this church) is their statement, ?We believe that everyone should have the right to preac...
For the Bible Tells Me So Heresy
2007-11-28 17:07:00
Again it appears we have the heresy of persons trying to use Scripture to promote as acceptable, that which is clearly stated in Scripture as an unnatural, unseemly, reprobate sin in the sight of the Almighty Lord God of Heaven and Earth.Interestingly the film title of For the Bible Tells Me So has little to do with honesty on the part of the writers and promoters, for the Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is a sin. There is no doubt concerning this matter, for even Atheists (which deny there is a God or that Scripture should be used today) freely admit that the Scriptures and God are against homosexuality. To deny the teaching of Scripture against homosexuality is completely dishonest from anyone who would claim such. The questions presented by the film are thus:?Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate??The film?s proclaim is as follows:?Winner of the A...

Prodigal Prayers
2007-11-27 17:54:00
This past Sunday our pastor preached a sermon on the passage of the prodigal son, which he entitled The Prodigal Sons (notice the ?s?). The sermon referenced the actions of both sons: The son who took his inheritance and left, eventually returning, and the son which stayed with the father, as recorded in Luke 15, notably in verses 11-32.Today I wanted to give emphasis on the Prodigal Prayer s we most often pray as Christians, compared to the Righteous Prayers we should consider more worthy to be offered. The prodigal prayer goes as follows: ?Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me.?Now, what portion of goods did this son mean? Was it not the inheritance in which he would receive upon his father?s death? Therefore, his selfish desires pushed all wisdom aside, giving over to the ?I want my way now? attitude, caring not for the wishes of his father. How often do we, as Christians, selfishly pray and demand that God do that which we voice to Him in prayer? How often are our...

Just How Thankful Are You?
2007-11-21 17:23:00
Coming this Thursday, actually tomorrow, many will be celebrating the holiday we call Thanksgiving here in America. The meaning behind the title, Just How Thankful Are You, is meant to allow you, the reader, to ponder to yourself what you may be thankful of.I think too often we spend most of our year considering the things that we are not thankful for, meaning the things we dislike or wish we could change, etc. How often do we actually take a moment to just enjoy a fresh thought toward all of the many blessings in our lives to be thankful for? What if we could enjoy the entire day, the whole twenty-four hours, of tomorrow expressing our thoughts and appreciation for whatever we are thankful for? How about we refuse to allow anything besides that which we are indeed thankful for to creep in and take over our day of Thanksgiving? Some may say, ?that is impossible,? but I assume we could at least try. I completely realize there may be those that are suffering from physical, emotional, an...

Have Australian Santa?s been told to say ?No? to ?ho ho ho?
2007-11-15 19:34:00
There is apparently a claim that Santa s, at least in Australia, will not longer be able to say ?ho ho ho.? Some have said that they have been told to replace the traditional greeting with ?ha ha ha.?Why, you ask? Seemingly, some may feel that the term ?ho ho ho? could be offensive to women. The claim is that not only can ?ho ho ho? offend women it could also possibly scare children.Honestly, I have seen more children scared of Santa?s beard than his greeting of ?ho ho ho.? And I have yet to hear of a mother not bringing their child to see Santa at the shopping centers because of his greeting. Maybe the children are simply scared because it is a big fat man, with a beard, wearing a suit, which they do not know.My son loves Spiderman and he enjoyed getting his autograph while we were visiting Universal Studios, but when we saw Spiderman in the mall a few weeks later my son was scared to go up to talk to him.The company, Westaff, claims, ?"We ask our Santas to try techniques such as lo...

Christian Children's Book: Salvation, Baptism, & Eternal Security
2007-11-14 21:59:00
The initial purpose behind writing this book is to focus on the current questions my children have concerning salvation, baptism, and eternal security. One of the greatest ministries we have as Christian parents is to teach our children about the things of God. Can there be any teaching more important than the Gospel itself, of how the love of God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Willing to suffer the death of the cross, Jesus Christ gave Himself ransom for all those which put their faith in Him. Through His death, burial, and resurrection, we as sinners can find forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Jesus Christ. Our children deserve to know of this great love. As Christian parents we owe it to our children to tell them of the things of God, and as saved sinners we owe it to God to be obedient to His Word.Although the pages of this book may be read by the children alone, I would suggest that the parent(s) consider spending a moment with their children with it. This book i...

Snake Bit Hypocrisy
2007-11-13 19:50:00
During my glance over an atheist blog I sometimes visit, the writer references another blog, referencing a Kentucky news article. In reading the article, I can?t help but see why the non-Christian world would enjoy such a tale. The article?s title is ?Family sues hospital over snakebite death,? but that doesn?t really convey what actually transpired to cause the snakebite. Or, should I say what was taking place at the time of the snakebite? Apparently, a 48 year old London, Kentucky woman was trying to handle a yellow timber rattler during a service at East London Holiness Church. Although, it seems, sometimes people that are bitten by snakes during religious services will refuse medical attention, when Linda Long was bitten on the right cheek, she was rushed to Marymount Medical Center in London. There is apparently a lawsuit pending concerning the medical attention given (or not given) and supposed comments toward the woman and her family regarding the snakebite incident.
