An Imperfect God.
2007-02-24 14:45:02
This article was inspired by Simon and the great discussion we had in the last post. Around the world, people get into discussions about God . Whether God exists, why God does what God does and how should we live according to God - all come up on a daily basis in discussions about life, society, relationships, science and government. One of the biggest challenges that fuels much of the debate is that people tend to be highly inflexible in their beliefs. Much of this inflexibility stems from most people’s belief about God. God is omnipotent, omniscient and in all aspects perfect. The problem with the Perfect God is that it doesn’t leave any room for discussion. God can never be wrong or not know something or make a mistake, because he is perfect. Thus, there can be nothing more needed to understand life in the world because the bible provides it all(or the Qur’an) and it is the literal word of God, who is perfect. The perfect God concept creates a great Cartesian Cir...
Can Religion, Science & The Modern World Coexist?
2007-02-14 14:43:04
At Modern Humanist we are obviously on the side of modernity.  Modernity is the very same phenomenon that fundamentalism fights against.  Science and Modernity is the battleground for this issue and has become increasingly heated and in many cases violent in recent years. One the surface one could argue that religion is tearing our world apart.  In some cases this is true.  Fundamentalism has become increasingly popular, well-funded and active.  When you combine inflexible belief, money, politics and fanaticism…well that’s just not a recipe for a yummy batch of cookies. We look around the globe and see skirmishes raging all around the globe from Iraq to India; from France to the United States; from Canada to Jakarta. But can Religion square itself with the modern world and continue to be a part of it’s future? I think it can, but it’s going to take some serious commitment and a great deal of bad blood to accomplish.  As I have stated several times on this sit...

Stonehenge, Still A Humanist Wonder.
2007-02-08 02:39:02
Stonehenge. The mere mention of the name invokes images of magic. Long thought to be some sort of ancient observatory, it has been associated with with Celts, Gauls and even Egyptians. In more legendary terms, Stonehenge has been also associated with druids, Merlin and even extraterrestrial aliens. Considered one of the world’s most mystical places, Stonehenge has remained shrouded in mystery and wonder. A recent project headed up by 100 archaeologist from around Great Britain has discovered some interesting new evidence which may suggest something entirely different for the Neolithic monument. The scientists discovered a sister site just a couple miles away from Stonehenge called Durrington Walls. This site is once believed to have been similar to Stonehenge in construction but constructed out of timber and housing. Durrington Walls housed the people and Stonehenge was the burial site. An avenue connected the two sites and also followed along the river. Apparently the t...

Faith-Based Policy Is Not Good For Society.
2007-02-01 14:34:02
Please Vote for this post on The Philosophy Blog War. When some discussions turn to Islamic Fundamentalism, one of the biggest concerns is Islamic Law. The law, as seen from a western perspective, seems cruel, unbending and often misogynistic. The biggest concern is that it has a tendency to issue harsh penalties with little or no recourse or discussion. Islam, attempts to be a complete faith. This means that they endeavor to view all aspects of life through the lens of Islam and believe that religious proscriptions are inseparable from daily live and society. In other words being a good Muslim means living your life in that way whether it be at church, work, school or home. It also affects government and courts as well as private relationships. The is no separation of church and ANYTHING. Interestingly, while this is a big fear amongst Westerners, faith-based initiatives do much the same thing on a smaller scale. When a faith-based organization is given funds and allowed to decide ...

The Evolution Of Religion.
2007-01-25 14:29:01
In Richard Dawkins The God Delusion, he makes the argument that religion must have a some kind of evolutionary benefit otherwise it would not continue to propagate with each generation. As anyone who has examined most major religious belief systems, they tend to have contradictions, logical misfires and plain old unprovable nonsense in their cores. I don’t say this to malign then, only to illustrate that what Dawkins says must have some validity. Certainly if anyone in the modern world proposed a new religion who’s main tenets we EXACTLY the same as the big three, but just called them something different they would be locked up or at best immediately written off as insane or delusional. However, these beliefs persist because people continue to believe them and have done so for so long that they are part of our collective psyche. Recent research has even shown that people in the throes of these beliefs can’t even recognize their flaws (not won’t, but litera...

A Humanist Night Out At Cirque Du Soleil.
2007-01-24 02:27:01
Cirque Du Soleil is one of the most wonderful troupes on the planet.  Their shows are sensory festivals that are a humanists dream.  They extol dreams and imagination combined with incredible artistry, physical amazement and enchanting music. I have seen 7 different Cirque Du Soleil shows and have never seen a bad one.  Some are better than others of course, but the Montreal based troupe never dissappoints. Cirque is in town with their new show Corteo.  A dreamlike piece that takes place at the main character’s funeral.  A bit odd, but the avant-garde Cirque always is. This was probably the best show I’ve seen so far.  Maybe it was just my personal taste, but the show and the costumes were incredible and the music was absolutely perfect.  I think the biggest element that made this show so great was the story itself.  Each Cirque Du Soleil show has a framing story that the show is built around.  It’s always creative and the costumes are usually fabulous, but for som...

What Is The Purpose Of Philosophy?
2007-01-24 02:27:01
Philosophy by definition is the “love of wisdom.” At varying points in time in the past, philosophers consorted with kings and were among the ones considered to be the brightest minds of the time. They were often revered and frequently sought out as advisors, teachers and statesmen. With a world that has become ever more specialized, as well as one highly focused on science and commerce, the philosopher has become a very different person. Whereas philosophy at one time may have been considered one of the highest callings, it is now the purview (for the most part) of two very different kinds of people; eggheads and lawyers. Philosophy as an academic discipline is relegated as either a preparatory program for future solicitors or a gilded ivory cage for heady scholars who think too much about impractical subjects to functionally participate in polite society. You can see Philosophy struggling for relevance everywhere you look. Nothing screams potential extinction like tryi...

The Modern Humanist Life Path Part 2: Experience.
2007-01-12 14:22:02
Not that we have talked about learning, we move on to the second element in the Modern Human ist Life Path; experience.  Experience can mean a lot of different things and all of those meanings may apply, but the one we are going to focus on here is the verb experience. This is the doing version of the word.  The action of experience.  This is the encouragement to go out and experience life, not as a spectator, but as a participant. This may seem odd, but it isn’t.  There is a very different feel of simply “being” and “experiencing”  one is passive, the other is active.  If your only aim is to just “be” then you can literally stop where you are, sit down and never get up again.  Regardless of what happens, you will simply be. When we seek to experience, we have to get involved, we have to go out and see, touch, taste, feel and hear the world and everything in it.  Just like you can read books and watch movies and television and hear stories ab...

No Resolutions.
2007-01-03 14:18:02
Welcome to the new year!  Depending on the calendar you follow, the new year happened yesterday.  The hangovers have subsided, the leftovers eaten and for most people it’s back to work.  Back to work after a quick stop to the book store to pick up the latest diet book, latest exercise DVD, the latest self-help book and the latest spiritual book.  Following the universal new year’s resolutions to lose weight, get laid, get rich and find god. We all know how this story will end, either by Valentine’s day, or by Thursday, the books and DVD’s will be put away and everyone will be in the throngs of whatever was going wrong in their life last year. Many have offered opinions about this phenomena - people are lazy, life is too hard, we have no time, we have a fear of failure, fear of success, too high expectations or any host of a thousand excuses for not following through. Self help gurus will tell you that it is a question of motivation or leverage or scheduling, ...

Warriors.
2006-12-28 02:14:01
When I ask you to think of the modern day warrior, what comes to mind? For many it is probably a soldier or sports hero. Since the dawn of organized civilization, the warrior has had a role in society. It may have been as a hunter, protector or peacekeeper. The warrior provided a necessary service to society and was also a source of praise and admiration as well as fear. A warrior is a person who cultivates their mind, body and spirit as well as lives by a code. A warrior can be male or female, young or old.  It is about personal strength and a path of life. Being a warrior is a way of life that thrives on balance.  The Samurai, while being deadly warriors were also artists and writers of haiku.  Arab warriors, while also fierce combatants were also scientists and writers of poetry.  The great warrior traditions have always comprised a blend of physical fitness, scholarly pursuit and mindful philosophy. Part of what made the warrior code so strong and visible was the concept of hono...

Happy Chrismakwanzukkah.
2006-12-21 14:10:02
It’s holiday season and the battles have begun. Chris tians have Christmas, Jews have Hanukkah, and African Americans have Kwanzaa. Wiccans and neo pagans have Solstice and some other faiths have varrying holidays that sometimes fall around the same time. And amidst all this is Festivus courtesy of George Costanza’s dad. That’s an awful lot of holidays all jammed into one time period. With everyone fighting for their moment in the spotlight, the only winners seem to be the greeting card companies and retail stores. While all the little holidays try to carve out their piece of the pie, the big guy (Xmas) is even going on the offensive. Not satisfied with being the Coca Cola of winter Holidays, Christmas is trying to squeeze out the competition by eliminating the inclusive and neutral “Happy Holidays” in favor of the Christianocentric “Merry Christmas”. This is as they claim the way it should be and their effort to take Christmas back fo...
Live From Disney World Part 1.
2006-12-15 02:06:02
The trip down to Disney was smooth and easy - no problems at all.  The unfortunate thing about driving in the Interstate highway era is that there is really nothing to see along the way.  Not quite as desolate as driving to Montreal through the Adirondacks and not quite as monotonous and boring as driving north through Virginia, but fairly uninspiring just the same. As we arrived and checked into the hotel, everything continued to go smoothly.  Tuesday morning we woke up early because we had arranged to be part of a Segway Personal Transport tour around the Epcot Center World Showcase (more on that in a minute). The day started off well as the hotel was serving made to order Greek omelets, which surprised the hell out of me because Disney World , while fun, is not exactly known for healthy food - especially given their partnership with McDonalds. Nonetheless, I savored every bit of the fresh vegetables and olives in my omelet and set off for a day of Segway fun. Since we had to get i...

Live From Disney World Part 2.
2006-12-15 02:06:02
I think the true benefits of this trip will come next week since I have come up with at least 4 new topics to explore on this trip alone. Meanwhile back in the park… Walt Disney wanted to present educational material in a fun way.  This was one of his primary goals.  In some ways he was successful, in other ways really not.  But that’s not his fault since he’s been dead since 1966. So now some quick highlights and some observations. Disney/MGM Studios Park is terrible.  UNLESS you like roller coasters and being dropped 60 stories to test the theory of whether your vomit falls as fast as your body in a vaccuum. You would think that a park based on the movies would be fun and exciting, and you’d be wrong.  The food isn’t even good here.  The worst is the new secrets of Narnia attraction.  It is supposed to be a behind the scenes look at the making of the Narnia movie.  Sounds great!  It starts great as you are led onto a soundstage mock up of the snow sce...

Legacy.
2006-12-15 02:06:02
Earlier we talked about the concept of the soul from the Modern Humanist perspective.  If we think of the soul as that which lives on after us in the hearts and minds of others, then what is our legacy and how does it manifest? Walt Disney had a dream.  He dreamt of entertaining and educating people.  Each person is filled with a driving purpose that they have created for themselves and the fulfillment of that purpose is their legacy.  For Walt it was to create educating and entertaining fun.  It began as a series of cartoons and blossomed into movies, theme parks and even esoteric concepts like the Disney ideal.  Walt did not live to see his last inspiration, but thanks to his dream and his legacy, his ideas were not only completed, but they grew and inspired others to even greater achievement to the point where his dreams and ideals now span the globe and entertain and educate millions. While most of us will not ultimately achieve this level of success, it does inspire us to go fo...

Miracles: Where Are They Now?
2006-12-15 02:06:02
Where have all the miracles gone?  One upon a time you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone who was personally involved with a miracle.  Whether it be sticks to snakes, parting seas, healing lepers, curing blindness, raising the dead, walking on water, loaves to fishes, water to wine, virgin births or even driving the snakes out of Ireland.  Miracle s used to happen almost every day, so where are they now? Apparently miracles were so commonplace at one time that Saints in the Catholic Church had to perform at least TWO before they could be canonized. So what’s the deal?  There are plenty of miracles still going on today, but unfortunately they are only reserved for sporting events and gambling.  There have been other miracles reported outside of sports and gambling, but none of them hold up to scrutiny. So why do we believe in miracles if no one has actually seen one in over 2000 years?  Surely if a policeman can’t even beat the crap out of a suspect in...

The Philosophy Of Fun.
2006-12-04 14:04:01
As we follow the four Modern Humanist principles; Learn, Experience, Grow & Teach, there is an important component that is often overlooked - FUN. Fun is a key element in everything we do and describes the enjoyment we receive from various activities. As we begin this week’s special report from Walt Disney World, I thought it would be good to discuss the Phil osophy of Fun. There are many things we have to do in life, some of which are not enjoyable. Most often these are activities that we do not choose for ourselves. When we DO choose, in addition to deriving some life benefit from the activity, our primary goal should be fun. Having fun is not just about joy, it is actually a key component to our experiences. Looking at the four principles, each is enhanced by fun. Studies have shown that educationally we learn and retain more when learning is fun and based on our interests. By having fun in a particularly activity, we are also more likely to retain the experience...

Does Political Correctness Make Us Liars?
2006-12-01 03:37:07
Political Correctness is not correct.  It is not mannerly, nor is it polite.  Political Correctness is something we do (fake) so that we won’t get in trouble for saying something that someone has decided is offensive or inappropriate.  Like any other measure of society, it was born out of a legitimate concern that people were being degraded, oppressed, marginalized or in other ways offended by certain kinds of speech and behavior. Where it took a far turn is when it became the way to communicate in a sanitized and censored way.  Political Correctness also encompasses what we call damage control for when someone says or does something inappropriate.  This includes meeting with the right people, apologizing to the right people and publicly displaying the correct amount of remorse so that people will forget that you said or did whatever got you in trouble in the first place. By now we have all heard or seen Michael Richards’ racist tirade.  It’s not too long ago that ...

Friday Humanist Musing.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
There are many activities that many people think they can perform, but most actually can’t because they are actually activities that require skill and talent. There can be many examples of this, but the two that spring to mind are singing and writing.  Most people think they can sing (to a degree) but most really can’t.  Nothing against them, but in reality, singing is a developed skill requiring much practice to be decent, just like any instrument.  No one would think they could sit down at a piano and just play without training, so why would singing be any different? Writing is the other victim in this scheme.  Almost everyone thinks they can write, and write well, but once again most can’t.  These folks would never believe they could sit down and just draw a great masterpiece, but writing is something everyone can do easily.  But in truth, writing is an art form that takes as much skill as any other. I use these as examples, because there is one other place wher...

Humanist Book Review: The Intellectual Devotional.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
You may have seen this book in your local store or heard about it on the radio or perhaps not. If you have heard of it and don’t have it or you haven’t heard of it - I encourage you to go check it out and pick it up (you can follow a link and grab it below). This book is a perfect symbol of Modern Human ism. It emphasizes learning and knowledge as well as secular philosophy and also is a complete celebration of humanity. The book contains 365 entries for each day of the year (not dated so you can start whenever you like) and gives one-page daily lessons on topics drawn from the seven fields of knowledge; History, Literature, Visual Arts, Science, Music, Philosophy and Religion. Each lesson covers a topic like Hemingway, The Torah, The Concept of Time, Socrates, Noah, The Placebo Effect or Ancient Greece. This primer is not only filled with great information, but also thought provoking ideas and concepts that can help fuel discussions afterward. For the well read, it ...

Can You Change Someone?s Mind?
2006-12-01 03:37:07
We see it time and time again. Brilliant(and not so brilliant) efforts to convince people to change positions on anything from politics to religion. As I turn the last page on Sam Harris’ Letter to a Christian Nation and take a look at the other recent publications like Richard Dawkins’ God Delusion, it gets me to thinking if there is a purpose behind such things. Hariss’ book was excellent and had many great points and some interesting ideas that I hadn’t thought of before, but then I’m on his side. Richard Dawkins, a brilliant thinker, has also produced an excellent piece of work. So have many others. Many of the reviews of these books echo my sentiments; great book, but will only be read by supporters. Howard Gardner, eminent psychologist and Harvard Professor, is a long time favorite of mine, especially for his work on the multiple intelligences theory. He has a new book as well; Chan g ing Mind s. In it he attempts to discuss a methodology for c...

A Billion Trees To Save The World.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
As Modern Humanists, one of our mandates is not only to celebrate and improve humanity and human society, but also to improve to world for humanity as well. That can take many forms, but one key element is living in harmony with the environment. Anything we can do to offset our own impact on the environment is worthwhile, especially if we can improve it. A new program spearheaded by Nobel Prize winner Wingari Maatai has now become a global campaign to plant 1 billion trees throughout 2007. Now federated under the United Nations Environment Programme, the Billion Tree Program calls on everyone to take part from individuals to corporations. Trees not only increase the enjoyment of everyone, but also provide needed environmental benefits. As global warming continues to progress, trees can not only help by absorbing harmful greenhouse gasses, but also help stabilize soil and water resources. As the United States is the biggest producer of greenhouse gasses, it is incumbent upon all of...

An Ancient Greek Machine And The Future Of Humanity.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
More proof that the Dark Ages truly plunged us into darkness.  Scientists have completed work on a an ancient Greek machine that has taken over 100 years to re-construct and decipher.  The net result is a testament to the ingenuity of humanity and the brilliance of ancient humans. Like the incredible scientific and mathematical achievements of the Mayans, this machine, called the  Antikythera Mechanism is proving to be one of the most incredible finds in modern archaeological history.  The Mechanism was unearthed in 1900 by divers exploring an ancient ship wreck. The item appears to have been crafted in 150 - 100 BC and is a a clock-like machine consisting of more than 30 precise, hand-cut bronze gears.  The device is an astronomical calculator that scientists are claiming is so precise that it even accounts for the irregular motion of the moon caused by it’s elliptical orbit. Previous reconstructions suggested the Antikythera Mechanism was about the size of a shoebox, with di...

Giving Thanks.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
While I am reminded of my favorite question, “What do the French do for Thanks giving?”, today is Thanksgiving Day for Americans. Thanksgiving is a lot of things to a lot of people. For some it’s a day off, others a chance to stuff their face, a day for football, a day with family and friends or a day of remembrance. Very few know the harsh realities that accompanied the first so-called Thanksgiving, and there is no reason to dig that up here. It is safe to say that Thanksgiving is not a holiday worth remembering for anything positive and for most not a day of anything in particular. But, since we all have the day off, it might be nice to explore the intended reason for the day and how we might look at the concept of thanks and gratitude in our lives, not for one day, but everyday. Being thankful is not about politeness and saying “thank you.” It’s not about manners, but about a genuine feeling of gratitude. Gratitude is the appreciation for people...

The Steeldrum.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
Inspired by Blage’s new drawings at Top Drawer Designs, I thought it would be nice to explore the Steel drum. Like the Sitar in India or the Chinese Zither, nothing evokes the spirit and feeling of the Carribbean like the steeldrum.  It’s metallic melodic sound has inspired dancing and brought back fond memories for millions. As far as instruments go, it is one of the newest.  At the same time it is also one of the most interesting. The Steeldrum has it’s beginnings in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s in Trinidad and Tobago.  The frist steeldrums may have been fashined out of a number of different materials, but the ancestor of the modern drum was created using the tops of 50 gallon oil drums left around the islands by the US Navy. Each can lid was hammered down and then heated over fire until it became malleable.  The notes were then hammered and tuned until the full pan was ready. Once that was completed, the steel drum was ready for playing. The drum ...

A New Psychology?
2006-12-01 03:37:07
About 10 years ago, there was a movement called Philosophical Counseling.  It was led by Lou Marinoff, who published a book called; Plato Not Prozac.  Philosophical Counseling basically uses philosophy and reason to help people work through their issues instead of traditional psychology or psychiatry. Is this the philosopher’s purview?  Should philosophers be mixing it up where psychologists have ruled or should they mind their own business and go back to contemplating dreamy thoughts of ideas that live in esoterica? It’s interesting to consider.  Since the “ologies” came from the big “osophy,” is Philosophy just the big brother coming back in and trying to take over? We know a great deal about the physiology of the brain now.  Some would say we barely know anything, but even still we know about neural pathways, glial cells, opiate receptors and many of the other processes that help explain the brain.  We have a much better idea of how we learn an...

The New Atheism/Anti-Religion Movement.
2006-12-01 03:37:07
Atheists are getting agitated. They are starting to speak out. They are starting to rail against the tyranny of the religious and their persecution by the people and government that ranks them in acceptance below the homosexuals that they openly hate. This month, there has even been a lot of press. With Sam Harris’ Letter To A Christian Nation and Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion leading the charge, new articles are penning the voice of angry atheists. This week’s TIME features a debate between Dawkins and Christian geneticist Francis Collins and WIRED features an article about the New Atheism in which Dawkins calls for open combat between Atheists and Religion . Even Elton John has called for an end to Religion that he believes openly persecutes Gays and has sown the seeds of strife and conflict throughout the world. Non-belief is getting more press; this is good. The way they are getting it; not so good. As I talked about in this post, Atheism is simply a pos...

Modern Humanist Inspiration.
2006-09-16 03:00:01
As I traveled around the blogosphere, I read some stories about banned books and banned art. I also thought about how polarized and angry so many people seem to be as they fervently defend their ideals and attack those who disagree. As I breathed in all this anger, I thought what a joy it was to be a Modern Human ist and have all this beauty and wonder and art to choose from in all corners of the world. Inspiration is the lifeblood of humanity. It feeds us, entertains us, educates us and drives us. Inspiration helps us become better friends, better citizens and better humans. Inspiration is that feeling of being transported. Whether it is a story that takes us to another world, a painting that shows us another place or a piece of music that takes us on an emotional journey. Each small journey brings us not only to place outside day to day existence, but also introduces us to what could be. Inspiration whisks us to that place of infinite possibility where every idea is amazing and ev...

Why Choose Modern Humanism?
2006-09-14 14:54:02
Modern Human ism is not simply an alternative to mainstream religious belief. Modern Humanism should be seen as an evolved and educated decision made by those who see the world as constantly growing and changing. As our society and culture evolve, so should our beliefs. Just as we no longer bleed people to treat their ills, we should no longer cling to beliefs that are neither designed for or appropriate for the modern world. Laws and rules and perspectives designed for Middle Eastern shepherds and nomadic tribes cannot hope to be applied to the modern world and modern life without adjustment. While those belief systems carry core philosophies and parables which can inspire and influence us as people, the specific tenets and proscriptions designed for the people they were written about and for are not likewise written for us. We all need purpose and direction. We need a reason to get up every morning and a passion to experience life. Philosophy and belief help us put life into a dige...

Atheism and Modern Humanism.
2006-09-13 14:51:02
Atheism is a funny thing.  The mere mention of it can bring up a whole host of beliefs(especially interesting due to the fact that the very nature of Atheism is the rejection of a belief).  It is a term that is not only reviled but massively misunderstood by many, especially in the United States, which lists those of Atheistic persuasion at less than 2% of the population(removing Agnostics and the spiritual but not religious). Despite being such a small minority, Atheists command the honor of being the MOST hated and distrusted member of American society. “…according to a national survey by University of Minnesota scholars this year. Researchers found that Americans rank Atheists below gay and lesbian people, recent immigrants, Muslims and other minorities in “sharing their vision of American society.” That’s pretty interesting considering the massive furor over gay marriage and the so-called homosexual agenda, the huge national upheaval over immigratio...
