We Love St. Christopher!
2007-07-25 16:20:00
Today is also the feast of Saint Christopher, the giant ferryman who once bore Christ across a swollen river (in fact, "Christopher" means "Christ bearer"). Although the pointy-headed types tried to unsaint him as legendary and he is off the official calendar, St. Christopher retains the allegiance of rank-and-file Catholics the world over as patron of travellers. Getting Back Up To Speed On the Classical Mode fo the Latin Rite

Saint James
2007-07-25 14:46:00
Allow me first to advert your attention to what I wrote last year on the feast of St. James the Moor-Killer. The images have disappeared from that post because I restructured my Photobucket account into sub-files this past winter. The Catholic Encyclopedia The Golden Legend This is one traditional depiction of St. James (courtesy of The Lion and the Cardinal) His most common

Archdiocese of Boston Official Response To Summorum Pontificum
2007-07-25 14:26:00
Took them long enough. But I supposed an amazingly tendentious and thoroughly wrong-headed response like this takes some time to work up. News/Events July 18, 2007 - Statement Following the Recent Release Of the Motu Proprio The recent statement of the Holy Father amends the previous process, established by Pope John Paul II, whereby a priest had needed permission from the local bishop to

Coming Soon: A Culling
2007-07-24 16:02:00
As I said yesterday, it is vacation time, and from now through Labor Day weekend, you can expect 10-20% of everybody to be on vacation at any one time. So blogging around St. blog's generally is a little lighter than usual now. As I was surfing through my links, I found a distressing number of blogs that just plain are not there any longer. Pontifications (!). Who knew? And there are a lot

The Wound In Our Lord's Side: Right Or Left?
2007-07-23 16:57:00
I have been doing some research on which side Our Lord's wound was on. Most crucifixes and paintings depict the wound on His right side. But I grew up with a crucifix that had the wound on the left side. The Gospel of Saint John does not specify which side. Each side has its advocates. Both are well-represented in art. And some show no wound at all, since they depict Our Lord either just

Eucharistic Prayer Number One, Please
2007-07-23 15:43:00
You might recall that I am in my early 40s, and grew up, for all intents and purposes, with the Mass according to the Missal of Paul VI. But I remember back to my days in grade school and high school, with fairly conservative priests in my fairly conservative parish. We used to hear the First Eucharist ic Pray er on occasion back then. But, seriously, I don't think I have heard it in 30 years.

God Bless Him
2007-07-23 15:37:00
Late last summer, the Red Sox were hit with a series of injuries and illnesses that really shook the team, and precipitated its dramatic plummet from first place. One of the most awful episodes was rookie pitcher Jon Lester being diagnosed with lymphoma. He began aggressive treatment, and was pronounced cancer-free in December. Tonight, he returns to the major leagues, called up to fill the

"Why Do You Write? There Is No News."
2007-07-23 15:28:00
The Holy Father has been on on his summer vacation this past week, and returns next week to a light summer schedule at Castello Gondolpho. So I found this very charming and amusing. I see that a lot of blogs are doing likewise, and have shifted down to vacation mode. Hallowed Ground is on hiatus. Others are, as well. For those on vacation now or soon, enjoy. Leisure time is necessary

Our Blessed Lady's Saturday
2007-07-21 17:39:00
Saturday has long been associated with Our Blessed Lady. The Church devotes every day of the week to some blessed object. Saturday is Mary's day. If you say the Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is likely on Saturday (though you can say it whenever you want). In the traditional calendar, some Saturdays are officially designated Our Lady's Saturday (the next one I see is August 11th). I

Friday At the Foot Of the Cross
2007-07-20 17:22:00
Act of Contrition to the Sacred Heart Most Sacred and Adorable Heart of Jesus! humbly and with contrite heart I prostrate myself before Thee. bitterly bewailing that I was remiss in Thy love and have offended Thee by my ingratitude and unfaithfulness, thereby becoming unworthy of the manifestations of Thy love. Filled with confusion and fear, I can but say, "I have sinned against Thee, I have

Semana Santa, Part 2
2007-04-03 15:21:00
Yesterday, we took a quick look (and believe me, even though there were a lot of photos posted, that only scratches the surface of what is out there for the floats for the various Holy Week Penitents' processions in Spain) at the Pasos or floats used in Holy Week processions in southern Spain. We saw that many of the carvings could easily be in a museum or a church. I know there were several

Two Second Anniversaries
2007-04-02 16:23:00
Remember that two individual souls went before God for their particular judgment two years ago this week. Terri Schindler Schiavo was judically murdered on March 31st, 2005 by her estranged husband over the vehement protests of her family, and with the shameful complicity of the ordinary of that diocese. Pope John Paul II died a holy death two years ago today after a long illness, mourned by

Semana Santa, Part 1
2007-04-02 15:01:00
Here is my post from last year on Spanish Holy Week processions. Since I discovered this pious Catholic sub-culture, I have developed a strong interest in it, and its Holy Week manifestations. Living here in the moderate Aristolean City, oh so relentlessly secular and this worldly, I wish I could see processions like this on the streets of Boston (and I have written about the saints' festivals

My Final Preparation For Easter and Yours
2007-04-01 21:39:00
Because of Lent's convenient division into 7 parts (including the half-week starting on Ash Wednesday), I have been reading weekly installments of St. John Fisher's An Exposition of the Seven Penitential Psalms, and Father Rengers' The Seven Last Words Of Christ On the Cross. I finished Father Rengers this morning, and plan to read St. John Fisher's treatment fo the 7th Penitential Psalm early

Dom Bettinelli takes us on a tour I have taken many and many a time. I just adore driving down 1A through North Bevery, Hamilton, Wenham, and Ipswich. The Crane Estate. The historic district of Ipswich. Patton Park with its Sherman tank. Myopia Polo field. Wenham Country Club and the Lakeview golf course. Wenham Lake. And the orchard he set out to find, once called Goodale Orchards, now

The latest posts on topic over at Rorate Caeli (which, in case you haven't noticed, is THE "Go-To" source for this important matter) bring us, I think, pas tthe point of, "Hope springs eternal in the human breast. Man never is, but always 'to be' blessed." Now we actually have confirmation by someone outside the traditionalist community (and Cardinal Castrillon de Hoyos, as head of Ecclesia Dei,

This Hasn't Happened In A While
