Closing A Chapter
2008-04-09 14:02:00 “Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something.” -- The last words of Pancho Villa (1877 - 1923) 1595 days ago, I started this blog as a vehicle of personal expression. I was starting to get my eyesight back after six months of prolonged blindness. I was questioning my vocation as a PhD student in musicology, and wondering where I fit in the world with my new disability. After much More About: Chapter
A Kaleidoscope
2008-04-08 22:44:00 Just because I haven't done a kaleidoscope post in a while... ***** I went to my follow-up appointment at the Fracture Clinic this morning and I got a good report from the doctor. I'm sling-free! He was very impressed with my self-physiotherapy and although I have a little more work to do to get my arm as straight as it could be, it's definitely in good shape considering I only fractured my More About: Kaleidoscope
Grade 4 Standardized Religion Test
2008-04-08 12:10:00 Toronto's Catholic District School Board will be testing the faith of its Grade 4 students in a controversial new religious exam. The test asks students to fill in the missing words to the Lord's Prayer or explain why "Jesus is the light of the world," among other things. And of course, as with anything religious and/or standardized in the education system, there is already a big uproar. More More About: Religion , Test
Holy Dust Bin
2008-04-07 13:39:00 In the latest update from the parish of Angry Priest, I was informed that for some unknown reason, one of the city's green waste bins has been turned into something ... holy? Apparently it was up at the front of the church during the Easter Vigil with a blue cloth covering it, topped off with a silver cross. Now it has been moved to the back of the church and it is filled with holy water. My More About: Holy

Wacko Disrupting Mass?
2008-04-05 15:03:00 This morning I clicked on the video of what Fr. Z. has called an "anti-Catholic wacko" disrupting Mass . For a minute, I actually didn't recognize what the problem was -- it looked and sounded like a typical homily/rant from Angry Priest! More to come...
SOS
2008-04-05 14:59:00 Recently Happy Priest was talking about having to call SOS when you're in trouble. He said he gets SOS calls quite often, as that is what he calls the Sacrament of the Sick. Just call SOS when you're in trouble, and help will be on its way. I like that. Has anyone else heard it called this? More to come...
Intentions Request
2008-04-04 14:41:00 Today a friend of mine is being ordained to the priesthood with the Congregation of Saint Basil. Despite two written invitations and one verbal one, a failed attempt to get cheap Air Canada tickets and a cash flow problem have left me in Toronto instead of Houston, so I am with him in prayers and spirit today instead. Headhunters!
2008-04-03 14:36:00 I got a phone call yesterday morning from the private Catholic school where I interviewed a few weeks ago. Three days ago now, I declined a second interview they offered because of my newly accepted position. Apparently they wanted to ensure that I was sincere in that, because they had a young music teacher call me yesterday on the premise that she wanted to meet me, hadn't had a chance when I
Grade 3s Turn On Their Teacher
2008-04-02 14:48:00 Before I left my practicum placement, I asked the top kid in the class and the worst kid in the class to fill out evaluations of my teaching. They looked remarkably similar and were very favourable and encouraging. Somehow, I think that if this grade 3 teacher did the same thing, she would get evaluations back with death threats and perhaps written in blood. Nine of her students are facing More About: Teacher , Turn

Nitwits
2008-04-01 00:28:00 I went a total of three full weeks at my practicum site, a rambunctious all-boys school, without getting hit on my broken arm even once despite crowded hallways and the need to move between classrooms frequently. Boys saw my sling and moved out of the way, respecting my space and my pain. I get to the university this morning and within the first five minutes, my nitwit of a professor actually

We Do Our Mother Proud
2008-03-30 14:20:00 My brother and I were talking about Dog the Bounty Hunter after Easter dinner, and noting that every episode followed the same pattern: there's a dangerous, scary bad guy to catchLeland can't read the details very wellDog prays some theologically "interesting" prayers for safety and health and for the bad guy to go down like the scum he isDog's team chases the bad guy down, swearing and cursing More About: Mother , Proud
It's Official...
2008-03-29 21:41:00 Despite a broken arm and no discernible voice, I managed to impress a panel of interviewers and receive a second job offer this afternoon (though there was little doubt, since the pastor was very clearly interested). Much discernment is occurring. Decision coming Tuesday. Stay tuned. More to come... More About: Official
Interview Again
2008-03-29 12:42:00 So I have the final part of an interview today in a town nearby my parents' home. The only problem: I have a raging case of laryngitis and where my voice should be, there is merely some sort of squeak coming out. I called the pastor last night and told him about my situation, and he called back to say that it was really important to do this now because he is leaving for the Holy Land on More About: Interview

Breaking the Law
2008-03-28 14:10:00 At my practicum placement yesterday, a frazzled VP asked if I could supervise a class on my own. It's illegal because the school is not insured without a certified teacher in the room, but I figured why not ... how bad could it be for a shortened 30 minute period with another teacher popping his head in periodically. When I entered the room, I told the boys I had two rules:(1) Everybody has to More About: Breaking

Unexpected Classroom Moments
2008-03-27 10:56:00 I had a male student burst into tears during one of my classes this week. Fortunately, it was nothing I said. Yesterday afternoon, while my teacher ran off to the bathroom between classes, another teacher providing coverage walked into our class, told the boys to open their books and asked me where their assignment was. I was extremely puzzled -- my teacher just went to the bathroom. Did he More About: Moments
Forgotten Tidbits From The Vigil
2008-03-26 11:03:00 One of my favourite aspects of the Easter Vigil involved the fire. Much to my horror, Happy Priest actually lit the Holy Hitachi (my name for it) in the church, just below the choir loft. This had the effect of sending up sparks and massive amounts of smoke into the choir loft. In the darkened church, the congregation could just barely make out the image of the choristers frantically fanning the More About: Tidbits , Forgotten

Easter Vigil
2008-03-24 13:57:00 Our Easter Vigil was considerably less offensive since the Alleluias were supposed to be there and the presider, Happy Priest, was very excited about it being Easter. He called out to us like a Baptist preacher: "Are you all doing all right tonight? I can't HEAR you!" until a few of the retirees in the front started to nod their heads. He had us yell out "Alleluia" and "Amen" a few times too -

Question for the History Buffs: Good Friday Prayers
2008-03-22 13:29:00 As I was listening to the intercessions on Good Friday , I couldn't help but wonder about the second one. If the Pope has died and there is no elected Pope on a particular Good Friday, is this prayer eliminated? And for any of you history buffs, has the Church ever been without a Pope on Good Friday in the past? If so, when? More to come... More About: History , Question , Prayers
Time To Shoot The Liturgist!
2008-03-21 21:44:00 Good Friday Mass at my parents' parish was interesting as usual. Unfortunately, there was no sign of Angry Priest. Instead, our Deacon, who has been very ill lately and didn't look too well today, led a very nice service considering. Still, we had a few liturgical hiccups. Perhaps liturgical belches would be a more appropriate term. The congregation was asked to read the part marked "S2" for More About: Time , Shoot
