Anthropic global warming theory = junk science
2010-03-04 09:08:00
An unfalsifiable theory is, by definition, junk science. Anthropic global warming is unfalsifiable, as can be seen with the recent rise to prevalence of the term “climate change” in place of global warming. Sure, the global temperatures have not risen for the past 15 years, but if you say “climate change,” you can have it ...

Require basic test to vote
2010-03-03 09:23:00
I wonder whether it might be better if there was a basic test required before people were allowed to vote. If a basic knowledge of civics and economics was required before people could vote, I don’t think we’d be in the state we are in today. It’s probably unconstitutional, but perhaps we could make an ...

Pop-up notifications for new mail on the iPhone
2010-01-30 15:20:00
Okay, I promise this will be the last iPhone post for at least a little while. After successfully getting push e-mail working on my iPhone, I got greedy and wanted to have a pop-up notification and sound alert when I got a new message. So here’s what I did: 1) Grabbed a copy of IMAProwl from here ...

I don’t know how many of you out there have your own webserver and an iPhone, but I just found the thing I’ve been looking for ever since I got my iPhone: push e-mail! I have a webserver running cPanel, Dovecot and suPHP. Here’s what I did: 1) Download z-push from here. 2) Upload z-push to /usr/local/apache/htdocs 3) Change ...

I guess this will be my last post this year. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas !
Ridiculous Scrooges
2009-11-30 04:51:00
It happens every year: All over the United States, scrooges take schools and other public institutions to court to challenge Christmas celebrations. Stores remove Christmas displays in favor of more generic displays of “season’s greetings.” Public spaces are cleared of manger scenes. The list goes on and on. It’s already started this year. Anyone who ...

Japanese bowing etiquette
2009-11-17 06:35:00
President Obama’s recent trip to Japan caused a stir when he greeted the Emperor with a 90-degree bow. The President’s supporters are claiming that it was protocol, but it most certainly was not. Bowing between equals involves a 45-degree bow. Never does a party on equal terms with the other perform a 90-degree bow (unless ...

All is well

In case anyone is wondering, nothing is wrong. If you didn’t already know, I am a professional translator. Lately I just don’t have the energy to blog after translating/writing all day. I’ll be taking a break from blogging for a while (although I might post something from time to time). Maybe a few weeks, maybe ...

The [Expanded] Bible
2009-09-05 08:31:00
Hope you’ll bear with me for another review. I recently got a copy of The [Expanded] Bible , a hardback study Bible, through the Thomas Nelson?s Book Review Blogger program. The tagline for the product is “Study the Bible While You Read, ” but I don’t think you can really do that with this Bible. The notes ...

Orwellian politics
2009-07-24 05:50:00
Dick Morris has a good article on his blog today called “Rhetoric v. Reality: Health Care by Orwell“. President Obama?s rhetoric last night summoned the memory of ?1984,? George Orwell?s novel of a nightmarish future ? where the slogan of the rulers is ?War is peace; freedom is slavery; ignorance is strength.? The president assures us that ...

Just when you thought it couldn?t get any worse
2009-07-15 05:51:00
The Obama presidency has so far been a disaster for future prosperity. The national debt has, what doubled? Our president is calling the shots at auto companies, and he is well on the way to establishing a socialized health care system and putting the final nail in the coffin of capitalism. Americans are now funding ...

Canadian healthcare
2009-07-14 16:19:00
If you have about 20 minutes to spare, this is an excellent video. Michael Moore sings the praises of the Canadian healthcare system, but here’s a guy who actually went to Canada and went along with some Canadian friends to try to get treated by a doctor. The waits we hear about are not exaggerated. ...

The evolution of God
2009-07-02 07:20:00
Amazon recommended a book called The Evolution of God to me because I “have ordered Christian books in the past” or something like that. According to one of the reviews, the author argues that the God of the Bible starts out as a vindictive tribal god and evolves into an almighty God by the time ...
Japan trading freedom for safety and getting neither?
2008-06-09 12:34:00
I usually agree with Joseph Farah, but I think he needs to take a deep breath and honestly assess the gun control situation in Japan . Here’s an excerpt: A 25-year-old Tokyo man, describing himself as “tired of living,” yesterday killed seven and injured 12 more people…Japan has among the very strictest gun control laws in the ...

Are we causing Mars and Jupiter to warm, too?
2008-05-24 03:13:00
If there are no Martians or Jupiter ians, then the global warming occuring on those planets must be our fault, right? Well, at least we know President Bush has something to do with it.

Does your computer randomly crash and restart?
2008-05-22 13:36:00
My computer (about three years old, I guess) was randomly crashing and restarting recently, so I searched around on the Internet for the symptoms and discovered that dust could be the culprit. I contacted the manufacturer’s support center and got instructions for removing the outer case, and sure enough, there was a lot of dust, ...

Shroud of Turin back in the news
2008-05-21 16:37:00
The Shroud of Turin is back in the news. John Jackson, a physics lecturer at the University of Colorado contends that the results of the carbon dating tests done back in the 80’s are suspect because of possible contamination. You can count me among the skeptics, but I am still fascinated by the shroud nonetheless. I ...

What if SETI found ET?
2008-05-14 15:26:00
The question was posed at Uncommon Descent in response to a survey. Personally, I am absolutely convinced that there are no sentient extraterrestrials out there (I’m undecided as to whether or not I think there might be unintelligent life on other planets). I agree with one of the commenters at UD who said, The problem is that ...

When I first upgraded to Wordpress 2.5 I was having problems with the flash uploader. Casey?s Critical Thinking has moved!
2008-05-02 05:33:00
Well, I’m now at a new domain. It’s been a long time coming. For the longest time I have wanted to register cct.com, cct.net, cct.info or something like that, but those domains are reserved for at least the next decade or so. I thought about caseyscriticalthinking.com, but that’s too long. So then it occurred to ...

The precious accident
2008-04-12 08:46:00
I was watching a show called “Alien Planet” on the Discovery channel today, and some scientist (I presume an atheist) said, “We have to realize that life is the result of a series of random accidents. Life is precious, so we must do whatever we can to protect it.” He then went into a shpiel about how we have to protect the environment. I’m left wondering, however, why? Why, if it is merely an accident, do we have to protect life? The word “precious” presupposes that there is some sentient being that feels that affection or to which the thing described is considered valuable. To whom or what are we duty bound to protect life if there is no God? Ourselves? Well, what if some of us don’t see the need? It makes no sense to me.
